Made 4 calls to their customer experience line; the woman took my complaint and told me I would be hearing from the "district manager"...that was well over a week ago. No call back! This is why they continue to have people working there who shouldn't be...no follow up on the abusive manager and dishonest assistant manager. Also the local Walmart Store has lower prices and better customer service...more professional in their customer service interactions on an over all basis. I tried the fresh sushi they were selling. It's probably the worst thing I've ever put in my mouth. Had to spit it up. The spicy tuna roll was mushy and smelled bad the California roll was terrible and mushy with a bad bitter taste. The dumplings were hard dry and unedible. I wanted to give some recognition to Yuri from the Smart & Final Extra off 26911 Trabuco Rd Mission Viejo, Ca. I saw him all around the store assisting people and the work team. When I went up to check out my groceries, he was there as well. I was impressed by the fact that he was doing such a great job and helping out in every department. I asked him if things had been pretty rough lately. He mentioned that things were good, with the exception of one customer earlier that day that was extremely upset with him. The customer was upset when Yuri mentioned the toilet paper had a maximum quantity of one for purchase. The customer called him a Nazi and threw a fit in the store. This angry man mentioned that he was going to post Yuri's picture all over social media and let people know that he was a horrible person. Wow! Really? It is sometimes hard to believe how mean people can be to the people that are working so hard, 18 hours a day, to provide food and supplies for the community. I felt compelled to post Yuri's photo on social media to let everyone know that he is an AWESOME person. He was not only very helpful when I had questions, he also had a smile on his face, M despite working two weeks straight and double shifts. It is people like Yuri that make this world a better place. If you see Yuri in the store, let him know that he is awesome! As a reminder to everyone, please be kind to the selfless and overworked store personnel that have not chosen to go home and take a sick leave, rather stay and help out the community in our time of need. read more

I visited this store on 8/14/24. A 24 pack of Pepsi was on sale for $6.99 marked down from $13.99 using a digital coupon. The bad part was the digital coupon was impossible to use. I got in line to have my order rung up at approximately 2:29pm, and after 45 minutes of management trying to get my app to work to allow me to use the digital coupon, the coupon never showed up in my e-mail box after three attempts. For my trouble, since my time is worth far more than $7 savings for 45 minutes, I feel that they could have just honored the advertised discount, but Ramona the manager told me that if she did so that she would be fired. First off, if what the store manager told me was true, I believe that it's short sighted of Smart and Final to threaten to fire managers for trying to help customers to have a positive shopping experience. Well, unless I'm made whole and later given the advertised $7 discount, I will never do business at this store again. Their app is very complicated and user unfriendly, and their policy of not honoring discounts if the app isn't working on their end is bad business. By the way, employees at their competitors places of business, namely Albertsons and Ralph's are far more accommodating regarding honoring advertised discounts if there are problems with customers being able to use apps, ESPECIALLY if they and the store manager have been struggling themselves to get the app to work for nearly an hour. This was the WORST, most painful grocery shopping experience I have ever had in my 62 years of living. The only reason I'm giving it two stars instead of one is that their store manager did spend a generous amount of time trying to get my app to work, but still with no success. She admitted that the problem was partly with their Internet, and had me try to retrieve the password reset e-mail outside. It still never worked. read more

I stopped in this store Friday night to grab just a few items. It was my first time in the store since it has become Smart and Final. I guess I started things off on the wrong foot by entering through the Exit. But, the door opened, so I went in anyway. It had been raining not long before I stopped here. There was a boyscout trying to sell me a coupon book right inside the exit door. I was trying to grab a basket, and he was blocking them.... then he kept reaching down to help me, but didnt. It was the weirdest thing. His mom was standing right behind him, completely consumed by her cell phone... so she was no help at all. So, the store is clean, and it is basically like a smaller version of a typical grocery store. I found the few items I needed, however almost got ran over by an employee coming out of the back with a huge flat of bottled water. Went right in front of me and just stopped short. Looked at me like I was out of order, and went back into the back area to talk to someone. I made my way around the water, and carried on. Got to the checkout and there was one lane open. This wouldnt have really been an issue, but the cashier was talking to two other employees there, and a young boy - maybe 6 or 7 about an item he purchased but never made it out of the store. I dont know the exact story, but you would have thought it was a million dollar item. And in all fairness, to that little boy I bet it felt like it was! His mom said he saved up his money, had gone to the CVS coinstar and came in to buy it. So I get it. BUT... the other two employees could have handled this. The cashier didnt need to be the third employee involved. It took a good 5 minutes for her to check out the guy in front of me who had two items. TWO. When it was my turn: Cashier: Hi, how are you? Me: Im good, how are you? Cashier turns her back to me and goes back to solving the missing item for the little boy with the other two employees. Cashier: Hi, how are you? Me: Im still good, thanks. Cashier rings one of my items, and goes back to her other conversation. Cashier: Hi, how are you? I ignored her this time, and I was getting seriously pissed off. I finally made it out of the store, and I dont know what happened to the kids toy, but for the sake of everyone trying to buy groceries, I hope its been solved. I'll skip this store in the future. Im only giving this 3 stars because the store was clean and neatly organized, not for a single thing else. read more

Trying to be nice here but this store is getting one star because the cashier yesterday had her mask hanging so low, I could see her teeth. Yes, they have the protective screens but if your going to talk over my food please keep your mask on. If your mask doesn't fit right there is a box of maskes on your checkstand 3/$1.99. If youre going to keep touching your mask that is half way off, those gloves you wear dont protect me or you. If youre going to let your mask hang, please dont move yourself outside the screen to talk. I hope that the manager asks his employees to test because one of them is not careful at all with themselves though a very nice person. I'd driven around to four other stores and finally found the item I was in need of at this store for my fathers birthday dinner. We have tried to let them settle into the role of local grocery store for this community, but they are just not cutting it!!! We tried only shopping there sparingly, but after the latest fiasco of me waiting in line behind customers who wanted more frozen "Texas Toast," and almost TEN minutes & THREE different employees not being able to figure this "dilemma" out, I left!!!!!!!! NEVER TO RETURN AGAIN! We have learned our lesson. SOME of the staff is friendly and I believe they try, unfortunately, MOST of their staff are infuriatingly slow and clueless. To put it simple, a smile and positive attitude can make a huge difference. There was an employee I think his name was Jason, he was bald. He said hi as we walked by with our daughters, but just had such a positive energy you can just feel and later was super helpful when we lost our credit card that fell out of our pocket. He really went out of his way to help us and with such positive energy. Maybe he was having a good day but the guy looked so happy to do his job it made me appreciate grocery store workers because I'm sure it's not always easy. My family and I found our new local grocery store thanks to him (and the lower prices help too). read more

Maybe 3.5 stars. I moved into the neighborhood a block away from this store a couple months ago. I've now been here a dozen or more times since my move. The store is clean, the prices are decent. I would definitely have to agree with many of the other reviews, if it does get busy in this store, they don't usually have extra cashiers. It's never been too much of a problem, but IMO, customer service should never be such an issue that most of your reviews reflect that fact. They have a decent selection of groceries, some bulk items as well. They have a very limited selection of health and beauty items. If you want toothpaste, deodorant or soap, you will not have much of a selection. I have pretty much found that this store is more for last minute, need in a hurry kind of shopping, at least for me it's that way. My wife and I have to do our weekly shopping elsewhere due to limited variety of items we actually like as well as lack of cashiers. It's still a decent store though. read more

I've been shopping there for years and really liked it and the employees but last night was really terrible. My girlfriend and I got there at 9:30 and immediately got the evil eye from a checker one we've never seen. Almost within a minute she's Rudely talking on the PA system that we close at 10pm then proceeded to say it every 5 min. Really irritating and rude !!! We rushed forgot a lot of what we went for. They even shut lights off and on to scare us out I guess. Hell even after paying it was only 10:05 when I told he we didn't appreciate it she was rude as hell. Other than Hot Madras Curry and Guinness in the tall cans with the nitrogen balls, this store has everything I need. The prices are great, the selection is good for this old dude, the neighborhood location is convenient, I can get bulk sizes if needed and the hours are great - it always seems to be open. It's early Super Bowl Sunday and I'm headed over there for breakfast ingredients for four out of my five adult kids staying over this weekend. Let's see... Before I shop at any other store I try and get everything I need at Smart and Final. Their prices are magical! Honestly, I save $60 plus dollars sometimes compared to any other grocery store. Primarily I purchase, everything except meat and produce (except some produce items) here. The store is clean and their customer service is amazing too! You will find people in the isles ready to answer your questions and help you find an item, or go in the back of the store to see if they have anything that might not be on a shelf. This Smart & Final in Mission Viejo is a great improvement from the previous Ralphs grocery, although the transition from product change and an entirely new customer base has been rocky... The store itself was given a nice renovation, they now have warehouse-style products and prices, and the smell is gone: http://bit.ly/1ONSqSX This location is small for a Smart & Final warehouse, hence the "extra!" which means they are emphasizing an expanded selection of organic foods and warehouse bulk products that are sold in smaller packages. But make no mistake, this location didn't turn into a Whole Foods or Trader Joe's. Nor is it a Costco or Food 4 Less, and it's certainly not Haggen or a 99 Cents Only store... It's a place where you can now purchase a whole lot of a certain product for a reasonable price plus a little extra, like waitstaff order pads and 1000 carnival tickets; Smart & Final extra! has that stuff. Found exactly what I was looking for when I walked in: 500 paper plates and cups, apples, water, and frozen chicken wings. And the extra! read more

We've seen this location go from Albertsons, Haggen and now Smart & Final. I'm not sure why there seems to be an issue with the transiton of stores in this location but I am not sure that Smart & Final will survive. I had not idea of what to expect but had shopped at Smart & Final years past at the location off El Toro and prior to that the location near my previous home in Garden Grove. So I knew what to expect generally and was happy they were here. My expectations are with mixed feelings - 1) Employees - I'd say the its all the employees fault that they are not skilled in customer service and knowledge of product location, but it's really managements responsibility to ensure their employees are trained and focus on customer service. (Example: I sent my husband in to buy some watercress, I knew for a fact that they had it, but told my husband to ask the employee working in produce to direct him since hubby didn't know what it looked like, which is reasonable, however that employee didn't even know what watercress was, yet he works in produce. I was nearby and drove over myself, getting there in 1 minute, saw my hubby and found it in 30 seconds. Meanwhile the guy in produce was out in the front of store taking a break, maybe the employee should have spent the time looking for watercress instead of taking a break) 2) Cleanliness - the store appeared to be clean on the surface 3) Cashier - the staff seemed non interested in providing customer service, now I don't need you to make iddle talk and be my friend, but a friendly smile and 'hello' would not be to challenging to do. After all, if patrons aren't happy with the store they wont come back and your job would be gone. Would I go back????? I'm not sure. I'll stick with my Trader Joes and keep Smart and Final for only those times i do parties. I hope that Management works to improve supporting their employees and making them feel confident about their job. read more

Time around 6:00pm register one has 4 big orders and register 5 has about 9 customers behind me. No one is being called to the front to open any register. Some guy randomly runs to the front to open register 4. I stay on register 5 only to not be greeted by the most angry looking cashier. The guy on the other register asked for back up immediately which i don't understand why it wasn't done earlier. Marisol shoved my groceries in the bag and never said hi bye or thank you. Yesterday, hours after I got home from shopping at Smart & Final in Mission Viejo, I realized that I had lost my small purse with more than $200 cash and no ID. That evening I checked my car over and over, emptied my large purse onto the floor going through every step I had made earlier. I could not find my purse. So today on the chance that I might just get lucky, I called Smart & Final and spoke to Tara. A very kind customer turned in my purse to the cashier who gave it to the manager. I immediately went to pick it up and Tara was so nice to have it ready for me. Thank you to the super nice customer, the cashier and the manager who were so honest! I like this store and shop here frequently. It's not as fancy as Ralph's or Pavillions in the area, however for the most part, it has the same stuff for less money. I've never had to wait in line for more than 1-2 minutes. Some of these reviews crack me up with people who want friendly cashiers. Frankly, I could care less if the cashier is friendly if I'm saving $30 vs going to a fancier store. read more

I would give a negative star rating if I could. I had the WORST experience ever in a grocery store here. I guess canned goods/water was labeled with a limit of 2 or 4. The sign is very high on the top shelf and I didn't see it (I'm short). When I went to checkout, I was treated like a criminal !!!! They quickly removed the extra items and accused me of seeing the sign twice!!!! I was absolutely humiliated and will NEVER EVER go to this grocery store again. One employee had a beard and was early 30s. The other cashier had dark hair and in 30s too. Such unkind employees who are miserable and wanted to lash out. This market happens to be the closest to my house but this is the second time I came home with food that was spoiled. There fridges must be bad. I gave my 18month old daughter ROTTEN MILK! Omg I am so mad. the expectation date says it's good till oct 22. I buy organic cause I want healthy food for her not to poison her! She didn't drink much cause the milk was rotten but she still had some if she gets sick there is gonna be some problems. I turned 50 this year and have been coming to this store location since the late 70's. 95% of the time I get helpful and fairly friendly enough people working in the store. Today was hilarious. Pulled up the the store and an active employee is on the curb smoking a cigarette and clearly very agitated by the person on the other end of the flip phone. After the dirty glare in my direction I watched an innocent black trash can take a beating before being force fead the phone. Best part was the tough guy walk back into the store with the smiley face employee T-shirt showing on his back. Lame. Beat it. read more

I usually don't leave reviews. Especially negative reviews but this store is the worst. They never have enough cashiers and they are so impersonal. Today was the tops when the cashier basically accused me of stealing because my card didn't go through. All she had to say is that my pin didn't work. Instead she grabbed the groceries out of my hand. I live in this neighborhood and I'm not trying to steal from the janky grocery store down the street (not even the nice grocery store). Some people have long days at work and don't need to be shamed in front of the line because they entered their pin incorrectly. Today was the last time. We really appreciate having this store conveniently close by. It's clean and offers a nice selection of fresh veggies and fruit at reasonable prices and a wide array of food choices and drinks. Could there be more cashiers open, especially when there are obviously lines forming...definitely. And yes we are regular locals, so we know, this is an area for improvement. But in the end our trips there are relatively quick. We like the people that work there, usually courteous and helpful. This is a good spot for this store and we need to keep it there. read more
