If the meat department doesn't step it up, I will not be buying meat from this Smart & Final anymore. I like coming to S&F. They have really good competitive prices on their produce (3 bunches of green onions or cilantro for $.99). The bulk items they sell come in handy for one of my jobs. Today, we stopped by to pick up some groceries for my sweet friend since she had surgery recently. She was craving chili cheese dogs. First, I got an onion. I went with red because I like that bite vs the white onion. After produce, I picked of some of the Smart & Final brand "First Street" medium shredded cheddar. Not too far away, the hotdogs. I'm not a Ballpark fan, I like to usually go with Nathan's, but today, we are trying a new brand, Hoffman's. These were pretty big. Last but not least, we got some buns. Again, we went with the store brand. The crossiants that come in boxes of 9 are only $6 and I think they are the best grocery store crossiants you can get anywhere. They make stunning sandwiches. I'm addicted to finding out what plants they'll have for sale next (right now, there are beautiful orchids). Last year, they had some of the biggest, prettiest monstera plants for only $40 (I have had mine for a year now). I always like to check out the meat department. They have good deals on chicken. My friends like to his steaks here. However... Today, I noticed how much blood from the meat packages was leaking onto the shelves and it was all over, along the entire shelf. There was so much on the shelves it was disturbing! Dry and wet in places. This is very unsanitary and can you imagine the cross-contamination happening here? People can get sick. Since there were not any employees around, I had to wait until I checked out to let the cashier know. She seemed to know that they were setting up to clean the shelves very soon, but I feel like it should never be like this. You can see from my previous reviews that I do enjoy coming here. Today, I just happen to notice the meat department needs to do some major cleanup. I'm not sure how long it has been like that, but I feel like I have never seen it this bad at any other grocery store. This review was posted to the wrong store 20 days ago. Organized food that's fresh and has good prices! I actually went into this one to buy a toothbrush while on vacation but it's much like the one near my home. They don't jam every inch 20 feet high here like some grocery stores and you can actually find things with easy signs to follow as well. read more

This was the worst grocery store produce department I have ever seen, many produce items where missing and I ask a lady if there where a specific type of tomato's in the back and she never left but never came back. There where no single garlic cloves and there where even empty produce displays right when you walk into the store. There were also missing carts. When I got there there were like 2 or 3 in the designated area so I grabbed one. I shopped through the produce department first and I did not have anything in my cart (because they were out of stock of a lot of stuff) and someone grabbed my cart without asking. I went back outside to the designated cart area and there was just one cart. The rest of the stuff was pretty easy to find but the produce department and cart availability is 1-star. read more

Worst grocery store in town, the lines typically wrap all around the store, they never have more than 3 people who do check out at once, they don't even have self checkout. They refuse to hire more people despite clearly needing more people. Anytime you shop here expect to wait in line for 30 minutes. Their machine is also stupid if you try to buy a soda it rings up as a case so be careful they don't rip you off, they also will charge you cash for things that are EBT eligible and claim they are not eligible. All Smart and Final Extra stores have the same layout. I went to this Auburn location and went down aisle 11 ( ice cream / sodas / water cases ) and saw a homeless man drinking a beer and smoking a cigarette while trying to hide between the pallets of water. I walked the aisles until I found an Employee ( his name tag read assistant manager which I always considered to be someone who takes ownership of happenings in their place of employment) and let him know what was going on. I continued to shop as I heard him say that he would take care of it. I forgot all about it. I walked over to aisle 12 ( frozen food and cold beer ) and the same homeless man was doing the exact same thing but just one aisle over. They have stacks of Negro Modelo cases floating in the middle of the aisle and the homeless man put his lit cigarette onto the cases. It was actually smoldering and causing a small fire. I guess he must of told the homeless man that he had to leave but did not specify that he had to leave the business. SMH At the time I felt like I had a civic duty to report what I saw. Decent grocery store but better suited for businesses than the everyday shopper. They have a lot of bulk options of food and utensil items. Lines can take a while so prepare to be patient. There is no deli but food is typically well stocked. I used to be an instacart shopper here and did not have any complaints. Also somewhat of an Easter egg as they are one of the few stores that play rare Taylor swift songs. read more

if you're looking to save money by using their app, beware. I could not login because I forgot my password, and the lady at the register, mega Thompson by name, would not take the time to help me. She told me that I was not going to be able to use any of the coupons, even though it was not my fault, I could not log into their app. When I sent the request for a password link, I would get an error from the app. She was rude and was more concerned with getting us out the door, then helping us. read more

I love shopping here everyone is so friendly and super helpful this is a very clean establishment very clean atmosphere they have all of my favorites when I don't want to make a trip to Costco the sidles are crying large which makes shopping more comfortable so you don't feel like your smelling the customer in front of you the prices are very affordable the chicken they have here the hot ones are 3 pounds that last me and my family a few meals easy they have a very clean parking lot the cashiers and other employees are great here they go above and beyond to make sure you find exactly everything you need I highly recommend this establishment for anyone they have a large variety of items to choose from I will definitely be coming back here again very soon for more future visits and more great experiences to come thank you smart and final in auburn read more

I stopped here today because I needed something in bulk and with gas prices what they are now didn't feel like driving all the way to WinCo where I usually do bulk shopping and then hit Trader Joe's while I'm down there. Been in this store a couple of times since they opened and they have a lot of items you can't get elsewhere but have never been impressed with their prices. If you can find what you need on sale it's good otherwise not worth it. Produce is so so. Was able to find assistance when I needed it without too much hassle and the cashier was very nice but did I mention that the one item I went in there to get in bulk they were out of? Yay. Next time I'll just pay a little more and get it out of another grocery store bulk bin. read more

I have been a supporter of Smart & Final for literally decades (think back when "Iris" was their house brand) and was thrilled to see them come to Auburn. Recently, arrived to pick up groceries only to be greeted by a sign that told me they were requiring masks to enter the store. Keep in mind Placer County is not requiring any face masks be worn in any of the business locations in our county. So... big corporate heads makes a decision without actually looking at the local situation, checking the facts. local health data and simply choose to enact a sweeping corporate edict? OK, I've had to make a decision too. Left without buying anything, went to Target (no masks required) and have since found several nice stores that welcome my business without fear and senseless enforcement. Bit pricey unless the item(s) you need are on sale. I haven't waited long in line, suppose whether it's a peak hour it could change that opinion, so I avoid those times to shop. True there aren't employers asking if you need help but I think the store is well laid out and convenient location. Overall prices are ok compared to some grocers in the area. read more

Until the new Costco opens in Auburn --- this will suffice as the "next best thing." Grand Opening specials were off the charts crazy: how about FF chicken breasts for 39 cents per pound? or cans of Cambell's Healthy Choice "Chunky" soup for 99 cents. Or maybe those large Haas avocados for 39 cents? This is not your regular Smart & Final store. This one is an "Extra" -- which means there are a full produce department and bulk foods section. (Looks like they swallowed a "Sprouts Market.") Even the "regular" prices on all non-sale items are much cheaper than Safeway or Bel-Air (the two nearby retail grocers). I don't know what the first reviewer was talking about. I saw many local residents that were hired for the new store: some of them came from the "Grocery Outlet" in Auburn. This is now my main grocery store in Auburn. It will save us hundreds of dollars on gas (just for our own household) not having to drive to Roseville Costco. read more

Don't be in a hurry.... IMHO they need to work on their customer service some more. Went in on a Friday night at 5:30pm to pick up a few items. There were 7 people in the line with only 1 cashier open. She kept paging for more cashiers to come up. But, 10 minutes later; no more lanes were opened. Stopped in to purchase a large box of ambience coffee for my Keurig in decaf. The lady was so unhelpful and flat out said they couldn't be bothered to order any if it's not already there. Reviewing just the produce department,bulk foods,lean meats .I would give Smart and Final 3/4 stars.As I have not shop the other sections as much or none at all. Very low prices on the produce and the quality was very good to okay on most items. Now my favorite store in Auburn for buying fruits and vegetables and many other items. We drive 40 minutes to Winco every month to shop-NO MORE! This place has the same prices but way closer and a much larger variety of fruits and veggies! Friendly and very helpful staff. Many gluten free and healthy options as well! read more

I live in Grass Valley and only have done one visit, but worth the 20-minute drive. I know the company from years on the Monterey Peninsula, where I shopped them all the time. This new location is priced and stocked well so that it is well worth the price of gas to drive down and fill my back seat with staples and everyday items. Pricing is very competitive and there is a large selection of products. Some packaging is too big for my small lifestyle, but still worth it. More later when I've made a few more visits. read more

Smart and final in auburn has the most discourteous employees, no one ever greets you. If you ask for help they seem to be preoccupied with other things. The lines to check out are a real mess, a grumpy employee told us one time to go check out in the ten or less items , we had much more than ten items, the problem with that was people are getting in line with ten or less items behind us, real poor management, and the customer service is the worst we have experienced . Won't be shopping at smart and final anymore. Would not recommend this store to anyone. read more

Twice in the past month or so the Auburn California Smart and Final store has advertised, on their Web page, a bag of 15 avocados on sale. Each time we go to the Auburn store, to buy the bag of avocados on sale, they say "we don't have a sale on 15 bagged avocados." Then, they try to sell us 50 avocados at a higher price for each avocado! When we tell them we want 15 avocados at the sale price, they deny that they even have the bag of avocados on sale listed on their Web page (until we show them our phone's Web browser listing the ad on their store's Web page). Then, they tell us they aren't offering the 15 avocados on sale (even though it's listed on their Web page) because "our demographic doesn't warrant having the bag of 15 avocados on sale." What is that supposed to mean? Why even list the bag of avocados on sale on your store's Web page multiple times if you aren't even going to have them on sale due to our demographic? This stinks of Bait and Switch! read more
