Jake's Pup in the Ruf was delicious! I grabbed the chili cheese fries to share and a breakfast burrito, and both were surprisingly delicious. The fries came loaded and messy in the best way. Served with plenty of chili and cheese in every bite. The burrito was hearty and fresh, great portion size, and way better than expected for a quick-stop joint. Service was fast and friendly, and the prices felt totally fair for the amount of food. I'd definitely come back when I'm craving comfort food done right if I'm ever in Chicago again. I stay approximately a 3-minute walk from Jakes Puff in the Ruff. This is my go-to place when I am in need of a quick delicious meal for the past 5 years. I usually order the cheese fries, and I have never once been disappointed by the proportion size which is plentiful as well as the crispness of the fries. Recently I have gotten into the breakfast special with 3 eggs, hash browns, and sausage that I order with avocado, and cheese which is extra. I must admit while this is a great flavorful breakfast bowl, I hate how the cheese isn't mixed in with the eggs as they simply lay it on top not fully melted especially since I'm paying extra. The service is always hospitable, and they always answer the phone when I call except when it is summer because people are in dire need of their ice cream cones for pickup I guess lol. I just hate the fact that I placed an order for pickup for 2 chicken tacos with cheese, and no tomatoes that I have ordered twice before, and once again the tomatoes were added. It would not be an issue if the taco wasn't a humongous mess. Falling apart like baby back ribs or something with rat droppings of cheese. I am so disappointed, I don't know what to say. Oh, the chocolate shake is good because it's real ice cream but it's so thick make sure to use a spoon. read more

The dogs were a Vienna Beef 8 to 1 dog. Beefy non casing dogs stuffed in a bun that couldn't contain its beefy goodness. The onions were fresh and had a food bite. The tomatoes wasn't cut into halves but I got fresh slices. The pickles were meh Overall it's a solid dog but nothing earth shattering. Solid hole in the wall burger place. I got the Calvin combo- a double cheeseburger, onion rings, and a drink for roughly $9 including tax. The burger was actually great. I really liked it. I had a tiny hope that the onion rings would be hand breaded, but they are just frozen. Still good! They only have RC brands for the fountain drinks. The ambience is pretty rough--no AC during the summer, the tables and chairs are from a different era, they hide napkins behind the counter, no free fountain drink refills, and you'll probably smell like frying grease when you leave. Chili? Coffee? Iced coffee? Breakfast items? It's gonna take a minute to try all these items, but I'd be content with accepting that challenge. You're able to order pickup online and order delivery. It seems that the quality of food depends on hitting them with time-of-day-appropriate orders right during peak hours. For instance, though they serve breakfast all day, order it at breakfast time when apparently they have their breakfast groove on. Fried items ordered in the morning are more likely to be ill-attended (and slightly burned) than if they are ordered at lunch, etc. The plates are pretty pricey for the quality, too. Staff is nice, though; that and the full-sized ceramic couch-with-hot-dog bumps this from 2 1/2 stars, but there's no real reason to ever return. read more

A 5-star BLT. I'd been craving one all day. Finally, I hit upon Jakes to slake my hunger for the salty crunchy goodness of a BLT. Absolutely delicious. Salty, crispy bacon - not burned. Crunchy, watery lettuce - delicious tomato. A double decker sandwich on perfectly toasted white bread. A BLT can really only be eaten on white bread - and this is the only thing I like mayonnaise on as well. I can not even tell you how lucky I am to live near this place! I am a big fan of their gyro sandwich (everything on and I order extra sauce of the side) and cheesy French fries (I tried ordering just fries, but it just not the same without the cheese for me). But what you do get at Jake's is tasty, fast food that is pretty cheap. I'm schocked the place is even around given how the neighborhood is getting more upscale. The staff has always been nice to me. This oddly named Uptown staple, hanging in there at Montrose and Sheridan since 1959, serves some of the best fried chicken I've ever had. Except it's technically not fried chicken -- it's "broasted" chicken, broasting being a somewhat rare and mysterious technique that produces something similar to fried chicken, but better than most. It's perfectly crispy on the outside, perfectly juicy on the inside, and delicious all around. It's also extremely cheap. They have a large menu that includes all the Chicago fast food staples like hot dogs and Italian beef, but it's the broasted chicken that will bring me back. I ordered in advance through the Ritual app for easy and safe pickup during the pandemic. Despite being such an old-school place they are up to date with online ordering. I don't know what a "pup in the ruf" is, but I'll be back for more of it! read more

We ordered a triple cheeseburger, jumbo shrimp dinner, and six wings for ~$29 after tax -- not worth it even if it were FREE. The food was super greasy and gave me diarrhea afterwards. The triple cheeseburger tasted freezer burned and low-grade quality beef patty. The beef patties were under seasoned and overly greasy. The bun fell apart after the first bite Jumbo shrimps were extremely heavily breaded, under seasoned, and the little shrimp inside was dry, rubbery, and overcooked. While the term used for shrimp sizes are not regulated, the shrimp size in this dish was no where considered "jumbo" or even "large." $13.99+tax for 7 medium sized shrimps, some french fries, overly boiled corn, slaw, and a slice of white bread roll was highway robbery! The wings were also under seasoned, dry, and overcooked. I normally don't care to judge a restaurant for the service if the food is decent, but the lady that took my order was just really rude and dishonest! I tried to use my restaurant.com voucher here and she initially wouldn't accept it because she thought it could be a fake copy. I insisted it was not fake. Then she told me that I was supposed order the food "on the app" (what app???) and redeem the voucher online, which is total bullsh!t. I patiently explained to her how the voucher works and told her she needs to call the number on the voucher and redeem the voucher #. She told me to call instead. WTF? Finally after several more back and forth, she gave in and called. We got our food about 15 minutes after we placed our order and only had about 10 minutes to eat the food and get out before they closed. One of the restaurant employees came up to us and yelled at us, "HEY WE'RE CLOSING!" Had the lady not wasted her time trying to swindle us out of using the voucher, we would've had more time to eat. I should've just left Jakes the moment the lady gave me a hard time about the voucher. Instead I chose to give myself possibly food poisoning. Way to spend my weekend on the can. read more
