Listen, I used to love Slim's like no other SOLELY because it was the one place in the greater Chicagoland area where you could get a legit Italian beef sandwich, with quality meat and the finest ingredients, that's 100% halal. Unfortunately, slim's is now under new management and the quality of everything has tanked. From the bread, thick as heck sandwich roll at sublengths for hot dogs, to the wax tasting cheese, and then to the cheap, poor rubbery meats they use, to the very obviously frozen preprepped foods from Restaurant Depot... I cant anymore. I say this not after one poor experience. Nay. I say all this after giving them another chance, figuring new management just doesn't know yet and is getting adjusted to the biz... not just another chance. 4x of consistently abysmal food since the strange shut down and sudden reopening. Honestly, this place is just like the cheap spots on Devon Ave that think they can do American food but is just a poor, bootleg version. Old Slim's, I miss you dearly. RIP. You are missed. Gotta love Slim's. I go here at least once a week for lunch. It has a nice old timey feel to it. Cashiers are always really nice and work quick. I have never waited more than 5 minutes for my food. Even when it's busy they get people in and out quickly. Outdoor seating as well for warmer weather. Always been satisfied with my food. I have now had the Chicago style hotdog, double cheese burger, a combo, and the fries (w/ cheese). Everything has always been amazing. My only complaint would be the fries are always in tiny pieces which is kind of annoying when eating. Overall a great place for Chicago famous foods. I would definitely recommend if you're into Chicago dogs and italian beef. read more

Buddy had a double cheeseburger w/bacon and loved it. I had the burger with Italian Beef, although I changed the American cheese to Provolone. Turned out pretty darn good. Fries are very good. I hate when I go to a restaurant and the food tastes like it came from a bag. I wanted to love Slim's, I did... Tomorrow I become vegetarian for the first time in over 10 years. In preparation for my final meal, I yelped Italian beef sandwiches and Slim's was the first hit for my zip code. I noticed their 3 1/2 star rating and read a few reviews. Many people mentioned the curly fries and milkshakes as being good. I went in today and had the italian beef sandwich with mozzarella cheese and hot giardiniera peppers. I also asked that it be 'dipped'. I started to order the curly fries, but learned they were frozen and from a bag, so I opted for their regular 'fresh-cut' fries. To round things out, and as my final indulgent dessert, I had a vanilla shake. Everything was $11 andsomechange. Which I liked. I waited about 3 minutes and a young woman brought my shake over to me. Which I also liked. I went outside. About 5 minutes later, a different young woman brought my food to me outside, to-go. Which I liked most. The beef was meh. Not much flavor and their version of dipped is not the same as what I am accustomed too. Few peppers on the sandwich and the cheese was in one clump in the middle of the sandwich. Would I order it again? No. The fries were okay, though a bit mushy and bland for my tastes. The shake was just okay. Tasted like cheap vanilla ice cream and milk. I was definitely let down. BUT, on the brighter side of things, this visit to Slim's confirmed that I am making the right choice about cutting meat out again. Like most things, it didn't live up to the hype. If you're used to bagged, bland, reminiscent of dorm-food, food, then this is a great cheap spot. If not, look elsewhere. read more

Wow, all this time I thought Slim's was little more than a neighborhood hot dog stand. Sure, they sell hot dogs, but there's so much more. In addition to hot dogs, burgers, salads, they have an impressive array of sandwiches (pepper and egg (and not just during Lent), po' boys, fish, several chicken options, and steak), but also tacos and soups. Pretty big menu for such an unassuming spot on a nondescript block in Ravenswood. But even with such a diverse menu, I didn't deviate from getting a hot dog and fries; this being my first visit, I wanted to start with what they're known for. Two hot dogs and fries sets you back only $4.99. That's a deal any way you slice it, but when you take into account that the hot dogs are first-rate, and the fresh-cut fries--oh my god the fries--are absolutely terrific, the value rises exponentially. I also added a chocolate shake (purportedly homemade) to my order. Certainly not the healthiest dinner, but every now and then, you gotta do it. A well-rounded junk-food meal every once in a while never killed anyone. The shake too, was fantastic, and had just the right about of pronounced chocolate flavor and just the right consistency. The owner was so nice. I observed him interacting with several customers (both in person and on the phone) as well as his staff, and he seems like a genuine salt-of-the-earth kinda guy. That always makes me feel better about giving someone my business. And what may just be the pièce de résistance: an old-timey Ms. Pac Man machine. I haven't touched one of those in probably thirty years but it made me smile just to be near it. I think Slim's does what it does very well: great food at reasonable prices, served quickly. I saw this place by my girlfriends house, but they were closed (closed on sundays it seems). I came back later in the week and tried it out. The service was good, fast and friendly and the place was actually nicely laid out. I had the beef with hot peppers and it was pretty good. Slim's is the go-to spot for Chicago style comfort food in Ravenswood. They've got everything I look for in a local hot dog grill. (1) Properly prepared Windy City dietary staples: The hot dogs are fresh n' juicy, the cooks aren't shy with all the necessary condiments, the fries are warm from the cooker, and they've got plenty of cheesy and chili variations for zealous eaters. (2) Casual entertainment, circa 1980s-1990s: There's a vintage Pac-Man machine to pass the time while your order is prepped, and once your food arrives, you can soak up some syndicated sitcom classics on local network tv. (3) Quick food prep: The food came out fast, about the same time it took to play one round of the aforementioned Pac-Man. Hot dogs are typically an impulse buy, a meal-between-other-meals situation, and when I decide it's time for a Chicago style, I want it fast before I change my mind. (4) Cheap: $2.50 for a dog with everything. Fries for $1.80. 2 dogs for $5. Slim seems to agree with me that the cost of a hot dog, at least for now, should be inelastic and resistant to inflation. These are the reasonable prices I remember from my younger days and I can't help but use such solid values as a benchmark against other purchases (i.e. Mentally noting...$100 for dinner for 2? I could've gotten 40 hot dogs instead...enough for a whole week). (Bonus points: #5) Service: This criterion is usually absent in the Chicago hot dog stand scene. The curly cheese fries are pretty good and don't taste like old oil, which deserves recognition. The cheese that comes with them is addictive (it's a wayyyy better version of cheese-whiz, and is deliciously cheap in that tasty "wow this is bad for me, but I'll keep eating it" kind of way). I think I could drink that stuff. Gross, but true Their burgers are decent- cheap and stacked with condiments Polish sausages are okay- I like Byron's better. But again, well executed and you get what you pay for. Salads are really good! I love the Cobb, but not the dressing (why honey mustard on a Cobb salad?). Ranch is the way to go. Hotdogs are awesome. Well put together and just the way it should be for Chicago style dogs and chili cheese dogs. They offer a nice fried fish sandwich for you piscatarians, along with a black bean burger and an egg and pepper sandwich that my mom loved. I ordered the steak sandwich combo with everything. I didn't even know what everything was, but I knew I wanted it. I walked by the cook's counter on the way to the john. And I watched and heard him pounding my meat. I was worried. That tough, eh, that you feel the need to pound it? Oh, well. The I startled the back room boy as I came through the kitchen to find the john. Back upfront, I filled up my stryo cup of Cherry Coke and waited. About 5 minutes, just like Slim said it would be. The sandwich was good, and not too tough. A lot of flavor with lettuce and onions and a sauce, and something spicy. I was happy about that. Tiny bit o' gristle but otherwise fairly tender. The fries had a nice "Florida tan" and were hand cut. Tasty fries, I have to admit. They have curly ones, too. What's there to say about a neighborhood quick sandwich joint? Standard charhouse fare. I hear the Italian Beef, the burgers, and the chicken pita are good. I would definitely come back. They need to clean the condiment containers, though. I've eaten here exactly once, after hearing good things. The slim burger was hot and made to order. Quality wise, it was ordered medium rare and arrived well done and dried out, not the greatest. The Italian beef on the burger was also dry and rubbery, and made for a dry chewy burger. Service was quick and efficient, and it looks like they remodeled since there were more tables and tv's than I remember seeing years ago passing by. We stopped by to grab some lunch, Ryan got the slim special (i think thats what is called) and i got a combo. Im usually not a combo girl and i should've listened, too much in my sandwich and to me, the sausage was too salty for me. Everything on the menu looks delicious! i can't wait to try more. A friend of mine told me about this restaurant and when he told me about the "Slim burger" I had to order it and it arrived nice amd hot. A brioche bun topped with italian beef, hot peppers, and a juicy burger on the bottom with fries on the side had my mouth watering. The eloté bites are phenomenal as well guys! never thought an elote fried up in a dough ball would taste so great! I haven't been inside the restuarant yet because of Covid, but when things blow over Slim's will definitely be one of the many places I will stop at first, Keep up the awesome food and buisness! read more

I only discovered Slim's a year ago, so I don't feel I have the clout of a long-time regular, but the Slim burger instantly became my favorite burger in Chicago - Italian beef, thin juicy patty, giardenera and special sauce. So it came as a bit of a slap in the face when I went in yesterday to realize the price of said favorite burger increased over 50%. That said, it seemed my other regular favs (cheese fries and butterfinger/Nutella milkshake) remained the same. The staff remains friendly, quick and excellent, and considering ho-hum burgers from other nearby establishments are a a good deal more, I can't be too upset about it. I saw this place on Grubhub and after reading the few reviews on here, I decided to give it a try. I called in because of the free fries w/ sandwich offer they mentioned on their yelp page. I don't think it would've been applied if I would've ordered through Grubhub. So anyway, I got the chicken pita and cheeseburger for the boy, and we got a curly fry and hand cut fry (free!). The sandwiches were both pretty darn good, and the curly fries good too, but the hand cut fries were a little too greasy for me. I liked them, but I think when fries are delivered, they turn a little soggy and greasy. So I'll give those another try if I ever stop in and eat there. This is my go to hang over food spot. I don't think they have the best tasting cheeseburgers, but theyre always consistent. You're going to get a slightly better than average fast food every single time. The delivery is a breeze, pleasant and quick. N the age of ridiculously priced food, I appreciate the affordability. Slim's: ain't nothing wrong with it. I've called ahead for food almost a dozen times and it's always ready when they told me it would be over the phone, which is usually a scant five minutes, by the way. The menu is chockabock full of solid offerings, but I think the best value is Two Chicago Style Dogs with Fries (you get a BUNCH of fries!) for only $4.99. I also like the Cobb salad with the grilled chicken OR the chicken strips. Everyone is nice and helpful. If you happen to be dining in, they offer WiFi. I go to Slim's very regularly because I live close by and they are so consistent and never skip a beat. The owner and manager is so friendly and welcoming and that carries over to the rest of the staff. They have implemented an amazing Rewards Program that is so user friendly because the points are tracked through the debit card I use. All the food is so good and if your looking for a deal the Daily Specials are very affordable. And they have the best milk shakes in town!!! They even have off the wall flavors like Nutella!
