I honestly been avoiding going here. Not because it is bad but just because I know the wait times will always be long. Well here we are. I went here with some friends for a birthday, we waited around 40 to an hour. What was nice is you can sit at the bar area while you wait other than standing outside so it didn't feel as long as I imagined. Because I was most likely tipsy. Once seated, my friends talked like they were some Korean BBQ veterans. They had a game plan that we all had to agree and stick to so we can get the maximum amount of meat we can for our money. Service is fine but you can tell that they are short staffed and the kitchen is always super slow so order anytime you have a chance. The vibe is definitely lively and a little on the louder side, especially during peak dinner hours, but that's kind of expected with AYCE KBBQ spots. Never done anything like this before, so I was excited. The place is really cool inside. Has a massive tv. There is a bar and bbq tables, also tables for the none bbq people. We had many of the choices of meats. The Hawaiian bacon was really good. Short ribs and spicy chicken we also really liked. The shredded brisket was not worth all the hype I heard about. Appetizers we had potstickers and they rocked, also the fried calamari. The calamari has really good flavor and the dipping sauce went great with it, only issue it came out room temp. This place is a whirlwind of fun. Food was amazing. Service was good and the environment is very stimulating with their larger than life TV screen on the wall, music playing and birthday celebrations all around with loud pots and pans banging all around us but definitely a place to go to if you want to have a fun time. When you get home, you will have to wash everything you wore and take a shower because the smell of all the delicious food that you just ate will be on your clothes and in your hair. No matter how busy this place gets, the servers are always on top of their tables. We consistently get great service, and we love that even when our regular servers aren't assigned to our section, they still stop by to say hi. At this point, we joke about how often we come here because they actually remember us--and honestly, I love that kind of attention. It's been the same servers taking care of us over time--Erik (who we haven't seen in a while), Sai, and Mondo--and they're the ones who really stand out. Our favorite bartender, Anthony, has also always been wonderful. The level of attention and memory they have for regulars makes a big difference. Our go-to meats are the brisket, honey soy beef belly, and spicy beef belly. We cook all three together, and the way the flavors meld is seriously so good. We'll usually order a couple plates of the red wine pork belly as well--that one is always a must for me. One time, Mondo even dropped off an extra plate without us asking because he already knew we'd order more pork belly anyway. We also love getting the Hawaiian steak and using the pineapple twice--grilling it over the brisket and then adding salt and their crazy sauce. Absolute flavor heaven. One time we told Sai to bring us his favorite meat. He asked if we had any restrictions, and we only said no chicken since it's sometimes hard to tell if it's fully cooked. He actually remembered that. My cousin loves the calamari steaks, and Sai brought those out along with his favorite dish. Gen BBQ has been one of my favorite affordable all you can eat Korean BBQ spots for over ten years. I have been to every location in the Bay Area and the Fremont one is definitely one of the better experiences. I have been here a few times and the service has always been solid. It can be a little slow at times, but it is nothing compared to the Concord location. Service really depends on which server you get, but overall Fremont has been consistently good. I live in San Leandro so I usually choose between Fremont and Concord. Concord is easier to drive to because there is less traffic on the way, but once you are there the service moves so slowly that it cancels out the convenience. Fremont always has traffic, but once you sit down things move much faster and the overall experience is better. That is why Fremont is still the one I prefer. My go to dishes are the honey soy beef belly and the red wine pork belly. They are always flavorful and cook perfectly on the grill. Ohgane in Concord is still my favorite Korean AYCE, but I go there on weekends since they don't offer lunch pricing. read more

The meats were flavorful, well seasoned, and cooked perfectly, and everything came out fresh and hot. The banchan and sides complemented the meal well, and the service was attentive without feeling rushed. One tip that is absolutely worth sharing is to check Costco before you go. They sell Gen Korean BBQ gift cards at a great value, usually around $80 for a $100 card, which is an easy 20 percent savings and makes the meal feel even better. The only small suggestion I have is for solo diners. If someone is eating by themselves, it would be helpful for servers to mention that half orders are available. I ordered four items and didn't realize they were all full portions until the end. I was completely stuffed and would have loved to try more variety if I had known smaller portions were an option. I came to this Gen location maybe 2 or 3 years ago since it was the closest one to me. However, I visited for the first time in a while and it has seemed to go downhill. I went with some friends during lunch and it was dead. Maybe 5 other tables in the whole restaurant, when I was preparing for a wait. Even so, nobody greeted us or rushed to seat us. I also understand this is a kbbq place but it was so dirty! I felt oil as I slid into the booth, I nearly slipped on the floor walking to the restroom, we had to request a grill replacement before we even started eating, and needed new small plates. The food is still good, they have a good selection of meats on the standard menu, great sides, and it seems like they added a lot of new sauces. The brisket wasn't the bright red color I'm used to but it still tasted good. Our server was really cool but I'm not even sure he wanted to be there. I would recommend driving the extra distance to a Gen in San Jose or Santa Clara. read more

Finally went to a Korean barbecue place. The experience was fun and I did enjoy the food. The biggest thing that stood out to me from this experience was that our waitress was very attentive and kind. The food was just ok. I wasn't impressed. Nothing memorable to me. I've been to way better places with better meat cuts. If the price wasn't as expensive as it is, my opinion would be different. But for $69 ( premium with a drink + tax & tip ) a person it's just way too expensive. If you have a small stomach like myself this just isn't going to make sense. I probably ate $20 or less worth of meat, and then I was full. With that said, if you have a big stomach and have the ability to consume large mounts of food, it might be worth coming in for a visit. In regard to ambiance the place is well decorated but I just feel it's a bit dirty. It's just doesn't feel as clean as it should. I give them a bit of slack, after all they are having people cook their own food. So the job to keep this place clean must be tremendous. Food * The usual expected quality for big KBBQ chains, nothing fancy but still good. We particularly liked the honey soy beef belly. Service * Sadly, we've been here a few times already and usually service is good although the wait time is long. This time in particular the service was really poor. We got there and they took 10 minutes to be seen by a server or any drinks put in. After we put in our orders, we got our meat orders but the drinks never arrived. We had to flag someone down and only got our drinks (waters and cokes) after putting in our second round in. For the rest of the night, we would get our orders taken but they wouldn't arrive. We had to flag someone down after each order we put in (we only ended up having like 4 rounds by the end of the night with 6 people). By the time the meat arrived the stove was burnt from nothing being cooked for so long and then we would have to wait for a stove replacement. Most of the group was upset since we were really hungry, and we don't expect exceptional service or anything just to get our orders in and delivered nothing else. I think the main problem was in the fact we were a group of 6 people and they said our group would only get 4 orders at a time. From past experiences, it's usually 4 orders to a grill. Maybe because they sat us at one grill that the rule was in place, but it would have saved them service time if they gave us even 5-6 orders at a time so that we don't finish the round in less than 10 minutes. I've worked as a server, so it's possible they are short staff and have to stretch to over many tables, but sadly won't be coming here again unless we have to since the location is convenient. :( Ambiance * Since it was dinner, the noise level was loud. He was literally throwing the food onto the table, took an unbelievably long time to bring our order, and even left the grill burning without changing it, didn't refill our water even once. What made things even worse was the manager's response. When I went to complain about the service, all I got was, "I apologize about that." He didn't even ask what had happened or seem interested in understanding the issue. It felt like they simply didn't care. It's such a shame because the food itself was absolutely amazing. The kitchen clearly knows what they're doing, but the terrible service completely ruined the experience.
