Our check engine light was on. Went to find out what the reason was and price to fix. We live in Wisconsin but were given outrageous reason and amount that made no sense at all! My daughter goes to Smart Auto and had sold us this car and we decided to come back here to have them check it and do the work. Dave and his help,were so helpful. First time, I have ever seen a mechanic with 5 star all across the board, and they all have the same common theme -honest, organized and experienced. I came in making sure a previous brake job done somewhere else, was done correctly due to some fluid leaking. David asked me questions upon arrival, took notes on all and said he will get back to me shortly. Came home and a few hours later I get a text message saying "Hi Peggy it's David" and with that, were multiple pics of the under carriage of my SUV. Every area that could pose a possible leak and even around it. I was in shock...I have NEVER had a mechanic bring me to my car while lifted to show me what they see and if/what the problem is let alone pics sent! This is when I knew that I made the best choice in coming here(thanks Yelpers!) and also that I will be a regular customer of David's. My friend recommended this facility to me. She claimed they were honest and straight forward. I called them after receiving an oil change price from a different place. I felt that place provided me an excessive quote. They said it was going to cost me $500.00. When I called this facility to provide them information about my car. They told me that I only needed an oil change because it was still in good condition and fairly new model (year 2016). I didn't need my engine to be flushed. I first encountered David when he was at that "Other Place." I was long overdue for a major tune-up on a car I purchased used and that was refusing to start when it rained. That's usually an indication. When I stopped by for a quote, I found him very easy to work with, honest and informative. At pick-up time, David explained very carefully what was done, why and any issues found. He charged exactly what they said for what I knew was a really nasty job on my particular car FAR less (like more than half less) than others wanted. I checked around. Also, his price and work for a "tune-up" included essential maintenance items like spark plugs, plug wires, distributor cap and rotor (where present), fuel filter, air filter, etc. If you are unsure what's included, be sure to ask, especially when comparing. A couple years later, my Check Engine light went on. I knew enough about cars to hook up a diagnostic reader and figure out what needed to be done. I first checked with the "Other Place" and was very disappointed to see that David was no longer there. Nonetheless, I asked for a quote but thought the price was excessive. $110 for labor for a 5-minute part change-out and $95 for a part I could (and eventually did) get online for $32. (I used to do my own work and still do some, but didn't have the right wrench for this simple job. And it was winter.) The manager, who was not especially personable, said that was the best he could do. But he unhappily agreed to let me get the part online and call back to arrange an appointment. Out of idle curiosity, I played with Google and was thrilled to find that David was still around and had opened his own shop about mid-2015 in Mount Prospect. It was farther away for me, but I stopped by, got his estimate and had him install the part for less than half that Other Place wanted. Saved a bundle. I have since moved out of the area, so don't know if I will be going back. But for those in the area, you are in luck and Smart Auto should without doubt be your go to place for car repair. read more
