I stop here often on the way to Austin, Finally got pics. It is in the town of West which is before your get to Waco, when coming from Dallas. It's a great town with a Czech heritage, hence all the kolaches, sausage and cheese. I had the big boy jalapeño, sausage and cheese roll. They warm it up and your ready to hit the road. The staff is friendly and quick and the line moves; I did notice the BBQ section - I will try that next time. My roll was a pillow of soft bread covering the generous amounts of cheese and slices of jalapeño with a well seasoned sausage which had a snap to every bite. I thought I was done and noticed the coconut macaroons, saving that for tomorrow morning. I'm sure it will be great. I will be back ! read more

I have been here many times & have never been disappointed. This weekend our son was on a camping trip & I really wanted their kolaches. So we got in the car & made the 2 hour round trip drive, well worth it! Besides yummy stuff at the bakery there is always a wide variety of different fun items to see & but. Always wanted to stop in here, and now I have. They have a large selection of kolaches, both the sweet and savory kind. I got one of the big boy sausages that included garlic and cheese. It had good flavor, and was also quite filling. The strawberry and cream cheese kolache was delicious, as was the Nutella and peanut butter kolache. We got a few more things to go, including the monkey bread with apple and cream cheese...kind of like an apple fritter. Everything was delicious. A controversial review here! I have been hitting West's famous kolache store as long as I can remember. That is the standard, right? There's a new stop in town that tastes better, more items to spend money upon and, well, cleaner, newer, and more room! Slovacek has set a new standard!! Best tasting according to my kolache loving experienced taste buds. Fantastic flavor, spicy sausage, superior cheese, sweeter fruits, and perfectly browned pastry dough. Pick up extras to take to the office as these are the ones that will get you promoted, if not anointed as the big boss! There are all kinds of trinkets, gifts and other food offerings (for those odd ones that don't get kolaches in West). The Slovacek sausages are the best in Texas and you can get varieties to take home for later, if not now. If you saw me there, you might have noticed I was majorly chowing down. I'm glad I walked the aisles smiling at all of the cool items (especially the Aggie ones). It was my pre-kolache work out. (Smiling exercises the jaws and walking makes the belly sag more for more room.) The restrooms are huge and kept clean. The parking lot is paved for those rainy days. The kids will not want to leave, so bribe them with take home kolaches. You will love this place and become a West-Side West person like me. The folks there are the nicest ever, specially the older gentlemen that walks around in his overalls. GREAT GUY and friendly! The Baked goods are out of this world. The fresh BBQ great... a little on the pricy side but with that flavor explosion - who cares! This location is very clean, they have a lot of selection of garden decor. The t-Shirts and wearables selection are outstanding and at a decent price. Looking to pee? The restrooms here are simply far more supierior than the restrooms at the Czech Stop in every way. Also, they have everything here that the Czech Stop has and then some. Some say the pastiries at the Czech Stop are better, but I really can't tell the difference because, well, I don't eat a lot of pastries. I'm more of a beef jerky man myself. Stopped in for some Texas Sized Cinnamon Rolls for Mrs. Texas. Had to fuel up as well. They are charging $1.89 for regular when other places are charging $1.50. So when coming thru this area it's a requirement to Stop here and/or czech stop. Located across the hwy from each other it might depend for some which side of the hey your on, there are those who swear by one or the other! Now that I've been to both Slovacek's is my personal favorite. They have the better parking lot, I don't feel like I'm going to get hit by 3 cars while still in my car, and another 2 getting out of it. The store is bigger and it's easier to see what they have in the cases while you decide what you would like to get. My husband got a brisket item & enjoyed it, I think next time he'll ask for a side of more sauce. The rest of our order was a peach, and a cherry kolachis & those of us eating them enjoyed them. I visited this place since it was an Exxon gasoline station where I needed to fill up. This whole place looks fresh and new, and afterwards went inside to check it out. The store is not organized well with lots of shelves everywhere containing unique merchandise. You can spend a lot time looking around and probably find something you like. But for a convenience store it may be hard to get your loved ones out quickly. I did use the restroom where is was clean. They also sell food and saw a line to order kolaches. They also sell bbq "Kissing Pig Cafe" and fresh baked goods. The staff is nice and friendly. Next time will save room for kolaches. read more

Stopped here for gas, and quickly realized it was way too popular to just be a fuel & potty stop. Decided to go inside and check it out. The wood planks on the outside were also a drawl. As soon as you walk in the door there was a winding line. Always a good sign. Turns out this is a hotspot for kolaches. I absolutely would've loved to have waited, but it was 40 minutes from back to front. Learned this after chatting with the lucky persons currently placing their order. Happy to learn, there was a side counter serving hot plates. Having decided I needed to buy something from this establishment, I got a chopped beef sandwich with hot potato salad and macaroni & cheese. Everything was tasty. Only complaint that I have is that it seems I got shorted on the meat. The couple before me got double what I was served. I did take pictures of a multi meat sandwich being made. Now that was loaded. It's all good. I bought a strawberry poundcake to fill in the gap. I had to get down to Austin, but next time around, I'll make time to wait in the line for some of Slovacek's famous kolaches. Stopped here on our way to Austin. The barbecue brisket was nothing special, would've been better if it was warm. Didn't know that there was a microwave to be able to heat things up. This place has the meat! They have some really delicious sausage and I love the armadillo eggs and rattlesnake eggs!!! They are jalapeño peppers stuffed with cream cheese and wrapped with sausage and then wrapped with bacon!!!! The peppered bacon is to die for and they have the best milk. Oooh, I highly recommend you trying the bbq brisket sandwiches at the deli. Even the bake beans have brisket in them as well. Also, they are fairly priced and not much of a difference than the grocery store. If I lived close to them I would buy all my meat from them. I don't know what cows they got but all the steaks I've bought from them are tender. The service is just good as the meat. 4th of July the family came in and I decided to purchase the Tailgate Package for the celebration. Talking about the perfect choice---- We were late pick it up but Jackie kept it just as it should be. The food was incredible. Everything was at the right temperature and the flavor the best ever. The brisket was just lean but just enough fat to be flavorful and tender, pull pork was wonderful and the barbeque turkey is now one of my favorites. The sides were just the right amount and everyone took some home for later. We had 10 people. I will plan to repeat my order when the family and friends come. This is our favorite stop on the drive between Austin and Dallas. They have so many kolache options, including some I haven't seen anywhere else. My favorites are the cottage cheese and nutella kolaches. Yum! They also have a hot food counter, with BBQ plates and sandwiches. They make their own bread for the sandwiches. I had the pulled pork sandwich on our last stop and it was delicious. The bread and BBQ sauce were sweet and tasted great with the seasoned meat. They also have a dog park. Our pups love it; they get to run around while we eat snacks. Of course we share with them! We love this little highway stop; we can get everything here. Kolache's!!! And so much more! Slovacek's is just a fantastic place to get your grub on! Their kolache selection is awesome. I love the boudin kolache.. it's a little spicy with the sweet bread... I could eat bunches! (And generally do when I get the chance!) They have cookies, fudge, a meat Delhi, and an eclectic assortment of various merchandise to peruse. You just never really know what you'll find in here! And oh yeah... it's a gas station too... with all the normal selection of drinks and snacks. I spent a little time looking over their beer selections this time and I have to say I was impressed. With the walk in beer cave and all of the other coolers they really have a pretty nice selection of craft beer too. My mother-in-law was full-blood Czech, so my husband was delighted with this stop. The Meat Market was the first place we were drawn to, and the memories came rushing back. We bought Kielbasa that turned out to be the best we've had in a long time. We moved then to the long line at the bakery. I should say "two long lines at the bakery." One line, of course, was the customers waiting to be helped, and the other line was the array of baked goods from which we were expected to choose. How can you choose!?! We settled on Kolaches (sad to see no poppy seed kolaches). They offered to heat them for us, but since we were on the road, we opted to take them cool. This is a great spot to stop on during a road trip! I had seen that Slovaceks was actually on the top 100 bucket list places in Texas, so I knew I had to stop when passing by on my drive from Dallas to San Antonio! The bathrooms were clean, there is a good array of drinks and snacks, even icees! And the kolaches- amazing!! They warm them up from you and there are many flavors. I love cheddar jalapeño kolaches, and this was truly the best one I have ever had, because there was a great amount of cheese and jalapeño, and the bread was so soft and fluffy around it! New Year's Eve afternoon, we bundled up and ventured out into the wind and freezing drizzle to get some "fresh air." My husband was stationed and then lived in Alaska before he met me and feels comfortable on the roads in icy weather. We drove south about an hour to West, Texas, a Czech community to explore and have lunch. At Slovacek's on I-35, a favorite stop of ours, we found more entertainment and fewer travelers than usual. There was a camaraderie amongst the frozen and those thawing out and time to linger looking at kolaches, sausages, smoked meats and "armadillo eggs." Slovacek's was well staffed and welcoming; happy to see us. My husband was the first to find a mother lode of our fan favorite college stuff in a third of the store devoted to collegiate and professional team sports paraphernalia. The rest of the mercantile was either regular touristy or holiday sales and then there was a beautiful display of good quality Czech, Polish and German Nutcrackers and "Smokers" - incense burners - as well as lovely hand painted and decorated eggs and other ornaments. There were porcelain dolls from Czechoslovakia and all kinds of Christmas crafts and activities for children. "Santa - wear" for him and her was available at Slovacek's, too! We had a Czech BBQ lunch plate from the to go Kissing Pig Cafe (there's indoor seating), coffee and a kolache, and shopped a little. The weather was "frightful;" but the drive to Slovacek's was a nice diversion and I am still as enamored with their facilities, service, and bakery and meat market items as before! read more

Anyone who has driven the Dallas to Waco route has passed Slovacek's in West. With extra time on our hands, Hubby and I decided to see what the inviting billboards are all about. Sloovacek's reminded us of a hometown Bucee's... gift shop, food, drinks, clean restrooms, and a little of everything. The kolaches counter was huge with so many choices of big kolaches. The sausages looked great and after trying the kolaches, we will bring a cooler the next time. There is a BBQ counter with very reasonable plates and a few tables enjoy the food on the spot. Hubby and I brought home an assortment of savory and sweet kolaches. The fillings were very generous with either a full link of sausage of stuffed with meat. The Big Boy sausage was definitely a favorite. Next time you are driving between Dallas and Waco, take a rest break at Slovacek's, you will be glad you did. read more

Literally the best place on I-35 heading North. We make this place a must stop on our way to Dallas from Austin. It's the greatest gas station/rest stop/snack store. I know there are two Kolache places in West Texas, but I swear this one is the best. I've been to Czech Stop before (which is literally across 35 from Slovacek's) but it doesn't compare. Slovacek's is so clean and roomy you can walk around the store and not get bumped into. The restrooms here are comparable to Buc-ee's, very clean all the time and well maintained. The selection of kolaches here are outrageous. There is something for everyone. Usually there is 5 somethings everyone wants to get. The line for kolaches moves very quickly, it may seem long but they get you through the line quickly. But you don't feel rushed when you are picking your items. The staff here is extremely helpful and friendly. I've never had a bad experience here, even the one time the power went out. The have a super fancy nice dog park, where you can let your dog run and got potty. There is an space for air for your tires. They sell great metal art works, as well as beautiful art works inside. The kolaches all taste amazing, the food is delicious. The baked goods are just as amazing. The restrooms are just so clean and there is never a line. We've stop many times here. Every time there is a problem with people filling their cars and leaving them parked to go inside and stand in line while others coming in to get fuel. I have watched several people drive in go by the pumps and leave. What happened to common sense and manners? There should be signs that say NO UNATTENDED VEHICLES TOWED AT OWNERS EXPENSE. Have a few cars towed off and see how many park at the pump? At the very least, have an employee/security directing people away from the pumps so other customers can use them. Put a little customer service and manners back in life. read more
