I grew up going to ski sundown, I did the Tuesday night ski school, now I'm in my 20's and live in North Carolina. I still appreciate this mountain. I just visited family and we decided to make a trip to ski sundown. The upgrade of the quad lift is great, keeps the lines moving fast. My brother and I rented ski/snowboard it took us about 30 minutes from start to finish to get on the slopes. They have lockers you can rent for a quarter or two. Helmets are not rentable, you must purchase one. They are not mandatory either it seems as I was able to wear a hat. The slopes were great, we got there 10 am, and rented a 4 hour pass. The food in the lodge is pricey but was expected. Overall a great experience and we will be back ! read more

(giving this place 5 stars--it's the only game in town---but I would like to see some improvements per below) I would love to see an easier way to get to the Sunnyside trails, rather than going on the moving carpet, which can have tremendous lines. I would also love to see cameras on the different trails (even just the black Ds) so you can see the conditions on an app. Such a small mountain, it's probably a doable action. Not every trail is as user friendly as every other trail, which is fine, we are in Connecticut, and conditions can be unpredictable, but it would be good to have a sense of the trail conditions before going to the trail. "Bunny slope" is super steep and was extremely icy when we went. They have multiple runs that come into the beginning area which makes it super dangerous when you have people flying by 20+ mph while some are just trying to learn to ride. The food area was horribly made as they kept hosting these "award shows" but all it did was block the entrance and exit so no one could get around no matter how many times I said excuse me. The staff don't seem to care as they ignore you anytime you try and ask something. I wouldn't recommend going if you are a beginner as powder ridge is so much better and cheaper than this place!! read more

Bought an 8-hour ticker 2/17 night for 2/18, drove all the way there, and the mountain was closed. No sign, no gate, nothing in the parking lot. There was no notice on Google map. Had to call to find out they weren't even open. If you're closed, don't sell tickets. Simple. （here is their reply of my request of refund. Exactly what you want for what you pay for. The lift lines moved in a good pace. Never waited in line for more than 5 minutes. The addition of the new quad is welcome and the guy blasting music at the bottom was keeping me grooving the whole time I was there. Parks have a great variety of terrain but the jumps could be molded better. The main jump line looks like something me and my friends could have formed ourselves. Overall the only downside is that this is a hive for Jerrys and ski school has a hard on for blocking features to let little kids obliterate the lips/obstacles. Even in spite of this it wasn't obtrusive. Had an absolute blast, they do a fantastic job managing terrain and the lodging is always clean and inviting. This was our first time skiing here and we had a great time. We came up from Atlanta and were taken here by relatives. There are a couple short easy runs to practice on and then you can go to the top of the mountain. Those runs get a lot more challenging and there is even a freestyle black diamond run if you are up for that. We took a lesson and the instructors were very friendly and helpful. We had some food and beers at the bar too. The beer was great and the food was just very basic bar/concession stand food. We had the nachos which were mostly stale chips and some chili on top. We also got the mild chicken wings which had zero heat to them. Even though the food wasn't good, the experience and fun we had was much more important. read more

A nice local ski resort! I'm a beginner skier and came here on a Sunday night. The paths are well lit so you are able to clearly see everything even at night. The staff was good but did not go above and beyond for a great experience. For anyone that is in the area and looking for a close area to ski, this is the place for you! read more

This was my go to for early season warmups. Sundown deserves an extra star. It is the most fun spot to do laps in CT.

I learned how to snowboard here. They have a nice learning mountain that the instructors teach on so it's very judgment free. I haven't gone on the other trails yet but I'm excited to try them out! We had to buy lift tickets online and they were sold out on the day we wanted to go, so we had to choose another day. They get pretty busy during the season so it was a little hard for me to navigate around all the people, but I'm sure it'll get easier once I get better. read more

On the one hand, a nice little ski resort close to Hartford, great for locals. On the other hand, this place needs improvement. This is my first ski experience since moving to the East Coast (from the west). I wasn't expecting Whistler. I get it. But this place is very different, not for the hill size (though that's definitely true), but for the culture. And the management could help fix it. Entitled teenagers seem to rule the place. First of all, no one seems to know how to use coat hooks, lockers, cubbyholes, etc. They just leave their stuff on and under the tables making it impossible to sit down if you decide to stop for a break. See pictures. Additionally, even when the lift lineups are long, skiers seem to think they should have an entire lift chair to themselves as single skiers. Case in point below. As we waited in a fairly long line (for a three person chair lift), I noticed two single skiers--one on my left, and one on my right. I decided to politely ask the person on my right if he was a single skier. He said yes. So I said, do you want to go ahead (of our group) and join the person on my left (just ahead of us)? He nodded and when ahead. Then they each stood in a single file line and did not join each other to pair up. Huh? So I said, are you two not going together? He turned around and said, No, I'm a single skier. I couldn't help myself. So I said, Are you unable to go on a lift with another person? He just ignored me (see pictures). The lifties or the ticket checker people need to direct people, putting single skiers together, or singles with doubles. The lineups are unnecessarily long as a result. When it's not busy, no big deal. But when your on a short ski pass and it's busy, it's frustrating read more

I started skiing when I was 3, with my Dad dragging me to the ski slopes or putting me in lesson. I skiied for most family trips growing up (mostly in Utah and Colorado) and by the end was even doing heli-skiing and some pretty extreme stuff. Cut to about 6 years later, I haven't skied in a long time and I'm home a lot of weekends in Connecticut, bored, and usually not getting any exercise. On a whim I decided to take the 30 minute drive up just to see if it was any good and to do something that I used to be incredibly talented at. When I got there is was so cute, a miniature version of a resort, with super friendly staff, quality rental brands, and super short lines (and I went on MLK weekend). I don't think I ever waited more than 5 minutes for a lift. The terrain is varied, and although like all eastern mountain, especially ones that use man made snowm it can get icy on some faces, but it also has a ton of windy cruises through the trees which are really wonderful to cruise through alone, bumping some Girl Talk. Most of my family are snow elitist, and won't get out of bed for less than a foot of fresh Utah powder, but I just love to ski and having found Sundown, I can do it again with almost no hassle or cost. I love that you can buy a 2, 4 or 8 hour ticket and the night skiing is wonderful. While on the chairlift with a Ski Patrol guy, he told me the owner made a huge capital investment in the snowmaking and they 'get' about two feet a night. As of this writing, Sundown has a deeper base than Snowbird and pretty much any other mountain in the area. If you live in CT or southern Mass, you can have a really good chunk of fun at Sundown. If you are into tricks, they have tons of rails and jumps everywhere that will keep you trying new tricks. Sundown has 85% of the vertical of the mountains way up north (like 3 more hours of driving), is relatively empty and is better than anything else in CT with consistent snowmaking every day. Rekindling my desire to do something I love is what Sundown has given me. It may not be Norway, or Austria or even Vancouver, but its all about the joy of skiing and making perfect turns, and it delivers. read more

5 stars for ski school: loved it so much more than Thunder or Butternut. Greg, the manager, is so hands on, quickly responds to anything, always there. Awesome. my 7 and 9 year old who had skied 3x before, went from novice to intermediate in 4 classes. They had fun and wanted to continue. Instructors look back, make sure they know each kids and I was given detailed recommendations for each child. Loved Sadie as an instructor. 3 stars for lodge: overcrowded and cafe food is pretty basic and pricey for what it is. Their hot chocolate is brown water essentially. Hope they'll do better next season as we will return for sure. read more

My husband and I came here as first timer and were not left disappointed. Such a cute place! The food is ok at most (comparable to 7/11), and the dining area gave me school cafeteria vibes. We got a private lesson and it was so worth it. The private lesson was about 50 ish dollars and it was an hour and a half. AMAZING! Our instructor was Camille, she was so nice , and helpful. Our family of 5 went skiing for the 1st time over the Christmas holiday. Nicky D was our most excellent instructor!! Felt very safe with their COVID policy. Nicky D taught all of us the basics with a fun filled 2 hour lesson- as a bonus, Nicky D even rubbed my wife's cold feet to help keep her toes warm. I was moderately terrified of coming here based on the Yelps alone. After my visit, it is clear that reports of rampant overcrowding have been greatly exaggerated. Yes, I went on a Saturday afternoon. No, there weren't that many kids. Yes, there were a fair amount of people there. On a Saturday... Shocker... The lifts are pretty fast for their age, and the seats are padded with foam, which makes a big difference at the end of the day. The most I waited for a lift was two minutes, and even that occurrence was rare. The snack bar is fairly good as far as snack bars go. It's not gonna blow your socks off, but they have a decent variety of cheap items to refuel you for the rest of the day. A bagel and cream cheese was $2.25, for instance. I will support the majority opinion that it is overpriced. $50 for a 4-hour lift pass at a mountain of this caliber is a joke. Unfortunately, the oligopoly of Connecticut ski areas allows the market to bear this price. But the fact that their full day pass ($56) is a dollar more than Butternut, which is three times the size, should tell you something. Next year, I think a season pass at Butternut ($300) is in order. read more

Pretty sad that this is considered the "premium ski area in CT". The boots (I snowboard) were of pretty poor quality even for rentals. Was really crowded, although it was a weekend. All of this is still acceptable but the trails. The trails were all either extremely icy or basically an entire field of messy moguls even though they weren't mogul areas. You could barely ever get a smooth ride in. The park is also just really small and there aren't many trails. It felt like I spent half the time just getting on and off the ski lift. Due to an especially heavy noreaster blowing through, I decided one last ski trip was in order. I was done with the Pennsylvania resorts so I decided to go north instead of west, but not too far north. I can't stand the 8 hour drive to Vermont, no matter how much time I have. If you are an expert skier this really wouldn't be your cup of tea as it is a pretty small ski resort. If you are however trying to learn how to ski this is a great spot to learn. Unlike most places they don't just have classes for beginners. They have classes for all skill levels right up to advanced. It doesn't have a huge selection of trails, so it's more like a ski school than a full on ski resort. The resort wasn't very crowded, and it seemed that the vast majority of the skiers were Connecticut natives (I could tell because they were super nice). I guess most New Yorkers don't tend to think of Connecticut as a ski destination. This is a huge plus for someone who is used to waiting on long lines at Shawnee or Camelback. So in conclusion, this is an awesome resort for those looking to improve their skills and those frustrated with long lines who don't mind a limited amount of trails. read more

Came here on not the best of nights. It has rained the day before and snow was too soft to be groomed. I got a quick lesson in mogul skiing. By 9pm it was so icy that stopping was almost impossible. My fiancé and I had a few days off from work and we decided to go to ski sundown since it was close to our current apartment. Overall the experience was great, staff were kind with rental equipment except one. This older lady in the ski shop upstairs was extremely rude and condescending towards me the entire time when I asked for help to buy a helmet. From the moment she came up to us at the helmet rack all the way to the register she would have an unnecessary side comment to every question I asked. It was to the point I was going to walk away but decided it was more important to just smile through it and be safe wearing a helmet. This one experience ruined a lot of the beginning of what was supposed to be a relaxing day off with beautiful weather. We will not be going back anytime soon, I deal with many nasty patients in the hospital and she is by far the rudest person I have ever met. read more

The resort itself is great, it's an amazing atmosphere. However, the reason for my two-star rating is for the kid at the repair station. I'm not sure what his name was but he worked at the repair station. He had the worst customer service I've ever encountered and made everyone uncomfortable because he did nothing but raise his voice at the customers ( which were kids who were doing nothing wrong, but he also raised his voice at older customers, which was upsettingly surprising). All in all, he made me and my family incredibly uncomfortable and I don't think I'll be taking my family back there unless this situation is addressed. read more

I'm certainly no skier, but as a newbie this place has a nice set of beginner hills with curves and turns that gets you ready for the real thing. There are several of them, so the skiing, while short, is still fun and interesting. There are two beginner lifts, and a handful of hills to take. Note: they only scan your lift ticket at the entrance to the practice area, not at the lifts, so you can ski even after your pass expires. This is nice if you're with kids or newbs like me so you can take your time learning. Also note: There are a lot of kids on the weekend, both skilled and otherwise. Be careful when going down the practice slopes, I almost took out a group of 7 year olds. read more

The last time I'll be going skiing here. Recent visit was 1/29/21 night skiing. It has been years since I was there, before marriage and kids. I wanted to bring my kids here for a change in scenery. Well, bad choice. First of all, half of the lights on the mountain were down being fixed as I was told. Both lifts and many of the trails were in the dark. Trails were closed because of it. They were making snow that night (not that it's a big deal) but the snow/water froze to our goggles and we could see anything. So the combination of both made is very unsafe for potential accidents. I had talked to the general manager that night with a complaint stating that this was the worst experience and how unsafe this was. He basically just apologized and said that there was nothing he could do. No refund. No hot chocolate... NOTHING. Last time I will ever go there. read more

For a place to go ski or board in CT, it's the best you'll find! Lots of variety, and when there isn't snow in the forecast. These guys make it happen! Going at noon on the weekend might be a little crowded FYI, but what place isn't. It is a smaller ski area, but it's a lot of fun. Night skiing is fun after only after 6pm due to the re grooming of every trail. The only reason I wouldn't give it 5 stars, is because of the lodge. VERY overpriced, smells like deep fried sweaty feet. The carpet needs to go. And they really need to re think the C- cafeteria food they sell. I spent $28 on lunch for my two boys. I get it, it's a short season, blah blah blah.. at least if the food was decent, I wouldn't care if I spent $35. They need to sell TACOS!! But this current food is bad. Bring lunch, pack a cooler! read more

This is a great place for intermediate as well as some advanced skiers looking to take it down a notch. Ski Sundown is fun, nicely groomed most of the time, nice people, and the trails won't beat you to death. Keep in mind, this is 5 star rated by myself considering all things such as east coast conditions (nowhere near mid-west skiing), price, accessibility, etc. Not a bad place for the price. About $55+ for lift tickets. They should get a special weekday price point but.... oh well. Would rather go there than Mount Snow or Catamount any day of the week or weekend. read more

Be careful when purchasing online, as they have terrible customer service. We purchased tickets the night prior to go skiing (having been burned with sellouts during COVID), one of our kids got a stomach bug overnight and we were not able to go the next day. We emailed immediately the next morning before the ski day started, and asked multiple times by phone and email to have the tickets honored a different day for my family to enjoy their facility. They refused to discuss it any further. We weren't asking for a refund, just the tickets we PURCHASED to be honored another day. Not only were they not willing to discuss it, but had a bad tone when discussing it, and said feel free to enjoy other CT mountains that have the same policy. We weren't asking for money back, the tickets were already paid for, we would have spent more money at their facility on food and drink, and they didn't seem to care. Terrible Customer service from management, from such a once great facility. I thought Ski Sundown would have had better Customer service and would have been more helpful and lenient on their policy as there is no cost to them, but unfortunately they have the same corporate feel as all the other big box mountains. We will be bringing our family and business elsewhere and I would recommend others do the same. read more

My daughter, niece, and I visited Ski Sundown this past weekend and had a blast!!! Since we were all first time skiers, we opted for equipment rentals, private lessons, and lift passes for the day. From the time we arrived till the time we left and around every corner, we were always met by Ski Sundown staff that were extremely friendly and willing to help in any way they could. I wish I could recognize every Ski Sundown crew member that we encountered because they all did a phenomenal job. Our instructors, Glen, Brandon, and Evan were remarkable! They were all skilled, extremely knowledgeable, and true professionals. Because of them, we were able to enjoy the day navigating the various trails that Ski Sundown has to offer. For beginners, we couldn't ask for more. I hope this feedback reaches them well, and they are all recognized for a job well done. We'll definitely be returning next season to sharpen our new found skills before we try and tackle the mountains up north in Vermont. read more

I have a lot of nostalgia for this place -- spent many childhood days/nights skiing here. Look, it's good for what it is - a decent place to ski in central Connecticut. The lodge + rental areas are often filled with kids and crowded--turning it into a zoo--but the slopes are decent, views are scenic and you can't beat the convenience in central CT. Lift lines can be a bit lengthy, which is annoying. Don't come in expecting Colorado skiing and you'll have a decent time. read more

I came here on 1/22/12 and was not a fan of Ski Sundown and here is why; 1. The mountain is kinda small. There was only 2 beginner trails :( 2. WAAAAY too many kids here. Think crazyness and loudness of a ball pit but then add skis/snowboards and a mountain. 3. The trails weren't well planned out. One of the trails you spend more time 'walking' then boarding. Also the trail (tom's treat) levels out so much that you need to keep speed or you will get stuck. Someone needs to get on that and fix it! 4. Can someone please explain to me why there are jumps and tricks on the beginner trail?? Not cool when you are trying to learn and someone flys by and lands right next to you. 5. So after not enjoying the trails so much I wanted to retreat from the slopes so I decided to get a bite to eat and relax. NOT POSSIBLE HERE! the cafeteria is a freakin' zoo! 6. I don't know for sure (b/c I'm no expert) but I felt like my equipment was either low quality, not properly selected for my weight/height or just faulty b/c it def felt 'off'. I had less control of my board which I couldn't figure out why. Also the boot on my lead foot wouldn't tighten up enough. I was able to fit 3 or 4 fingers in there :( I understand this might be a great place if you have kids b/c it's affordable and you can just let them loose but if you are a young adult just beginning to learn (like me!) this place might not be a good choice. read more
