I've been buying cupcakes and cakes from SmallCakes for a couple of years now, and they have never disappointed me. I honestly don't understand why this place has fewer stars because they definitely deserve more! The girl who helped us at the counter was very sweet and welcoming. The shop decor is just out of a Barbie movie. Recently, my husband and I enjoyed three of their cupcakes caramel, strawberry, and pink sugar for his birthday, and we absolutely devoured them. Caramel was our favorite followed by strawberry. I walked and was greeted by 2 staff members. I asked the lady that was helping me which ones were their best sellers but she wasn't sure. The place was empty. I'm not sure if it gets too much foot traffic. The cupcake store is next to a Mexican restaurant. I ordered 2 cupcakes to go. A cookies and cream and a salted Carmel pumpkin one. Both were very moist and not overly sweet. My daughter said hers was good. I liked the pumpkin one but thought that it had way too much icing. Last month my daughter turned 6 years old. We reached out to Small Cakes about doing another cake for us because they did a pretty good job on her 5th birthday cake. I repeatedly called them asking if they received our email about an order. I was told yes. Multiple times. I was told they would be in touch with the individual who prices each order. When I didn't receive an email back from this individual I called again and asked about our order. They informed me that they received it and would get back to me. Because it was close to the day and they have a certain amount a days the order has to be in I wanted to make sure things were getting to who they needed to get to. I asked if we would have something to pick up the day of the party, I was told yes. I was a little worried but this is about how things went the prior year and we had a cake. We get to Sunday my husband went to pick up my daughter's miraculous ladybug cake with my daughter and there's nothing!!! No cake, no cup cakes. They said they never confirmed the order. Giving a price means the order is confirmed. I totally understand that policy, if I was told that to begin with no problem. If I missed it on the website, that's my fault. But when you tell someone they will most definitely have something to pick up Sunday the day of the party, they're going to believe it. The worst part about this, is when my husband put the person in the store on the phone she was laughing. It was very unprofessional, I let her know that it wasn't funny at all. We ordered a cake and cupcakes because of the experience we had the prior year. Now I will never order anything from them . They offered us cupcakes in the case for purchase. Didn't try to fix the situation at all or offer any empathy. The person in store was not a professional and whoever keeps up with the emails and answers the phone lack professionalism as well. It's a sad situation because they did such a great job the year before and as a Head Coach for UMKC I always pass along good experiences to other coaches and programs in the community. Ordered 6 cupcakes for a birthday celebration and was very disappointed. When I picked up the cupcakes, I asked if they had been baked fresh to order that day (7/26/23). They responded yes. Unfortunately, the cupcakes didn't taste freshly baked. I will admit they did look nice, but the frosting is heavy and doesn't taste good. Also, the strawberry cupcake doesn't actually have strawberry slices as advertised on the website. As you can see in my photo, it's just a grocery store standard cupcake with sprinkles. They forgot to make my specialty cake that I had already paid for! I ordered a specialty cake several weeks in advance, and had paid for it a couple weeks before pick up. I called two days out to confirm. When we showed up at the pre-arranged pick up day and time, they did not have my cake. They said it was "in the system" but there was no cake. We were refunded, but we were scrambling as we had one hour before the party to find a replacement cake. I cannot imagine if this had been a wedding cake. I waited three days to post this review, in hopes management would at least reach out to me to apologize but I haven't heard a peep from them. I stopped in here about a week ago to kill a sweet tooth craving that was so bad it was keeping my mind off of anything else. I cannot say enough good things about this cake shop. I live in Maryland. My son recently took a job in Kansas City. He turned 50 on Valentine's Day. Such a special Day! I was lucky to work with the owner, Allyson, who had great ideas. She came up with an idea that was outstanding, calling people at his place of business to get Logos to decorate the cake!! I've never been to the Metcalf store and this is my first time to this one in Olathe. I had to ask if they accepted cards because they did not have the symbols in the window. I never assume. It is funny to see all the furniture of a store before it. It was some kind of ice cream store and I went once and didn't like it. Was happy to see a cupcake store in it's place. I have always enjoyed the idea of cupcakes. A personal cake just for me, yum. I am more for the cake than the icing. So once again like cupcake a la mode, I was weary when I stepped in and saw the wonderful display of different flavor icings and just vanilla and chocolate cake. I was told there was also red velvet (which I got, but I'm not a red velvet fan) and carrot cake (which was not available). Also that the cakes were made every morning (I was there around 7pm). When I come to a counter display of cupcakes I just pick as many as sounds good. I'm going to spend money. Was told $3/cake. Seems to be the standard now. Or $36/doz (12x3, go figure). I ended up getting six. three placed in two small plain white boxes. Which by the time I got home were all over the place. The cakes were moist. Maybe too moist as the paper came off and my cake crumbled. Whoa...cakies. It happened to all of them. I ended up grabbing a fork to eat my cakes. Some were ok, others really good, but nothing wow. The frosting most times was too overwhelming and got scrapped off and I was stuck with plain cakes. Cupcake places take note, not everyone loves frosting, make a great base foundation. So I took a little trip for my birthday weekend and toward the end, realized I never got any cake. So I looked for a cupcake place and gave this place a shot. I am spoiled when it comes to red velvet by my favorite cupcake place, but I try them wherever I go and these were good - sill not as good as my favorite place, but so good. The lemon drop is not something I normally get but yum. The salted caramel was a surprise as the frosting was a large dollop of a really soft caramel which was delicious - I just wish there had been some chocolate in the frosting - I honestly didn't care for the broken pretzels on the top - in the frosting and with the cupcake - they were a little soggy, but I get the touch (I think it would have been more enjoyable if it was like pretzel crumbs that the caramel was dipped into. And lastly was the one that was like a hostess cupcake - oh my goodness - I have always been disappointed with these and honestly, this was the best version of this I have ever had - I wished I had picked up all four that I purchased as these and am hopeful to get more the next time I'm in KC. Having lived in DC, these were on par with Georgetown Cupcakes and Red Velvet and actually prettier. I did not get to eat any as treats for daycare but very impressed. I've tried 3 different cupcakes from here. They satisfied my sweet tooth but the icing is soooooo thick and heavy that I end up scraping most of it off. The vanilla cupcake w pink icing was not edible for me. The buttercream (?) icing was so thick and nasty and was kinda waxy-like. Tasted like a crayon. That's the best way I feel I can describe it. The red velvet was ok. It was topped with cream cheese icing. I took a small piece of cake from one side and that caused it to fall right over from being so top-heavy. I couldn't get it to sit back upright after that. The carrot cake was also okay. It also had cream cheese icing. These cakes were good. Smallcakes was my first foray into the world of specialty cupcakes. I grabbed my mom and we hauled ourselves out from Blue Springs to have a bite of what we'd been told were "magically delicious cupcakes." When we stepped in, we were a little discouraged. It was a depressing little shop, and the store was completely empty. We waited around a few minutes, surveying the yummy looking flavors. Finally, a man came from the back to ask us what we wanted. He was rude, and brisk, clearly wanting us to leave so he could get back to whatever was going on in the back. We didn't let us discourage us. We were told these were the "best cupcakes," in town, and we were determined to reach nirvana. We ordered a dozen cupcakes and drove back across stateline to devour the goodies with our family. Man, was that a disappointing moment. There is nothing worse than trekking out for a delicious treasure, only to learn that we could've gotten the same satisfaction at Hy-Vee. The icing was too sweet, and the texture was grainy. The cake was dry and depressing. The service sucked, and the cake was like giving a child a lollipop, only for him to discover it was flavored like dirt. Beautiful, but yucky. I am really not the person who should review dessert places. I am not a huge fan of sweets in general and really not a huge fan of cake. I have been told about this salty sweet cupcake they have here and I have been curious about it for a long time. Every time I stop in it is either not the right day or they are sold out. I decided to give it a try again tonight being I was out and again no luck. I would think they would start making more being they are always sold out, but apparently not. Usually I just leave because, I am not a huge cake fan. Tonight I decided to try some. One of the reasons I am not a huge cake fan is frosting. I don't get it. Way too much sugar for me. All of these cupcake places boast cream cheese frostings, but they still taste like a bunch of sugar to me. Once the frosting was removed, the cupcakes were nice and moist. I didn't think they had a ton of flavor. The cupcakes seem a little expensive to me. Over $7 for two cupcakes. Guessing they are $3.50 a piece plus tax. Maybe it is just me and not being a cake fan and this place is better left to the diehard dessert lovers, but I at least had to give it a try. I was having a craving for something sweet and decided to stop by Smallcakes. The employees at Smallcakes are always extremely helpful and will answer any questions you have. I got a hostess cupcake, carrot cake, French toast, chocolate cupcake w/ pink frosting, lemon cupcake and the special cupcake of the day. For 6 cupcakes it came to $19.52. Delicious and scrumptious are just two adjectives from a very long list that I use when describing the cupcakes at Smallcakes to others. I've yet to taste a cupcake that didn't instantly become a favorite. The flavor pairings are always spot on. Jeff is a master baker in my opinion (despite forgetting the pumpkin that one time) and successfully breaks away from the standard vanilla or chocolate base flavors by offering favorites like French toast, pumpkin or even a classic red velvet. The cake portion is always moist and oh, so flavorful. The frosting....yum, yum, yum...never too sweet, always perfect and just the right amount so that you get a little cake and a little frosting in every bite. Unless you're a top gobbler like me and break off the bottom to eat first (which is okay because remember, the cake portion is fabulous all on its own). The cost of $3 per cake is very reasonable. Special buy #, get # free offers are like winning the lottery. The hard part is trying to decide just which flavors to get...and if you're going to share. This is my favorite cupcake bakery! I have tried several of their wonderful flavors including my favorite, the Red Velvet, as well as Pink Vanilla and the Lemon. All were absolutely delicious! Parking there on the weekends is at a premium, but well worth the walk. When I hold dinner parties, I serve their cupcakes and everyone raves about them.
