My friend wanted to come here after seeing it on some instagram post. We trekked 25 minutes in the summer heat from the downtown area to get there... The community of shops and restaurants here were fun to explore, but I wouldn't say this restaurant is a place tourists need to visit. They open at 11:00am and when we arrived at ~11:10am, we were the first customers there. The interior is a bit dim but sunlight from their narrow storefront helped illuminate the place. It smelled a bit musky inside too but not intolerable. I ordered the N11 and my friend ordered the N1. We shared an order of chicken satay. The chicken satay was underwhelming especially given how they market it as their top item. The meat was tender but not as tender and juicy as I was hoping. The satay sauce was sweet and peanut forward (not like peanut butter) which was nice but I was hoping for more umami. I ended up enjoying the cucumbers at the bottom of this dish more than the actual meat and sauce. I got N11 because I like eating laksa, but I also found the dish disappointing. It's alright but again not worth the hype it gets from others. It wasn't spicy at all, like maybe 1.5/10. The broth was mostly creamy salty flavor rather than full of spices. I know it doesn't have seafood explicitly in it, but the fish cakes and fish balls would do well with meatier broth. The fish ball and fish cakes weren't bouncy and tasted quite fishy. The tofu pieces weren't fresh but not spoiled to a point I needed to call it out. Maybe the only thing I liked was the texture of the noodles. My friend's N1 tasted more like a soy sauce based sauce. I didn't like that sauce nor the texture of her noodles, so I was glad to stick with mine. She preferred her's more too. She said the more she ate, the milddddd heat in her sauce accumulated and made it too spicy for her to finish the last bite. I didn't taste any heat when I tried a bite, but maybe it was too small. The marinated short rib was nice and tender but a little too sweet for my taste. Still very good. I'm not big on fish, but this was pretty good. The beef rendang was by far the best dish we had. It had nice coconut flavors. The main issue was the service was extremely slow. We were served appetizers about 45 minutes after sitting down. We don't have Indonesian restaurant in Chicago so the first thing we do after we get into Philly is to eat Indonesian dish. Food - Everything were so good and delicious. Sky cafe is nestled in a little Asian strip mall. I love that there's a parking lot here! We stopped by for dinner and ordered Nasi Padang, Kwetiaw goreng, and Nasi goreng spesial. Inside is cozy with dim lighting. And service is friendly. When we sat down we were given a hot tea which was perfect for a cold winter day. Nasi padang: this dish was a spread of 6 different little dishes with a side of rice. I enjoyed sampling all of the different things and particularly liked the coconut spinach dish and the coconut curry chicken. The noodles for mi go reng is more like lo mein. It has chinese sausage, shrimp, and not a lot of veggie. The curry noodle soup is very coconut-y and a little spicy. Super pleasant service. Wasn't sure what to order as there are a ton of things we were interested but I did know I was buying for later in the day, i.e. re-heating. The hostess/owner?/waitress? was great at guiding us towards a dish that would work well re-heated as such (we knew a lot of the pan-fried noodle dishes wouldn't do so well). Some of the best, casual dining in all of Philly! We went early on a Saturday and it was PACKED but we were seated immediately! The sound level was lively but you also notice some were quiet as people happily ate full tables of food! A great sign! Someone standing outside made a comment "this is my FAVORITE spot in all of Philly. The #23 (nasi bungkis) is the best thing I have ever eaten" and dang they were right! We wondered the #22 and #23 and devoured as much as we could... but the servings were MASSIVE and we had a good amount of leftovers! Indonesian food isn't easy to come by so Sky Cafe is a very special place! It has similarities to Malaysian and Thai food so if you like either you should give this a try. Sky Cafe is a homey place that has pretty simple decor and service like a lot of low-key Asian restaurants, but it gets the job done and the food is the main point at these kinds of spots anyway. Note that there is a 4% fee for credit cards, but the menu is very transparent about this and even separately lists the cash and card prices. The prices are super affordable anyway so it doesn't even amount to much. I've been here a couple times both in pairs and with a larger group and enjoyed each time. The coconut rice dishes are very popular here, coming with a big scoop of fragrant rice, a portion of a selected entree (beef rendang is a classic), and some sides that altogether make a very filling meal. Another go-to here is the satay - the chicken satay are PERFECTLY grilled and I could just drink that peanut sauce. My most recent time, I decided to get the kari bihun since I'm a sucker for curry noodle soups in other cuisines. This one hit the spot, packed with a variety of proteins like fish cakes and tofu and deep-fried egg, and a delicious broth that I couldn't finish but took home with me because I couldn't bear to waste it. Overall, Sky Cafe offers really interesting, flavorful, and filling food at reasonable prices. It has a big menu I've barely even dented so I will definitely be back to try more! read more

Excellent Indonesian food in Philadelphia! The chicken satay has a perfect charred texture with nice savory and acidic notes. The fried wontons are super crispy, similar to a crab rangoon. The entrée itself was good. I thought the chicken was a little dry and could use some sauce, but the coconut rice and sides were delicious. Service was extremely good and friendly. The appetizers came out within five minutes of ordering. The Wing Phat plaza is a bit hard to find parking in, but making a stop is always worth it. Located in the "Vietnamese strip mall", this place offers a change to "pho" and other Vietnamese dishes. Sky cafe offers decent Indonesian food. We started with the chicken satay which tasted pretty good since it was covered in peanut sauce. I do wish the chicken satay had more of a charcoal taste. I had the spare rib. The spare rib was so tender it fell off the bone. The sauces accompanying the spare rib were so spicy (both the red one and the green one). Not picture is the Spicy Chicken Rice Platter. Even though it was only one chicken leg, the chicken looked like it was good quality. The hard boiled egg in the dish was topped with spices. It can get packed, but the service is good and the servers are really friendly! I ordered the Nasi Lemak Ayam Goreng (Sky's Coconut Rice with Fried Chicken). The fried chicken was crispy and juicy! I ate it with the rice, which did not taste like coconut, but it did come with some sort of fried onions on it that gave the rice some flavor. There was also a red paste that arrived with the dish and that worked well with the fried chicken and spicy egg! The dish also had pickled vegetables, but since I am not a big vegetable person, I only ate a bit. But it was still pretty good and pickle-y. There were anchovies that came with the dish but I did not see them. I think it may have been the fried pieces on the side which helped add flavor to the already delicious meal! My friend and I split the Ground Chicken Fried Wonton which I was not a big fan of as it felt like the chicken should've still been cooked. This was my first experience having Indonesian food, and I really enjoyed it. The staff was great and the inside of the restaurant was quite cute - they have handwritten food facts/tidbits on the wall which was cool. We ordered pempek (appetizer) to share - it was chewy but slightly crispy on the outside, there was egg wrapped inside, and the vinegar sauce was great! I got R17, and the portion size was good and worth the price. I was extra hungry so I ate the whole thing, but I typically would have leftovers for another meal. The chicken wasn't dry, the sambal had a good kick, and the potato (I think) side on the plate was really good. I was expecting the veggie curry to be thicker, but it was still good over the rice. Sky Cafe is a local Indonesian restaurant located in a convenient South Philly plaza next to the iconic Pho 75. If you're new to Indonesian cuisine, I would highly recommend starting here! Anything you order off the menu will be delicious and there are several options! We ordered the Pempek to share. It's my first time getting this dish and I would highly recommend. It is deep fried fish cake wrapped around egg on a bed of fried noodles. The exterior is perfectly crispy and when you bite in, it's nice and soft. Not overly seasoned so it pairs beautifully with the sweet vinegar sauce. The noodles are plain but still good to eat. For my entree, I ordered the R12 (spicy chicken rice platter). The chicken is super crispy and juicy and perfect to pair with the sambal especially when eating with the rice as it can definitely feel dry. However, there is also the veggie curry which is more of a soup rather than thick curries from other cultures. It is filled with veggies and pairs well with the rice/chicken whenever you feel like it's getting dry! Shrimp crackers are delicious dipped into the curry as well. Platter also comes with a lightly deep fried hard boiled egg topped with sambal; nothing special to note, its taste exactly as you would imagine. And lastly there is a deep fried tofu/potato side dish which is not heavily seasoned and too oily for my taste. Overall, the platter is incredibly balanced and tastes great! Came here for an Indonesian fix with the family. Came at an odd hour so it wasn't packed at all. We were seated right away. The menu is quite extensive with loads to choose from. I've not had an avocado juice in ages so was so happy to see it on the menu and ordered it. It tasted pretty legit - similar to what you will get in Indonesia. The food was amazing, especially their sambal that went with the grilled ribs (nasi iga bakar). Their Nasi Bungkus (banana leaf wrapped mixed rice) was superb too. I had it with their spicy beef (dendeng balado) instead of rendang. Spicy but totally hit the spot! Sending me back to memory lane! Super authentic. Another version of this would be the excellent Nasi Padang. I think they just got the spices right on the sauces. Their homemade bakso was also good especially the meatballs themselves. Their Sate Padang was made of tender beef tongue drenched in yum Padang sauce. I was not a fan of their chicken sate because the meat was a bit too tender/mushy to me, but my family loved it. And as for the drinks, the avocado smoothies themselves just kept me wanting to keep going back. The only one in the country that did it with epic flavors: avocado smoothie with chocolate/coffee. Comparable to the best in Indonesia. Great fried flat noodle too. And if you wanna try the original tempeh, how it would be served, try their fried tempeh. The only thing so far I wouldn't recommend was the Nasi Medan. I think the pork meat was too porky, and the dish was more like room temperature. Not a fan. Service was decent depending on which server you got. The place inside a bit tight. Parking was horrendous but that was just Philly. We went on the weekend, people were lining up to dine in. I've been here a couple of times now, but I felt like the flavors were slightly muted this time around--likely to accommodate a growing demographic that goes to this restaurant. The meat was tender with a barbeque/grilled flavor but was a bit scarce on my plate compared to my friend's. The veggies were fine but weren't that presentable, and the veggie soup was a standard bowl of boiled cabbage, carrots, and potatoes with some stock. The sauces are super spicy by the way-- I took a big spoonful at the start and was recovering throughout the rest of the meal haha. Otherwise, the vibes of the restaurant was great. My parents immigrated from Indonesia, and this is their favorite Indonesian restaurant in Philadelphia. My mom especially loves their Es Teler, a shaved ice dessert with sweet syrup and lots of yummies (jellies, avocado, etc.). She will get one as a "drink" and finish it before her main course, and then she'll get another one for dessert later! This is a IYKYK type of restaurant - it's in a strip mall with limited parking and doesn't look flashy from the outside. But despite that, it's worth a visit to try Indonesian food. Even if you don't have a lot of time, you can order to-go and they also have boxed snacks in the back like nastar (pineapple cookies). Highly recommend Sky Cafe. Got takeout here the other day while stopping by the nearby grocery store. Love that you can venmo instead of pay cash! We got the chicken satay and beef rendang. Both were good but the flavor of the beef definitely stood out. It was really complex and well-seasoned and I loved the egg that came with it which provided a slightly spicy contrast. My main issues with the two dishes we ordered are just that everything skewed very sweet. The sauce with the satay was very sweet, the vegetables and fried anchovies and stuff with the beef were VERY sweet. And the beef could've been a little more tender.
