I was surprised when I popped in on a Friday night and they actually had a beer on special! Weekend drink specials are rare! $4 for Two Brother's Domaine DuPage, I'm game. They had a lot of good beers on draft - FFF Zombie Dust, Paid Time Off! by 3 Sheeps Brewing, Milk Stout Nitro by Left Hand Brewing, and a bunch more. I was impressed with their on tap selection but they had an even more extensive bottle collection. If you want to hipster out, they have PBR as well. They have a whole page of beer cocktails which are pretty cool, as well as normal cocktails. We got a couple shots of Jamo while there, too! Prices weren't bad either, 2 beers and 2 shots ran us $18 for a round. Bartenders were friendly and knew their stuff. The Double is a chill, laid-back option for some drinks at acceptable prices. They have a colorful Chicago history that is worth reminding them to retell! Dark, yet inviting. Top shelf yet blue collar affordable. Hip yet normal. I've walked past this bar countless times, but only made it there for the first time about a week ago. This bar is located on a part of Fullerton that does not have a huge nightlife scene, but has a few other places nearby. This bar has a decent amount of seating for the size. We came on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving and there was a good crowd. I loved the throwback music and chill vibe. Our server was funny. He also gave great suggestions for cocktails. This bar specializes in beer cocktails. They take craft beers and mix them with spirits such as whiskey, gin, Liqueur's, etc. They really do an excellent job with creating delicious tasting cocktails at a fair Chicago price. Regular and beer cocktails typically range from about $8-$14 each. read more

Seems like Logan Square is getting all the good spots now! A buddy of mine decided to have a bday celebration here on a semi frosty Saturday nite. I walked in to some nice hip hop joints which At first I didn't think it went with the nice, dim and intimate interior. I was wrong as they were playing some smooth joints from Mos Def, Talib Kweli, Gang Starr, A Tribe Called Quest, etc... The beer list is awesome and they even have La Fin Du Monde on tap which you dont see all the time. The peeps that work behind the bar are awesome and know their stuff when it comes to beer. They also have a dog that hangs behind the bar which I think belongs to the owner. Definitely a great spot to check out when dwelling in the square. I ate before I got there so I wasn't hungry, but the wings smelled really good. The Double is just a block down from the Burlington, and about three blocks from the Whirlaway Lounge. The Double's layout can serve for two purposes: either on a date, or a night with the boys. The back end of the bar is chic and intimate as chair level seating allows you to watch the rest of the bar or focus on the date your with [make-out session]. Henry usually has the three flat screens on with an evening sporting event. To mix it up you'll find cartoon network or movies like No Country For Old Men playing. The tv's are almost always muted unless its a Bears game. There is a jukebox filled with your classics, otherwise the bar cycles good music within a custom playlist- Kid Cudi to Alice in Chains..... If you like Beer- The Double has great taps on hand and larger (unique craft-brews) bottles for share. I've drank everything from an Old Fashioned to a dirty Goosetini, but Henry's capabilities as a mixologist is always able to fancy something anew. Things like Absinth, or bacon marinaded Makers Mark can make for tasty gulps. A few negatives come to light as there is no food on the menu. When it gets busy you may be waiting a few minutes for your next or first cocktail. Two motorcycle club/bars are down the block and across the street. Bathrooms are clean and quant but are single serving sized. Ca$h is King as an ATM can feed you currency at a $3dollar charge. Yes, Henry holds down the fort almost 6-nights out of the week. Yes, he resembles a soft spoken Easy E, but as others have noted he is a genuine, classic-style barkeep that is unpretentious who naturally oozes class in a neighborhood that needs his style. read more

Mostly like this place is a great social network enviroment - Henry is a great Bartender - and would recommend to try the drink list on the Menu. I have tried most of them and boy they are Greeeeeaatt!! Try the Purple Moon - Highly recommend it! If you don't love a bar that has an awesome house pooch then you're either A) Allergic or B) A terrible human being. I'm gonna go ahead and claim that The Double might have one the best damn bar dogs in the entire city. He's some sort of pure bred mastiff and has the perfect personality to roam around the bar as if he were a paid employee. His owner (who also owns the bar) is equally personable and the pair completely make this place what it is...A friendly neighborhood watering hole. I don't exactly recall the drink selection, and can't really say that there was much else that stood out, but when you remember the bartender saying "If you get one come back and we'll talk pups" you know you're in the right spot. read more

The owner has the cutest little gray puppy, you know, the dopey, awkward kind with paws too big for its body. It just sort of hangs out in the bar and you can pet it if you're not a drunk, screaming d-bag or some wasted girl with mommy issues who wants to hold it like a baby for 3 hours. Five stars for really nice people. Four stars for Sofie and Matilda on the menu, but none left in the cooler on a Saturday night :(. Five stars for the nice atmosphere and tons of space to get cozy and the fact that the kids in those stupid slatted plastic Kanye West glasses apparently can't see well enough to get in the doors. If I drank with greater frequency, I would go more often, but when I do choose to imbibe, it's my go to spot. I don't know anywhere else in Logan Square where I can hear Radiohead, Deftones, and Jay Electronica all in one sitting, or where I can fawn over the CUTEST.PUPPY. EVER. I've always felt extremely welcome by Henry and his wife. They're cool peeps who do a great job of setting a laid back atmosphere, whilst serving excellent drinks and conversation. The decor is really nice, the bathrooms are clean, and overall it's a much welcome alternative to the dive bars lining Fullerton. And consistent with the statement on the back of the menu listing the random assortment of people who are all welcome (so long as they're paying), "Strippers, Burnouts, Democrats, Republicans, White Collar, No Collar," I can't imagine anyone really feeling out of place here. All of us freaks and geeks benefit from the intentionality of the owners in making the place accessible to everyone. Go forth and drink! At the Double! read more

I did not have a neighborhood bar before The Double, and I have not had one since. Henry is the man--lots of fun and good at making sure newbies and regular customers are taken care of. One of my all-time favorite memories at The Double was watching the Blackhawks win the Cup in 2013. The music is great and at a good volume to allow for conversation. It's cozy without feeling divey. It's a little off the path of obnoxious hipster bars so you don't have to deal with all that. I only live a few blocks away, so the location is perfect for me. Their offering of beer mixed with liquor is unique, and very lovely. I'd say go in just to try those out. Arrogant Bastard mixed with Johnny Walker Black? Yay! I'm a fan! The fact that it's a cash bar is DUMB, really. It's 2011 guys, get with the program. That's the only bad thing, though. Beer selection? Solid. Booze selection? Solid. Tenders? They actually asked me where I'd been earlier in the evening, and told me their names with an outstretched hand. What a nice addition to the neighborhood. Nicest tavern staff in all of Chicago: super accommodating, super friendly, and super speedy with the drinks and pub mixes. Clean bar and nice interior. The only thing that could make the atmosphere better is come summertime the owner gets a license to create an outdoor seating section on the east side of the building. Nice! This watering hole is a hop skip and smoke from my front door, so i had high exceptions for it as soon as the sign went up. The place that was there before was, well i'm not sure what it was bar or coffee shop lets just say i never found out. My first time in there was with a gaggle of already drunk hockey buddies who I play with on Friday afternoons (that's right we skate and drink while you count down the clock for the weekend). So we show up stinking like a old pair of easton gloves and Budweiser. We order a round of PBR's and the owners (husband and wife) come over and introduce themselves to us and chat it up without seeming that they are trying to hard to be "look at our new bar and please come back" they actually wanted to talk. We explain that we all live in the hood and am glad to have them here. Now I'm not saying my crew likes to drink, but we like to drink. This place never let our glass's get close to empty, when we thought we needed shots they were more then glad not to question our bad decisions but encourage them. As our crew grew by peeps and blood alcohol content they kept the same service going. Two weeks later go back for seconds after work with one of said hockey buddies, barkeep/owner does not recognize me at first. By second beer he states "you look different with the mustache". He is right i do. The Double has instantly become my new favorite spot. Great atmosphere, nice crowd, awesome drinks (you MUST have a purple moon). Did I mention Leroy is my new bestie--the sweetest pup you will meet. Also, there is a lot to be said about the decor and the atmosphere. Ambiance is very well maintained (yes, even with the televisions). Ample space and seating to come for an intimate date or with a group of friends. Warm chocolate tones, wood throughout, and the antiqued brass (I'm guessing?) ceiling all contribute to the very comfortable feel of The Double. Finally, great variety of music played via iPod, Laptop... There is something for everyone. Must visit if you're in Logan Square. read more

It was my third visit in this establishment. First two were great. Friendly bartenders, well done drinks, smiling faces. Unfortunately the last visit was completely different. Different barman. Different attitude, smaller drinks with almost no alcohol. $8 vodka shot??? Come on. It's not River North. It's west end of Logan Square, especially when you compare to $5-$6 drinks. A beer cocktail? I'm intrigued, impressed and thoroughly satisfied. I ordered the Lucy in the Sky - it was a delightful Allagash White based cocktail with a fresh lemon rind floating on top. Sound delicious? It was. I came with a gaggle of co-workers who were a little weary of the neighborhood, but they were all very impressed with both the bar and the neighborhood. Looooved this place. Went there on a Saturday night, and it wasn't overwhelmingly crowded like most in the 'hood. Henry, the owner, was soooo friendly and really funny, too. His wife was also there, who was sweet as pie. PUPPY BEHIND THE BAR. No, really. Mastiff puppy behind the bar. I almost died I was so excited. Also, I was a little tipsy so my excitement wasn't hidden very well. Solid place. Very unpretentious which I totally dig (I didn't feel like I was being judged by a bar full of people) (I easily could have been judged, as previously stated, I was pretty tipsy by the time I left) Awesome staff. Well hello, bar just down the street from me. I love you. They have a great selection of tasty beers, and possibly the most comfortable atmosphere I've experienced in a bar. The staff is A+, and is genuinely personable. I dropped in with my boyfriend at 10pm on a Wednesday night, and there were quite a few people there. Plus, the space is self is beautiful. It's great to see what happened with the old Hottie Biscotti space. I will definitely be going back. Only advice- Ditch the scented candles. The candlelight was great, but the smell was distracting. Plus, some people may have sensitivities to the fragrance (or flat out allergic- like I am). The smell was aggravating my allergies, but I stuck it out because I wanted to give the bar a chance and I love my beer. I blew out the candle at my table, which helped a bit, but could do without either way. read more

Love this place. Henry and Matt are so friendly and kind, and I love when Henry brings his dog! My friends and I have had many fun nights here together. The location is awesome, as our apartment is a 5 minute walk from here. I took 1 star off because why is it so dark?? Unless you're sitting at the bar or one of the tables behind it you can't even see your hand in front of your face. It kind of feels like drinking in a cave... This is a solid bar. I went for New Year's eve and met the owners. Very down to earth. Great approach to service and hospitality. Nice selection of beers. They had complimentary champagne at midnight and even gave my group a shot of their delicious gingerbread drink. This place doesn't take itself too seriously and it shows by listing stereotypes welcome. The seating areas range from the bar, to table tops to lounge sections. Their servers are hard-working and nice. A few things that will make this bar even nicer would be some solid DJs with great mashup skills. I can imagine some jazz on top of hip hop or some solid 80s nights with classic rock. I will definitely be bringing my friends here. read more

This is my new local dive bar. Despite it being a little too classy to be a dive bar. Not far from my house, the owner (who tends bar there all the time) is very friendly and talkative. He often brings is dog in there (a Mastif) that's very well behaved even when crazy drunk people are around him. The beer menu is very interesting. There's a lot of craft (fancy) beers I've never heard of but I always give them a try. The owner is pretty good at recommending stuff you will like. Give it a try. read more

My friend hosted her b-day drinks session there, and it was pretty good. Nice space, with decent drink specials. Low lighting make it a nice place for a date- it's a very flattering amount of light, especially when drinking. You look twice as romantic twiddling your straw and coyly smiling. Decent amount of seating, although some of it seems like it's in a weird arrangement. I felt like only a few of us were standing, which was good since it wasn't packed, but since one end was a couch, 5 of us had to sit in a line and it was difficult to talk. Maybe it's because I'm not in the neighborhood, but the location felt a little random. It was easy to reach by bus from elsewhere though. Also, I dig the floating shelves just hanging out. I especially love the tv inside the floating shelf. Look at you guys being super clever. I like it. Nice bartenders. read more
