Skidders was recommended by hotel staff. I'm glad I went. It was very much a family owned place with a traditional Greek flare. I had the stuffed eggplant that was stuffed with ricotta cheese marinara sauce and baked. It was served with a very fresh house salad and I chose the house vinaigrette made with red wine vinegar and a side of spaghetti. The ambiance was very family oriented and I enjoyed watching the owner greet his regulars with hugs and a warm welcome. The pork was flavorful and juicy and nicely charred on the outside, served with perfectly grilled pita, tzatziki cucumber sauce, perfectly cooked crispy fries, a big thick square of feta cheese, a big platter of leafy greens, pepperoncini, bell peppers, onions and black olives. The meal started with yeasty fresh baked house made rolls. Kim had the Kendall Jackson Chardonnay. Kim loved her Crab stuffed sole, served with yummy red skinned new potatoes and steamed broccoli. I went with my boyfriend and we ordered stuffed mushrooms, Skidder's seafood combo, and seafood pasta. The stuffed mushrooms were good. The seafood combo and seafood pasta both came with the option for soup or salad and we both chose the clam chowder. The clam chowder was also good, not great like New England clam chowder I usually get in the northeast, but still pretty good. I loved the seafood pasta. I thought the sauce was great and everything was cooked really well. My boyfriend also enjoyed his seafood combo. It came with shrimp, scallops, salmon, and grouper. A sad transition for new management to a once excellent restaurant. Our party of 4 spent a very disappointing 2 1/2 hours on a Sunday evening at Skidders, once one of our favorite St Pete Beach restaurants. The first difference I observed was staff outnumbered patrons 2:1 when, in the past, folks were lined up out the door waiting for a table. The former gigantic menu has been pared down to a 2 sided shadow of what once was. Basic restaurant etiquette was ignored. I observed waitstaff constantly eating in the kitchen. Servers deserve to eat at a restaurant and that is, in fact, one of the best ways for them to know the food; but, not within sight of the guests. Italian/Greek fusion works only when creativity and honesty are the foundation in the kitchen. Our starters were calamari and potato skins. The plate of calamari had perhaps 4 identifiable pieces while the rest of the dish was just fried something or other. The potato on skins were anemic at best...only filled to perhaps 1/4 the sides of the potato rather than a heaping overflowing product. The veal dish was excellent. The asparagus was perfectly grilled. The crab stuffed flounder was awful. I was assured that the crab stuffing was real by my waiter before i ordered, but it was absolutely not real crab. Worse, the entire dish was covered in spaghetti sauce....a first for me in all my years. I actually felt sorry for the flounders who gave their lives and who ended up so disrespected. The same approach from the kitchen was rendered to the Moussaka. Any ya-ya would have been embarrassed. It seems little from the Greek side of the family originated from the kitchen, including the stuffed grape leaves that were clearly from out of a can. My usual experience at quality restaurants this side of MacDonalds is that the manager or at least the server would come table side and inquire as to the customer's satisfaction with the meal. Despite the restaurant being nearly empty, no one ever approached us. All these unnecessary deficiencies are correctable. Maybe there is hope for these folks in the future, but Skidders is no longer my go-to restaurant on the beach. Next time i am going to Snappers a block away. read more

Skidders is a first generation Greek family run restaurant with great service, high energy personality and excellent food. Often there will be a free round of drinks and broken plates but the Italian food is crazy good. Their spicy red sauce Fra Diavolo may be the best I have had. They put it on grouper or shrimp and scallops or in a muscle or clam zuppa. Many locals or long term visitors find this place and come every night. read more
