Los Alamos is a great alternative place to stay for Santa Ynez wine tasting. It's like how Los Olivos was 15 years ago before it became a bit touristy. The Skyview Motel is a hip, quaint place to spend a night or two. Although their retro yellow motel sign might make you think the place is dated, it has in fact been nicely updated and the rooms are comfortable, clean, and provide a refreshing oasis for relaxation. DO NOT STAY HERE. The food is gross and the customer service is even worse. I've eaten here and planned to have my family members stay here and I'm sorry I ever thought highly of this place. Doesn't take responsibility when mistakes are made and does absolutely nothing to accommodate. I was charged 4 times the amount I was supposed to be. I canceled my stay and it took them 3 days to even cancel my reservation, so when I was expecting my money back on 3 business days I log onto my account and see that instead of a refund they charged me again. Matt, the manager was extremely condescending and laughed at me while saying "I don't know what you want me to do about it" so because of their mistake I'm out of luck (not to mention it's a holiday weekend) After this conversation I was upset I had to transfer money from my savings to my checking account and in seconds Skyview Hotel took the money again out of my account. Stopped at the skyview to see if we'd like to stay here for our anniversary. Had a couple drinks and chips and guacamole. It was a perfect quick stop on our way back to Slo. Overall, our experience was good. The wine selection was underwhelming considering all the incredible wine in the area, so I opted for a rum punch, which was good! This review is for the restaurant. When we arrived everything was perfect. We were greeted by George, the manager, who is an absolute delight. We started out with craft cocktails at the bar with a gorgeous view. We were celebrating a dear friend's birthday, so after some cheese and charcuterie, we decided to stay for dinner. And that was probably a mistake. The food I had was so bad, I actually sent back both started and main. First there was a warm chanterelle salad. It sounded delicious as I love chanterelles. I make them at home with French butter and parsley. These were greasy but not from butter, cold, and flavorless. The main course, a steak, tasted only burnt without any seasoning whatsoever. To add to this, after sunset, it was so dark in the restaurant we actually could not see our food without the help of a mobile phone flashlight app. We were told it was at the wish of the property manager, and George apologized. We did enjoy desserts and the superb service from George. If it weren't for him, the bar tender, and the day time ambience, this restaurant would get 1 star. read more

Edited 3/15/21: I dropped my review from 4 stars to 2 stars following issues with their billing since check out. 1) First they overcharged me for 2 dogs instead of 1, which I had to point out on the invoice after check out. 2) Then, they charged me $37 for mini bar items which the PREVIOUS GUESTS consumed. The hotel made it right and will reimburse me, but I'm extremely annoyed that I've had to closely monitor my Visa bill following this stay due to their erroneous billing. Their housekeeping should closely monitor the mini bar after each check out. Don't charge us for crap the previous guests consumed. 3) Why is my dog charged an occupancy tax? What?! Be aware that the taxes and hidden fees add up a lot. Review your bill after check-out. 4) I'm pretty sure the 20-something amateur Instagram photographers in the pool (see attached pics) were not hotel guests. They showed up like they owned the place and stayed during 2 overlapping pool reservation slots. Management did nothing when I texted them pictures of them w/their lighting/photo rig when I thought that our pool reservation meant private use. Pool is not locked and apparently anyone can use. We were going nuts after 1 full year of work-from-home due to Covid, and we wanted a short trip nearby. Enter Los Alamos, our favorite town for good eats, great nighttime star-viewing, and beautiful nature! Overall, this motel is a great option, although it's expensive for a weekday visit during the off-season. Our Superior room started at $229 plus $20 resort fee plus $50 pet fee per dog (max of 2 dogs/room) plus $7 PPE fee plus taxes. They are dog friendly, although they charge the aforementioned pet fee plus a 12% occupancy tax equal to $6 per dog for a grand total of $56/dog. At the motel entrance, there is a fork in the road with two steep roads on either side. Go to the left to park for check-in and the restaurant, and go to the right for overnight hotel parking. Parking can get busy at night so folks end up parking along the steep hill. Their overnight parking lot is not large enough for all 30 or 31 rooms at the motel. It would be nice if their parking lot were paved with parking space lines to ensure efficient parking as otherwise folks park a wee bit all over the place. With regards to the room, the bed was comfortable, the bed frame was a soft velvet, the TV had DirectTV with a ton of channels, the clock radio was fancy w/Bluetooth that I couldn't figure out haha, they had a mini bar with liquor and kinda pricey snacks. They do not provide a mini fridge in most rooms which was disappointing. We brought along a cooler and filled it up with ice from their machine to keep cold beverages on hand. The bathroom was super cute with tile floors- the shower water got very hot although the shower itself was a bit small. The huge bathroom sink doesn't have space for beauty products (there are small ledges nearby thou) and I splashed water all over myself while washing my face at night. I appreciated the bathroom fan, wide open bathroom window to our patio, and the various lighting options both in the bathroom and bedroom. There's also a blue light option in the bathroom which I think you can use as a nightlight. We had a private patio which we really enjoyed. The hotel website shows 2 nice padded lounger's for the Superior rooms, but we only got a small red metal loveseat situation and a side table. I really would have preferred the comfy loungers! The in-room fireplace was cozy, and we are so grateful to the employee who helped replace batteries on both the fireplace and the remote so we could use it. She also turned on the firepit nearby the restaurant so we could enjoy it at night- I think employees need to be a jack of all trades here! We had a bit of confusion about the pool. During Covid-times, other larger hotels require reservations for 1 hour private pool use. We expected the same here. However, it turns out that their 2 hour pool reservation times simply ensure a lounger and some spacing between other guests nearby the pool. When we arrived at the pool, we saw restaurant guests dining outside Norman very close to the pool with no privacy between spaces (add a partition or trellis!), some folks doing a photoshoot with lights, cameras, etc at the pool, and other guests arriving. Such a cute little boutique/motel/hotel. Although there's not much around this area, I would definitely go back! Beds were super comfortable. Property was really quiet. There's a pool/lounge area. It was so relaxing for us. And pet friendly! At night, got to do some star gazing since there's nothing around that area. It's about 20 minutes away from Solvang and right up near the air force base. There's a restaurant/bar right on the property that connects to the pool area. If you drive about 2 minutes out, there are some local restaurants, markets and small wineries. Unique hotel/motel experience on the hills of historic Los Alamos. This place is like a gem in this town-it's clean, beautifully remodeled, furnished with mid century modern style and has nice and polite staff. They were offering bikes to borrow to visit the town in just 7minutes! I loved that Skyview was located kn top of the city and had absolutely amazing views of the hills and vineyards of the town. Although we visited the town while it was sooo windy, we could still easily use their heated pool as it was surrounded by glass covers around. My husband & I came to the area for a weekend stay. All that was available was a room at the Skyview, we LOVED it! The staff was very friendly and accommodating. We asked for extra pillows and received them before we had even unpacked. The rooms are very clean and cozy. They did a great job w their recent remodel. Nick at their bar at Normans was very friendly and kind. He made a great "leaded" hot chocolate and my husband loved his Old Fashioned. We enjoyed our afternoon sitting on the patio overlooking the view and enjoyed our fire pit in the evenings. Thank you all for making our stay so wonderful! Holy shit. What a magical place. From the awesome 360 view, to the great food & drinks, & relaxing pool, I couldn't be more impressed. The whole place has a modern rustic vibe. We stayed in the king deluxe suite which included a sweet back patio with a fire pit that worked on the turn of a knob. Outdoor shower for ur morning wake up. The pool is great as well. Water is HEATED. U just jump right in and relax. DELICIOUS drinks to enjoy while u float. I recommend the "Sunrise" which was our go to during the day. The staff was extremely friendly and fun. Darren, makes the best whiskey sours in town. The restaurant is delicious and offers the most perfect outdoor seating for the sunsets. The poached peaches for dessert is a must. At night pathways are lit up with tiki torches which was my favorite. We also laid in the driveway to watch the stars. A must go for everyone. Coming back with all my friends. Only downfall? Love what they did and refurbishing the old old motel. Unfortunately, they have the softest beds. I have ever experienced anywhere in my life. I laid on the bed and my hips touched the bed frame. RIPOFF!! Read the fine print. I went online to book a room, and selected a room for $299 a night for a weekend. We stayed, we paid, but when I checked my email receipt later, I was charged $399 a night, not $299! I had expected to pay the room charge that was posted on their web site. The management had surreptitiously changed the room fee from $299 to $399 on my confirmation email, without informing me. The management said they wouldn't change the charge. Yes, I should have read this in advance. But I just assumed that the price I had agreed to would be the price I would be charged. There are plenty of charming motels to stay in this area. In a word - underwhelming. First, the positives: The motel is as pictured on its website. It sits on a hill so there are nice views of the surrounding area and as it's name suggests there are nice views of the sky for stargazing at night. The mediocre: bedsheet had a large tear in it, towels were worn. We stayed in a classic room which is quite small (200 sq. ft. per the website). There is room for a bed, two night stands, a chair, and a bar cart, but there is no small table should you need a surface to eat room service on or do a little work. Because the hotel sits on a hill, parking is a little difficult, there is a small lot at the top but if it's full you may have to park at the bottom of the hill and walk up. The bad: The dreaded resort fee. An excuse for hotels/motels to list a lower price, then tack on a fee for things that should already be included. The $20/night fee includes: use of the bikes and pool, in-room Nespresso maker, wifi, parking, and a $10 breakfast credit. There was indeed a Nespresso maker in the room but there were no pods, and when I texted the front desk and I never received a response. Another guest also mentioned a lack of in-room pods. They also charge a $7 fee for PPE but given that California's mask mandate has been lifted and not one staff member was wearing a mask, I'm not sure what I was charged for. Finally, the power went out the morning we were leaving so there was no electricity or hot water and we were not able to properly prepare for an event we had to get to. They offered to waive the resort fee for one day which felt inadequate. After receiving my invoice via e-mail I reached out to them regarding a correction, and just received a blank e-mail with the exact same invoice attached. TLDR: Skip. read more

The best of both worlds' philosophy preserves the historic elements of the property while offering guests a modern luxury experience." The check-in area is along one side of the long tree-lined driveway leading up to the hotel. Every detail of this property has been designed to pay homage to the time period while providing a clean aesthetically pleasing feel. We were upgraded to a larger suite because we were celebrating a birthday and served complimentary rosé (standard with all check-in). We were told about the amenities the property had to offer including cruiser bikes that were free to check out and ride around town. The keys to each room are metal with a branded keychain attached, a very retro detail with an upscale feel. The area between rooms has been landscaped to highlight the colors of the area and feels very palm springs, providing a fire pit for the evening as well as rain chains, succulents, and paved walking area. The rooms are simply stunning. Mid-century details compliment the updated modern amenities. The bathrooms have farm sinks and luxurious California-crafted soaps. The door to the back leads out to the private patio with a table and loveseat. We dined at Norman, the on-property restaurant. We each ordered the chicken and shared a cheeseboard with cocktails. We didn't capture any photos of the chicken because it was so delicious it barely sat on our table. The cocktails were light and fit the flavors of the season. After dinner and in the morning, we enjoyed the heated pool with plenty of lounge seating. You can see the old "MOTEL" sign from the pool and adds a nice vintage nod to the original historic property. This is a beautiful getaway nestled between Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo. The good news: Kind of a mixed bag. I loved the renovation. Class act with quality materials and construction. The rooms are every bit as nice as the website's eye-candy photos. Beautiful landscaping and views and a genuinely (surprisingly) good restaurant. The outdoor portion of the restaurant toward the pool is stylish and comfortable. We didn't use the pool but it didn't look up to the aesthetic of the rest of the motel's renovation. Now the not-so-bad news: Indifferent front desk staff (with the exception of one) Beds are too soft No outside food allowed on the property. No, seriously. Now the comical part: Hotel is not responsible for lewd acts that may occur on the semi-private patios. We weren't lucky enough to see one, however, but your initials will relieve the motel of any such responsibility. Now the worst news: This motel is becoming quite the LA scene. Lots of really douchey people: loud, smokers (yes, we saw two!), chicks in their matching 'hey, where did you get that cute' leather cowgirl hats and club attire. Really? Hot date in Los Alamos?? The pool was quite a party scene, (at least one night we were there) and when the pool closed, they moved the party to their "private" patios NEXT TO US. And this was April. Can't imagine summer here. Apparently the motel has no designated quiet time. I didn't see how many cars with spoilers were in the parking lot, but then I didn't really look. My guess is quite a few. If that scene doesn't bother you, or if you even like it, or if you drive a car with a spoiler, then, yes, you too can drive 3 hours north of Los Angeles and get your cowboy on. My wife and I found a great price on Hotel Tonight and decided to drive up from Los Angeles. After a day hitting up the tasting rooms of Los Olivos we couldn't have been happier with our experience at Skyview. Considering they had only recently opened earlier in the month, they were on point with all steps of service. Upon arrival we were offered a complimentary glass of wine which we graciously accepted and downed probably a little too eagerly. Check in was easy and the staff was well trained and super pleasant. The motel itself is dope. The lay out is open and inviting. The decor and accents lend itself towards 60s era Palm Springs. It's dog friendly which our pup Penny loved with plenty of outdoor seating in a communal area with fire pits. Our room was simple but had character. We had a big king size bed, the mattress was a little soft for my liking but that's a matter of preference. The room had a fireplace, some rustic accents and the bathroom Spanish tiles with a stand up shower with good water pressure. Lastly there was a heated pool with plenty of seating connected to an indoor/outdoor bar restaurant called Norman (bates) which was perfect for sunset. The food at Norman was simple yet super tasty and at a good price point. Our server had a great attitude and was super knowledgeable. The burger was the jam and they even make the pickles in house, seriously... I'm talking about the pickles a week later. Lastly they had a complimentary breakfast which definitely helped alleviate some of the um.... tasting of wines. We definitely plan on more visits, easily worth the drive from LA. read more

Just not what I thought I'd get for the price. My husband and I went for our 10 year anniversary and first time leaving the kids at home. I opted for the more expensive room since it was a special occasion. While the rooms were cute and the views were awesome, I had a list of things that just didn't make it worth the money. First of all there is no fridge in the room which I thought totally odd. The continental breakfast was a complete joke...a small bowl of cold oatmeal. And it was the same both days. There was a reservation for the pool (which I understand due to covid) but we weren't notified of this at checkin and we found out while trying to go to the pool. Our first night there we ate at Norman's which is the restaurant on site and we witnessed a mouse running across the floor under a table. When we told the waiter, he laughed. I won't be back especially with those prices and I probably won't recommend friends to go either. read more

Probably my favorite hotel in Los Alamos. Rooms are clean and walls aren't too thin, fairly quiet when we went. Pool is an awesome feature to have, especially in the summer after wine tasting! I would say the areas that maybe need a little help are the restaurant/bar. My husband got the chicken there and it's was like the tiniest piece for something like $35. Also the drinks could be better for the price. The ratio just seems off on them (a couple I got we're definitely too sweet). Also we ordered fries at the pool and they took like 45 minutes and they weren't busy. Tinier room issues were the outdoor shower had black widows living in it so we definitely avoided it. And as a heads up, vineyard views on the far side aren't really views, more like up close tree viewings?! But honestly, I've stayed in a few places in Los Alamos, and would probably stay here when we go back again. It's not "in town", but worth the short little car trip. read more

I have passed by the Skyview motel many times and have always dreamed of staying here. Finally someone bought it and did such a beautiful job making it what it is now. This place exceeded my expectations. The room was really sweet and well decorated, and as a window covering specialist I have to say nice shades! Totally unique and nice, not a bunch of cheap crap. The mini bar was awesome. The staff were very friendly and most importantly the pool was so awesome! We went for my husbands birthday weekend during Covid and everything felt safe. The pool is on point and they serve you drinks and food. I felt like I was somewhere really fancy. Let me preface this by saying I am not a motel girl by any means. I love hotels and all the amenities that come along with it. So when I stumbled upon this "motel" I was a little hesitant to book it. This lasted all of 5 seconds until I saw the photos. I knew that this was not your average motel. This was by far one of the cutest places I could have ever picked. When you walk in you are greeted by the cutest little room. While it is tiny it is filled with nothing but charm. The colors, the bed, the bathroom all add an adorable touch to a cute little find. This is the type of motel you would look to find in a place like Palm Springs. It is old school with all these adorable modern touches. We stayed over Christmas so all the restaurants around us were closed so we decided to eat at the hotel. This was the one reason that I didn't give this motel 5 stars. The Skyview Motel is a chic and cozy place to stay for a long weekend in wine country. Beautifully appointed and centrally located, we couldn't have asked for a better oasis. The atmosphere was quiet, the room was stylish, and the bed was very comfortable. Our one complaint was that when we arrived we found rips and stains in the bedding. However, after we brought this to the receptionist's attention, he quickly made sure the bedding was changed and in good order. We definitely plan to return! read more
