My wife and I shop here for some produce and boxed/canned goods because they tend to be cheaper than Sprouts/Trader Joe's/Safeway where we also do our grocery shipping. The store itself is a bit older feeling and less organized/more crammed together, but it's not trying to be a high-end grocer. Came by to grab some groceries the other day and it was a quick and easy experience. Parking was plentiful in the private lot. The interior of the grocery store was dimly lit and felt a little grimey with the beige/brown/grey tones throughout the store. I've always had good luck at this one , most of the items ( well maybe I could find every thing other than salt for the water conditioner ) they have on stock for being a smaller store. Produce selection is very good and for the drinks and spirits selection surprisingly large again for a smaller one. Shopping here twice in one week at the height of the coronavirus pandemic! Don't often come here, as a 2 mile walk from my house, while Safeway, Trader Joe's, Dollar Tree, and Sprouts all within 0.5 miles walking distance of my house, and Target 1 mile from my house. So there has to be something special on sale for me to drive here. Came here at 7am on a Monday morning, lured by several bargains in the newspaper ads: 69 cents a pound Bartlett Pears, 99 cents for a head of lettuce, $1.49 a pound black grapes. Also needed to warm up the battery of the Honda Fit, as hasn't been driven in 18 days. Sign outside says it all: all customers must wear masks, no more than 2 customers per party, no outside bags permitted, 6 foot social distancing within the store, no customers coughing or fever allowed. Store hours 6am-10pm, with Tuesdays and Thursdays 6am-8am reserved for those age 60+, the disabled, pregnant women and hospital medical first responders. I grab a cart that has been stored overnight in the rack, to minimize germs. No hand sanitizer at the entrance. Get pears, grapes, lettuce, potato salad, bananas at 55 cents a pound, 64 ounce apple cider at $2.29 each, and even a dozen eggs at $2.49, only to realize when I got home that the eggs expired today! Found 6oz packages of raspberries on sale for 99 cents apiece. Leftovers from the weekend, I take the bottom packages next to the refrigerated cooler rack. Got to eat these within 24 hours before they mold. Also got a 24 roll package of toilet paper for $13, the first time I have ever seen toilet paper at S&M, I mean S&F during the pandemic. Add this to my 3 purchases of 4 rolls apiece from Safeway, 16 rolls from Dollar Tree, and 12 rolls from Trader Joes, bringing my total purchases to 64 rolls in the past 48 days of the pandemic shelter in place. At checkout, I load up the conveyor belt with packaged food first, and produce last, so that I can move 10 feet over to watch the products and prices appear on the screen behind the plastic barrier. More likely that cashier will make a mistake in hand entering the 4 digit produce code, than the automatic product scanner. Sure enough, as the young cashier failed to notice that the 3 packs raspberries were on sale for 99 cents each, and rung them up at $2.99 each. All sales final, so once out the door, you're SOL if you get overcharged. And if you are walking home, don't rely on them giving you a bag. Like a lot of supermarkets, S&F ran out of bags on the weekend, so Monday you have to carry everything in your bare hands the 2 mile walk home, or push the shopping cart home! This is not a good idea, as they scan the id marker on the bottom rack of the cart with each purchase, to link the customer credit card number to the cart. If the cart is missing at the end of the day, they would look up the last transaction, and your credit card number could be charged. Also you could get a within 6 feet visit from the Sunnyvale Police, while pushing that cart on public sidewalks! read more

She said" no more, what you see is what you get" so I bought all they had on the shelf and left. Once I got to my car, I decided to go back and see whether she was lying to me. So I went back and noticed I was right, she just gave me the run around. So I confronted her, I asked her why she lied to me when she has so much more . I used to be just an occasional customer at Smart and Final. I'd come here every once in a while to buy bulk hamburger and hot dog buns for our swim team's barbecue, or maybe to get a huge box of single-serving Cheetos. It's also one of the few places that carry those Jiffy Pop pans to make popcorn over a campfire. More recently, I've been shopping here a lot during the Covid-19 shelter in place. I stopped going to Costco as often as I had in the past, since the lines were longer and the crowds were larger. I think I had a subconscious and completely unjustified bias against this place, for reasons that I can't even begin to articulate. Now, after multiple visits, this is one of my favorite places to shop for food. The fresh vegetables are of good quality. They have a large selection of fruits, including several different apple varieties, at prices that are sometimes substantially lower than at other stores (e.g. honeycrisp apples for only $1.99/lb, as opposed to $3.00+ at Safeway). They sometimes have King Arthur flour in stock (both regular and whole wheat). They have a decent selection of meats, and the bulk quantities aren't quite as big as at Costco. The cheese section is surprisingly diverse, with both common cheeses and gourmet imports. There are a few shortcomings, however. I've noticed that sometimes the milk that they have can be very close to expiration. Some of the First Street brand items aren't quite as high in quality as I would like, but the prices are very competitive. On balance, nevertheless, this place is still an excellent place to shop and I've all but eliminated my trips to Costco. Regarding coronavirus adaptations, be prepared for some DIY. They don't have someone cleaning the carts, but they provide paper towels and a spray (I assume it's alcohol-based) at the entrance so you can wipe things down. The aisles are narrow and probably could benefit from some one-way arrows, but for the most part the typical shopper here is conscientious and people respect distance. There is a single lane to approach the checkstands that wraps around the perimeter, which is good keeping those waiting in line from interfering with the flow of other shoppers. There is a TV monitor that tells the next person in line which checkstand to go to. Overall, a very smart way to control traffic. read more

One star is for the cashier I've had twice on different days, same bad experience. First, she ordered me to lean over and to place all my items on the inside of the belt that is closer to her, and had to line them up in a single file so she could reach them without extending her arm; she said to me:" do I look like I have a mile long arm?" Then, she put two items inside my bag, leaving all other things for me to bag. Last time when I was there and tried to bag my own stuff, she yelled at me to stay behind the cashier glass. Finally when I was about to pay for my purchase, the credit card terminal was facing her; I tried turning it multiple times without success. She just watched and said, "push it down hard to turn it over. If you used your hand, not your fingers, you would get it first try." Last time I thought she might have had a bad day, but today's experience was worse than last. It's time to stop this nonsense! The cashier that I had the misfortune to put my items on her belt, yelled and screamed at me about why I did not put the items one by one in an order that was unclear to me. When I tried to do what she wanted, she proceeded to wipe her station again and again since my items (that I just tried to buy) were disgusting and dirty. However, the call support team told me that I have to resolve this with the store manager, and the your email support team never replied to me. The corporation has very consistent behaviors as the store on how to treat their customers badly! Even after so many complaints by emails and phone calls, I still haven't heard anything from the store and I have to dispute my credit card charge as a fraudulent activity. ----------- below is the initial review published on Oct 1st ----------- I bought less than $9 groceries and was charged by $30! No apology from the store nor actions to correct the charge! I am almost 10 month pregnant and the cashier spent time to joke with me instead of paying attention to his job. The selection is hit or miss here, as well as the attitudes of the people who work here. Look, I know this is a discount store, so I don't have high expectations. I also want to preface this by saying that I'm not a particularly sensitive person, and I'm always polite to and patient with retail workers, especially recently during these awful times. Some of the staff are friendly, but some are unfailingly rude. There's one young man in particular (early 20s, dark hair, glasses, I think his name is Junior?), who is probably the rudest person I've ever met working retail. If you hate your job so much, you probably need a change. I've also heard a friend of mine mention him when talking about this location. If someone is so rude it's worth mentioning, you know it's probably bad. Also, beware any produce that's marked down. It's probably past it's usability date. I came here for the Torani! When you see a place has an entire row of Torani syrups, you can't stay away. To be honest, my last visit to a Smart & Final was when I was maybe 16 for some utensils. I didn't even recall the chain carrying food, rather a place for plastic party plates and whatnot. Lo and behold it delivered: -So many Torani syrups. It is weirdly difficult to find these by the bunch, rather one flavor sprinkled here and there are supermarkets. So a whole row was like duuuudddddeeee. -Abnormally large items - Warehouse club-esque large portions. They had the larger than normal boxes of gum and cereal. The sizes were smaller than Costco, but larger than the norm. Also, they had the warehouse club varied assortment. - Good produce. They had a decently expansive produce section with my beloeved kabby also. -Great drink aisles - Score for a larger than normal size carbonated crystal geiser - Decent prices. Not the lowest to leave my mouth agape, nor the highest, to still leave my mouth hanging open. - Conveniently located. I'm sure you've passed it a number of times. Unless I needed my Torani syrup, Sunnyvale has such an expansive number of places to shop that I don't know if I would come here specifically. OK it's really a 3.75 Smart & Final is a smaller scaled alternative to Costco and yet it is more. You can find ice cream sundae fixings, cotton candy flavoring and huge selection of candy. Sure items may cost a little more however it is easy to get to and I've yet to have some one ram me in the back with their shopping cart. The children I have seen in Smart & Final are also well behaved - another thing that is not common in Costco. BEWARE! I purchased a product that was defective and was told that the store would not make me whole. In fact, the store manager told me that I put his life in danger because I brought the item back into the store. Well then I guess I shouldn't bring myself into their store either. I've never been so insulted before. Is that because I'm not white? Update: I was on hold for 2.5 hours before I someone from India answered the phone and basically couldn't help me at all. He said he would have someone call me back, but no one ever did. I guess this store just doesn't care about their customers. I shop here on a regular basis, and this place really came in handy during the past ten days when I had a vicious cold from hell (it didn't respond the garlic, zinc, Vitamin C, saltwater gargling, saline sprays, chicken soup, echinacea, etc). I write this stuff down, and the last time that I had a severe cold like this that responded to nothing that I tried was in November 2009 - subsequent colds were nipped in the bud until this latest one. I just didn't have the stamina to go to Costco and deal with crowds during my cold (it was one of those colds where one felt okay when one first woke up in the morning, and felt worse as each hour passed - by the time Costco opened at 10AM during the week, I'd be feeling awful), so I would shop here a little after 7AM (they open at 7AM seven days a week). I was here every three days for the duration of my cold. This morning, the only customers in the store besides me were paramedics. Seeing them buy potato chips made me feel a little less guilty about buying potato chips :P I was surprised to see that the Trident Seafoods Wild Salmon Burgers were slightly cheaper here than at Costco - $14.99 as opposed to $15.39 for a pack of twelve 4 oz burgers, as of last week - plus Smart and Final is much closer to me than Costco is. I am happy to say that their bathroom improved - much cleaner than it used to be, and had plenty of soap. Their organic spinach comes in 11 oz clear boxes as opposed to Costco's 16 oz boxes, but when I need my spinach, I need it. Their Crystal Geyser spring water was 99 cents per gallon. The past few times that I've been here, each cashier greeted me, asked me if I found everything I was looking for, and thanked me for shopping here. The majority of cashiers have been friendly, and employees on the sales floor have been quick to assist me. This place gets very crowded, so even without a raging cold, I generally shop here at off peak times - I've seen it get so busy that there are over a dozen shoppers in each line and only two cashiers (and sick or not, I do my best to avoid long lines if I can help it). No membership card required, so one less card to carry! Besides regular groceries, I've seen customers buy items such as light bulbs, envelopes, mops, carpet cleaning formula, kitchen towels, reusable/disposable food containers, trash bags, and oven mitts. Located in the same shopping center (Westmoor Village, on Fremont and Mary) as Hallmark, Wells Fargo, and Starbucks. BTW There is a large bin inside the store near the exit doors that accepts plastic bags for recycling. What a great alternative to Costco! It's small in comparison, but the deals are great! Unlike Costco, where you need to buy things in bulk, Smart and Final has smaller sizes so that you don't have to devote an entire closet for your purchase. Great place for groceries and household cleaning items - especially if you have a big family, are cooking for a large group or have a bunch of hungry bottomless pit teenagers to feed. The staff is helpful and available for price checks and assisting you with locating the items that you need. No crowds here - another big bonus. Sometimes Costco can get so busy, it becomes overwhelming. A membership application is still required to shop at Smart and Final, but the process is painless. read more

This is a fine supermarket. Not my main one or go-to place, so I only come here when I see a sale price in an ad that I want to get. That being said, they never have the really good sale items. I've been there 3 times chasing a good deal and anything that is really popular or a terrific bargain will just be gone, nowhere to be found. When I do go, it's not like I only buy the big sale item--I buy plenty of other stuff, too. But if the main thing that I want is not available, then it's a big disappointment. I'd rather have just gone to my usual Safeway in the first place. Maybe I'll try hitting it up as early as possible on the beginning day of a sale. Sigh... Maybe not. I don't need more hassle in my life. As a point of fair comparison, I also go to Lucky sometimes when they have a few killer sale items. It does not matter if the line of carts is wrapped around the fruit isle, the lady that is always there will NOT call for help. Here's the kicker, even if they do call for help... NOBODY COMES! I swear to Christ! What are the employment requirements of this place??? Baboons are overqualified for managerial positions at S&F. I have major issues with that one lady. Her tag says "Floral manager" and her name is something I am not even going to attempt to spell. I have waited for 2.5 minutes with my thumb up my *ss in the check out line because she disappeared from her station. No sense of urgency. It's like a cycle... New hires eventually lose their sense of urgency because what's the point of giving a crap if everyone around you is marinating in their own sh*t stains whilst wearing an apron with the Smart & Final logo on it. I asked her for a bag once and she replied "oh you don't need a bag". She was serious. If you're ever in Sunnyvale, close your eyes and listen very closely.... Hear that? Don't get me wrong I love costco but sometimes they offer too much in one box than you actually need or their prices for certain things are not as good as other items. They have restocking issues on some items, and this has gone on for years. What made me shop here less and less are long lines with only one cashier. Today, there were two cashiers, but it didn't help, because one cashier kept messing up on transactions and the other cashier had to keep coming over to help. The cashier that kept coming over to help was so stressed out that he started arguing with customers. One lady had her bath tissue already in her reusable bag, and he took the bath tissue out of the bag to scan it, which wasn't necessary, because the bar code was already facing him while the bath tissue was in the bag. Then he refused to re-bag it, and told her it could just go in the cart, until the lady insisted. She explained that she was walking home, and that she needed the bath tissue in a bag. I saw the cashier (who kept messing up) struggle to process a return. It took her 8 minutes, and she still was struggling. Finally, she had to call a manager over. The manager, thankfully, processed the return in under a minute. The customer in line after me asked my cashier if there would be more cashiers available, and the cashier just gave her an icy look. The main theme of this store is long lines going down the aisles, and there are never more than two cashiers at any given time (at least when I've been there). I have shopped here consistently for at least 6 years. The parking lot is hell during peak hours. There were some major potholes in the parking lot, but they were finally filled. An interesting option to Costco, Trader Joe's and the grocery stores. Relatively easy in and out. Strangely very few customers but it's never quick in/out (cashiers are slow) and I always have to hunt for someone to ask a question. If you're throwing a party and want/need a lot of things that are easy to make, this is a good place to shop. This is a great store. When reading the reviews, bear in mind that this store was completely remodeled between late November 2016 and January 2017. The store was upgraded to a "Smart and Final Extra!" (exclamation point theirs) and the selection has improved since then. Smart and Final (not just this location) has always had problems with restocking, so always ask if you can't find something. I find the remodeled store to be quite pleasant, with great produce, a great selection of frozen food, and good deals on ad items. I now am able to do about 90% of my shopping here. read more

I completely forgot how cool and convenient this store was! You can shop at wholesale cost without having to show proof of a resale certificate. I bought 50 pint sized chinese take out boxes for $4.99! If I were to buy these bad boys online at some other website, it's triple the cost. So forget shopping at wedding/party favor websites... It's all about going to Smart & Final!!!
