The only thing I really like about Smart & Final is their produce. Even though it is by far the closest grocery store to my house. But I rarely shop here for two main reasons. The first is price. Their prices are well above Winco and Walmart Neighborhood Market. The second and more important reason is their checkout. I had time with only two people in front of me to write this review and unload my groceries from my cart. They are the slowest and most poorly trained CSR staff I have ever come across. Came in the day after the grand opening; it wasn't as bad as I thought. The registers were moving pretty quickly, the shelves are pretty well stocked and organized, and there was a pretty good selection of brands and bulk food. I liked coming here especially because they were having a mandatory mask policy, but on my recent visit that wasn't the case. The store was busy and half, yes half of the people in the store weren't wearing masks. No matter what day or time of day I go in to this store, 7am, noon, 5pm, etc..... it's always a SLOW in/out. The cashiers (whether they are the clerks or managers working registers) never have a sense of urgency to get the customers through the line in a reasonable amount of time....ESPECIALLY when there are 4, 5, 6+ people in a line - hurry it up....and open another line too wouldn't hurt! They never seem to open more than 2 lines at a time, usually only 1...even during a peak shopping time; 5pm after work, or weekends! Bad management planning....and the register clerks never have a friendly, customer service demeanor....don't enjoy shopping here. read more

I like this store. Good size that carries quite a bit in their inventory. The staff is very helpful and friendly. Many of the prices here are very decent and you can find a good variety of deals shopping here. When I am in town I would definitely shop here again. read more

It's good to have this grocery store nearby this place. I like going here on Wednesday since that's when they have their best sale on fresh vegetables and meats. The place is keep clean and restock all the time. They have plenty of friendly staffs to help you when your looking for some items. They have a bulk isles for can goods and big party as well. The prices are also very competitive to most local grocery stores. Overall I'm happy at this store and I hope they stay here for a very long time. =)) read more

my dad and I went to this location to get their latest deal on the water. 2 cases for $8. we looked all around the store until we realized it was outside. we lined up to buy the beer in our cart and asked the lady if they still had the deal on the water outside, she responded "huh, uh no idk". now I don't mean to over exaggerate but she said that word for word. my dad said oh can we get 6. she walked out to scan it and my dad asked again a little louder if they had the deal on the water. she ignored him and continued.how can you have such bad customer service, never have we experienced this much attitude from a cashier until today. her name was anya I'm pretty sure from what I saw. not sure if we will be coming back again. read more

Thankful to have another local store here to go to on the East Side of Old EG. This is our go to spot to go to for alcohol and usually everyone who works here is super pleasant but on tonight's trip there the cashier (Andre) was really rude when I showed him my passport. He asked me if I had my CA ID instead. If I had it I would've showed you that instead. He was rude to everyone else with me as he was checking them out. No thank you or anything. I'm a regular customer at this store and the new manager "Donte" (not sure of spelling) is not professional or considerate of ALL customers in my opinion. It was morning around 10am and I needed to just grab a few items and only two lanes were open that were consumed with extremely large purchases which caused a backup. So he took the next customer in line and immediately opened a new lane, which was excellent. However, he realized it wasn't enough help so he himself opened up at a register and began to help customers, which again was very excellent. So I began watching and waiting for him to call me on over because I was next in line but he never did, he actually helped customers BEHIND me and left me to wait all this time to get helped, then after I was finally next he glanced over at me, so he was completely aware of what he did! So irritated with this store! What a basket case and a hot mess! Every time we shop here we have nothing but problems. Every week they run out of their sale items half way through the week! Last week it was split chicken breast, this week it's salmon. Worse yet, twice in the last week, we've had to abandon a grocery cart of food! Last week I just had to leave my cart of produce. Wait forever to check out? I don't think so! I'll take my money elsewhere. They JUST CAN'T seem to have more than one or two cashiers working with a huge line, just WAITING!! My wife just left a cart cause they had two lines running and crossing in the middle of the store! Lines 8+ people deep...? Really? I called and talked to the Manager on Duty, and it helps nothing- "we have 4 cashiers now", well, George, YOU are one of them and there was only 2 ten minutes ago! Just stopped in on opening day. Beautiful, new store! There was not a single space to park, so I had to park down the street and walk in. It was so crowded, which is good to see! Looks like a full market, with a good selection of products, and great prices! I was EXTREMELY disrespected buy some union picketers out front who got in me and my dad's face. I had to call the police actually, because the guys were such jerks and it was escalating quickly. Same jerky picketers that were at Sprouts awhile back. Don't know why they can't picket politely and leave uninterested people alone... Anyway, the store was so busy that I didn't buy anything, but I plan to go back very soon! Unbelievable!!! I don't write review retail places but I had to for this place on Elk Grove Blvd. Avoid asking anyone any questions or for any help. I personally think they have a game to see how many times they can pass the customer along to another employee. The day I went, someone probably won the GOLD METAL! Never had I been told to use your own eyes to look to see if they have something on the shelf. Also I was told by another employee that they sell things quick, if you don't see it don't bother checking with us. I wish I can make this up but I would never come back to this location. I wish I'm making this up but nope. Get small items, quick stop, it's a good place but please for the love of god avoid asking for help, it's a JOKE. Especially from an individual name DOUG, if I'm not mistaken. I think he position require him not to MOVE from one given spot. 6:00 pm on a Wednesday. Lots of shoppers. Restroom closed for cleaning. Only two registers open. Long lines. The one courtesy clerk (bag girl) walked slowly for a price check and was gone two and a half minutes. She had no sense of urgency. The floor manager opened a register and helped three customers before closing and going back to stare at shelves while the lines remained. Cashier greeted me, but never said thanks or bye and was talking to the next customer as she dumped the receipt in my hands. This store has a lot to learn about customer service. read more

Prices good, selection good. Lines WAY TO LONG. Cashiers friendly, TOO friendly, visiting holds up the already long lines. The 10 items lane is a joke. Customers don't respect it and cashiers say nothing. I suggest a stand alone sign saying 10-14 items lane only be placed right where the customers line up so IT CANNOT BE MISSED. If check out lane really needed then it can be moved. As the store is very close to my house I have made a habit of driving through the parking lot. If it is full I just keep driving the extra 3 blocks to Save Mart. I am even considering calling to ask if the lines are long before I leave but doubt if they would be honest with me. If you don't mind LONG lines or having 6-7 items and standing behind overflowing carts in the 10 items lane then you will enjoy shopping here. read more

I went to buy VDK Fish Fillet. The price tag was (week special) $3.99. When I went to the cashier for check out, the check out price was $4.99. I think the store displaying the sale prices to attract the customers and charging more at the check out. This is price fixing. Are they doing this purposely? I wonder how many customers were over charged since the sale was on. When I questioned the cashier about the higher price than the sale price, the staff became very angry.They held the check out process and sent two staff to verify the price holding the long line. The staff came and confirmed the price as $3.99. When I asked when are they going to change the price for the future customers, the cashier and the manager became very angry and did not give an answer. Dear customers, when you visit this store in the future, be very careful to check the check out price with the sale price. This is price fixing. read more
