We had an amazing time on our trail ride! The food was surprisingly delicious and the wine was average, but flowed freely and often! If you have had a bit of riding experience, they will pair you with a great horse and let you play a bit. If you're a newbie they will find a tamer horse for you. They let you practice first so if you are a first timer, it's a great place to start! They have a variety of trails, but I really liked the ones we took. Stunning prairies, woods and scenic views. Our leader was a legit country born and bred cowboy which gave the experience true authenticity. The place was kind of difficult to find and scheduling was a legit nightmare. That said, it was all worth it and I gave this place 5 stars anyway. The horses are well cared for and the staff is knowledgable. They truly care for these animals and the experience of their guests. If you are a first time rider I suggest you take as little as possible on the ride with you. Things fall out of pockets while riding and no one wants a broken phone, camera, whatever. I lost my sunglasses on the ride (our cowboy offered to retrieve them but I didn't want to hold up the group) so just be sure you don't take anything you aren't willing to lose. Bring cash for a tip (it's how the cowboys make their $$$!!!) and after the experience you've had, you will want to be generous! Beware the only facilities are a well kept and clean porta potty. If this freaks you out, stop at a gas station before you go and limit wine consumption! Definitely go during pleasant weather, bring bug spray, and enjoy your ride! PS there is also a winery nearby that the staff will be happy to refer you to afterwards. The wines are sweet (not my taste) and mediocre even by Texas standards, but it was a great way to end our day. The owner was nice and it was a fun experience! This ended up being a fun adventure when it was all said and done. I can't fault anyone for being on a horse that tried to decapitate me (twice) going into her stall. Or for wearing stupid shoes and losing one when my horse decided she wanted to trot and try to throw me off (that's what it seemed like anyway). I rode barefoot like a boss! Haha. But that horse was the boss of me and she let me know it many times. Near the end of the ride I was more comfortable with how to guide the horse and make her do things I wanted her to do. In the beginning I was really questioning why I was doing this. There were 7 of us girls and David was our guide. We stopped about an hour into the rides to have dinner, which was set up for us near a pond, complete with a couple of bottles of wine. It was nice to regroup and chill out for a bit. Woot, hadn't been horseback riding in a while and got a great deal to do it again at this place with my wife for our two-year anniversary. I was a tad worried I'd get used to it again right away and wondered if we'd just be let loose on our horses to fend for ourselves, but the guy in charge was very helpful and made sure we knew the ropes before we went out on our trail ride. The horses themselves were very tame and calm, but also stubborn when it comes to eating various shrubs and leaves on the trail. Our guide was helpful and probably patient concerning we moved at a snail's pace :) In the middle of our ride, we sat down for a picnic lunch by the lake. The chicken salad sandwiches on croissants and chips were very tasty, and the water and fruit kept it light. Still, not really a $30 meal in my opinion, which is what it cost. Overall, it was a fun little adventure and we'd definitely go back. My only suggestion would be to put a sign in front of the place, as we happened to find them by pure luck. read more

DO. NOT. BUY. MEAT. FROM. THESE. PEOPLE. I purchased a groupon for this company and ordered some lamb chop on June 3rd. I paid additional $44. to cover the shipping and remaining cost. Although on the group on page, it says shipping will be $10 but SSR charged me $28 for shipping. I understand the meat will take 3-4 weeks to arrive but while I am waiting, I received an paypal invoice of $12 on June 23rd from SSR, didn't specify what it's for. I ignored it since I have already paid full for my order 3 weeks ago. The invoice did not specify what the $12 for. I am glad I paid via paypal so they couldn't just charge my credit card. Guess what? Lamb chop suddenly arrived just now and it was shipped inside a foam box with NO ICE in it. I looked up the UPS tracking and it was shipped via UPS Ground on 24th and arrived 4 days later. It means my meat has been sitting inside this non-cooled box for 4 days. I am not sure if it was shipped frozen or not but it doesn't matter because it should have been shipped with dry ice packs. In their website, it says (http://www.ssrcountry.com/natural-meats): All our meats are shipped directly to you packed in dry ice packs and usually arrive via 1-day or 2-day UPS delivery! Like a few of the other reviewers, I purchased a Groupon for Sleepy Sheep Ranch lamb meat and it was a mistake. When trying to order, you are instructed to call them or email them (no E-commerce? that's a red flag). Three emails and two attempts at calls and no response. I contacted Groupon and they gave me "dave's" email. After two days and three emails, he responded that the order i wanted to place would require an "additional $20 plus shipping". He also said they would take 3-4 weeks to ship. WTF? Rather than chase my tail, I have immediately contacted Groupon for a refund. These guys - SSR - are bush league. Not recommended. read more

Dealing with Sleepy Sheep Ranch was hands down the worst customer service experience of my life. Based upon this experience and other Yelp reviews, I am concerned that this business may be running a scam through Groupon. On April 11, 2013, I purchased a Groupon for $225 worth of lamb. It is now 4 1/2 months later and I still don't have the meat. I immediately placed my order and received an e mail response indicating they were a "Mom and Pop" operation and wouldn't be able to fill the order for two weeks. I felt sorry for them, because they probably oversold the Groupon and were trying desperately to catch up. I decided to be patient. There was still no lamb or communication a month later. I sent a pleasant request for its status. I received a canned response indicating they were busy and would not contact me until the lamb was ready to be shipped. Again, I decided to be patient. I was hopeful the lamb would arrive for my son's 30th birthday on June 26. Nope. No lamb and no communication. Mid-July, I finally contacted Groupon, who gave me an alternate e mail address. Again, I sent a pleasant and respectful e mail, requesting the status of my order and explaining my son's going away party was in two weeks and I would really like to have the lamb for the party (it had now been 3 months since my original order). Dave responded and was very apologetic. He promised to ship the lamb early in the week of the party. The party came and went. No lamb and no communication. I contacted Dave again in early August. Again, he was apologetic and promised to ship my lamb the next day. Two weeks came and went. No lamb and communication. A week and a half ago, I received notification of a Paypal charge of $28 for shipping. The shipping was supposed to be $12, but I paid anyway, because I was just relieved that the lamb was on its way. A week ago, I contacted Groupon to do an outreach to the merchant. I really didn't want a refund, just the lamb. Groupon contacted Dave and let me know that he had 3 days to respond to me. It is now August 29. No lamb and no communication. I am especially distressed by this transaction because I was exceedingly patient and pleasant in my communications with Sleepy Sheep Ranch. From other Yelp reviews, it is now clear that they have filled other orders while ignoring mine for 4 1/2 months. Based up the Yelp reviews, however, it's probably better that the meat wasn't shipped to me unchilled and in the mail for 5 -7days. You may think 1 star is harsh, so let me explain myself. I bought the Travelzoo voucher from Sleepy Sheep Ranch back in November. I immediately made plans to do our ride soon after. The morning of our ride we got a text message (not very professional) letting us know since it was raining that the ride was canceled and to get back with them regarding a time to rescheduled. I texted back, never heard from them. I e-mailed 2 more times after that, never heard from them. After the 3rd e-mail I finally got a response. So we finally booked our ride. John, the trail ride leader, was very nice and helpful with the horses. I don't have any complaints about him. However, we were promised a 3 hour ride coupled with a freshly grilled steak over an open fire with wine. What we actually got: The beginning of the ride was probably about 30 minutes, then we stopped for our "steak dinner". When we got to the little pond area, there was no fire (it was quite chilly out). On top of that, David had just pre-cooked some steaks and had them sitting on a plate wrapped in saran wrap. There was a bottle of A1 sauce, it was empty. To go with the steak, we had grapes and 2 green onions...no sides or bread or anything like that. There was no wine, only canned sodas in a cooler. There wasn't any hand sanitizer, who wants to eat supper after touching horses without washing your hands? To top it off, they pretty much just left us out there for 45 minutes by ourselves. When John eventually came back to get us, we got back on our horses and rode back to the ranch...it was probably a 15 minute ride back. So we were probably on the horses a total of 45 minutes and we had a pretty awful meal. We paid $50/person for this experience, and it was probably only worth about $20. If I had paid the full price of $100/person I would have been extremely irate. Apparently the part about it being 3 hours is including the drive to and from the ranch. The idea of the whole excursion is a great one, but unfortunately they completely missed the mark. Disorganization and crappy food really disappointed my husband and I, and I'd like to think we're pretty easy going people. I went on a trail ride at Sleepy Sheep Ranch a few months ago and wish I had never gone. Read all the reviews on Rip Off Report online to get an idea of how this place is run. My story: I'll tell you the moral of my story first: DO NOT TRUST DAVID MITCHELL AT SLEEPY SHEEP RANCH. HE DOES NOT HONOR HIS WORD. They ran out of regular trail ride horses, saddle, etc. so I was put on an English saddle on a horse with no bit in its mouth. When I balked at getting on the horse (look up the difference between an English saddle and a Western saddle and you'll see why), David assured me it would be ok, that this horse was his personal riding horse and I'd be fine. Ignorantly, I trusted him, thinking surely he wouldn't want anyone to get hurt. Unfortunately that was not the case. My horse acted up the entire ride and i was at its mercy. Towards the end, it broke into a run, I couldn't stop it (no bit....which I didn't realize until we were on the ride), the stirrup broke off and I was thrown to the ground, knocked unconscious, suffered a concussion, torn adductor (thigh) muscle and am still suffering dizziness. I was taken to the hospital after I regained consciousness. We contacted David and he said he would help with my medical bills. (Yes, I signed a waiver, but waivers don't cover negligence.) Since then, I have contacted him by phone (when his voicemail isn't full), e-mail, regular mail and certified mail. He has responded twice but then never does what he says. He said he was sending me a refund for the trail ride over a month ago. It has never arrived. He won't provide his insurance information to me. It is wrong to treat people this way. Beware of David Mitchell and Sleepy Sheep Ranch. Read Rip Off Report for other injuries and fraud committed by him. He keeps changing his company's name. Wonder why? read more

I went with some friends up to Sleepy Sheep Ranch and could not have been more impressed. The staff is beyond friendly and make it their priority to ensure you are having a great time. The ranch is a bit hard to find but once you are there you are welcomed with open arms and saddled up right away. If you need a brief lesson in riding they are more than willing to help. The ride is great and takes you through twisted trees, open land and even past a little pond. Lunch or dinner is served halfway through the ride and was DELICIOUS! I wanted to take a doggie bag home. They barbeque whatever meat you want, serve sides, fresh fruit and wine all while seated right next to another pond. The ride back is nice and slow and relaxing. Never received my lamb order - do not order meat from them. I bought a Groupon for $225 worth of lamb on April 11th. The Groupon did not work on their web site, so I attempted to call them. They never answered the phone when I called and did not return my phone calls. I then attempted to order via email as that was supposedly an option. I received nothing but auto-generated emails for responses. I was never sure anyone actually recieved my order or was working on it. After several week passed, I attempted to contact them again. Finally I got an email from "Kristy" saying my meat should arrive the week of April 29th. That week came and went. Several weeks later, I tried to contact them again. I have received no response other than the auto-generated "thanks for your order" emails. Seven weeks have passed since my order was placed and I have nothing but frustration to show for it. My husband and I went to Sleepy Sheep for our 2 yr anniversary last month. I had only been horseback riding once before when I was very young, so I was a bit nervous. I really appreciated that they tried to make me as comfortable as possible on my horse before we went out on the trail. The horses were very tame, and the trail was very pretty and peaceful. We even had a nice little picnic by the pond in the middle of our ride. We had such a fun and memorable time there. I only wish we lived closer so we could go visit more often! read more

This was my first ride. David, all staffs are professional and helpful. Trail was wonderful. Beginning with sidewalk by the prairie, we went into a forest, tried narrow path, passed under a twig, though a shallow hollow, and at last, we reached a open space in the forest to have barbecue. Mid November was cool on cloudy day, but an open air fire welcomed us there. Horses are well tamed and calm. I had difficulty in handling horse heads up and distract him from grasses, but even if you are beginner, the horses are clever enough to follow the line by itself. I was nervous at first, but had fun at the end. So there is nothing to hesitate! read more

Do not purchase a Groupon for lamb from this place! I called the ranch in June to redeem my Groupon, in the hopes of sending my father-in-law lamb for Father's Day. I placed my order via email on June 4. I then spent the next month and a half trying to reach someone at the ranch to confirm my order and check the status. After several emails and calls, I heard NOTHING back -- even after getting Groupon involved. Groupon refunded my money after a very frustrating few weeks.I will never do business with Sleepy Sheep Ranch again. First of all, the positives. The people were really nice and the horses were well fed and good natured. The stop at the pond was nice too. Now the not so positives. If you have spent any time around horses then you know that these horses are not taken care of like they should be. Their feet were all long and a few had splits in their hooves. They were also all barefoot which wouldn't be to bad if they were actually taken care of. The guide said that they could only get the farrier out on Monday and Tuesdays since they needed them all the rest of the time to be available for rides. They looked like they hadn't been trimmed in ages and my and my mom's horse felt like they were about to go lame. They looked like they hadn't been brushed in ages too. My horse had rats in his mane and just looked messy all the way around. All of the other horses looked the same. It made me really sad. The horses were constantly harassed by flies and I never saw them use fly spray. A couple of horses were actually bleeding from the flies. My horse had actually rolled with the saddle on before I got there and the guide just dusted off the seat when he told me that like it was no big deal. That's horrible for a horse back to roll in a saddle and it's not good for the saddle either. Then when I got in the saddle it burned my butt through my jeans since the horse had been standing in the sun all day. Apparently they saddle them in the morning for the morning ride then leave them saddled till the end of the day. They are saddled all day with the cinches tight. When we brought them back, no one unsaddled them, loosened the cinch or took off the bridles. They just said to send them into the pen fully saddled and they would get to them 'later'. I almost pulled the saddle off myself....I couldn't believe it. I was always taught that you brush the horse before you start to get them ready. Then when you are done, you remove the saddle and bridle and rinse off your horse. You take care of the horse before you take care of yourself. I was so disappointed to see horses that worked so hard in the heat and were not taken care of. Also, last but not least, my Mom was told one price but when we got there it was more money. It was also supposed to be a 3 hr ride but it was more like 2 hrs total as well since people were late in getting there. I was really disappointed. This is not a 'working' ranch....the horses are just used for these rides and they are not well cared for. Either they were never taught how to treat a horse or they don't care and It's all about the bucks. I will never go back there and would not recommend it. read more

Yet another dissatisfied customer who bought the Groupon and got nothing in return. My order was place in Sept of 2013, and I heard nothing for about two months. I sent an email and was assured that the order would be shipped in a few weeks. Now, I know this is not the kind of product that one just makes and sends out. The meat comes from an animal that has to be raised for months, butchered, and processed before it can be shipped, so I cut them some slack. Fast forward to February 24th of 2014. I have since sent several emails that have gone unanswered and called them several times, but their mailbox is full. I have given up and asked Groupon for a refund. While I'm pretty angry at the lack of service, my guess is that the ranch thought it would be a good way to sell more product and maybe gain some new customers, but they would have to have a lot of help and a huge flock to fill so many orders. I can only assume that they got so overwhelmed that they just stopped answering calls. I hope they get things turned around. read more

Buyer Beware - We went on a Groupon at the Sleepy Sheep Ranch for a Cattle Herding Experience... We ended up doing a 3 hour trail ride instead, but as we had a good time we left a 5 star rating on the Groupon Website, but whilst we were getting ready to leave David the owner approached our group and asked us if we would be interested in a 20 Hour overnight ride & camp out for $250, which we said yes.. He wanted cash upfront but I told him we only had a Debit or Credit card, so he fired up PayPal on his Laptop PC and we paid him $250, this event was promised to be within 3 weeks, so we agreed to it, after 4 weeks we had not heard anything so my wife contacted David via Facebook he said that others were delaying things but it will be in a few days, now after 6 weeks we are no longer able to do it as all our weekends are used up with Family, friends & Vacation. So my wife sends an email to David asking for a refund as too much time has now elapsed and we can no longer do it, he did not respond, She tried again to email him, still no response, Tried calling and leaving a message, still no response, So she tried Facebook and he still did not respond, She left a message on his Facebook wall but it was deleted within minutes of posting. Then I took over and emailed David, asking him to either Refund us immediately or I will take some action against him, still no answer. So I gave him one last email warning telling him he has until midday Monday 23rd July to refund us otherwise I will tell everyone on reviews and social networking websites about his non-communication when he owes clients money... Still no reply. So I am leaving this message to let you all know of our story, and after doing some Google research and looking on the ripoffreport website I am not the only one who has found out what a piece of work he is, just Google Sleepy Sheep Ranch or the previous name Trugon Ranch, why he changed it is in some of the on-line complaints. So I will leave you to read those and decide if you take their opinion on-board about David and his company... My wife and I will never go again and we have told lots of people of our issue and they have also been put off going... Please do not pay up front for any service, I doubt if you will get what you want if you do and you will never get a refund!! After my first inquiry I received the 'so sorry, we oversold the Groupon and Living Social specials' reply with a promise to ship in two weeks. That is the last communication I have had from them. Add me to the seemingly endless list of those who bought a Groupon from the Sleepy Sheep Ranch. It was relatively local to us, only about 15 miles away so we thought ordering some lamb would be a great way to treat out of town guests (from Alaska) to some local, organic lamb. Long story short, we sent many, many emails and made many, many phone calls. Never a response. But reading the reviews of those who DID get the meat, in warm, unsanitary condition, perhaps our outcome of no product, no contact, etc. was a blessing in disguise. No response well past the "expiration" of the Groupon. Still tried for many months. No answer. Groupon asked us to try once more. Still no answer. After hubby recently drove by the place and said that it looked like they had either gone out of business or just stopped taking care of things (and animals??), we give in and asked Groupon for a refund which they promptly processed. Any business, whether you are a corporation or a mom and pop shop should know what type of production they can handle when dealing with groupon, that's why there are "maximums"!!! We had a very relaxing afternoon riding through the North Texas woods. The smell of pine was evident in the fresh outdoor air. The horses were very tame and followed our lead with a firm hand. We wound up at a nice pond where we had a tasty grilled steak and wine lunch. Towards the end, there was also a 19th century cemetery on the trail which added to the old West feel of our ride. The ranch is a very easy drive North of Dallas. Just map it out and don't solely rely on GPS out there. The owner and staff are good people. read more

I've never done anything like this before and it was a fantastic experience. The people were friendly, Scott, the trail boss was excellent. The steak lunch was great. The horses were well behaved (I think I got the rowdiest of the horses, Jag, but he was fun to work with). Definitely a 5 star review. Wonderful experience for anyone that has spent most of their life in the city. Also, it was about 90° yesterday on the trail, but that never bothered us. A good portion of the trail was shaded. David and Scott were amazing. This was the best horse experience I have personally been on. It is not just one after the other riding down the side of the road. it is a true Trail with areas you are able to gallop, run a little and enjoy the true nature and power of a sweet, gentle, loving horse. So, bought the Groupon deal April 5th. $99.00 for 200.00 worth of lamb. Shameful! The lamb leg they shipped me was a 1/4 of a leg, not enough to feed my family. The shoulder roast was cut into to 2 pieces. Not great for roasting. Also, did I mention that I did not get this until July, almost 3 months and 1/2 the order was missing. My wife and I went to Sleepy Sheep Ranch last Friday, 09/28/2012. We both were very nervous and worried about doing this at first, because we have never been on a horse before. However, it turned out to be an amazing experience for both of us. What a fun adventure!!!! The ranch was a little difficult to find and our GPS went ballistic about 30 minutes before reaching the destination. We found the place by pure luck and were exactly 35 minutes late, but the staff and visitors were patiently waiting for us (big apologies and thanks to everyone for being so understanding & kind). The horses were very tame and calm and our guides, Scott & Tammy (?), were very helpful, friendly, and extremely patient concerning my wife moving in the wrong direction, dropping her water bottle, shoes . . . and pulling her car out of the ditch. The weather was nice and the ride was so relaxing. We rode for quite a while then were taken to a little spot overlooking a pond . . . a gorgeous view. The steak lunch and wine were delicious. I also enjoyed feeding and petting the fish in the pond with our left over lunch. I still can't believe the fish actually let us pet them. Overall, it was a fun little adventure and we'd definitely go back. . . A five star review for sure. read more

What a beautiful Saturday afternoon for a trail ride with 6 of my girlfriends! David was a wonderful host & chef and our 'trail boss' Scott was a true horseman! Our horses were calm but still had spirit, even after a few trail rides earlier in the day. We enjoyed the many ponds and an old cemetery along the trails in the peaceful woods. Total riding time was around 2 hours. We were left to relax and enjoy the scenery and a great steak & salad dinner with wine for about 45 minutes. (Yes, remember to bring $$ for a tip for the trail boss!) Looking forward to making this an annual or semi-annual get together! I highly recommend! read more

We took our grandboys to the Sleepy Sheep Ranch on June 16th. All four of us had the most fun time. My sides are still hurting from laughing. The trail guide (Cory) was a hoot and looked after the whole group like a mother hen. He took us to a very old cemetery along the very scenic trails. We sang songs, along the way and had so much fun. The steak dinner was PERFECT! A five star western dinner with wine included too. The horses were great and matched the rider well, thanks again to Cory and David. This is a must do.. Took the kids for a trail ride. We had a great time. The staff was extremely friendly. The horses seemed well-trained. The steak lunch was very good (with nice presentation, especially for being out in the country). Overally, it was a very pleasant and fun get-away. My kids thanked me over and over. Remember to bring some cash to tip the trail leader - she deserves it. (One frustrating thing is that MapQuest doesn't map the location correctly- had to ask at a service station, but they knew right where it was.) read more
