I've been wanting to try Small Cheval for a minute, so since I was already nearby and hungry we decided to stop in. The place was actually pretty empty when we got there, which was nice honestly. Chill atmosphere, good music, good energy... pretty much what you'd expect around Wrigleyville. The staff was super friendly right away too. I ordered the signature double cheeseburger with the golden fries and garlic aioli. Food came out really fast. The fries were SUPER hot, which for me is always a good sign. Crispy outside, soft inside, and the garlic aioli made them even better. But the burger was the star for sure. The meat was really tender and juicy with that perfect smashed burger edge where it gets a little crispy around the outside. You could actually taste the seasoning in the beef instead of it just tasting greasy. The cheese was melted perfectly into the patties and mixed so well with the grilled onions and pickles. The dijonnaise added this creamy tangy flavor that tied everything together without overpowering the burger. Overall just a really solid burger spot. Glad I finally tried it. read more

I have been a fan of Au Cheval for a while and was happy at the thought of Small Cheval opening down the street from Alamo Drafthouse, thinking it would be great place to stop for dinner before a movie. I was happy to see that there was a full bar and that they did serve prosecco, so that was a good start. You order at the counter for the food and adult beverages are ordered from the bar. I thought the space was on the small side, but after reading reviews from folks who have been to other locations, this is considered a large space. The Queen and I ordered our burgers and got fries, which came to a total of $48 for some reason. I was not looking at the menu, just ordering like I usually do as I was not expecting to pay almost $50 for burger and fries. The food was hot and good, but truth be told, me and The Queen said next time we will hit Billy Goats as that is good value and we love those burgers. For the overall quality, the taste did not justify the price. The bartender was really nice. As it was my first time at this location, I didn't know that there was a station where you could get water. I asked the bartender for two glasses of water and he got them with no questions asked. It wasn't until I asked for the water that I saw the sign at the station about water. I apologized to the bartender but he was super sweet about the whole thing, so I tipped him well. We were in the area and was looking for a late evening fast option for food. Even though this is not one of my favorite Cheval's we thought we would give it another try. Since we were last here they changed and no longer has table service. You order at the counter and handed a buzzer . Food was ready relatively quick. They do not offer ketchup in bottles anymore, just packets. The burger was good, but the bun was not fresh. Interestingly I had the same thoughts 2 years ago!! We also had fries, they were very salty and the garlic aioli is in a smaller container that previously. I read recently that according to something (Yelp, I think) Au Cheval (the OG) has the second best burger in the US. This is one of the reasons it is always bustling, and unless you're going alone and lucky enough to snag a bar seat, a long wait is in your future. Though, I heard in passing that Small Cheval is just as good, only without the wait. "I'll be the judge of that!" I thought, and stopped in. The vibe is bright, and reminds me of the Original. It was surprisingly large inside, to the point where I was thinking "this is 'small'?!" It rhymes though! I took a seat and ordered a Signature Double Cheeseburger with fries, and the food came out in less than five minutes. Let's start with the fries: I love that as opposed to Big Cheval, the portions is appropriate for one person. These were hot and fresh out of the fryer (no lamps), The fries were also cooked and seasoned to heavenly perfection. Pleasant aioli too. Now let's talk about the burger... There is an element at the original location that I can only describe as "Gluttonousness". You bite into the thing and can just tell "this is as unhealthy as it is real!" The Small Cheval burger was delicious on its own, but still stands in the shadows of its parent. Credit where credit is due: the beef was high quality and seasoned - I'd even say it was heavy-handed in the salt. One more thing: here, a double is two patties, unlike the originals double meaning three! Finally, even with a Wrigleyville location, the prices are very reasonable and amount to a great value. Thus, while there isn't as much "wow!" factor as the original, Small Cheval still delivers an extremely respectable burger, that while not at the level of the OG is a good homage to its genesis. read more

We came here for dinner on a whim (and luckily not on a Cubs game night) and had a great experience. On a hot summer day, they had had great air conditioning, clean + quiet space, and no line. We sat towards the back of the first floor where they have 1 tv (with baseball on) with regular seating instead of just high tops and stools. (Which is way better for the kiddos.) The staff was friendly and helpful, per usual. The food was great, the same quality we expect from Small Cheval - the cheeseburger, golden fries, chocolate shake, and strawberry shake is our normal order and it was all quickly gobbled. We were intrigued by the weekly shake (birthday cake shake) but stuck with our normal order. The only hold up was that it seems to get a ton of delivery orders so I thought our food would come out super fast and it took a normal amount of time. If I wanted quick service and not table service I would have went to one of the fast food restaurants in the neighborhood. Alright - it's time we address the elephant in the room. We've all heard the rumors that small cheval has gone downhill since expanding. I'm sure if that's true OR if it's just that so many other amazing burger places have opened up more recently, but the meal we had at this location wasn't **quite** as fantastic as usual. The burgers just weren't as mouthwateringly delicious as they usually are. They also weren't served super hot - which considering how slow this place was on this particular day, that's not ok. I was pleasantly surprised to see that this Wrigleyville location has a full bar unlike other locations - I'm used to doing a boozy shake as the primary option, usually! And for the biggest surprise of all... this place is gigantic! Cheval had been on my list of places to try since I don't know how long. So I had the opportunity to try it when I was doing a Bar Crawl. I knew I wouldn't get the chance to try it again so I gave it a try. It was late and we got there right as they closed and I really hate to do that but I didn't know what else I could grab to eat. Even though I came in close to close the staff was very nice and friendly. I ordered a Double Cheeseburger with No Onions or Pickles and fries. They told us about 15-20 mins. I ate most of my fries on the way home which were okay not anything to write home about but the burger was everything especially the sauce. One of my burgers was medium and the other was well done. I would have preferred them both be well done and my friend forgot to mention to me that Cheval cooks their burgers medium unless asked. Overall, I think that the food was good, Pricing was okay, and the service was excellent and would I be back. I am so happy that Small Cheval has made their debut in Wrigleyville. I have loved their Old Town and Wicker Park location so it is nice to have one further North. This location is massive in comparison to the other two I have been to. They have enough seating that could easily accommodate large crowds of people during a busy Cubs season. During my visit I was able to easily find a seat at the bar but I had a lot of options to sit at a table. You seat yourself and use the QR code at the table to order your food. That helped to keep things moving quickly. If you seat at the bar the bartender can also take your order. I liked that you were able to get your drinks quicker. They have a ton of TVs for the folks that want to stay up-to-date on the various games taking place. I ordered the single cheeseburger along with fries to keep things simple. The restaurant was busy so the food took a little longer to come out but they brought out several orders at the same time so I assume a lot of it is made in larger batches. The burger was delicious but it gave very much White Castle patty size. The burger felt a little paper thin and it was mostly bun. I know Small Cheval is known to pricey since you buy everything à la carte but the burger felt thinner. They did give a fair amount of fries so it helped to make up for the thin burger. I had never tried and Au Cheval burger even after all the people I heard raving about it. The Small Cheval Wrigleyville spot on Clark St. is large and modern with tables and all stools throughout. I love what they did with the space -- really fun vintage diner vibes downstairs, and then the upper level has a huge bar and outdoor patio for when the weathers nice! Ordering takes place on an app, but the 'servers' who are more of food runners were extremely friendly and still checked on us regularly which was nice. Everything was easy to use and figure out! The burger is delicious and flavorful. Definitely a stripped down version from the iconic Au Cheval, but a tasty burger nonetheless. I also ordered a root beer float -- so yummy! And they give you the remaining bottle of root beer to top your float off with or drink alongside. Since it is more of an informal dining experience, you can be in and out pretty quick, making it a great spot to go pre-game for a quick bite. With the proximity to Wrigley though, the prices are pretty steep. Overall, solid experience! read more

Au Chevals smaller brother, this is a great alternative to the busier more expensive brother. For ten bucks, it's a great burger that's a good middle ground between a greasy fast food and top tier gourmet burger. So if you're looking for a slightly elevated experience but still "fast" come here for a quick bite. Or hang out for a casual date. However, my brother ordered a cheese burger with only onions added to it and nothing else. He gets his first burger no onions, no pickles on its receipt on the box. Somehow still has pickles on it. Then he asked for it to remade since he hates pickles. Comes out again but now still no onion, no pickle, a large amount of sauce. Asked for it to be remade again, now has onion, however it's the first burger with pickles taken off so you can still taste them. The bottom bun was even semi-green from the pickles juice. For the price of the burger you would expect it to not be difficult to order a cheese burger with only onions. read more
