The food was great, and our waiter was very attentive. He checked on us throughout the meal and came back to see if we wanted to order more, which I really appreciated. My only issue was with the waitlist. I joined the waitlist and received a text saying our table was ready. After checking in with the host, we were told it would be "a few more minutes," but we ended up waiting about 20 minutes. If the table isn't actually ready, customers shouldn't be notified that it's ready. I hope they can improve the waitlist/check-in process. read more

I've been coming here for years, tonight we should have paid attention to all the red flags. Being a Thursday night at 5:30pm and the place was near empty, and nobody at the front for a good 10-15 mins something was definitely up. We were seated by the manager and was told our server would be with us shortly, I believe his name is Christian. Getting anything was a nightmare basic drinks took forever, we didn't get our sides till almost the end of the meal, and the topper we ordered the mixed vegetables, the red bell pepper had a nice patch of fuzzy gray mold on it. We called the server over and handed him the plate I told him please don't bring us any more bell pepper, he walked to his manager who just took a quick look. After that was a good 20 mins before we saw our server again with an empty grill the whole time waiting. The manager after the moldy bell pepper and poor service did nothing to remedy the situation, basically made us feel overlooked. I hands down believe this is the best location with the best staff. I've been to many different Korean BBQ places, and while each one has its own specialty meats, the employees at this Fremont location bring everything together and make it one of the best places to enjoy Korean BBQ. A huge shout-out to our server, Khaled (or at least I hope that's how he spells his name... LOL). He definitely got us with the soju deal, and honestly, I'm not even mad about it. Yes, please! Even though it was pretty busy, Khaled made sure our table was always taken care of. He was quick, attentive, and always seemed to know exactly when we were ready for another round of meat. The moment he saw we were down to our last plate, he would stop by and ask if we wanted to order more. He was very engaging, always had a smile on his face, and genuinely looked like he was having fun at his job. We've had a server here before, who will remain nameless, did the bare minimum, so Khaled's level of customer service really stood out. Keep up the amazing work! As for the food, our go-to meats are the honey soy beef belly, sweet garlic beef belly, red wine pork belly, Hawaiian bacon, sweet garlic pork belly, pork cheek, and Hawaiian steak. I've eaten at a different Gen location before so I knew of what to expect, plus my wife and I are pretty experienced in Korean BBQ AYCE places. My wife and I went on a Tuesday night. When we went there, a little before 5pm, there was a lot of open seating and we were seated right away. We chose the standard dinner AYCE menu, we didn't opt for the premium menu because after looking at the menu we felt we'd be happy with the regular dinner menu, and the premium menu (with Wagyu and other premium meats) is an extra $20 per person. We were there right at the tail end of happy hour so we ordered a carafe of Pina Colada, so it was a couple bucks cheaper than it usually is. The Pina Colada is made with soju and was pretty tasty. You can order 4 meats and 2 appetizers at a time which you have to put in with a server with a tablet. Our server took our first order and that came around pretty quick. I'm giving a lower number of stars because of what happened after the first round. More people came into the restaurant, including a big 25+ tour group. It seemed like there was one server for most of the dining room if not the whole dining room. It's not like they didn't have staff, there were the people bring out the meat and appetizers, and the people who clear empty dishes, but it seems like taking orders, replacing the grills, and bringing the check is the responsibility of the server, and from what we could see our server seemed to be doing it all on his own for most of the dining room, including that big tour group we mentioned. I'm raising this as a concern because it seemed to take 15 close minutes to even get a glass of water, close to 10 minutes to get grills changed when we had meat sitting on the table, and it took a little longer to put in additional orders because our server had to make the rounds. All that extra time contributed to our stomachs settling and at risk of not finishing all our plates and getting charged a penalty. We ended up pushing ourselves to finish strong and not get charged extra, I think if some of the lagtime didn't happen we would've done it more comfortably. In my experience, customer service at Korean BBQ AYCE places generally isn't great, but I'm guessing for a Tuesday night they were probably understaffed compared to what they'd do for Friday-Sunday, I'm hoping that's not how their staffing is on a weekend. The meat was really good (recommend the LA Galbi, the hawaiian steak, the hawaiian bacon, spicy pork, and marinated beef belly). For appetizers we enjoyed the corn cheese, bulgogi fries, and kimchee cheese fried rice. We paid using gift cards we purchased at Costco, the $100 value for $80, we purchased them a while ago so not sure if Costcos still stock them. In summary, quality of the food and meat was good, service could've been better, doesn't mean we wouldn't try this Gen again, but maybe wouldn't go on a Tuesday night. read more

I honestly been avoiding going here. Not because it is bad but just because I know the wait times will always be long. Well here we are. I went here with some friends for a birthday, we waited around 40 to an hour. What was nice is you can sit at the bar area while you wait other than standing outside so it didn't feel as long as I imagined. Because I was most likely tipsy. Once seated, my friends talked like they were some Korean BBQ veterans. They had a game plan that we all had to agree and stick to so we can get the maximum amount of meat we can for our money. After 2 years, I decided to come back here. I've been to the SJ location before and it wasn't great. I came here to Fremont and the meat is literally freezer burned, and almost inedible. I tried to eat it but I almost threw up. I didn't even last one round before wanting to give up. Servers still don't pay attention to you, and they now push random stuff like soju instead of just improving their meat quality. They even gave us this clapped grill with char on it and all banged up. I would genuinely, never in my life again, go to a Gen. I would literally end a relationship if someone wanted to go to this location. The vibe is definitely lively and a little on the louder side, especially during peak dinner hours, but that's kind of expected with AYCE KBBQ spots. We had many of the choices of meats. The Hawaiian bacon was really good. Short ribs and spicy chicken we also really liked. The shredded brisket was not worth all the hype I heard about. Appetizers we had potstickers and they rocked, also the fried calamari. The calamari has really good flavor and the dipping sauce went great with it, only issue it came out room temp. This location most certainly went downhill and it does not seem to stop. Tables are super sticky. Grill plates do not stay in place. Forcing big parties to sit in booths. I am sorry but let's use some common sense here. Menu has changed, it's not terrible but they have removed something's to include some mexican inspired meats for tacos. It is a nice touch for sure. Service is fine but you can tell that they are short staffed and the kitchen is always super slow so order anytime you have a chance. Went here on a friday night at 6pm and it wasn't too busy yet because they seated us right away. We had Justin as our server and he was very friendly and reliable with our orders. They served the food pretty quick but the drinks took a while because it was only him who was delivering the drinks and it wasnt only us who he was helping out. The ambiance is the same as usual great vibe and the place was clean including the restroom. The last time we were here was 4 years ago and its still almost the same, the only thing that changed was their menu which they have a premium now that adds $20/person. To the Restaurant Owner, I normally do not write negative reviews, but after my most recent experience at your restaurant, I feel that the owner should know what is happening. I visited this location with my family on Saturday, August 9, 2026, around noon. This was my third time visiting this location. I remember coming here about two years ago, and the experience was completely different. The service was good, and the restaurant was extremely busy on Saturdays. This time, I was shocked to see how empty the restaurant was. There was no wait at all, and only a few tables had customers. It actually seemed like there were more employees than customers. Unfortunately, after experiencing the service, I started to understand why the restaurant may not be as busy as it used to be. Your waiter provided extremely poor service. He rarely came to our table to check on us or see if we needed anything. When he brought our food, he seemed unhappy and simply dropped the dishes on the table without any friendliness or attention. His attitude made us feel uncomfortable and unwelcome. The service was so disappointing that even though I was still hungry, I did not want to order any additional food because I did not want to deal with the waiter anymore and see his face. The worst part was when we were ready to pay. It took approximately 30 minutes just to get our bill and pay. I became so frustrated that I kept walking back and forth toward the cashier trying to find someone who could help us. I was very upset and disappointed throughout this visit, especially because I was there with my family and expected to have an enjoyable meal together. For the first time that I can remember, I left a restaurant without leaving a tip. I normally believe in tipping restaurant staff, and I do not feel comfortable leaving no tip. However, in this situation, I truly felt that the level of service did not deserve one. I am writing this review because I hope the owner will take it seriously. The problem did not appear to be just one waiter; the overall service and management seemed very poor. Based on my previous visits, I know this restaurant used to provide much better service and used to be much busier. I sincerely hope the owner looks into what happened on August 9 around noon and speaks with the employees and manager who were working at that time. If this level of service continues, I am concerned that more customers will stop coming back. I would rather see the restaurant improve and return to the level of service it provided in the past. Gen BBQ has been one of my favorite affordable all you can eat Korean BBQ spots for over ten years. I have been to every location in the Bay Area and the Fremont one is definitely one of the better experiences. I have been here a few times and the service has always been solid. It can be a little slow at times, but it is nothing compared to the Concord location. Service really depends on which server you get, but overall Fremont has been consistently good. I live in San Leandro so I usually choose between Fremont and Concord. Concord is easier to drive to because there is less traffic on the way, but once you are there the service moves so slowly that it cancels out the convenience. Fremont always has traffic, but once you sit down things move much faster and the overall experience is better. That is why Fremont is still the one I prefer. My go to dishes are the honey soy beef belly and the red wine pork belly. They are always flavorful and cook perfectly on the grill. Ohgane in Concord is still my favorite Korean AYCE, but I go there on weekends since they don't offer lunch pricing. read more

Visited this location on 9/13 around 12 PM with my family. While waiting to be seated, my son accidentally dropped a hot chocolate that we did not purchase here . We immediately notified the manager who happened to be passing by and offered multiple times to clean it up ourselves, even asking for paper towels or a mop. His response was dismissive and unprofessional saying something along the lines of, "It is what it is. I have to clean it." Accidents happen, but we were disappointed by the manager's response and attitude, especially after we offered to take care of the mess ourselves. Service was good and the environment is very stimulating with their larger than life TV screen on the wall, music playing and birthday celebrations all around with loud pots and pans banging all around us but definitely a place to go to if you want to have a fun time. We have been coming to Gen Korean BBQ for nearly 50 visits over the years. We have brought many friends, family members, and guests because this has always been one of our daughter's favorite restaurants. Unfortunately, we have experienced rude and disrespectful service on multiple occasions. We chose to overlook those incidents every time because we enjoyed the restaurant and wanted to keep coming back. However, what happened tonight was completely unacceptable. After waiting patiently for over an hour with our guests and two young children, we were finally seated. To our disappointment, several of our favorite menu items, including Kimchi Fried Rice and the brisket sauce, were unavailable. We decided to continue with our meal anyway and ordered our meat. The food never cooked properly because our grill was clearly malfunctioning and would not heat up beyond a very low temperature. Our server told us they would speak with the manager and that we could possibly move to another table. When we followed up later, we were simply told that there was nothing they could do. When we asked to speak with the manager, a young employee from the kitchen came over instead. Rather than trying to resolve the issue, he asked our ages and then became extremely aggressive and disrespectful. It was one of the most shocking customer service experiences we have ever had. When we explained that we expected at least a sincere apology for the situation, they refused to apologize and refused to provide any meaningful customer service. As a result, we had no choice but to leave the restaurant hungry at around 9:00 PM with two young children after spending over an hour waiting. We sincerely believe the way we were treated was discriminatory and completely unacceptable. We cannot remain silent after being treated this way. We will be pursuing all appropriate avenues to report this incident and protect our rights as customers. This experience has permanently changed our opinion of this restaurant, and we hope no other family has to go through what we experienced tonight. read more

I came to this Gen location maybe 2 or 3 years ago since it was the closest one to me. However, I visited for the first time in a while and it has seemed to go downhill. I went with some friends during lunch and it was dead. Maybe 5 other tables in the whole restaurant, when I was preparing for a wait. Even so, nobody greeted us or rushed to seat us. I also understand this is a kbbq place but it was so dirty! I felt oil as I slid into the booth, I nearly slipped on the floor walking to the restroom, we had to request a grill replacement before we even started eating, and needed new small plates. The food is still good, they have a good selection of meats on the standard menu, great sides, and it seems like they added a lot of new sauces. The brisket wasn't the bright red color I'm used to but it still tasted good. Our server was really cool but I'm not even sure he wanted to be there. The wait for certain foods was kind of long and we didn't get our water until after the meat arrived so we were thirsty. There were also some items that were sadly out that we were looking for to. Finally went to a Korean barbecue place. The experience was fun and I did enjoy the food. The biggest thing that stood out to me from this experience was that our waitress was very attentive and kind. The food was just ok. I wasn't impressed. Nothing memorable to me. I've been to way better places with better meat cuts. If the price wasn't as expensive as it is, my opinion would be different. But for $69 ( premium with a drink + tax & tip ) a person it's just way too expensive. If you have a small stomach like myself this just isn't going to make sense. I probably ate $20 or less worth of meat, and then I was full. With that said, if you have a big stomach and have the ability to consume large mounts of food, it might be worth coming in for a visit. In regard to ambiance the place is well decorated but I just feel it's a bit dirty. It's just doesn't feel as clean as it should. I give them a bit of slack, after all they are having people cook their own food. So the job to keep this place clean must be tremendous. We never had to wait for anything--he was always attentive to our table and seemed to anticipate what we needed before we even had to ask. The biggest surprise was finding out that he's actually a bartender. You never would have guessed because he handled serving our table like a seasoned pro. His professionalism, friendly attitude, and attention to detail made our dining experience outstanding. Give that guy a raise!
