    Front entry: Almost missed it.

This was it, for me the ideal burger. Nothing fancy, just champagne mustard, tasty beef and an excellent gluten free bun. Will be back and wish there was a location in Orlando. Two thumbs up!

It would be tough not to have a great time at burger place when the staff are such funny, welcoming, and lovely individuals. Despite the long line, they cracked jokes with us and really warmed our spirits as soon as we got to the front of the line. It also helps that the old fashioned was pretty dang strong! The burger was good, not the best burger I've ever had, but definitely good. It was really the vibe that elevated the experience, with a comfy diner feeling and friendly faces all around.

Small Cheval was pretty marginal for me. The burger was fine but nothing special, didn't stand out from other burger spots in the city. The outdoor seating was nice during the summer. It's not a bad option if you're nearby and craving a burger, but I wouldn't go out of my way for it. There are better burger spots in Chicago

Came here for a late night snack and were so pleased with the food! I tried the cheese burger and ordered fries too! You order at the counter and then they give you a buzzer for when you can pick it up. It didn't take long at all and we ate on their picnic tables. The burger was so juicy and good! I loved the fries too and would come here again and again. Definitely loved this place and would recommend!

Stunning!!! This place was recommended to us by a local friend and so glad we stopped by! Just a warning though its outdoor seating only! But not an issue as we managed to get a table in the shade. We got their classic cheese burgers and fries and of course we had to get a chocolate shake. If I was a Chicago local I would be coming here all the time! Great burger and packed with flavor and decent portion! The shake was absolutely to die for! Super rich and delicious! Great restaurant and would definitely come back if I was in the area!

I'm back - much better - really like the burger. Its juicy , tasty with the right garnishing of lettuce and tomatoes. But I especially like the cookies and cream milk shake. It's so so good - I was wondering how little milk they added and just blended the ice cream. I believe my derrière grew afterwards. A testament to the high caloric intake and how delicious it was.

Ambiance - cute hidden spot in old town, only offers outdoor seating, love the string lights they put up Service - only took 5 min from ordering to receiving my order, they have an automatic surcharge added to your bill Food - highly recommend dipping fries with the truffle aioli, burgers were juicy

Came to Small Cheval - Old Town for lunch on a Thursday. It wasn't overly busy so I was able to order on the spot. Was delicious and the fries were truly golden! Highly recommended!

Burgers are good but this place is definitely overhyped. Bought the cheese sauce as an extra and sauce is also very mid. Fries were also not that good. I do love that it's outdoor seating so it is a great place for summer. Would probably not come back for food, maybe only to try their milkshake. Service was quick, we did not have to wait long for food.

This was my second time here and it hit just as much as the first. The burgers aren't the best in the city but they are reliably delicious burgers. The golden fries are perfectly crispy and come with a side sauce which is so good. There is only outdoor seating, partially covered, so good in better weather.

Solid burger but really recommend the fries! Most were the "perfect" fry: crispy outside, soft inside. Service was good and food didn't take long to come out. Plenty of tables, good for groups.

The small is super small and has limited which is frustrating because it gets super busy. The cashier is nice but it's more of a fast food place with quick turnaround. The burger is super good though and the fries or burger with the truffle sauce is the best and I highly recommend it. We also got the espresso martini classic shake and it was the best and I highly recommend that as well. I would definitely for back for the fries and truffle sauce and the shake.

My sister has been raving. I'm dying to try, but not seeing a gluten free bun option. Do you do lettuce wraps for your burgers?

    Yes they do!

    Is this restaurant dog friendly?

Yes, dogs are welcomed on the patio

Is the party cooked in pork grease just like au chevel?

We cook all of our fries in beef fat and season our griddle with beef fat. We cook pork bacon on the same griddle we cook our burgers, though on a separate section. There is, however, still the possibility of cross contamination. Please continue to… Read more

I had the single cheeseburger and it lived up to the hype. I learned that the single burger is actually a double and the double is actually a triple. I was recommended to add an egg and bacon to the burger and I'm glad I did. Each bite was a glorious burst of flavor. The bacon is epic. Thick juicy slices. The cheeseburger was perfect. I didn't need additional condiments and that never happens for me. The fries were good too and came with a delicious aioli. For beverages, I loved my Arnold Palmer. I also tried a cocktail--the Long Island Iced Coffee. It was pretty strong. I added a shot of bourbon cream to it and that sweetened it up and made it perfect for me. Unfortunately, I didn't have room for dessert. Cute restaurant. Cozy inside. They have an outdoor patio as well. If you don't have a reservation, be prepared to wait. Excellent food. Excellent service. Jennifer took great care of me and made great suggestions. It's pricy but it's worth it.

The process of getting seated through a busy period, and the service throughout was excellent. But as often happens with me, the food didn't live up to the hype. My wife and I were picking up my brother and his son from O'Hare at around 10 am on a Saturday. We had dinner plans with our uncle, but had not planned anything in between. The flight came in on time, and once confirmed we all had the time, my brother suggested going to Chicago to try Au Cheval. He knew about their location LV, but none of us had tried their original location in Chicago. So we drove into Chicago, arriving at the restaurant at 11 (it opens at 10am). There was a check-in stand set-up outside, where someone was taking names/phone numbers to put on the waiting list. We were quoted a 45 minute wait, and got the text to hurry back after about 30 minutes. There was a line to put your name down on the list, so we skipped that by going right in. The friendly hostess seated us in a booth, with a nice view of the kitchen where they were making the burgers in mass. The waitress explained that a single burger meant two patties (each patty is 4 oz, so basically a half pound burger), and a double meaning three. My brother and his son both ordered a double cheeseburger ($19.99 each), and I got a single with added sunny side up egg ($21.48). I wanted my wife to be able to take a bite, so asked for everything to be on the side (sauce, dill pickle slices, and grilled onion bits). We also ordered french fries ($8.99), cooked in duck fat. In the meanwhile, followed a fellow yelpers suggestion and got two Allagash Whites ($9 each) for me and my nephew. It's a really good beer that I've had many times during happy hour, and goes great with rich, greasy food. My wife got something else: the General Janes Chicken, which is their version of Korean Fried Chicken ($24.98). She enjoyed it (the coating was still crispy, and the sauce had that pronounced kochujang flavor that we like). Everything is a la carte here (except for the complementary pickle spear with burgers), so she shared in the ordered fries. Food came out together and was served hot. There is a mandatory 3.25% surcharge, and payment is taken at the table. As mentioned, service was excellent throughout. To be honest, I'm not the right person to judge a burger like this (I like it backyard style, with a lot of lettuce, tomato, onion, and pickles...and mayo/ketchup). But my brother and nephew are (they have tried many, many burgers all across the world, and don't like too much toppings on their burger), and they said the burger was just OK for them. I liked the frites (cooked in duck fat)...very light in color, but still crispy on the outside. However, nobody else really ate them, saying they weren't great. It's unusual for me to be the least critical after dining, but I'm sure it had something to do with the observation that I didn't have to pay for it (since it was my brother's treat).
