Found out on a Friday morning that I had no water coming from the well at my home. I called around and came across Skillings & Sons. I was able to set up service same day. The guys were prompt and efficient in diagnosing my issues with my well. Thank you, Kyle and Caleb, for doing so. My issues turns out that I wasn't getting the proper voltage from my house to the pump. Kyle and Caleb suggestion was to have the well pump rewired from the house to the pump. It was completely needed. Day 2: I had the electrician out and did an outstanding job getting this completed in a timely fashion however, it turns out that with the proper voltage supplied to the pump the pump was old and fried out. Day 3: Called Skillings & Sons again to come out and replace the pump. I had scheduled a 2:00 PM appointment as it was the soonest available. Great to find out the morning of Skillings & Sons Technician's finished a job earlier than expected so I got a call that they can arrive earlier to replace my pump. Technician's Kyle and Jason came in to replace the pump. Extremely professional kind and courteous were the technicians on both trips to my house. They completed the job in 3.5 to 4 hours and i was given specific instructions on how to get my water back to normal. All I can say is that I would Highly recommend Skillings & Sons. Woke up this morning and found we had no water -- suspected a dead well pump. Called Skillings at 9:15. Service crew arrived around noon, and diagnosed a bad pressure switch and deteriorating pressure tank. Replaced the tank, and were done by 1:30. Friendly, informative, did nice work. About 6 months ago we needed drainage work and a well fixed. We called Skillings, and 2 men came out a few days later. The two men who came were late, and one of them, Dennis, was very condescending and rude. The price I received was significantly higher than another company I had come out a week earlier. Needless to say, I went with the other company. Won't be calling Skillings again. read more

Update to 2020 review: Since we moved to Hollis about thirty years ago, we have had a lot of admiration for Skillings. They respond very quickly when needed to, and they have professional and knowledgeable team members. We recently had Dennis and his crew dig a new well at our house. Of course there is a lot of unknown info that we wanted to know (i.e., water flow rate), so we went into this with a fair amount of doubt. I knew it wouldn't be his fault if Dennis couldn't locate a good source of water. But he did! He took us from 4 gpm to 10 gpm. We are in Florida right now but I can't wait to get home to see our faucets blasting water out! This will also help a lot with our 21-zone irrigation system. They are quick to come out but charge double what anyone else would. We won't be using them anymore. The guys they send out are condescending and flat out try to BS you- they tried to tell me my expansion tank was 10 years older than it was which was impossible since my house wasn't even built then. Everyone is in the business of making money, but no one likes to have people stand in your home and flat out lie to you. My cousin was looking for a company to fix a well, so she asked me what company I tried. Well, after trying Skillings and son's, I told her to use another company that began with a "T" This prompted me to write this review a year after my experience. My experience started off normal, but after two guys showed up, one of them named Dennis said something to me while the other guy was looking around. It was very inappropriate about my looks, then he later hit on me! I was shocked and didn't know what to do. I let them discuss what needed to be done, then let them leave after giving me a quote. I never called them back. Dennis seemed like a sexist pig, and didn't seem to care. Needless to say, I hope he isn't still with the company! Emailed them on Sunday evening. They called me early in the morning. I was losing water pressure intermittently, husband was in hospital and needed it fixed before he came home. They arrived in early afternoon, recognized what was needed, fixed it (for a reasonable price!) and water no longer turns off in the middle of a shower, laundry or doing dishes. Service men were pleasant and extremely understanding and helpful. I will always call Skillings from now on if I have water or well problems! I called Skillings May 2022 as the water pressure in my house was low. They came out the same day to assess the issue. The technician knocked on my door after the assessment and told me I needed a new well pump $3300. I told them I couldn't do it yet, but the technician Jeff Chamberlain said I had no choice as he already removed the pump, PVC piping and electrical and it was laying on my lawn. I had been forced into purchasing the new system. To make matters worse, I had friends coming over for dinner and no one could use the bathroom for 3 hours because we had to flush the system twice. I had to use bottled water to cook and wash my hands. A week later, the water pressure was low again with water sputtering out and pipes clanging every time we turned on a faucet. They came out again and told me I had a leak in the system and charged me another $1250. Nothing was under warranty. But not only that, they took my 100ft hose ($50 item) that I let them borrow. I asked for it back (and emailed their service manager), it's a year later and they haven't replaced it. It is now June 22, 2023, and my house has low pressure AGAIN. They are coming out to service today. I'm sure they will charge me an arm and leg again, and probably take my new 100ft hose (that I had to replace myself) in the process. Unfortunately, I have to use them to honor the warranty on the well pump. If not, I'd be going with someone else. read more

We lost our water on Saturday around 5:00 pm. A call to Skillings was returned by 6:00. They said they had many emergencies and would let us know on Sunday morning when they could come out. Instead, we got a call around 9:30 am that they were on their way. By noon we were flushing the chlorine out of the well with a new well pump. By 4:00 pm we had water again. That is less than 24 hours. Fantastic job by two great guys! read more

Our well was functioning just fine, but our contractor suggested we look into having a 2nd well drilled to supply our new pool house. Skillings suggested well enhancement instead to increase flow-the only risk we were told of was that it may not work. We agreed-and it collapsed our well entirely. After a long month and prolonged emergency water supply (all of which we had to pay for), it was finally fixed. Now we are stuck with a 21K bill for them to collapse our (previously entirely working) well and fix it. This is still not listed as a potential side effect of their well enhancement on their web page. read more

I just read the review from Sandy T, and it reflects an experience I had with Skillings and Sons about a year and a half ago. I called them because I needed to replace a pump, and they sent two men to look it over. One of them I believe was the same guy (Dennis) as in the earlier review. Not positively sure, but he was tall, average build, short dark hair, and looked somewhat Italian. I do know he seemed inebriated, and was making me uncomfortable with how he was talking to me. I told him he was dishonoring his girlfriend (I think he said her name was Christine) by how he was talking to me. The other guy (who's name I did not get) was fine. After the quote, (which was higher than another company I had come the day before) I let them leave and contacted someone else to take of my pump. Not sure what kind of people you hire there, but I would vet them a little better before hiring them. Can't recommend this company because of the employees, or the price being higher than the competition. read more

I will never again use Skillings and Sons for ANYTHING. Our well has been running dry over the past 10 years, and our local well guy recommended them. After discussing our options, we were sent an estimate of almost $5000 to hydro frack our well. 2 weeks later, I have heard nothing from this company on the actual date of the service. Meanwhile, we have no water in our house. Was initially given a date in July, but then no one called to confirm. Then they said their truck was "broken" but they did have a date open 2 weeks later. On the day of, they were 2 hours late, with no phone call. We did not receive a report on our well after they were done. Another person came a week later to do the water flow test, and kept walking away from my husband when he was trying to ask him questions. Then the nail in the coffin: our well had gone from 1GPM previously to 3/4 GPM AFTER THE FRACKING. Our well is now even worse off! Hydro-fracking is hailed to be 97% effective. How is it that our neighbors on either side of us, have lawn irrigation systems, and no well issues, and here we are in the unfortunate 3%. I believe the job was not done correctly, but there is no way I could prove that. After the flow test, I had to reach out to them myself, I did not even receive a callback on the test results and how they could help us going forward. I feel cheated, and we are now we are back to square one - with even less water! Their offers of putting in a new softener system in the future will never happen because I will never be calling this company again for anything. read more

Skilling & Sons drilled a 400' well for our association this past winter (2020) and brought the well online at quoted price, early and supplying 60% more water than the original estimate. They had a knowledgably foreman onsite at all times directing the operation all the time. The well was drilled quickly and the site was left with little damage to the grass area where the well was drilled. I can't say enough about Skilling who had the best quote and gave us a well that will save us $1000 of dollars over our previous water costs from Town water and we can water our grass when we want to. Hiring Skilling was one of the best decisions we have ever made for our association. We have just recently started using our new well and it works great for us with plenty of water for our 10 acre property. Hire them you will not be disappointed. read more

Though they did come out to us faster then any other company, they told us that fracking a well that is less than 250 feet will not be able to get any more water. So we had them dig deeper, to over 500 feet. Didn't find more water. They came back a week later to frack and started the fracking at 60 feet. Guess what they got more water!!! They continued to frack deeper. Now the other problem we have with them is that in order to reserve the job we had to give them a check for $10,000.00. Leaving $4,000.00 balance. We paid on the fracking and then asked for the water testing results. We were told the balance had to be paid in full before they would give us the water test results. Mind you our balance was only $1350.00. Drop in the bucket from what we had already gave them. It seems to us that they shouldn't be allowed to hold back a water test. What if our water was contaminated!!!!!! read more

I really can't imagine how anyone is giving this company a positive review unless they don't know anything about wells, pump and pressure tanks. I would count myself among those in terms of the price of parts/materials. Skillings is charging up to twice the amount that their competitors do. Additionally, if you are not paying attention, and don't know anything about your system, they will replace parts/materials that don't even need repair let alone replacement. I was charged nearly $2,200 for a job that should have cost less than $1,000. I will be filing a lawsuit. If you are in southern NH or central MA, I would recommend calling Friot Water Treatment in Ayer, MA Unlike Skilling & Sons, they are honest, trustworthy and reasonably priced. read more

I have never owned a house with a well, so well pumps, storage tanks and all that's involved with them is new to me. I had been having water pressure issues for a couple of weeks. I called Skilling, who had been recommended by a friend, to come out and look at my system. I called at 9am, they had a crew at my house at 3:30, and by 5:15 I had a new working well pump. They showed up ready to diagnose the issue and resolve the problem. Their truck had everything they needed in it. It was a shop on wheels. I am so grateful that I called them. They were very professional and not only fixed the system, but explained it to me. I now know how the system works, what to expect and how to take care of my home owner responsibilities. They gave me a very reasonable price. I will not hesitate to call them again if I need any work done on my well pump system. Poor service, high price, arrogant, rude. I wanted the Skillings person just to test the water flow rate in my well. He was rude from the start, said that he charged by the hour and it may take about an hour- four 1/2 hours later after he took my pump and piping out and drained my well, he said my flow rate was way too low (which I found out later was wrong and total BS) and all my systems should be replaced, and LUCKILY he had all the parts/pumps on his truck. I said no to the $1950 "estimate" and after putting everything back he gave me a bill for $569! He also said my indoor pump was garbage and undersized and needed to be replaced. Funny, since it was a Skillings pump bought by the previous owner (Skillings label was on the back of the pump). Nice website about Mom and Pop business and advertises on NPR; don't be fooled- they just want your money. Stay away! read more

Our well was producing 0.8 gallons/min. We received quotes from various well companies recommending anything from fracking to drilling deeper. Went with Skillings, who recommended a combination and they ended up drilling deeper. We didn't need to frack. Now we are getting 8 gallons/min. The men who showed up were awesome!!! Very professional, explained everything they were doing and their recommendations. They were very responsive to all of our questions and always called us back the same day. They had us back up and running within 2 weeks. Hope we will not need them again, but if we have any problems in the future, they will be our first call!!! read more

Water pressure was an issue as soon as we moved into our house. We had intermittent spikes in pressure regardless of whether or not we were using increased volume of water. We chalked it up to "what happens with a well" as we never had one before. Of course, that all changed quickly. I was away for work and I received a call that there is zero water pressure at the house. I called Skillings about 5 minutes after office hours started, and was immediately transferred to someone. They were incredibly polite, and said they would have someone there that day. The technician was incredibly nice, and explained what we needed - and what we didn't currently need. That alone was a breath of fresh air. Within 2 hours we had an entirely new expansion tank and filtration system. The workmanship is excellent, and the space was cleaner than before he started. Also the water pressure is MUCH better! Can't say enough about the staff, and how prompt and polite they were. When it comes time to do any additional work - which we inevitably will - they will be the only call I make. read more

What a horrible company. They lied when they did not fulfill their obligation to put my yard back in the same condition. They overcharged me and again lied about what they actually did. They are a sub standard company that can't so a simple project , not honorable , they'll yes you to death and then run when you confront them. I had a budget Denise said we can work with in that , then charged me $8. k more. and said, " oh well I promised nothing " After that he then sent me another bill for $1200. and said he forgot he undercharged me in fact. When they were done after taking almost 4 weeks to finish , rain water filled pockets in the yard and caused sink holes where the foundation of my home was exposed and water was washing away which caused issues with the foundation . ( flooding) they also without me agreeing to a deeper well, drilled more and said " now you have extra space for water" good talkers they are but, so dishonest. We had a well in the basement of our home that we wanted to get rid of as we have small children. After having no luck with local companies we called Skillings & Sons who were located over an hour away. They were extremely knowledgeable and helpful in their suggestions for what to do with the well and Alan and his guys did a fantastic job with it. They were very professional in their work, even thoroughly cleaning up the room when they were finished. On top of all that, the bill ended up being much less than the high estimate we were quoted. We had a simple but critical repair that needed to be done on our water filter, which was leaking and made it impossible for us to use the well water. Be very careful when dealing with this company. Not only are they late on all their appointments but the techs always have an attitude problem. At their last visit here, all that we needed done was to have the filters for our well pump moved to the other side of the basement CLOSER to the pump, and the tech got all pissed off like we were asking him to dig a new well or something. Very poor customer service. Last week they were servicing my neighbors pump and system. They were supposed to be there at 1500 and didn't show up until 1800, so you know he was already in a hurry. I was out riding bikes with my family when he decided to back out of the driveway at full speed without even looking. I pulled my son out of the way, but accidentally fell of my bike and hit the pavement shoulder first, breaking my collar bone. It just goes to show how "timely" they are. read more

Bad situation made perfect by people at Skilling. I purchase my home approximately 18 years ago. I have well water and needed to get a new system. My home already had a Skilling's water purification system in it - so it was obvious to go back to the original installer. The system had never been maintained (I was under impression from seller "it didnt need any attention"). We had a terrible time with hard water and what we thought was iron but was manganese (rust spots on tub and sink). Wife called Skilling asked for a quote. The salesman had her totally confused feeling very uncomfortable. I asked if I could speak with a Manager in sales - Andrea. She was awesome, understood what happened, made us feel very comfortable with what we needed to install, and the price and had installers in my home within a week to setup new system. really could not be happier with Skilling and the service and quality of work they did. You could tell they all really known their stuff. They extended the casing on my artesian well and replacing the old, rotted, pressure tank and switches. Came out great. Here's the shocker ... Within 10 mins they knew it was my pump and within an hour it was replaced. More than what I wanted to spend but overall was not bad price wise. The only thing I would have liked them to discuss what they are going to do and how much it will cost before they start doing the work. what if it was something I could not afford and they did all that work and I got the bill at the end not knowing how much it was going to be.
