From the owners to the kids, they hustle and do EVERYTHING to please. The flavors are varied, numerous & fantastic. The toppings are generous & delicious, served evenly and never skimped. They let you taste anything you desire. They hand-make a TON of soft serves; they have Dole whip! The prices are reasonable. They move the line VERY quickly. So from very high quality ice cream to great toppings, exceptional service and reasonable prices, it's no wonder the line wraps around the corner. As a vegan, treat options are few and far between on the island. I was ecstatic to find out that Skipper Dipper offers So Delicious Dairy-Free vanilla ice cream - it hit the spot topped with crushed Oreos. I'm so happy to be able to get ice cream out at an actual ice cream shop and not from the supermarket. This ice cream place is my fiance and I's favorite place to get ice cream on the island. They have SO. MANY. FLAVORS. (Both in hard and soft serve) as well as a VARIETY of toppings. I ordered a Java Chunk milkshake and my fiance got a black and white milkshake. My friend ordered one scoop of java chunk and one scoop of black raspberry, as well as two scoops of Java Chunk for her Mom. Ordering is a breeze! Love, love, LOVE Skipper Dipper!!! It's been a family favorite for many years and we visit multiple times during our LBI stay. I would not get ice cream anywhere else! Last year, Skip really kicked it up a notch with the pineapple whip soft serve, it is SO. GOOD. On the recommendation of one of the dippers, I twisted the pineapple whip with vanilla soft serve. Best ever!! I am craving it right now! Speaking of the dippers, they are so great! They get the lines moving quickly and are also so friendly! If you love Skipper Dipper as much as I do, don't leave without a shirt. I have two that I love wearing at home in PA (proudly, of course). I scream, you scream, we all scream for awesome. I love this place. My parents used to take us every summer when were little and it just reminds me of my childhood. This past weekend, I came back here with my parents and 5 year old sister, pleased to see that it was just as great as I remembered. Parents of young children: do NOT let them make the same disastrous mistake I did. The same glorious, delicious, mistake I did. It began when I decided a cone would be easier for the 'ol walk n' eat. Obviously a waffle cone is the only true option. My second tactical mistake was being too clever by half and having the troop of ice cream workers sandwich hot fudge between my two scoops of moosetrack. "Why didn't you just skip the hot fudge?" Did that thought go through your mind? You disgust me. The final, fatal error was calculating that the ice cream would freeze the hot fudge, instead of the hot fudge melting the ice cream. The late August humidity sealed my fate. The first few steps and licks were delicious and uneventful, but I knew the initial drip that struck my hand was foreshadowing the catastrophe to come. The faster I consumed it, the faster she melted. Eventually the drips merged into a stream, then a deluge. Then the first crack struck. Part of what made the waffle cone such an essential choice was their homemade authenticity, as if they were poured, rolled, and hardened earlier that day. But that same country appeal also compromised their structural integrity. One of the display models had a hole in it. Another had a swath of near translucent batter, it was so thin. This would be my undoing. Like the terrible volcano that struck LA in the movie, "Volcano", the hot fudge didn't just melt the ice cream, it began cracking the cone. First a piece at the top, then a lightning break down the seam, finally, there was no cone, only icebergs of waffle struggling to hang onto the fast retreating ice cream. By the end, I needed both hands to finish the amorphous blob of goop that remained, but I did finish. And it was delicious. I'd do it again. read more

From our phone call ahead to check, with excellent customer service, to orders taken in line to expedite the process, to countless flavors and options all scooped with a smile, to DOLE PINEAPPLE WHIP swirled with coconut-milk soft-serve, to handi-wipes and temporary tattoos delivered as we relaxed outside... we couldn't have asked for a better experience. Store was clean, tables and benches as well (and that takes work on a busy night!). Having worked at and frequented plenty of island businesses (and driven by countless times thinking it would be less than stellar quality and/or typical touristy hype) we are so glad we stopped in. LARGEST selection of ice cream I have EVER seen. This place has been an LBI staple for almost 40 years, but this summer was my first time visiting the famous ice cream joint. As a big ice cream fan, I was eager to see if Skipper Dipper lived up the the hype. The menu is a bit overwhelming because there are probably hundreds of options to choose from, but that also means there is something for everyone. Don't let the line down the street scare you away. They literally have an army of "certified dippers" working to take your order and have it ready by the time you reach the front counter. I probably waited about 15 mins total in line at around 10 PM on a weekday in August. As for the ice cream, it was really good. Not the best I have ever had, but definitely not the worst. My brother had a cookie dough milkshake and was slightly disappointed because it was mostly milk and not as thick and creamy as he would have liked. Definitely choose from one of the many hard ice cream flavors instead of the soft serve. Overall worth the visit once a year when in LBI. read more

If a place has almost two dozen soft serve flavors, you figure it's their specialty or something, right? Apparently not... First off, I applaud Skipper Dipper for their inventive way to help people avoid waiting forever to get their ice cream. That said, we had three major problems with their model: 1. Teach your 'waitresses' the menu. I understand they probably hire people just for the summer, but we had several questions about flavors/toppings and the girl taking our order was literally unable to answer any of them (like what's the difference between the two coffee soft serve flavors). 2. Can't sample anything. This is especially an issue when you have such an inordinate amount of flavors to choose from. Always like ice cream joints where you can try something before buying it. 3. Specials. Since they weren't on the menu and our 'waitress' didn't mention that they had any, we didn't find out about their daily special flavors until we actually got inside to pay. A big shame since they sounded delicious and we probably would have ordered them given the chance. Next, the soft serve took forever to actually reach our cups and was so disappointing; it was melty and completely flavorless. I ordered espresso roast and cheesecake, both of which I would have believed were actually vanilla had I been told so. They tasted like nothing but cream, as did the flavors ordered by others in my party. The only other redeeming quality about Skipper Dipper was their hard ice cream, which was actually pretty good. I love ice cream. I yelped to find which place on LBI has the highest rating. Skipper Dipper did!!! So we went there and were left with disappointment. The icecream tastes like....sugar! Shame there's so little flavor to it.... And the sugar free options have the substitute of sucralose (a nasty substitute, nutrient lacking sugar, which majority of ingested is not broken down by your body... - good luck feeding your children that!!!!) I opted out for the sugar free one (before I found that about the sugar substitute) and it just tastes foul. They have no fresh toppings, like fruits, only sugary or salty ones. I actually had some fresh blueberries in the car and I added those myself. Still I didn't not want to finish my ice cream. The aftertaste is like you'd expect from the sugar substitute - chemical in your mouth that's just blaaaah... So I'm not sure why this place is so highly rated.... Take aside the unhealthy facts. Insane. Simply insane. Delicious flavors, wonderful hosts who make the obscenely long line move surprisingly swiftly, very large portions at fair prices. So much to rave about. But it's the ice cream that steals the show. Wonderfully rich -- the traditionals and always a few specials that are simply over-the-top good. This is a fun place to go to -- and go we do -- every night when we're in LBI. There are other ice cream places - a ton of 'em -- and I'm sure they're good -- but it is impossible to contemplate anything comparable to Skipper Dipper. There's a certain romance in the idea of Ice Cream on LBI -- it may enhance the flavor too -- I don't know. I'm sure about one thing -- we'll keep going and going and going. Yum. After reading the rave reviews on Yelp about Skipper Dipper my family had to check it out. The line was a little long but the idea of having the staff come take your order while on the line and start making the ice cream so when you get up to the counter your order is ready is pure genius. They do have many different varieties of ice cream and toppings. The ice cream was good. Though being a family of ice cream connoisseurs and a family who makes their own homemade ice cream the ice cream here wasn't as rich as we prefer. My son recommends the bubble gum flavor. Prices are moderate. The staff was willing to make almost any request you can come up with. We will visit again. Highly recommend this ice cream place since it seems to be the best LBI has to offer. read more
