I remember when I first tried sizzling lunch I didn't think it was all that special. However, over time this chain has really started to grow on me. While I do still believe it's just a spot to get glorified fried rice or noodles, there's no denying that it's tasty. My favorite is their spicy garlic beef plate, which I douse in garlic shoyu, salt, pepper, and more spice. It's filling but the ratio of rice to meat is off (too little meat). Recently tried out their calamansi cane drink which was so refreshing. Also enjoy their cheese fries, chicken karage, and spicy crunch garlic wings (they aren't spicy at all though). I appreciate their consistency and until I learn how to make my own tepanyaki, I'll keep returning to sizzling lunch. Never encountered bad service here. It was my first time here, and my friend & I went here for dinner on a Saturday and there was no waitlist. We were greeted and seated right away. You order through the iPad (don't forget to order water), and we both got the Garlic Pepper rice and it was yummy! They have extra condiments on the table if you wanted to add some more sauces or spices in. Service was great! This Sizzling Lunch location is right off the freeway in a semi-busy plaza. This is a pretty busy plaza, so parking may be hit or miss, especially on weeknights and weekends. Hot off the sizzling plate! Personal-portioned rice or noodle dishes grilled on a sizzling plate with your choice of protein (salmon or beef) and topped with the sauces of your choice. We came in on a weekend dinner service (despite the name, they do serve dinner!) and it was not too busy and was pretty quiet. It seems the mall they share the parking lot with is primarily occupied by patrons of the high end sushi place next door. There were plenty of spots to choose from and the spaces were wide enough for larger vehicles. We did notice that there was a sign up process for securing the next table should the place get packed. Fortunately we were seated right when we entered. At each table, you'll find a container of sanitizing wipes, utensils stored in paper wraps, a carafe of water, sauces for your dish (garlic shoyu, spicy miso, and teriyaki) and an IPad for placing your orders. It was pretty straightforward to order as there are pictures and customizations to help make your decision. Each dish can be loaded up with add-ons for additional cost but the meal in itself was plenty for one person. If you're a first timer or just have questions, their staff float around and can assist. They're super friendly and quick to support. Melissa was our server and helped make our dining experience a great one. I ordered the onion beef pepper rice and it had the perfect amount of protein to rice ratio. The garlic butter coated the meat well and the bits of corn gave a nice juicy, crunchy surprise with each bite. I added a good helping of the spicy miso sauce to the dish and it gave a nice kick to my tastebuds. It wasn't too spicy so don't fret if you can't handle spice! Part of the fun, of course, is cooking your meal! With a hot sizzling plate, you'll have to be careful but with the paper ring installed around your plate when served, it's a good reminder to keep your hands and arms away from the hot surface. This was especially helpful for the kids who had a blast stirring in their mix-ins and sauces. It does get a bit steamy but the paper ring does absorb some of that so it isn't flying in your face. The first time we came here on a weekday the place was pretty empty. We used the QR code system to order per the wait staff's direction and somehow we ended up accidentally ordering an extra meal even though we did not intend to. We were told to pay and take the meal anyway. Needless to say it wasn't the most pleasant experience and the wait staff weren't doing much so it was extra frustrating knowing that they could have just taken our order but made us use the automated ordering system which was glitchy. If I were to compare this place to Pepper Lunch in Milpitas, it is more expensive for less food. Pepper lunch also gives you a soup that has some noodles in it which is a nice touch. We live closer to Sizzling Lunch though so they have our business from a convenience factor and the food is pretty solid. The second time we came was during their Mother's Day promo and it was extremely busy. We actually tried to come for lunch and saw how ridiculous the line was and ended up coming back for dinner. They are either understaffed or just not very efficient. There are tables available but between the waiters running around trying to fill orders or take care of specific customer requests and the one waiter who is the host and taking calls it seems like only the host seats people so if he's swamped taking calls then no one gets seated. It seems like if the other waiters could also seat individuals the process would go a lot smoother. Not to mention they have no time to clean the tables in between so the floor and surfaces are quite dirty. As for the food, I don't eat much but the portion still feels small for the price. I'll eat my entire entree and still be hungry when I leave. I came for dinner on a Saturday at around 5 PM and it wasn't busy at all! They had music playing and it was an overall quiet environment because there was only a few other tables filled. We were seated immediately and had to scan a QR code for ordering our food. I ordered a Beef Pepper rice, the Cucumber salad/kimchi, and the Chicken Karaage (I promise, these were split with a friend). Beef Pepper Rice: 7/10. The taste was pretty good! I had a small issue with the beef and the rice getting stuck to the pan and burning a little. It was nice to have a little crispy rice at the end of my meal, but the burnt parts of the meat weren't too pleasant. I recommend mixing it as soon as you get it so you can get the meat directly off the heat asap. I added a bit of all the sauces to add some flavor, but it was overall a very basic flavor and enjoyable! The portion isn't as large as I thought it was, so the price is a little questionable. Cucumber Salad: 8/10. My friend and I both agreed the cucumber salads are better when they're not too salty and more basic tasting. The cucumbers were very refreshing and, if anything, a little less salty than preferred. But it was a stark contrast to the hot food, so I would definitely order again! Chicken Karaage: 8/10. I loved the portion of the chicken! It comes with a mayo-based (?) sauce and the chicken came out piping hot. It had a nice flavor and kinda reminded me of popcorn chicken (in a good way). We had no idea what to expect here but I'm glad we came. It's Japanese (with maybe a bit of Korean influence). Meals are served with the meat still raw in a sizzling hot plate (like Korean dol pan) and you cook your meat to the desired doneness as it sits on your plate, turning the meat half way through. The cooking plate becomes your dinner plate, like sizzling fajitas in a Mexican restaurant. Once your meat is ready, just move it from direct contact so that it rests on top of your rice, veggies or udon noodles, then top it with one of the sauces on the table, like spicy miso or teriyaki. They also had gyoza and takoyaki. Takoyaki is an amazing Japanese street food that I highly recommend as an appetizer. The service is designed to be less laborsome for the restaurant. We ordered via an app. They brought carafes of water to the table so we could fill our own glasses. We checked out at the front counter. It's not like they don't check on you or refill your carafe. But it's a low touch service by design. The restaurant is clean and bright, but not fancy or highly decorated. I came here with a group of friends during lunch and since the spacing was small inside we had to wait about 20 minutes for another big group that was dining inside to finish before we got seated. They didn't have a designated waiting space so we waited right in front where they would come out and call parties when their table were ready. Parking can get packed but if you're willing to walk a little further from the building there is parking. We had 2 kiosks mounted on our tables at both ends and we ordered through there. In addition to the pork katsu I ordered an appetizer of chicken kaarage and a drink of watermelon sugar cane, which was refreshing as it was cold and not too sweet. The chicken karaage had a nice light, crispy breading with moist meat. How was the pork katsu? I'm not a fan of curry, but I like Japanese curry as it isn't too spicy. What I like about Sizzling Lunch is the items are served on a sizzling cast iron plate. By mixing the curry into the rice on the sizzling plate you get a combination of sauce absorbing the crispy rice. This isn't the normal curry over rice dish. The pork katsu has a crunchy breading with moist meat. To often whether I've had chicken or pork katsu the meat is too dry. I've missed having the tonkatsu at the Big Island last week, but the pork katsu at Sizzling Lunch was a suitable replacement. read more

I don't get the hype about this place. To be honest there are so many better places in the Bay Area to eat Asian food than Sizzling Lunch. Curry Beef Rice - My biggest issue about Sizzling Lunch is that it is extremely unbalanced. Everything in this dish was very fatty and oily, so I would have appreciated something like kimchi to cut the fat. Overall, I would opt for other places to eat a more balanced meal. read more
