One star is too many for them, we were trying to get a car from them on a Saturday at 2:45pm because we work too, however they weren't too happy to see us at that time because they close at 4 pm, right away he asked us "do you have an appointment?" We replied No, but we knew what we wanted and we had the money to pay for it so the transaction would not take long we just wanted to see the car and buy it right away! But like they say "You snooze you loose" He said okay let me bring the car which it was 3 months sitting there he comes back after 3 minutes and say oh I'm sorry "the car is in maintenance at this time and it will take an hour, do you want to come back Monday". We know that is a lie 120%, beside he did not even say we have other cars if you want to take a look at at or something like that. I never once felt pressure, and they treated me like a valued client even though I didn't have much to spend. Matt, Eric and Stephanie were all kind, friendly and informative while helping me with my trade-in and the purchase of a used Toyota Highlander. As a single woman over 60 who knows very little about cars, I felt intimidated--even though I had done a lot of research about which car to buy and about a fair price for my trade-in. I was putting off starting my search in person, but received a cold call from Matt one rainy day. He sounded so laid back, and he had the answers to all of my questions, so I went to Nelson's that afternoon. Matt had the Highlander pulled up in front for me when I arrived, and it was in great condition, just as advertised. I already knew it was priced well. I had the amount I would accept for the trade-in in my head, based on Edmunds and Blue Book analyses. Eric offered me exactly that price without knowing that I had any idea what a fair price would be. Was this too good to be true???? I thought buying a used car was supposed to be an epic struggle against greed and evil dressed up in fake smiles and fast talking. Matt and Eric were genuine and down-to-earth. Nelson's even includes a warranty! The only glitch during the sale was that my trade-in had an out-of-state title. Stephanie was very thorough and friendly, and they sent me the check for the trade-in the same day the title arrived. After reading all the positive posts I definitely have to agree about how this place is not like the usual car dealers and how great they are. But I have to add what might be an even better story about them. I bought a car that I saw on their website. I didn't even have to go there to see it as Matt brought it right to my house to see. Now it is two years later and I just had a great experience with them. My car failed the emission test after getting a new battery. I was told to drive it 100 miles and I drove 200, went back to retake the test and failed again! I decided to stop in and ask Matt about it and he immediately checked the car, said it just needed to do some highway driving and said they would do it and then check it out to make sure it would pass this third time. A week later I left the car with them, they took it on the road and checked it all out again. The story gets better... I mentioned the key lock on the front door didn't work and I had been told by my very good repair place that it would cost about $250 to fix it as the door had to be taken off. When I mentioned it now,Nelson's service dept. checked it out immediately and called to say they had the small parts it needed, they fixed it right away, and there was no charge!! Then they drove the car back to my house. Who does all that!! Dealing with all the staff there was very pleasant as they are all so friendly and smiling. They sure must enjoy their work. I absolutely hate car shopping. Unless you are a mechanic or a car dealer yourself, you are immediately at a disadvantage. Hey, this is fun! We can play "Let's Make A Deal" with someone who not only knows everything about the car they are selling (and you know nothing!), but are trying to trick and confuse you at the same time....yay! And so, the last 3 times I have bought a car, I really felt sick afterwards, like I just got run through the wringer and got totally ripped off (and one of those times was buying a car from my own sister!) But, when you wreck your car and need a replacement immediately, what are your options? I couldn't wait, but I also didn't have a ton of cash at my disposal either. So after many grueling days searching, searching, eliminating choices, and more searching online, in car lots and in car magazines, I finally stumbled across an ad from Nelson Auto. From the outside, Nelson auto looks like nothing, there is a tiny sign on the door and nothing to suggest any of the cars in it's lot are for sale, except for a "For Sale" sign where a license plate normally would be. The two guys that helped me, Matt and Eric, were actually OK, not cheesy or smarmy or saying crap to me like "honey, now which colour do you like the best and thats the one we will go with" (this was actually said to me at a dealer once). I found a car I liked, a 2003 Tiburon, and we agreed on a price. I think I may have paid about $300 more than I should have, since there are some issues with car that need repair (the car was sold "as-is"), but hey, $300 is nothing compared to the reaming I think I took back when I bought my Honda brand new. Plus, they were cool about giving me a part they had previously ordered for the engine and helping me with a license plate transfer problem. All in all, I am pretty pleased with Nelson - not that I am ever going to be a fan of buying cars, but at least I have a decent place I know I can go if I need them in the future. read more

First off I love the car I purchased. I didn't love that the dealer lied about the condition of the car. I assume the salesman was patronizing me because I was in my early twentites at the time. I needed a car so I bit the bullet and bought it. I noticed soon after that my ABS wasnt working when I tried to quickly stop at a yellow light. The car slid for about forty feet longer than it should have, so I immediately brought it to a mechanic. At the time I bought the car, the salesman at Nelson's assured me his mechanic gave it a thorough inspection, but my mechanic didn't miss that the car had no brake pads. My mechanic told me that the brake calipers were grinding on metal where the brake pads should be. He told me the car was extremely dangerous to drive. The ABS wasn't engaging because the tires weren't deaccelating fast enough. Buyer beware. read more

Back in November I decided I had to have a Prius. My car was still going strong but it was time to move to something better. I searched around, did my research and found an ad for a car at Nelson's. It had more miles than I would want on it and they had a lot of Prius's with low miles, just off lease. I decided to go for the higher mileage one, it was in amazing condition, and after haggling and the obligatory poker face, I got my price and wrote a check. After finding my dream car, Eric and Matt were very easy to work with while I waited to see if I was approved for financing from a teacher's credit union. They let me drive the car to show my parents and were really cautious with Covid19 and being safe. I've purchased three vehicles at this dealership. Everyone from the owner, salesman, to the service manager have been nothing short of great!! I recently had a major problem come up with one of my vehicles. The problem was long after my purchase and no fault of Nelson's. After trying to get the vehicle fixed in several places including out of state I thought! I'm going to call Matt at Nelson's where I purchased the vehicle. Matt immediately took action. I was out of state and not available. Matt said not a problem. I directed my son to get the vehicle over to Matt. This was Dec 23rd. Matt received my son and the vehicle and provided my son a ride to the train station so he could continue on with his day. Matt kept in contact with me with updates on the vehicle and my son! The problem took several days to fix, but the vehicle came through under extended warranty which the Service Manager Mike took care of for me. We returned from our out of state trip enjoyed our Christmas and the vehicle was ready for my son in time for him to drive back to college out of state. My son called me from school in Iowa to say the best gift he got for Christmas was his fixed car. He says it drives better now then it ever has! Thank you ! I bought a car from here and it was a 96 Mercedes and it was in the beginning of summer around the end of may and the car was covered in rust, black tape, the air conditioner doesn't work, there is a coolant leak, the windows creak horribly when letting them down, the breaks are bad, and the tires are bald. They sold me a car that wasn't worth as much as they over financed me for and threatened to take the car because I didn't have sufficient insurance. I would not recommend anyone buy a car for this place because they'll probably sell you a problem car. The check engine light was on and the engine electronics light was on. Ps. Hello everyone, How to describe my experience with the dealers ... First of all I must say I'm French and I purchased this vehicle from France. We therefore found a deal with Eric Nelson, the owner, and of course I made the bank transfer, and of course some days after I had the confirmation that they had received my money. The problem came when I received an email from Eric, a week later, telling me they were sorry but although they had my money, they had sold the car to someone else! Their defense was that Eric Nelson, unfortunately, was off and he did not pulled the car out of market... A week later with no news of the refund refund, Eric said "sorry but I was off again and I don't had time to go to the bank and refund you". A few days later I received my money in my account ... but not in full! Of course I claimed to get the total refund but... no answer to my email anymore... Clearly, a dishonest seller who seems more absent than present in his own business and who does not respect its commitments or its customers. To avoid ! read more

Purchased a 2003 Honda from Nelson Automotive in exchange for my 2000 Camaro plus $7k cash. Eric agreed to cut and turn rotors on front and back of the car. Replace all four brakes. 4 new tires. Change the timing belt - which we later learned didn't have a timing belt but a chain. The promise of documentation of repairs from previous owner and the above work that Nelson performed during our transaction, so that I could have maintenance records. Brake light came on and wheels kept grinding so I took it back to Nelson Automotive. They claimed brake lights was from a leaking caliper so would be additional cost to have replaced and that the grind I heard was in my head but they would cut the rotors again just to make good. Grinding continued. Contacted Nelson Automotive about the grind and documentation that was promised. Got the run around, told to bring it in and they would point out the new parts, but wouldn't send documentation. Told that the grind couldn't possibly be from the rotors as they had been repaired. Took the car to Firestone and shown the rusted rotors as the source for the grind. Filed a complaint with the BBB requesting documentation for repairs. Then received via snail mail a white sheet of typing paper with the words typed replaced brakes, turned rotors etc. with no letter head, no return address, no part description, no work order #, like it was a grocery list. Update I took my car to another mechanic and received written testimony regarding the condition: that none of the rotors had been cut or turned. (Matching Firestone's findings) The front two tires were new but the back 2 tires were not (but I paid for 4), the back brakes hadn't been touched (but I paid for replacement) old worn out pads still on brake shoes. Front brakes had been replaced but were not installed correctly and had missing bolts. Front right caliper leak was due to a damaged jammed caliper pin from when Nelson Automotive mechanic installed front brakes. Serpentine belt had not been replaced, and since the car had a timing chain and no need of replacement (but I paid for new timing belt). I would NOT recommend this business and will not be returning for any future car repairs or purchases. In Response to Nelson Automotive: You can make me happy. Pay me back the $900 I just shelled out to another mechanic for all new brakes, rotors, and a caliper. I've got the receipt. read more

We bought our Toyota Prius from Nelson Automotive last November. WE LOVE THIS CAR, but more importantly for this review, we LOVE Nelson Automotive. We'd gone to a few area dealerships and had negative experiences with salesmen trying to size us up, make assumptions about our means and needs based upon appearance. It was an annoying and depressing experience. We turned to the internet and found Eric and Matt. No frills, straightforward, respectful. What they stated on their website is EXACTLY what we got, both in terms of service, and the cars they were advertising. What a breath of fresh air. Yes, I understand that companies are in business to sell a product, but gone are the days when customers need to leave a transaction feeling duped. In this day and age when consumer confidence is low and confidence in competence of vendors is non-existent, Nelson Automotive gets it right. The drive for us was far from our South Side digs, but it was well worth it. I've known Eric since we were kids, so I always figured I'd go to Nelson Automotive when it came time to start car shopping. Eric has built up a very good reputation in our home town of Park Ridge. I know at least a dozen people who've had positive experiences buying cars from Eric, including my brother. My husband and I were buying our first car and were very nervous. DON'T BUY FROM HERE!!! Love the car... Hate the people for lying about everything. FIRST, After talking with the sales people they assured me the car was never in a prior accident. After recently taking it in for an estimate to trade it in, I was shown damage that was repaired in the rear. SECOND, They told me I could cancel the warranty at any time... YOU CAN'T CANCEL THE WARRANTY AT "Anytime" THIRD, They assured me they would do an oil change, change the brake pads, and all the regular maintenance for the car. They didn't do anything. I had to put new rotors and pads on because the car was barely stopping a few days after me buying it and also had to change the oil because it was way past due... Earlier this week I bought a 2005 Mini Cooper S from Nelson Automotive. I was very happy with my purchase until the engine temperature gauge started spiking into the overheat range in traffic this morning. I was a little worried that I'd get no sympathy from the dealer as cooling systems are not covered in the limited warranty that came with the car, but I called Matt as soon as Nelson Auto opened this morning, and he was not only extremely apologetic and understanding, he immediately started thinking of the best way to get the car back to them to have their mechanic take a look at it. He was willing to have it towed, but since I had noticed that I could keep the temperature from spiking by keeping the speed above 30mph, I said I'd drive it in (about 45 minutes from my work), choosing my route carefully to avoid unnecessary stop lights. He and I both thought it sounded like a problem with the thermostat, either stuck, or gasket leaking, or housing cracked. He said the mechanic (whose name I've forgotten... sorry!) would be able to look at it immediately and that they had a spare thermostat in stock to make the repair if it was necessary. I got there with no excessive temperature gauge spikes. While the mechanic was checking out the car, they let me sit at a spare desk and use their wireless to do some work (since I skipped out early to take care of this problem before my commute home). Very nice! It turned out that the thermostat was not to blame -- a radiator hose was loose, allowing coolant to leak out slowly. So after tightening that and topping up the coolant, they kept the car running in the garage for another 45 minutes to make sure the problem was solved. I drove the 30 minutes home with my eye glued to the gauge, and sure enough, it seems fixed. The needle sat solidly in the mid-range where it should be. Fixed! At no cost to me. As far as used auto dealers go, these guys are top notch. There's no high-pressure sales pitch, and they're not trying to sell you a lemon. I'm very impressed with the immediate positive response to my troubles, and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend them to anyone looking for a quality used car. read more
