I'm not really sure what the deal is with this place. I've been there a few times because I live within walking distance. Every time I go, there's not very many plants to choose from at all which is pretty disappointing and odd. There's also rarely anyone to help you with questions. The only person I've encountered there on a weekend doesn't speak any English so I can't really get answers to anything. He just says yes to everything? Today I stopped in and there were boxes or records filing the inside of the store (versus plants). I took a look at a few and was then told they aren't for sale. So weird. It's a shame as it's such a prime location. Has anyone else been there and had a different experience? I go to the Great Outdoors as the selection is amazing and staff are super helpful. read more

This little square of land is lovely, but the selection is poor, the plants are overpriced, and the staff (there may only be one man?) is outright rude. I'd suggest visiting "The Great Outdoors" instead, as they are also local, have more knowledgeable (and friendly!) staff, and a much broader array of plants to peruse. read more

Absolutely adorable little nursery in clarksville... nestled in amongst the quiet restaurants and shops of west lynn. They've been there for decades, and while they aren't in my hood, I still make a point of strolling through to peruse their inventory. Grasses, vines, trees, herbs, veggies... everything you'd expect in a well stocked medium sized neighborhood nursery. Beautiful old building, with fantastic vibes - the green just undulates with the wind - sending off subliminal 'buy me and stick me in the ground' waves. Your plants are thirsty, get some compost tea here and let them drink. All that grass and dirt in your yard is boring, dig it up and slip in something beautiful. They have the best display of children's gardening gloves! It is amazing- they have gloves for little helpers and some for medium bigger helper and some for a bit bigger helper. Such fun to "fit" gloves with our helpers! read more

Where to start- they carry plants that are not for the area (azaleas, camellia's, other acid loving plants etc). and if you can find anyone to help, they seem to be "bothered". Oh, did I mention the price tag? They are super proud of their plants. The only previous comment I can agree with--- it is a joy to wander thru and look at the plants, but which nursery isn't? I went to Sledd Nursery for the 1st time this weekend with a friend. Right off the bat I have to give major props to the gardener there named Javier. Javier was eagerly explaining to us about plants when I stepped back smack onto a flat of begonias and crushed them with my wedge sandal. He pretended not to notice. Then later on I discovered a patch of purple flowers that had the most amazing scent. I would close my eyes and inhale their gorgeous perfume and make a big deal about how good they smelled. I kept coming back a couple more times during my visit to get another sniff. Javier came over after seeing this and took a whiff of them then looked at me with complete compassion and honesty and said, "These flowers are actually unscented. I believe what you are smelling are over here, " and with this he gestured at another set of flowers a few feet away. Oh. For such a small nursery this place is very well stocked. They have everything from flowers to vegetables to cactus. The prices seem a bit high but the quality of the plant is top notch and you can't beat the variety. I ended up purchasing a very gorgeous bougainvillea for my front porch. I would have no clue how to spell the name of this plant but one of the owners very kindly wrote the name down for me after I kept repeating the name over and over again in a confused fashion in an attempt to memorize it. 'Twas the day before Christmas and all through the house not a gift for my mother-not even an....ounce. I'm not a poet nor a songwriter so I'll stop there. Not sure where to begin to brag about this hidden gem's high quality of products and service. It truly blew my mind how smoothly it all went. My experience was remarkable from the beginning. I initially called to ensure the hours (as it was Christmas Eve) and the owner's son said I was welcome to stop by whilehe finished watering to do. This unnecessary gesture that he went out of his way to accommodate me is something I place high value in and makes me want to support a store such as this even more. In addition to the wonderful service (did I mention DELIVERY?!?!) I received. My mother and I could not be happier with the purchase of the schfellera tree. It really makes an apartment feel more like home! I definitely recommend! read more

I visited Sledd's for the first time this afternoon with my family. They had a nice selection of plants for decent prices, and the main selling point was the service. The guy helping us really went above and beyond -- he was extremely helpful and offered great service. Don't let his stoic demeanor fool you, he was a really nice guy! Plus it's housed in what seems to be an old gas station and has a really cool atmosphere overall. read more

I would give zero stars if possible. The employee here (possibly the owner) was rude and ungracious. My son was trying to entertain his younger cousin with some of the toys they have sitting out and she barked at him that he was too big to play with the toys. He didn't hear exactly what she said and before he could even respond, she yelled at him. We had barely arrived and we swiftly walked out with no intention to ever shop there again. Don't put toys out, if you don't want kids to touch them or play with them. read more

Sledd's Nursery is hands-down the best nursery in Austin, for multiple reasons. It's a family-run business that has been thriving on the same corner for 30+ years. When I was in high school, I worked at the mom and pop grocery store next to it, and I'd frequently walk over to Sledd's after my shift was done to buy my mom a gift on Mother's Day, etc, etc. I still live in the neighborhood to this day, and, over my many years in Austin, I have come to love it as a staple of the community. The owner knows where to to buy the best plants, and she knows how to keep them throughout the summer and winter months. She, and the other employees, always have good advice when it comes to plant care, disease, bugs, etc. They even make and sell their own compost tea!! When I walk the nursery grounds, I feel peaceful and serene; I'm reminded of what old Austin used to feel like. If you are looking for a corporate place that sells plant-mill seedlings and disgruntled employees hiding from customers behind large stacks of fertilizer, then Sledd's is not the right place for you. If you want an eclectic and authentic experience in a place where you can find the house plant that fits your vibe and deal with employees whose entire life is dedicated to the beauty of nature, then by all means Sledd's is definitely the place for you. read more

Did I just wander through a secret garden filled with fairy-folk and mystery alike, then wander back out on my lunch break feeling that all was well with the world? Did nirvana strike me while my boots crunched through pebbles and I gazed at moss covered monkey fixtures hanging from a ceiling with slits of sunlight striking through and highlighting the viney growth around me? Is this even within the city limits? Is this something out of Pan's Labyrinth? Are those roses growing on the bushes in the front larger than my head? Yes, maybe, and not quite, but certainly possible with a little rain. I called about a specific tree. He was very helpful on the phone telling me what he had in stock. Then I told him I found the same size tree about $40 cheaper on the other side of town. He ended his call as a smart ass saying "enjoy your treat cheep tree" then hung up. read more

I love Sledd nursery. The people are great and so are the plants.

I go to Sledd Nursery several times a week. It is a great, medium sized, but well stocked nursery on 12th and West Lynn in an old converted gas station. They have a wide variety of plants, shrubs, trees, vegetable transplants, flowers, as well as soil, mulch, compost tea and seeds. They carry the Rabbit Hill Farm products which I love, as well as a couple brands of worm castings. The parking is easy and they always load up my car, using care to put down cardboard or newspaper to keep my none-tidy car tidy. They are very knowledgeable about everything a nursery should be knowledgeable about. And it doesn't suck to shop for plants and seeds with the smells of Nau's burgers wafting across the street. read more

I'm so thankful to have such a stunning nursery in the center of Austin. They have the perfect plants for every season: chrysanthemums in the fall, cyclamen in the winter (as well as the best Christmas poinsettias), and for spring and summer, well, everything you can imagine (plumbagos and butterfly weed and bougainvillea, oh my!!). The owner always has a well-stocked variety of indoor plants to choose from: fig trees, rubber plants, pothos, and things I don't even know the name of. I can't forget to mention the great selection of trees for those of you with large lawns or ranches...and they even offer a delivery and planting service. If you have any questions about the best organic pest control or how to ward off mosquitoes in the most natural and human way--the excellent and attentive staff are happy to chat with you about all things Central Texas gardening! read more

The people here are very friendly, but not very knowledgeable, at least in my experience. I guess I can forgive that--I appreciate friendliness. The plants, however, are probably the highest priced plants of any nursery in Austin and I'm really not sure why. I think it is either high rent or the fact that they stock a large number of Monrovia plants in the garden center, which are expensive plants even to nurseries at cost. Everything looks good--and should, at that price--but can be found cheaper at any of the other very good, independent, and local nurseries in town. read more

Don't bother going here if you are mostly doing a native and adapted plant garden that being said this nursery for being so small has a nice atmosphere. It is a bit pricey, though. I'm still planning a another trip here sometime because it is worth the occasional look. read more

I love Sledd's nursery. As a clarksville local (clarksvillain...?) I walk by Sledd's all the time. I finally stopped in the other day because I decided my black thumb could probably handle a succulent garden. Their selection was amazing. I was so inspired! I went by after work and they were closing but stuck around to help me. As a former retail employee I know how annoying it can be when someone walks in right at the end of your work day, but they were pretty nice about it. They also gave me tips on how to care for my new friends. I try to patronize my neighborhood whenever I can -- so I will definitely be popping in again. It is on the expensive side, but they have some pretty unique botanicals and great customer service. Check it out! read more

Yesterday I came in with my 2 yr old son looking for crawling rosemary (one of my plants died when it was installed by landscapers and I wanted it to match my other existing plants). I talked to the woman that worked there and she assured me the plant they were showing me was in fact crawling rosemary. I am no plant expert but I told her I think these plants look a bit different. She said to go ahead a buy it and compare and if it doesn't match to bring it back (this seemed reasonable). I bought the plant went home to compare and it didn't match. I sent my husband and my son to return it this morning. Apparently they encountered another older male (likely the owner mentioned in all the negative reviews). He proceeded to yell at my husband in front of my two year old son that "there are no returns" and that "we just bought the plant for a photo shoot" and "no one will want it". I assure you the plant was in its original condition (we had it for less than 24hrs on our patio), and it was never used in a photo shoot (a reaction I found bizarre). After being screamed at, my husband left the plant in the owners care and left the shop quickly to stop my son from witnessing anything further, even though no refund was processed. We are both appalled by the way my husband was treated and do not understand how a business with such horrible customer service could still be open. We will not ever come back. read more

I just shopped Sledd's again today for some plant food and compost for my yard. Received advice on what to buy and how to apply for best results. I also updated them on 4 trees they planted for us last year (3 different types of oak trees and a pear tree). All 4 are doing great and we are looking forward to see how they continue to grow this spring. I have probably shopped at Sledd's 15 or so times over the years. I have never had the negative experience reported in some of the older yelp posts. I have ALWAYS found the Sledd employees to be helpful, knowledgeable -- and not all pushy. And while the prices may be higher in general than the chain stores, it does feel great to save gas while supporting a very local business. read more

A family run local buisness, Sledds is one of the oldest plant nurseries in Austin. Located off of West Lynn street I always makes point of walking through and seeing what new plants they have. They have a good selection of roses and indoor plants, as well as vegetables and herbs, even gardening tools and fertilizers. The staff is always friendly and knowledgable. I was looking for blue bonnets across town and they made of point of calling me to let me know when they had some. After buying several big bags of soil two employees helped my load up my car! Great part of Austin and a fun place to bring a friend visiting. read more

I was trying to match a variety of azelea that I purchased at another nursery in Westlake, and could only find it at Sledd. Good so far huh? Well they were selling 2 gal. sizes with half the top growth for $8 more than the other nursery's 3 gal. I asked why and was told "overhead". You decide. read more

I love Sledd Nursery in Clarksville - I'm partial because I live close by and walk past it a lot. It adds so much to the neighborhood and the folks who work there are super nice and very helpful. You may pay a little more but the plants live and they show you the best ways to keep them healthy so there's no returning them or getting home to find your cactus flower was hot-glued on like from HomeDepot! The small succulents make great gifts too! read more

I am a very difficult person to disappoint. I have never had a more bizarre experience with a store. I was trying to buy an entire collection of books ( $150 set) I was told they were $2 a book but then told they weren't for sale, yet they were on the sale rack. I then knew something was up when all the employees refused to sell anything to me (or my family). I should have called the police because I was getting refused service but I didn't. I truly think the owner is crazy because I have been in there before and bought lots of plants. No idea why I was refused service but I definitely will not be returning. So wrong. I am a long time and experienced gardener. I have visited pretty much every nursery in north and central Texas. I give Sledd a so-so recommendation. They have great looking nursery stock and nice variety for such a small place if you are not looking for native or xeriscape. The plants are very healthy and I have had good success finding what I want here. The big negative for me is that the manager of the place always puts a hard sell on me to buy items that I don't want if they don't have the specific plant I'm looking for. He is a bit of a "know it all" and tries to parlay his knowledge into sales of gimmicky and expensive plant foods and soil amendments that are just not worth the price. Check out is a little clumsy and if he is at the store it is impossible to purchase your items and make it back to your car without him following you around or to the parking lot trying to make another sale. read more
