This place has such the potential to be great. The location and ambiance are awesome. The service was good and our waitress was kind and attentive. The food. Whole different story. My father ordered 1 pound of clams. They served him pocket clams that would not even qualify as an actual clam. I included a picture of the size of the clam shell for reference. Burgers were gross and overcooked. Tuna was decent and oysters were so stuffed with other ingredients you could not even taste the oyster. I suspect the oysters were also small in size and by stuffing them, it gives the appearance of more. 2/10 for food. read more

Just wanting to specify that this is the SMacnally's in Holden Beach... I can't say enough about smack Natalie's. I am so excited that they finally opened and we were able to boat in today for an amazing lunch and some really great entertainment. Amanda, our server was absolutely amazing. She made the best lemon drop tini, just remember to specify what vodka you want so they don't accidentally charge you for something you didn't want.. The outdoor ambience, and seating was expensive and all the umbrellas were up, shading us from the sun if we wanted it and letting us hang out if we didn't. read more

This was the most underwhelming experience I've had in my 31 years on this planet. The crab cakes are basically cold cat food. I'm pretty sure my cat eats better than this. The fries are useless, I don't think there's one in the basket cooked correctly. Mind you the crab cakes are listed for over $20. Well I want to start off by saying that in April we had a great experience here but tonight not so good. 1. We were seated pretty quickly but waited an hour before we got food. The waitress took 20 minutes until she took our order. Our bill was big but our food was mediocre. Grilled shrimp and scallops were rubbery like they had been sitting for a while. I know restaurants can have bad nights but after looking through these reviews this seems to be a pattern. The location is great on the ICW but they definitely need to improve on some things. Cute waterfront restaurant with large bar area w/seating and large dining area able to serve both small and large groups plus patio dining. Service was good and menu offerings seafood, fresh fish, chicken, burgers, wraps and salads. All items fairly priced as well. I had fresh catch sandwich which was delicious along with side of greens. Greens were fresh and enough for 2-3 shared servings! These were on the spicy and smoky side which i like. Others had shrimp&grits and wraps which they all enjoyed and were generous portions. Wraps very large. All had fresh mango margaritas with jalapeño-spiced rim and really liked the fresh flavors -the spice definitely made this drink a sipper. I felt this restaurant was as good or equal to Provisions, Inlet View and definitely superior to Sharkeys -so hope to go there again. read more

We dined at SMacnally's a year ago, and although the service was exceptional, our orders was a wee less than perfect. Fast forward to Memorial Day Weekend 2025! The restaurant and outer deck have been completely remodeled, and the food menu is new! The views from the restaurant to the Intracoastal Waterway - upon which it sits - across to the Island of Holden Beach, and the boats making way up or down the waterway provide the perfect spot for dining. The menu has completely changed. My plate was fried shrimp and oysters, their homemade cole slaw, and thinly sliced French fries. The seasoning was delightful, and especially the oysters were juicy and delicious, not overcooked. The oysters and shrimp were enjoyed with cocktail sauce. The only improvement that I would offer: their hush puppies need more flavour. The service was excellent. Our next trip to our cottage at Holden Beach will find us back at SMacnally's! read more

We meant to try this place last year when we were there and ended up going somewhere else. The food was absolutely wonderful portions were great atmosphere was great. We received our drinks quickly but after 45 minutes, no return of our waitress, and multiple tables around us that arrived much later got their food so was a bit upset. There were only two of us and this was a Tuesday with light business. We asked where our waitress was and she asked why? I explained we had been waiting so long. I'm pretty sure she went and put our order in. It took around an hour to get our side salad then food. The grilled wahoo was way overcooked. The founder was a very small serving. What a gem!! SMX, a staple from ocracoke for decades is now in Holden Beach and is hitting it out of the park! Right on the inner coastal, great views and the food and ambiance is superb! Slow wait for two cheese burgers and fries. food was terrible in the sense that the hamburgers were dry and overcooked, French fries soggy and tasted like old fry grease. Waitress was friendly (not her fault) $16.00 for a cheese burger of this quality is ridiculous. My wife and I could had gotten a better meal at Hardee's for half the money. My wife became sick about 30 minutes after eating with diarrhea most likely the food. We both agreed that we wouldn't be back. read more

Seafood was average but not special. The waitress we had acted like we were more of a bother than a guest. Not many people in the dining room. Maybe 4 tables when we arrived. The prices were too high for what we received. We have been home owners on the beach for over 25 years. I guess that we will continue to go to Calabash for our Southern Seafood dining. I'll start with the positives: 1.) the location, directly on the ICW, is great! 2.) our server was very apologetic and did her best to make the most of an otherwise poor dining experience. 3.) the shrimp platters we got were quite good. Now, to the negatives: 1.) we initially ordered two baskets of hush puppies. They were delivered to the wrong table. I watched the host take them from our server who was bringing them over, our server point directly at our table, and then the host deliver them to another table. When he realized the mistake (not a big deal--it happens), he then proceeded to blame it on the server not using table numbers. 2.) 10-15 minutes after placing our entree order, we were told that the kitchen was completely out of fish. We adjusted our order. When we asked about peel 'n' eat shrimp, we were told they were also out of those. We ended up ordering 5 fried shrimp platters, a veggie wrap with fries and a kids fried shrimp plate with fries. When our order came out, we were brought 5 fried shrimp platters with fries and the veggie wrap with pasta salad. We were told that they used all the shrimp on the platters and asked whether chicken strips would be okay for the kids meal. This was upsetting to our daughter, who was looking forward to shrimp, but with no other choice, we took them and gave our daughter shrimp from our platters. When the chicken strips came, they were brought out with sweet potato fries. Another table was told that they were out of fries, which presumably is why this substitution was made. 3.) At the end of our meal, we heard the host come over and comp at least some, if not all, of another party's meal. We were given no such offer. Needless to say, we won't soon be back. Which is a shame for a restaurant in such an excellent location. read more

Nice outside bar two minutes from the ferry dock. Mimosas were delicious and are served by the glass or pitcher. Appear to be fresh juices. Food was just ok. We tried the Chicken Cowgirl Sandwich (blacked chicken, bbq sauce, cheese, bacon on a toasted bun) and the Bacon Cheeseburger Wrap. The chicken sandwich was rather dry. The Hamburger Wrap tasted good and was a generous size. Thy both came with fries - sadly they were undercooked and lacked seasoning. The peel and eat shrimp were medium in size, served warm, but again, lacked seasoning. Excellent mimosas. We will be back for the drinks and atmosphere, but will probably go elsewhere to eat. read more

Apparently this place is in way over its head. I know it's a holiday weekend and we had a group of eleven. For starters, even with reservations, it took an inordinate time before drink orders were even taken, almost an hour for our food to be delivered and then everything was cold. Seated at two picnic tables.. mgt went ballistic when we repositioned them end to end so could all sit together as we were celebrating a birthday. Even though wait staff had no issues pushing several "4 tops"together so that another group could be seated with several children. Service, slow and overloaded. Kitchen, inadequate for the groups they were seating, overwhelmed. Nobody likes cold fish, cold greasy fries. We've been here many times visiting friends and family, back to when it was Betty's, then Lou Lou's and now Smacnally's. Always before, great food and service. Went there for dinner. The hush puppies were rock hard. The flounder was mainly skin and under cooked. Waitress was so busy as she had no help. She came over awhile later and asked how it was. I said horrible. She asked if we wanted to tell the manager and we said no, and just wanted the bill so we could go home. She went and got the manager. He came out in all his splendor and jewelry. He asked why we didn't say something to her earlier. I told him because his poor waitress was serving alone and couldn't get back to us that quick and that it wasn't her fault the food was bad. He started yelling at me saying to stop defending her. I asked him if she cooked the dinner and he stated no. I asked how it could be her fault, but he kept yelling. I told him his cook is awful and that because of him I'll never go back. What a jerk. read more

Our first visit was amazing! The new ownership and staff have done a great job updating & remodeling this restaurant. The food selection is fantastic to say the least. I had the shrimp platter, which was prepared perfectly and as delicious as it was, I couldn't finish it. The New England clam chowder was also fantastic. My wife had the crab cake platter, and she raved about it. But the best part of the experience was the staff. Great group of welcoming and friendly folks! Can't wait to get back! read more

Wife review: The view outside is lovely. They did a wonderful job with the design of the outdoor seating area. It's pretty nice! There is even an area where you can dock your boat on the ICW & walk up on a new ramp to get to the restaurant. There is also a separate area for happy hour and party drinkers who want to listen to local musicians and eat appetizers. Otherwise if you are there to eat a meal, head on over to the dock area for good food & a great view of the ICW. There is also inside enclosed dining. We didn't even go inside bc it was a beautiful night to enjoy the dining outside. The food-fish, fried okra, everything was wonderful! Our waiter was excellent. Also a very nice manager came out and greeted everyone at every table to ask about their food & drinks and how we liked it. They seem to really care about their customers! So far this is the best place to eat in Holden Beach! Nobody beats their view or food! read more

Food was not cooked properly. Waitress never followed up on bringing condiments. Bought the fresh catch, it was a small portion and cooked until it was dry. Most of the other food we ordered was not cooked properly. The well done hamburger was medium well. Just not a good experience, wont be coming back. Yikes. Trying to figure out where to start. We've NEVER had such terrible service. Ever. We had to complain TWICE to even ask for service after being sat. Never asked what we wanted for drinks (yes, we had half empty drinks from the inside bar). Never offered waters, nothing. We sat for over 2 hours with ONE visit from a waitress. Unfortunate, because there's a ton of potential in the location and setup. read more

We arrived by boat and had our dog with us. Miranda let us pick our table, and promptly bought out water for us and the dogs. The cocktails were tasty - specifically, the bourbon aperol cocktail and the mango jalapeño margarita. To say this was a disappointing meal is not overstating the evening. We had a reservation for a large group but they placed us at 2 separate picnic tables. Another large party came in 15 minutes after us, they moved tables for them, they ate and left by the time our food came!!!! Once the other family's tables were moved, we rotated our picnic tables so we could sit together. Our server/manager openly and harshly chastised our group for doing so. The server couldn't keep our drinks straight. It took around 45 minutes for our cold meals to arrive with a couple errors as well. This was not our first time here and while the service has been lack luster, the food has always been very good!!! Tonight, it was cold, some fish was over cooked, several errors.... We learned the management staff had changed and it showed!! After complaining, they did reduce our bill but it will be a while before we risk coming back. read more

So went here after waiting for the crowds to die down after grand opening. We went early so we would not have to wait. We were seated right away and our waitress was on point. We started with the shrimp and calamari appetizer it was fair. The calamari was typical fried small pieces served with a sauce that taste more like salsa. Request some horseradish sauce to make my own cocktail sauce. The BbG shrimp was ok a bit over cooked and pretty much just dipped in BBQ sauce. Dinner was the cowboy burger hubby ordered Med and it was cooked medium it was ok typical burger with onion rings, cheddar cheese and BbQ sauce he ordered the onion rings which truly were the highlight of dinner...lol. I ordered the Mango shrimp wrap. It was again ok rather dry very little flavors. All they need to do is add a side of sauce or add more sauce to the wrap it would probley be really good maybe a sweet Thai chili sauce or a mango sweet mango chili sauce. However the way it was served was very disappointing. The pasta salad was warm and was not appetizing at all took one bite and it was awful. I Assumed it was going to be a cold pasta salad and it was warm..so was not going to chance it. So the total for 2 with 1 beer and 1 glass of wine came to around 76.00. Not worth it...Menu is limited wine list is limited.. only good thing is Music and scenery and the service was on point. They really just need to up the ante a bit and they might be better. read more
