Came here to check out this popular cupcake shop. I have to say the atmosphere and options at Small cakes were really nice. There are also gluten free options. We ordered the Red Velvet cupcake as well as the chocolate creme and both were pretty decent. I do think for the price and the amount of sugar in each cupcake it is not really worth going here again. I think it was nice to try once, but we were not able to finish the cupcakes and probably will not visit again. Overall, it is nice to check out once if you are feeling a sweet tooth. read more

I was looking up a place to get a tiny cake that my dog can eat for her birthday and found that Smallcakes makes individual mini "pupcakes" -- so adorable. They are carrot cake mini cupcakes with peanut butter frosting and a tiny dog bone biscuit on top. They come in separate containers with lids. I preordered and paid online the day before. I've visited Small cakes twice now. Each time getting different cupcakes. The first time I had the Boston Cream cupcake, the second time I had the German Chocolate cake. Each cupcake was good in their own way. I also bought my son a Peanut Butter Cupcake, and he liked it. My girlfriend bought cupcakes for her entire family and they all raved over them. To me I thought they were delicious, I think the frosting to cake ratio is a little high, making it difficult to eat... but honestly if you don't get messy eating a cupcake, did you really enjoy it? The shop is kind of small. I've only looked into the main area, where you purchase the cupcakes. I think there's a back area with seating, but honestly I didn't look because we were ordering to go, but I did see what appeared to be seating there. The front area is a little cramped. Each time I went there was only one us in the store ordering. However, I have the feeling that it could get crowded in there Both times I went it was the same employee that served us. The best Cupcakes in America (so far as I have tasted) are at '83 Sweets in Lucasville, Ohio; it is the standard because the icing on the cupcakes do not overpower the cake part below; everything there is balanced; i swear they are worth ordering and being shipped; they are that good! With this said, most cupcakes are too top-heavy; this means that the icing on top is way too sugary and puts the sugar-to-cake-taste ratio too high! (although all cupcakes are good). I asked about the best cupcake here at Smallcakes by the kind blonde lady at the front; some of the young teenage customers said "red velvet" (which is perhaps my favorite cake, or at least, cupcake, of all time). But the shop lady said the Italian Wedding Cake is #1. So I tried it. It is like most cupcakes, too top-heavy with sugar. On the icing was some pearl hard/candy/sugar-type topping which added to the aesthetic; it was pleasing to the eye. I was told the peanut butter [?chocolate?] cupcakes are very good also. I expect any cupcake here to be top-heavy sugary just like most cupcakeries / bakeries around the U.S. make them. Final review note: if I am ever back in St. Charles, I would come back here to have another cupcake because, hey, CUPCAKES RULE and because I do respect small business owners and wish them success; they put their hearts and souls into their businesses. Came in on a Sunday afternoon with my boyfriend. We were walking around St. Charles because we thought it looked so cozy. I love gourmet cupcakes, so I was ecstatic to see a cupcake shop! Smallcakes is a lovely little shop decorated all over with pink and chalkboard signs. The tables are designed to look like barrels with a tabletop, and the chairs are rather uncomfortable--they were metal barrel-like seats. We walked in through the back and the storefront was arranged nonsensically. There is really only room for two people to stand in front of the cupcake display. It kind of curves toward the window, making it extremely difficult for more than two to browse the cupcakes. I felt like I was being pushed against the glass entrance because there were three children and two adults in front of me. I asked the woman behind the counter what the most popular cupcake was, and she recommended the "Caramel Crunch". So I opted to purchase one to share with my boyfriend! The cupcakes are $3.25 a piece and I believe $36 for a dozen. We ate the cupcake in the store and it really was nothing great. The chocolate cake tasted nothing better than something store bought or made from a box. And the caramel topper was a weird consistency that was too too sweet. Enjoyed my first trip to Smallcakes in St. Charles. The employee on duty was extremely friendly, explained all of the different cupcakes to me- and all of them were beautiful and looked delicious. So this place really disappoints me. I LOVE cupcakes, and I really love the super sweet tangy cream cheese frosting they use, but their regular cupcakes (IMO) are ho hum. On the one hand, the cupcake was probably the most not dry (aka moisssssssst, ugh) cupcake I've ever had and there was a good amount of frosting on it (probably too much for most, which is perfect for me). On the other hand, the cupcake didn't really taste super chocolatey and the frosting was really airy and almondy...thing is, when I get a chocolate cupcake with buttercream frosting I'm looking for a big CHOCOLATE taste and thick yummy buttercream. I also got a small dog cupcake for my corgi. I was very pleased with the quality of the cupcakes. They weren't too sweet and had the right frosting-to-cupcake ratio (this is CRUCIAL). My dog loved the pupcake, or at least, I think he did since he practically inhaled it. Cupcakes are around $3.50 a piece. One is more than enough to share with your sweetie or eat by yourself while binge watching bad TV on Netflix. Your secret is safe with me. read more

Cupcakes are big and messy. Just the way they should be. Forks are hightly recommended. (I wonder if we can bring in some milk?) I brought my two girls, 9 and 5, and they both loved their cupcakes. One got the Chocoholic. Truth be told, it was top heavy and it kept toppling over. But it gave her more reason to eat it quicker. The other one got the Boston Cream. We love smallcakes. They may be a tad pricy compared to other places, but I feel it's worth it. When we like to treat ourselves we come here. The cakes are always consistent, fresh and taste great. This place is absolutely lovely. The actual cake of the cupcakes are really moist. The frosting is really good as well no sugar bits but very sweet. The presentation of the cupcakes are adorable if you need some added cute in your life grab one of these cupcakes. The employees are really friendly and care about their customers. Having had my share of cupcakes from downtown Chicago to St. Charles, I have to say that these are the best! I used to be a die hard fan of Sprinkles, because I loved the rotating flavors and the size, but Small Cakes has them beat. Small Cakes also offers rotating flavors and their cupcakes are crazy moist. The cakes are just the right amount without the steroid look and the buttercream frosting is perfect and also, just the right amount. I also love that this establishment is part of the Hometown Rewards. It's an app that you download to your smart phone for deals in the area. This is a neat little place and a solid addition to St. Charles. In many ways, cupcakes are a matter of preference and my review reflects that. Overall, the look and feel are good. The storefront was nice, the woman was helpful, and the presentation was good, but these cupcakes weren't what I was hoping for. The cake itself reminded me of what you might buy at a nicer grocery store and the frosting was much, much too sweet for my liking. With that, the frosting on some (in this case, the coconut and wedding cake flavors) has a very gritty consistency similar to a powdered sugar icing (more fluffy, but just as gritty). Again, it's a preference thing. I prefer a slightly less sweet frosting with a smoother feel. The ice cream sunday cupcake had great presentation and the frosting was smoother (a mock whipped cream frosting?), but the cake suffered from the same grocery-store feel and taste. read more

My husband and I stopped in at Smallcakes today to pick up a few cupcakes as a treat. I ordered the wedding cake cupcake which is almond cake with a white almond frosting. The cake was very fresh and moist and the frosting was creamy and delicious. My husband ordered the pink chocolate which is simple chocolate cake with pink vanilla frosting. He said that the cake was nice and moist but the frosting was a just tad sweeter than he prefers. All in all we really enjoyed our cupcakes and will definitely come back.
