First, it was a 45 min wait on a Thursday morning, granted it was spring break, so I can't fault them there. After getting seated, we got the pandan seasonal and a buttermilk, and while my 3yr old had fun, the resulting pancakes were just so thin and bland, that it honestly felt like we were eating thin wonder bread soaked in syrup. The floors were also not cleaned. I later realized there was an entire spilled cup of water under the table on the floor that they didn't clean up in between. At most tables you will find a grill flat top, you can cook your own pancakes with many topping options, our son had a great time, you can also choose from a variety of breakfast items. We tried the huevos rancheros with chorizo, eggs Benedict with potatoes, the food tastes great and it was served very quickly even though they were very busy! My daughter wanted to go to Slappy Cakes for her birthday. We got there and the gal said it'll be about a 45 minute wait. As I looked around the restaurant, the whole back side of it was open and I asked if we could sit there. She said, "we're not seating anyone back there because we have one server". Then we will wait since that's what our girl wanted for her special day. They took my phone number and said they would text us when they're ready so we waited outside. We waited and waited and waited. Guests came in and filtered out and we still weren't getting seated. Then after an hour of waiting, we checked back in and there was numerous tables open and a family sitting in the back of the restaurant where we were told they weren't allowing people to dine. I asked the girl who checked us in as to why we haven't received notification to dine yet and she said, "we're closed now. " Ahhh so you had us waiting for an hour for nothing? I saw a man behind the counter and went to him and asked him if he was the owner or management and he said "yes". I gave him a breakdown of what happened and he said, "nothing we can do about it now". I told him that, "if there was transparency that there wouldn't be time to seat us before they closed (an hour before) we would've been happy to leave then, instead of waiting an hour. Not only that, why was the other family able to sit when we were denied to sit there AND there was still room in the back AND in the rest of the restaurant?" The guy proceeded to argue with me about it and I told him that this was no way to run a business. It was totally unprofessional and honestly felt like maybe we weren't allowed to dine there due to discrimination towards my family. Why else would others be able to seat anywhere in the restaurant but we weren't and allowing others to come in to be seated and eat, yet we weren't. When they told us they were closed after waiting for that hour, there was still a lot of people in there. Such a disappointment and very poor service and ethics. Especially, for my daughter's "special day" to be treated so crappy by the owner. Wasted our time and gas driving all the way there just for an horrible experience by the owner and staff. read more

It's been years since we've been here and our kids don't even remember it, so we decided to visit. Came for brunch on a Sunday. We had a roughly 20 minute wait. Staff were friendly. We ordered a couple buttermilk and one seasonal (apple) batters, along with some tasty toppings. We also tried out one of the breakfast plates - I really liked the breakfast potatoes, which had a great seasoning. Prices are pretty high for the amount that you get, but we did enjoy everything. We noticed that the restaurant could benefit from some dusting (the rafters & light cords were caked in dust & cobwebs). TLDR: Its fun to try at least once especially with kids old enough to make their own pancakes. Come early, expect a wait otherwise and to shell out more $ than it's worth, mediocre service, OK food, and being rushed out. Ok so I knew I was paying for the experience of making my own pancakes and expected a mark up on most things but wow, $10 for a small bottle of batter and toppings for $2/$3/$4 with minuscule amount is just a little much to process. Adding onto that, aside from the lovely and friendly hostess, we didn't have that best customer service experience and left feeling rushed. We specifically came right around opening time a little after 8am on Saturday since I knew it would get very busy. The hostess was nice and seated us right away (but I did notice there are kids books at the waiting area which is a nice touch!) It's not a huge place so there were already quite a few tables filled up with diners. We have never been here and when we asked the waitress the best way to order she seems annoyed. We got drip coffee and the seasonable cold brew. We also got the weekend Three Meat special which came with toasts and potatoes, and a good amount to share. Like I said the batter was way overpriced and the two $4 toppings we got, blueberries and strawberries came in embarrassingly tiny gravy boats. If you wanted to mix and match your batter with other flavors, be ready to spend $20-30 just for the batter itself without toppings. Maybe about 35 minutes in, the bill was dropped at the table. I understand that this is a busy time but we were not even done with our batter yet! Like I said, this is a fun experience to try at least once with kids, but be prepared for things to add up quickly and less than ideal service. read more

Not only did the one bottle or pancake batter last us around 6 pancakes worth, it was also a blast to make different designs. We've been to Slappy Cakes many times and usually have a great experience -- it's one of our go-to spots in Portland for a fun, relaxed breakfast. Unfortunately, this visit felt very different from our usual experiences. The griddle at our table was sticky, which made it difficult to cook the pancakes properly and took away from the interactive experience that makes this place special. We also ordered a $31 bottle of champagne for mimosas, but were surprised to be charged an additional $5 for cranberry juice. That wasn't communicated clearly, and it felt unexpected given the price of the bottle. The biggest issue came at checkout. When I paid, the server accidentally charged my credit card for another table's bill as well. She did tell me right away and said it would be a temporary hold, but understandably that made me anxious and uncomfortable. Overall, the restaurant just felt a bit disorganized this morning. Even small things -- like noticing toilet paper near the food area while walking to the bathroom -- added to the feeling that things weren't quite running smoothly. I want to emphasize that we usually love Slappy Cakes and have consistently had great service and fun experiences here. That's why this visit stood out. We have been several times and every time they staff checks in on you - empty water and coffee mugs for over 15 min at one point my wife just got up and grabbed the water pitcher because our toddlers were complaining about being thirsty. Our toddler loved putting sprinkles in the pancakes, and the staff were cool about the mess he made which was super nice. We've been wanting to try this place for a while however one of our daughters is severely allergic to Eggs so we hadn't come here before. I noticed that the new owners added a Vegan batter so we finally came to try it out. It did not disappoint! The kids loved being able to make their own pancakes. And choosing their own toppings. Is this place a little overpriced compared to doing it at home? Sure, but it's worth it. I hope they expand their vegan flavors and colors so they can make more designs though, all the tables around us were getting chocolate as well to add to their designs but we only could choose the one, but we are not complaining since it was so good anyway. That being said we were still seated within 30-40minutes, which is definitely not the longest I've had to wait for a Sunday Brunch. Definitely a fun and unique spot for Brunch. The idea of being able to make your own pancakes is a fun and interactive idea that translates super well. We had their seasonal flavor (Red Velvet Cherry) which was good, but I couldn't really taste cherry.
