(4.25 Stars) Now in its 40th year of operation, Skipper Dipper is a local institution for good reason; they do so much right. Open only on weekends during the shore season, even an unseasonably cool and rainy mid-May night found them crowded. Their staff is fast, efficient and very friendly, so the lines do move quickly. Fortunately, their product is worth the wait. Skipper Dipper has ice cream covered from all angles: over two dozen flavors of scooped (hard) ice cream, frozen yogurt, soy milk, soft serve (including Dole Whip pineapple and coconut milk), dozens of hand-mixed soft serve flavors and enough sauces, syrups, sprinkles, hard shells, and candy and cereal toppings to please everyone. Cups or two choices of cone add to the choices. For the chronically indecisive both samples and patience are provided generously. Of course with so many frozen dessert choices, sundaes, shakes, malts, floats and ice cream sodas are made to order. I found the Skipper Dipper ice cream to be at a very acceptable mid-range between generic and premium grades. Their ice cream has a pleasant creaminess and mouth-feel without being decadently rich. The three scoops in my cup were Death By Chocolate, Salted Caramel and Vanilla Peanut Butter-- each was very good, but the Salted Caramel was overshadowed by the others. Death By Chocolate was my favorite of the three. At $4.15 for two generous scoops or $5.35 for three their basic ice cream was neither inexpensive nor expensive. Most sundaes cost only a little more and the add-in's are either .50 or .75 each. Skipper Dipper is a fun stop for people of all ages, and that is reflected in their lines. Frankly, I'm not sure that any eatery on LBI which doesn't attract a crowd on an in-season weekend evening wouldn't raise some suspicion. I come to Skipper Dipper for one thing and one thing only: the magical ice cream machine that blends soft ice cream with a topping. Skipper Dipper has dozens of ice cream flavors, hard and soft serve, which is the main allure for most. But the soft vanilla ice cream twisted with Oreo chunks IS ARE OF MY THE DREAMS. Between 7pm-10pm, the line is out the door and around the building. People wait forever to eat the ice cream from Skipper Dipper. Is it worth it? I would say so. There are tons of other ice cream places on the island, but if you want that magical topping-twist ice cream in a homemade waffle cone, you'll wait four and a half hours (the wait is never that long, just an exaggeration). Rounding off its 39th season, I'm sure the Skipper Dipper has always been cranking out the same delicious ice cream served up by super hospitable, friendly staff. We took an ice cream break on a morning bike ride and to our surprised arrived 12-15 minutes before opening. Who eats ice cream before 11am?! Sheesh, apparently we do. We were politely greeted by everyone that was setting up the tables and such and next thing you know, they happily served us before opening. They have flavors and cone choices for whatever you fancy. I nearly gasped when I saw that they offered Rainbow Sherbet and immediately that was my choice has I haven't had that in years. We were given a punch card that hello, never expires! Total satisfaction for any age. Forget the line that may back up or circle the building. That's not what matters. What does matter is when you finally arrive inside the Skipper Dipper and now have to make a critical decision----- what type of ice cream (soft or hard), what flavor (too many to list in a review, but if you can't find it, it probably doesn't exist), how many scoops, what type of toppings, what type of container (cup or cone). Even the cones have many selections for waffle, pretzel, cookie, sugar, wafer. They even offer non dairy as well as yogurt. If you get the Skipper Dipper punch card, there's a good chance you'll get some freebies as well. They do a great job keeping the line moving by taking your order while you're waiting on line as opposed to only when you get to the counter. In fairness to others, use your time on line to make a decision---I know it's tough, but you can also come back later and get something different. They appear to use Giffords Ice Cream out of Skowhegan, Maine as their hard ice cream supplier. Very good quality, not your typical commercial brand. I had the caramel praline and death by chocolate. It wasn't too busy, parked in their parking lot, and went inside.
