Ooooh this place is pretty sick and I'm glad I got to stop in. Friends warned me that it does not look like a bar or venue at all from the outside but once you get inside that all changes. My positive experience started at the door with some of the nicest bouncers I've ever dealt with and the line being pretty organized and civil. It was raining outside so I was even more impressed by all of it. Had my first Chicago Handshake upon entering and was ready to say goodbye but stuck it out. The music was great and I really liked the fact that they have a ton of outdoor space and an expansive menu that was projected onto the wall so you could see everything at any time. I must say that Billy Helmkamp, the manager of Sleeping Village is a gem. I went to see Jessica Hernandez and the Deltas at this great venue with terrific staff and great tap beer. The staff were most generous and friendly. We ran into a little problem and Mr. Helmkamp resolved it quickly and amicably. I cannot say enough about this great facility to watch music. Awesome. Came here to see Jaboukie last night and it was a pretty decent spot! Super hipster vibe- dark rimmed glasses, beanies, bad haircuts etc lol just an overall low key spot but the bartender was really cool and let me try a few of the different ciders before I decided on the Batch #6, which was sweet, refreshing and had a great apple juice taste to it. I also got a taste of the Mosa, which was like a beer mimosa. The Rosé cider was good too! Friendly staff, great drink selection, chill ambiance. Two thumbs up! read more

We are new to the neighborhood and this quickly became our favorite spot after one visit. I actually love how deceiving the outdoor facade is. It looks like an HVAC business or something but the inside is completely renovated and so clean & modern. Lots of plants and nice quaint features to give off a really great vibe. Perfect canvas for your day/night. The beer list is massive and always changing. They even have Mead & Kombucha. They don't serve food but you can order for delivery (DiVita's Pizza across the street has great thin crust & salad). They have a great outdoor patio & a lot of seating. Great for groups. They have a lot of shows here but we haven't gone to one yet. Definitely worth checking Sleeping Village out if you are a fan of beer. Bartenders are skilled masters of avoiding eye contact at all costs. I can understand waiting 20-30 mins at a packed bar for a drink and I am happy to do so, IF a bartender at least acknowledges you after about 15 mins of standing directly in front of them at an opening at the bar. There were 3 bartenders, people 4 rows deep waiting for drinks, and what appeared to be a very inefficient POS system. Add to that a bunch of multi-ingredient cocktail orders and you've got kind of a hot mess. I liked the soul music records they were playing in the main bar. The back room / music venue was cool. If they iron out the kinks and encourage their bartenders to show any modicum of hospitality, this place could be great. I'll be back in a few months to see what's up. read more

The exterior is super deceiving. Looks like an old machining shop from the 50's. My wife joked that "hey let's go to that place; I'm sleepy;" when we pulled up. When I told her, actually, that's where we are going, she didn't believe me until we walked in. Much to her disappointment, this was not a place of tranquil relaxation and slumber. Inside, it has the vibe of a retro bowling alley lounge, meets modern craft beer tap room, with a little hint of tiny country dance hall. There was a DJ playing some tunes underneath the projected beer menu. They have a load of taps at the bar, but it only looks like a quarter are being utilized now. The outside patio is very sparse with some fine gravel floor about 4 to 5 picnic tables and strung up lights; I get wanting to have open mingling space, but it feels like they could have brought a little more charm, color, and life to this outdoor space. Overall; service was good, the drink selection was great and well organized (very beer dominant, which I'm okay with). I applaud them for the originality of the space and for supporting music to go along with beer. Btw...finding parking is not horrible, but this is a place you should walk, ride, or cab to, so you can sit and have a few. The space is very well suited to groups getting together. read more

Sleeping Village from the very brief experience I had with it was a overall pretty solid place. The atmosphere of it was nice it was a cozy warm environment. I can only speak to the bar side of it because I didn't have the opportunity to catch any of their shows/performances that they host however from what people had told me it was a great time for those that did get to experience it. The only negative I have about the place, and it is mentioned in other reviews, is the parking. If you are driving I suggest getting there before you want to be there to find yourself some parking. The surrounding area is filled with one way streets that have little to no space for parking if you are fortunate enough to come across it and parking in the back or in front of the place offers a small selection of availability. Aside from that the place is very nice and would 100% recommend stopping by for a drink and show. read more

This venue has some cool moments, like the black light stamps so you're not walking around with a black ink stamp or sharpie lines on your hand for the next couple of days. And the beer selection is pretty nifty, if you're into that sort of thing. But omg, the first band nearly exploded my ear drums. Why so loud?! it's a tiny venue. When the back of the room feels like I am standing in front of the speaker, I am very unhappy. It was better for the other two bands, but I was so appalled by the sound of the first one that I think the ringing in my ear killed the rest of the night for me a little bit. The bands were fine. It wasn't their fault. The crowd was nice and varied. But yeah. This place is too small for so much noise. read more

I came here when they had been opened for only about 3 weeks. I love how clean and minimalist the interior is. And while their specialty is in beer and cider, they had a few cocktails on hand for those of us who prefer spirits. Atmosphere was very good. Let's hope they work out some of the kinks in their service. I went to see Jessica Pratt at the Sleeping Lounge. I really liked the venue. They had an out door patio, family style seating, and a full bar that had just as many amazing coffee drinks as it did regular drinks. A few issues - It was super warm. We had to leave the concert early because Neither my friend or I could stay in the venue. There is little to no seating. A few seats by the bar. I'm short, standing room only meant a lot of people in front of me I couldn't see over. To be fair - the standing room part is a common practice in smaller venues. The last item was the door - Jessica Pratt is a more subtle artist. The door was loud each time it was opened. It made a huge creaking and slamming noise each time, which was frequent. The staff was kind, the venue was nice, tickets were reasonably priced. If the temp and the door could be addressed (easy fixes I think) - I would honestly up my star rating for Sleeping Village. read more

Went to SV last night for the Halloween concert featuring the "ladies of LCD Soundsystem" dj set..I was pleasantly surprised by the intimate yet spacious dance floor/concert pit- great soundsystem & decent lights, positive vibes, queer friendly yet mixed crowd of younger and yet not 18 year olds, best of both worlds as in ...when you want a dive bar feel yet prefer good beer and clean surroundings lol (they still have $3 hamms beer if you want!) great outdoor patio amazing beer selection. All around great experience will DEFINITELY be back for concert events and during the day with the pup for some beer !! read more

I love this place! After a couple of visits, figured I would review. This place might look like an old folks home from the outside but inside is so modern! And the beer list is phenomenal. They project the beers onto the wall with prices ($7-8) and have a lot of great craft beers, especially local. The place is huge. Not only is there the main bar inside with booths to sit at, but there is a beautiful patio with picnic tables, and a stage in the back for shows/DJ nights. I love the vibe here, everyone is chill. Laid back. Only thing is they don't have food, but frequently have a pop up on the patio. That food is pretty pricey. Last night I paid $5 for one taco. And this was just a tortilla and meat. Another night it was $5 for an elote so be aware. read more

SO excited to have a bar that's not Alices or late bar (love em but you can't just sit and have a few beers without somehow finding yourself wasted at 5 am buying 7-11 pizza). The interior is absolutely gorgeous, literally what I want my house to look like. Avondale Rising in a Sleepy Village!! I have lived in Avondale for about 4 years now and it has been rapidly evolving and gentrifying. Some positive and some negative changes. When the team from The Whistler open a new project a couple blocks away from your home.... this can only be positive. I heard about this bar a while back, but was out of town the last couple months when it moved into the final phases. Luckily for me, I parked nearby and was able to stumble into a soft opening tonight. My first impression was that this place feels like a hipster take on a blue collar pub (in a good way). Great beer selection including cider, wine, and Meade. A very simplified cocktail selection, which is an intentional departure from The Whistler I gather. The bar is retrofitted inside an old factory and feels very unassuming. It blends perfectly into this quiet neighborhood, and will give me more pull to bring friends up to Avondale! I expect to never again get a song in at the already popular Alice's down the street, but maybe that's for the best ;) Sleeping Village has a nice big patio, where I look forward to grabbing sun and beer when the frost melts away :) read more

Very cool vibe that makes me look forward to warmer weather when the patio will be fun to hang out on. I went here with some friends for the Khruangbin DJ set. The front space is clean and open and they have some really great beers (specifically sours) on draft. We hung in the front room for a bit until the set started. It is large enough to host thirsty crowds waiting for a good show. The actual show space was intimate but with an opportunity to get out of the crowd and hang. The bar in the show space has exclusively canned beers and to my delight, $3 dollar cans of Hamm's and $2 La Croixs. I am planning on seeing a show here again in January as part of the TNK series and I'm looking forward to going back read more

I love this place! So happy that they have the patio open again (as of a week or so ago) and are allowing pups. My partner and I live very close to SV, and it's our favorite neighborhood bar/workplace pre-covid. This place is wonderful, super laptop-friendly inside and they served coffee, cold brew on draft, tea, etc. At night, it's an awesome place for a beer, cider, or anything else your heart may desire! I've only been here to see a couple of shows, but I can't wait for it to fully reopen and see more local artists. This place feels like the "coolest" place in Avondale, and is definitely worth a visit! read more

I am an international student in Chicago and came to celebrate my friends birthday; So, we planned to go to this bar. I had an identification that The united States gave me in order to drive and identify myself, except for travel, get a bank account, or government related. So, as always, I showed this identification, because my age and expiration date is stated there. The security girl checked my identification, but since my ID wasn't familiar to her, she called the manager. She decided that I wasn't going to be able to enter to the bar. I would have understood that I needed to bring my passport (which that never happens because I always use this ID everywhere), but she addressed me in a very indifferent way making me feel that I was not accepted in that place. Then, the manager came and he stood behind her to demonstrate that they were waiting for me to leave without saying anything else. I was always respectful and I wasn't looking for confrontation; however, I felt that they treated me as someone as I was about to do something bad. I felt very uncomfortable on the way how they treated me and I feel that the person in charge on this bar needs to hire employees that takes care of their customers and reputation. Every person should be treated with empathy since they are public employees. This is the first time that I write a review but I needed to say something about this incident. I would like to hear a response from whoever is in charge. read more

I've gone here for a couple of shows now and I really like the venue. The cocktails are fantastic and there's ample space to hang out, especially in the summer when they open up the back patio. The acoustics were perfect for the shows I've seen, and sometimes they even do events on the back patio when the weather is nice. A very community-oriented music venue. You love to see it. read more
