Everyone knows that Texans love to talk Texas. I'm no exception, and something I love explaining to people who haven't been to Texas is that it's way more diverse than you think (topographically and in population). Central Texas has historic German and Czech communities/towns, for example - and it's something that a lot of people (even Texas) may not be aware of. West is a historic Czech community - known as the "Czech Heritage Capital of Texas" and the home of the kolache. Whenever I'm in the area, I always want to stop for a kolache, which is a Czech pastry of yeast dough and various fillings (sweet or savory). There are lots of places you can get kolaches in West (and even in most Texas cities - I used to eat a less traditional version growing up in Dallas, where they were sold next to donuts at donut shops), but Slovacek's is an amazing option and well worth a stop. I was driving from Dallas to San Antonio with my brother earlier this month, and we made a point to stop at Slovacek's. (It's also a gas station, so two birds one stone!) The kolache counter is something special - so many varieties! I panicked and ordered the first four that called to me (brisket; sausage, cheese, and jalapeno; apricot and cream cheese; and prune), but while those were being warmed up, I saw so many more I wanted (how could I forget to get a poppy seed!??!?! Next time!). All four were great. If you're in the area, you should definitely stop by Slovacek's and try one of their many kolaches. It's a special Texas experience. read more

Had to stop on my way home to Dallas from Round Rock. The variety of kolaches is always a hit for me! I ordered the boudin, brisket, cherry cheese and strawberry cheese kolaches. All were excellent! My husband, daughter and I loved them! I love this truck stop and can't wait to stop in whenever I'm on the 35. The kolaches are so, so, so, so good (yummy, yummy, yummy). My favorite is the poppyseed. Here you can buy beer, wine, meat, sausage, soda, fresh baked delicacies, clothes, socks, underwear, jewelry, postcards, candy, professional team paraphernalia, garden items, or take your dog for a long needed pee or poo. This place has everything you will need from a rest area or fuel stop aspect. They have a family restroom and their restrooms are very clean by the way with air dryers to dry your hands and no doors to go in or out. The family restroom was the only bathroom that had a door. They have a huge selection of Kolaches and deserts. They even have a BBQ restaurant called the Kissing Pig. Definitely worth trying out! I was so full off a pulled pork and potato salad. There is even a meat market here to shop from. There was a lot to choose from in the market. With all that they even have a huge selection of souvenirs and some nice framed Texas art work at a reasonable price. With all these goodies it still offers what a local gas station would offer but a lot more. They have their fuel prices reasonable compared to the rest of the local competitors in the area. The down side with my recent update is that they don't too much of seating area to sit down and eat. They have a lot of space to shop from but to not sit and eat was not what I expecting from my previous experience to my recent experience after traveling from DFW to Austin. Also, the place felt more compact with the amount people stopping to visit now. I am happy there are a lot people stopping by. I also saw a new building that they may be putting all their out door in. I cannot confirm or deny it, but hopefully that's what they are doing so they can have move of a seating area so you don't have to eat in your car or outside depending on the weather. There are plenty more fuel stations to fill up your vehicle and they do have plenty of parking space a dog part for your puppies to get out and run around for a bit. Whether you're heading north or south on I-35 take exit 253 to get here. It's on the south bound side of big huge overpass they put in place here. read more

Their apricot kolache is next to none. Very yummy. They must have put a whole apricot into that filling! Standard kolache options (cream cheese kolache and sausage kolache) are good but not better than other such kolaches you've tried. Brisket kolaches here are certainly not worth the $6 each that they charge you. They're full of chopped brisket (didn't taste smoked) in a tangy bbq sauce that didn't work as a kolache for me. Get the sliced brisket sandwich instead if you're here looking for brisket. The line was long, but not as long as the other place across the highway, and it moved along quickly. read more

As you'd expect, this was a sensory overload experience but so far everything I've eaten is totally worth it!! I had a jalapeño ranch chicken salad sandwich for the drive home. It was delicious, savory and with the right crunch & kick from jalapeños. I warmed up a couple kolaches at home, peach cream cheese and a Nutella cream cheese and OMGGGGG!!! Both are delicious! The peach had amazing flavor while the Nutella was decadent. I have several other flavors to try, a couple meat kolaches and a sausage plate - will report back! I made a pit stop at slovaceks on my back home from Dallas. I have heard a lot about their famous kolaches so I had to go inside and take a look around. This is more than just a gas station. They have a meat market, sandwich shop, and many kolaches for you to choose from. They also have many souvenirs, snacks, and a nice dog park for you to take your pup to. Their kolaches were great I got one sweet and one savory and there are plenty of different kolaches for you to choose from. This is a great spot to stop at and also the bathrooms are very clean and isn't as busy as a bucees. read more

Very popular stop for sure. Had a really long line for food and dessert area. We just had to jump in to scope it out, even if we planned to stop at Buc-ee's. Trying to stick to a plant-based lifestyle and then coming to Slovacek's is like going to Harrah's and having a gambling problem. If you're gonna fall off the wagon, though, you should do it here where it's worth it. I bought hot links, jalapeño cheddar summer sausage, garlic sausages, red midget cheese, and some smoked cheddar. So far I have tried the hot links, summer sausage, and smoked cheddar. As you can see, I grilled the hot links to perfection and they made for great sandwiches. They had a snap to them and some honest heat. Not too much, but enough to get your attention and hold it. The jalapeño summer sausage, frankly, was probably the best I have experienced. There were actually jalapeños in it, which many other sausage makers leave scarce. The sausage went well in a homemade charcuterie board - a frequent meal at the casa. It went especially well with apples and/or wheat crackers. The smoked cheddar brought on all the smoky flavor you want of a smoked cheese. You could even see the smoke marks on it, which gave it a unique look. The flavor profile ran deep on this one. Bring a cooler and an appetite when you come here. There is so much to try here in their deli section. Sandwiches, kolaches, desserts, etc. The store is a Texas institution for a reason. It is a spectacle for all the senses and a true slice of Texas. read more

This is a stop we make every trip we take from Austin to Dallas. This particular time we had the Brisket Kolache and the Jalapeño cream cheese bacon. The brisket was blaaah, flavorless and more bread than brisket- not impressed at all. The jalapeño, bacon & cream cheese had better flavor but definitely needed a lot more warming than what was provided and the content wasn't evenly distributed. The sweet ones we left unearned to eat at home. Nutella was SUPER DELISH!!! Definitely worth stopping for again. However, the rest were very hard by the morning and uneatable. A good stopping point when headed southbound towards Austin. They have all the kolaches here many sweet ones with all the seasonal fruit flavors. I prefer the savory ones with sausage. The jalapeño sausage is spicy with actual bits of jalapeño. The dough is soft and sweet and the day after heats up well in the microwave. Past a day it gets pretty dry quickly. When you enter be sure to grab your drinks before standing in the bakery line otherwise you'll have to check out twice. The line goes by fairly quickly and the staff is works hard to make sure of this. I also got some beer bread that they will gladly slice for you but I found it to be dry. As for ambiance, this is a fairly busy rest stop so it's fairly energized here. Restrooms are decent. read more

People usually stop by Bucees' on their drive from Dallas to Austin & vice verse. But this place is much more homey. We stopped here for the kolaches but they are very similar to Bucees in that they also sell meat, jams, snacks, souvenirs, etc. and their bathrooms are nice! We got the poppy seed, jalapeño & sausage & cheese, pulled pork, sausage on a stick, and Cajun Turkey kolaches. My favorite was the good old classic jalapeño, cheese & sausage kolache. Their bread is so sponge and soft. Sausage is flavorful and juicy. Least favorite was the Cajun Turkey kolache. It was basically just Turkey sandwhich meat seasoned with Cajun seasoning and some melted cheese. It was also like $5 for one? The pulled pork reminded me of an Asian pork bun. Poppy seed was interesting to eat - it was sweet instead of savory. Reminded me of a sweet sesame bun. I highly recommend coming here for the kolache if you're driving through the city. Get a kolache when you go through West! Slovacek follows in the West, Texas Czech tradition of churning out kolaches and peanut brittle, clean restrooms, and soda drinks! There's not only one kolache place in town, this is on the southbound 35 side. It's bigger, cleaner, and has more stuff than the competition across the highway. They have their own jerky shop, and a butcher serving up lots of sausages. You can get your own mix of meats from this gas station! They have their own merch, but none of it is too amazing or cute like Buc-ee's. A kolache is a piece of meat, typically a sausage, shoved inside a pastry roll, and baked. I went to the Czech Republic, but didn't see as kolaches as this place has. This town takes their kolaches seriously. I got a jalapeno cheese and sausage kolache, which was amazing. The staff was friendly and expedient. They were helpful with the kolaches, and have their own place among the merch to sit and eat, and just take it all in. It borders on hillybilly chic. They serve up gas- self-service. It's no problem getting in and out of here to get back on the highway in either direction. read more

We saw the the sign on the highway while driving down. We stopped and we were pleasantly surprised. Bakery, deli, convenience store, etc. I immediately ordered a few of the kolache. I first tried kolache two years ago and loved it. We got three different types: ham and cheese, jalapeño popper, and breakfast sausage and cheese. Still a huge fan of kolache. I didn't go to store by the gas station but went to the CHRISTMAS store - it was amazing!!! The walkway wasn't quite wheelchair accessible but the store mostly was and it was worth navigating! Holy cow! It had so many beautiful and unique objects that we could have spent days in there! We had been looking for a wind chime in just the right tones and there it was! Ordered a few different items to take home, the fruit kolaches with and without cream cheese Ground meat kolaches there is so much more to choose from. Plenty of workers here. Many hands behind the counter to help move the line along. But only 2 cashiers at the end of the counter and one is shared between the bakery and food orders. This gas station/bakery has a little bit of everything. It's kind of like a Buc-ees but it's not THAT great. It's across the hwy from the Czech Stop /Shell station that has been at exit 353 for longer than I can remember. I almost felt like a traitor stopping at this location bc I have faithfully stopped at Czech Stop for about 15 years but we were heading south & we thought we'd check this place out. It has a lot of random things to look at if you want to shop. Tons of college themed gifts, pjs, shirts, socks, etc. my niece likes the slushes. They only have two flavors but she loved hers. (Green apple & blue razz). The restrooms are smaller than Buc-ees but a good size. The water pressure was a trickle though. It wasn't just one faucet either. All of the faucets barely had any water pressure. So, once you found a soap dispenser that actually had soap it took a while to get your hands washed. I know from the price of everything in this store that they can afford to turn up the water. The paintings on the wall by the restroom are cute, yet overpriced. I don't see a lot of people buying overpriced wall art at gas stations . To me, this was Slovaceks trying to be like Buc-ees bc that's what they do. Paintings & photos are for sale all over the walls by the restrooms. As we stood in the long line to order kolaches I noticed only one young man was smiling & friendly. As we approached, we got lucky, we got the friendly guy! Gavin greeted us w a smile & asked how he could help us. Gavin was SO NICE! As we chose each item he asked if we'd like him to heat it up for us. When we got to the Nutella dessert my nieces were eyeing the 2 in front. We didn't want to be a pain but he overheard us & said he didn't mind. He pulled out the tray & grabbed them for us. His coworker, a heavy set Hispanic kid w longer hair asked why he was doing that (in an irritated voice) & Gavin said "because I'm getting the ones they wanted for them". Perfect example of good customer service versus lazy customer service. It's so rare that anyone these days wants to go the extra mile but Gavin did something extra just to be nice. It's the little things that mean a lot to people. It put a smile on the girls faces & in turn made me happy. Therefore, I'm writing a review mainly to say that GAVIN is a 5 STAR employee!!! I hope that he is acknowledged for going above & beyond. It wasn't just that he grabbed the kolaches we wanted. He greeted us as we walked up when the other employees just looked at the people in line & said "next". Gavin was friendly, he smiled! These employees were all young & you can tell which ones were miserable. I really appreciate being helped by someone who is kind. We will be back, even though the line was long & the prices were a bit overpriced simply bc Gavin's kindness left a lasting impression on us!!! Kindness goes a long way. Hopefully the water pressure in the restroom is resolved (or changed) eventually & the egg salad sandwich bread isn't hard next time. I wanted to try this place since I heard a few people talking about it. I guess I'm spoiled with Weikel's and thought Slovacek's would be similar. I ordered almost $30 of kolaches, boudin kobasneks, and a cinnamon roll. Unfortunately, everything tasted over cooked. The breading was hard, and had little to no taste. There's a reason why they can stand their kolaches in the box, because they are hard. The filling is over cooked, too. The boudin was like a sausage, hard and no light and fluffy like boudin should be. The store itself is cute, bathrooms are fairly clean, and even though they have limited parking, we parked on the side. I really wanted to like this place, but it's a hard NO for me as I had to throw away pretty much everything I bought at the bakery counter. read more

This was my first time taking the "Waco" route down to Texas A&M, and l had been itching to check out this place. A lot of cool things, including for most Texas and SEC colleges. My family likes to pull over here in the way to Dallas. I even got my parents hooked on the bakery at this place. Lots of snacks, drink options, and fun merch to buy here. The cashiers at the front of this place are also so very friendly. However, some of the bakery staff could use some help in the friendly department. They rush you through the line, even though you tell them that you want to see what else they have to offer down the bakery line. I felt like they guffawed at me when I told them that I wanted to look at their desserts on top of their breakfast options. I know they have to deal with tourists and undecided shoppers, but I was up front with telling the short blondish pink haired girl with glasses that I wanted to see the rest of the bakery case before I finality order, but I also did not want to cut in front of people who have been waiting longer for their items than I have. Maybe break your bakery line up into sections, so people can get what they need from the proper sections and don't feel rushed along and only block up the sections they are interested in, instead of one big long line. Overall this place is great. Bathrooms are very clean, food is good, and shopping is fun. Great place to stretch your legs. read more
