An absolute MUST STOP along I-35 and now my second visit to West, Texas (not West Texas, which is completely different). I've been to the other one and now I am here. And while the other one is great and fabulous, this one is one star better. A huge selection of baked goods, coffee, decor, clothing, drinks and more. The Kissing Pig Cafe has so many food options, too! Mrs. K. has not had a kolache in years and she's now pescatarian which presents certain challenges. It would be awesome if they had some kolaches with just cheese or were sweet, so while I had one with ham and cheese and one with sausage in cheese, she was at least able to enjoy a strawberry and cream danish as well as the always awesome poppyseed kolache. It's possible that a pecan square was purchased for later consumption, too. The self-serve coffee was great and we enjoyed all of this inside at a comfortable table. And after that, more shopping. So much great stuff to choose from here and very, very clean restrooms. If you're overwhelmed by that massive baked goods counter, just ask for recommendations. They'll get you sorted for sure! Slovaceks is always a great place to stop on the way up or down I35. It's always clean, employees are always friendly, and they have a large selection of unique gifts. The bakery is awesome as well and you can't make a wromg decision.

Slovacek's is very popular. I knew it would be busy for a Saturday lunch time but didn't realize this was the place to be. Expect to come early and wait in line for the food. The staff was very patient and helpful. I will say the kolaches are delicious so I didn't mind the wait. I got the jalapeño popper, sausage with cheese and jalapeño and turkey & swiss. It's a good size kolache so I should've just order 2. The jalapeño popper was my favorite. There is seating available to eat inside but good luck finding a seat if it's busy. I loved the Christmas chachkis there. They had a separate building for Christmas decor as well. You will definitely will not be bored here lol We will need to come back to stock up on their sausage lol

Such a cute fun place with lots of nik-naks. Also a lot of Texas college memorabilia. Bathrooms were super clean and attended to. The service is great. With all the different kolaches to choose from the staff were really helpful and help moved the long line along.

Shopped-12.21.25: 1st time here on the drive to Waco. They carry a variety of baked loaf sized cakes and a variety of Xmas decor for sale. They carry Xmas decor year round & even have a BBQ'd meat counter where freshly cooked meat is sold. The kolaches are the best I've had so far. Tried the spicy jalapeño, w/sausage & cheese....it was DELICIOUS w/ a nice kick. Friendly staff who were able to get the customers in the long line addressed rather quickly w/ no fuss and friendly faces. Looking forward to returning next time I am in town!

Leaving Texas and Slovacek's was on my list... so we had to stop. I was not prepared for what was inside. Definitely not just food and gas.. large variety of odds and ends. Funny socks to an array of Nutcrackers. Antiques to a full meat market with sausages and game meats. BBQ spot to multiple Kolaches. And everything in between. Everyone there was very friendly. Seemed to enjoy their jobs and you can tell their bakery items and kolaches are made with care. My son got a breakfast burrito even though it was mid afternoon- he said it was one of the best he has had because the sausage tasted homemade. I assume they use to house made sausage. As we were leaving we saw that next door was an entire other store that said Slovacek's Furniture with a large array of outside decorations before entering. We didn't have enough time to really explore but it was worth the stop. Store was clean, they have restrooms and gas so easy place to stop and get everything you need!

My husband and I stopped here for Father's Day around 4pm. We ordered several sausage kolaches and a few raspberry Kolaches. We love the taste but there are differences between this recipe and the one across the freeway. This store has a lot of general merchandise available to purchase, along with kolaches and baked goods. We spent well over an hour shopping the store, the garden, and the separate shop at the end of the property. They even offer a dog park for your fur babies.

If you like kolaches and pastries, you've got to stop here and treat yourself! On the way up I had the big boy Jalapeno cheese kolache. The sausage was really good, the spicyness was perfect and I would say mild to medium heat. On the way home we stopped again and this time I got ground pepper jack. It was fantastic but messy to eat in the car! it had the perfect amount of cheese, not heavy and goopy at all. The muffin was like a cinnamon roll with plenty of diced apples, cinnamon, and a perfect cream cheese glaze. Omg! Everything we put in our mouth from this place is 5 star! YUMMY! Don't let the long line scare you away, the employees are plentiful and keep the line moving quickly.

Is this up there with the great bbq places in the state? No. It's not trying to be. Hint hint daynes. Its a cafeteria style, you pick your meal, you go down the line, pick you sides and sauces..and your done. We had the three meat plate, and brisket sandwich plate. The meats on the plate were brisket, jalapeño sausage, and turkey. The sides on both plates were spicy pinto beans, Mac, and green beans. We had regular and spicy bbq. All the meats were good to great. The brisket was good, but missing that bark we like. The turkey was not dry. The best thing here, is when they say spicy, they mean spicy. Like runny nose spicy. Man it was good. The spicy bbq sauce was especially great. So just be careful because the beans were bordering on too spicy. The sausage was what daynes wished it could be. I know I keep ragging on daynes, but come here first, then go there and tell me if daynes belongs on any top list! I would pick still smoking any day! The Mac was delicious. The green beans were out of this world. Why not a 5? Well let's be honest, once you tried the true best in the state, it's hard to live up to it! As great as this place is, it's not snows or franklins or burnt bean epic. We still will definitely stop by when travel again!

We bought two meat plates and the BBQ potato. The potato was by far the best meal of the day. Nailed it. Portion sizes were great overall! The meat plate BBQ was alright. The issue we had was with the sides. I had mac and cheese and the potato salad. I will say, everything felt and tasted homemade. However, I feel like the chef is trying a little too hard to get authentic flavors. Let the BBQ be the star and give us some old-fashioned mustard potato salad and normal mac. Both of my sides tasted strange. They had a weird aftertaste, kind of sour or old, not sure. I never throw out food, but I didn't take the leftovers with me. My last critique is the actual BBQ sauce. It also tasted original and homemade but seemed to be trying too hard to be different. It almost felt like a tangy, sweet salsa or puree. Keep it simple, or perhaps offer choices between a general sweet traditional BBQ sauce and your homemade version. Giving it 4 stars until we visit and try again.
