The chicken boat was yummy, freshly baked bread and flavorful toppings. What this place lacks is staff. It took about an hour to get my chicken boat and soda. There was nobody available to ask any questions to. There were only two people running the place, who had to cover taking orders, cooking, serving, cleaning, etc. The trash was overflowing. They tried hard to move faster, but it seems to be more of a management/owner issue. The clerk tried calling the owner to ask about using a restaurant.com certificate, but could not get an answer, so he used his daily meal allowance to satisfy the customer. You know, I don't come to pioneer square on the weekends against my will often but I would actually return again just to eat at Skalka. If you are a local in Seattle, you know how much this statement speaks volumes. Among the crazy homeless and chaotic streets of downtown, you'll find Skalka tucked away right off the boardwalk and in a cute white and yellow decorated restaurant space. It's self serve for the cashier so you can pay immediately without having to wait in a line, which is a huge plus for me! There are only 5 options but I promise you that they do their small menu well. I got the vegetarian option which was flavorful and full of spice. My friend suggested we try Skalka because she wanted to try khachapuri. I had never heard of it. Skalka's location was right on our way from the hotel to the pier, since we were going to ferry to Bainbridge right after. I did not know how much I needed Khachapuri in my life. In my mouth. IN MY BELLY. I had the veggie. It reminded me of shaksuka. The bread container was crunchy on the outside and so soft on the inside. Half was the heavenly egg and cheese mixture topped with an egg yolk and a thick pat of butter. The other half was the tomato/veggie/stew that was a like a hug for my tummy. THIS IS COMFORT FOOD. We sat outside of the building, which was perfect. It was delicious. I almost ate the entire thing. A bread boat filled with an egg, cheese, and butter with the option to also add meat and veggies - we tried the chicken and the veggie (eggplant and tomato). The bread is chewy with a pretty open crumb - break off pieces and dip it in your runny egg and filling. The eggs are barely set, the fillings are finely chopped to allow dipping and mixing. I cannot recommend this enough. The ordering is done digitally at a station at the counter. Staff will call your order number when things are ready for you at the back counter. Paper plates, plasticware - this is not fancy. We arrived 15 minutes before opening and were second in line on a Saturday morning. Seating is limited, so once the doors were open, half of our group ordered for everyone while the others snagged a table. This is filling (we skipped lunch that day) and warms your soul. Stopped by on a rainy Sunday afternoon hoping for a quick, warm snack before continuing on our explorations for the day. Ordered the chicken boat but it took over 45 minutes to receive our order. There was a couple next to us who waited about an hour to order as well. Turns out they had some issues in the kitchen that caused the delay but they didn't inform customers and continued to take & service takeaway orders, which caused additional delays. So the service and timeliness wasn't great. Now for the food - the chicken boat was delicious, the bread incredible and the perfect 'boat' for the cheese, egg and chicken. The flavors worked well together and it was a comforting meal on a cold, rainy day. You can always ask for it without the egg if you'd like. I added some hot sauce for an extra kick! Heard rave reviews for this place before going, and found them all to be true. We came on a rainy day, right as it opened, and managed to get a table. By the time our order came out (~15 minutes later), the place was full. The bread boat was piping hot and delicious. The outside of the bread was fairly crusty, and the inside was really soft, and only the slightest bit soggy. The portion is very generous, I wouldn't have been able to finish it by myself. Be aware, the bread boats are deceptive, and are a lot more filling than you might expect on first visit. We've tried the lobiani (my personal favorite so far) and the chicken. The pickled veggies on the lobiani just pair so well with the simpler bean filling and the spices all round it out to make it all shine. Just be aware, if you get a bread boat with two sides, you're not meant to mix it. I mean, you can, and we did, but you're meant to have two different flavors to enjoy during your meal. It was one of those Seattle spring days where the temp warms up a whole 10 degrees. This was so perfect. Warming, tasty, full meal. Why 4 stars? It's very automated. There are often ZERO staff at the front. But they've prioritized making food and getting out so its a minor (possibly petty?) knock. Drink selection is limited - soda & coffee & water - I'm a bottled tea person. These are NOT REASONS you should avoid the place. If anything they are smart choices that highlight the point of this cheese and bread mecca. Just things I hope they add when they become even more successful. Khachapuri (Hatch-ah-POO-ree). Georgia's national dish (the country. Not the state where your cousin who tells everyone he is a music producer lives) is a stuffed- bread delight. I hadn't seen nor heard of it until I was leaving the Seattle ferry terminal and walked past Skalka Cafe Seattle. Skalka opened in 2019. According to their website, two immigrants from Georgia and Russia wanted to prove Eastern European food could taste delicious and look phenomenal. That it does! Khachapuri is eaten by hand, ripping off chunks of the crust and plunging them into the dip. The main part of the dip is the adjaruli- melty, fresh cheese, butter and a runny egg yolk. The adjaruli is your base and from there you can choose fillings like beef stroganoff, herbed chicken or a veggie option with eggplant and peppers. I had the chicken and beef stroganoff. Both are absolutely delicious, especially when you break the yolk and allow all the flavors to mix. The bread is soft inside and perfect for dipping into the mixture. Whether dining in or out, start your day in Seattle with this delicious treat that's true to its ethnic roots. read more

First time trying Skalka was so good! I tried both the stroganoff and the veggie khachapuris (bread boats). Absolutely loved the bread crust -- it was super fluffy and warm. Both the stroganoff and veggie filling was good, and I'd say the veggie was slightly better. I'd recommend using the crust to mix it with the cheese and filling together! Eat this right when you buy it so that the bread and filling is still warm. I'd warn that these bread boats are quite heavy -- especially with the amount of cheese and butter in them. While I did end up almost finishing my khachapuri, it was a ton of food, so I'd definitely share one with someone the next time I go. Give this place a shot for sure -- I'd recommend taking these khachapuris to enjoy at one of the piers on a sunny day for a great time and meal :) read more

I recently visited Seattle and Skalka bakery was one of my favorite places I tried there! It's a Georgian-Russian bakery that specializes in khachapuri (a bread boat where you stir the middle ingredients together and tear/dip the bread portion in the middle part). I had the chicken khachapuri and it was so flavorful and creamy. Each one is freshly made - there is some waiting time, especially if you come when it's busy but it's SO worth it! Apart from the amazing food, the service and ambience were also wonderful and you can tell that all the employees put in hard work to keep the bakery going.
