    Whole flounder

What a gem!! SMX, a staple from ocracoke for decades is now in Holden Beach and is hitting it out of the park! Right on the inner coastal, great views and the food and ambiance is superb! You can't go wrong with anything you have. I had the whole flounder and it was delicious. Service was attentive, friendly and fast! Loved my experience and I'll be back many more times.

Burger with Blue Cheese crumbles. Very good !

The atmosphere is still great, which is apparently where all the effort now goes, because the food has clearly been left unsupervised. We placed a to-go order because we had our dog with us and were sitting downstairs. Simple enough, right? Not exactly. We spent the next hour and a half playing a fun little game called "Where Is Our Food?" Downstairs told us to check upstairs. Upstairs told us to check downstairs. Very efficient system if the goal is confusion and hunger. When the food finally arrived, we had seafood chowder, onion rings, a hot dog, and hamburgers. The seafood chowder was still good, so congratulations to the chowder for surviving whatever has happened here. The onion rings were cold, the hot dog bun had a green mold spot on it -- always a nice surprise -- and the hamburger was honestly impressive in the worst possible way. I've had better burgers from fast-food chains that at least admit they're serving frozen patties. This used to be a staple. Now it feels like one of those places that got popular enough to stop trying. I won't be back for the food. Maybe drinks, because thankfully no one had to cook those.

I don't know many restaurants that would happily take a call saying, "Our night just went sideways and we have 19 people to feed." Honestly, I probably would have been a little annoyed myself. But from the moment we arrived at Mermaids Island Grill, we were met with nothing but kindness and hospitality. The young ladies taking our order were friendly and welcoming, the bartenders kept the drinks flowing, and the servers delivered piping hot food with smiles on their faces. Every single person in our group loved their meal. With 19 people ordering from all over the menu--calamari, fried pickles, crab legs, grouper, fried shrimp, hushpuppies, and more--that's no small feat. What stood out most wasn't just the food (which was excellent), but the service. We were never rushed, despite arriving so close to closing, and the staff continued chatting and smiling with us as we left. Mermaids Island Grill completely turned our evening around. 10/10 for both the food and the hospitality. We'll definitely be back.

I had no idea she was trying to take someone else's order first. She could have politely just said let me get her first and then I'll come back to you. When she responded with "of course you would be the one to screw it up" it felt racist as I was the only person of color at my table. I ordered a blt with crispy bacon, she served it with an unprofessional attitude saying here's your blt with your crispy bacon. This was a very humiliating and embarrassing experience.

While we waited 25 minutes for the cheeseburger we were patient. Then it arrived and we were told there were no tomatoes because they were out; also apparently out of lettuce because we had spring mix on the burger; also told they were out of pickles for the burger but a sliced kosher dill was on the plate. The cheeseburgers were ordered medium and they both came out rare. Once they were returned to the table 20 minutes later, the server told us the whole plate had been prepared new - not true. The knife slices on both burgers where we had cut into them was still there - they had just been placed on new buns because the old buns were slightly soaked with blood. I didn't eat but half of mine as the other half tasted as though it had been cooked in stale, stagnant grill grease. When the check arrived there was no itemized bill, just a total on the table side point of sale system - which is okay but when I asked for a printed receipt, all I got was the total receipt. There was no way to check and make certain that two cheeseburgers w/curly fries and one ice tea and one water was correct at $31.00 (that was after the 10% member discount). I know it takes a bit to get settled in but honestly, it was just a hamburger - nothing new about that except the price. For the time we spent today, we could have driven to Five Guys and for the same price gotten a much better hamburger, fries and two drinks at a less price. Good luck.

Our last visit was decent, so we decided to give it another shot. However, tonight's experience was a complete disaster. We were seated promptly, but our server seemed annoyed that he had to wait on us and rushed us through the ordering process. He was rude and abrasive. We ordered flounder, and it was a complete disappointment. It arrived barely warm, tough, and dry. The most disheartening part was that most of it was nothing more than fried skin with little to no fish inside. We considered asking for a replacement, but our waiter never returned to our table again until he brought the check. He simply laid it on our table and said, "Pay up front." When I went to pay, the person behind the counter, who I assume was one of the owners, was lounging in his chair with his feet up, engrossed in his cell phone. He took the bill, rang it up, and said, "Tap or insert." Then he went back to his personal call. I understand that it's a family-owned restaurant, and the owners can do whatever they want. However, with the start of tourist season, they don't have to provide any customer service or care about the quality of their food. They'll still make a killing. While I know I won't be missed, I don't think I'll be returning anytime soon. There are too many other options available. See the photo for a visual representation of the poor quality of the food. It's definitely not worth $56 for two flounder fish specials.
