Note: Smart Charge did finally rectify the problem. It took many hours of phone calls and emails to get them to come out and perform the original scope of work. The refund issued was for materials I was charged for that were never installed. I had originally selected Smart Charge back in August to install a NEMA 1450 wall outlet that was agreed to be installed at 50 amps. Little did I know what horrible experience this would be. After working with Scott from the sales office, Francisco came out and installed the NEMA-1450 outlet, but instead of following the agreed upon scope of work to install the 50 amp breaker, he instead installed a 40 amp breaker. After the install, a little under two months went by where charging worked as expected. Unfortunately this was short lived. The original NEMA outlet they installed completely melted and was unusable. As a result, my mobile connector, outlet, and most. Importantly, our house was put in danger. I contacted them and Amanda was quick to work with Kilian to schedule a warranty call to rectify the problem. Because the outlet melted, I asked them to install a Tesla Wall Connector which they were more than happy to accommodate. (they did charge me full price for the wall connector even with the melted NEMA outlet) and they scheduled the service call promptly. Justin, one of the inspectors for Smart Charge showed up and installed the wall connector. Unfortunately as the install progressed, he grew more frustrated with me questioning both why the NEMA outlet melted and how we were going to ensure this didn't happen again. He finally completed the the wall connector install using the same breaker and existing wiring in place but completely removed and took with him one of the existing wires (green 50ft ground wire) previously installed by Francisco during the original install. He failed to properly provision the wall connector before leaving. After the install, I reviewed everything that had occurred and realized Smart Charge had kept silent about the fact they had installed a 40 amp breaker instead of 50 amps which was originally agreed in the scope of work. I contacted Amanda and talked to her about the situation and possibility of getting Smart Charge to honor the original scope of work. The more the conversation progressed, the more uncomfortable she got about me calling them out on failing to honor the original scope of work and me discovering their mistake. I also asked her about the 50 ft ground wire Justin had removed and why that had occurred especially since I had payed for that wire as part of original installation. I was persistent and she finally got in touch with Kilian who reached out to attempt to rectify the situation. His proposition was for me to pay an additional $815 for a 60 amp breaker with the proper #6 thnn wire. I pushed them about the 50 amp breaker I had originally payed for and he agreed they would come out and install it but I would still have to pay a service fee. He also stated that the NEMA outlet should have never been used for daily charging. This was completely unacceptable and a complete contradiction as to what this company supposedly offers. Today Killian called me back and agreed they would come out and replace the 40 amp breaker with a 50 amp breaker. Meanwhile, Tesla contacted me and asked for feedback on the install and i explained the entire situation and I was informed it was completely unacceptable for them to not inform me that they were deviating from the original scope of work. I should have either been offered a refund or service visit weeks ago to rectify this problem. After reviewing the invoice, they also mentioned they should have used #6 thnn wire for the 50 amp install for the NEMA outlet instead of #8 and #10 thnn together. Smart Charge simply FAILED to honor their original agreed statement of work and instead, silently deviated from their original scope of work by installing the 40 amp breaker instead of 50 amps as promised. I would recommend doing lots of research before hiring this company to install an EV charging system. read more

I'm a new person to the world of electric vehicles. I needed a charger that could charge my BMW i3 from my house. I didn't want to clean out my garage, so I wanted a driveway solution. Joseph came out the next day and had multiple brands of Electric Vehicle Service Equipment (EVSE's) or chargers to show and demo. He presented me with three options of wiring. Rather than run electricy from one corner of my house to another for a 30A circuit, we found a happy medium with a 25A unit wired from my garage panel. Because of the multiple options of EVSE's available from Joseph, I found the best solution for my particular needs. Joseph also understands electric car issues like how many positions your car can get charged (driveway front in, driveway backed in, garage front in, etc.) and helped to find the ideal placement of the charger. The model I ordered had an ample 25' cord that allowed for multiple car parking options (like the driveway, so I didn't have to clean my garage). Joseph even mounted an additional charge holster outside of my garage, so I could hang the chare handle gracefully when charding from my driveway. I was between a couple of brands. Joseph helped me by noting that some models were more prone to service calls. Ended up with a Clipper Creek L2 charger that will fully charge my BMW i3 in about 3.5 hours. Also added a 120V outlet in my garage for convenience (other than car charging). Joseph was pleasant and fun to deal with all the way through the process. He is very knowledgeable. I went from initial phone call to L2 charging was about a week! :) Easy to deal with. No surprises. Bill matched estimate. Work was done quickly and on time. Carries full range of products. Smart Charge America's electrician cross connected (jumped) the Neutral and ground which is a fire hazard. - electrician cannot "jump the neutral" (connect the neutral and ground wires together) on a 250V, 4-prong NEMA 14-50 receptacle in most applications because it creates a safety hazard and violates electrical codes [1]. The NEMA 14-50 is designed as a 125/250V, four-wire system that requires separate paths for the two hot lines, the neutral wire, and the ground wire [1]. Electrical Codes and Safety Standards Safety Hazards: Connecting the neutral and ground wires (a "bootleg ground") allows current to flow on the ground wire during normal operation. The ground wire is intended only to carry current safely to the ground in the event of a fault, not as a normal current-carrying conductor [1, 2]. This creates a shock hazard, as touching the chassis or metal parts of an appliance could result in a severe electrical shock [2]. Code Violations: The National Electrical Code (NEC), which governs electrical installations in the US, strictly prohibits this practice in modern wiring systems [1, 2]. NEC 250.6(A) & (B) requires that grounding and bonding connections be made in a manner that prevents objectionable current from flowing on the grounding conductors [1]. NEC 250.118 outlines accepted types of grounding conductors, which must be run with the circuit conductors. Proper Configuration: The NEMA 14-50 plug and receptacle are designed to maintain separation between the neutral and ground conductors. The large round prong is for the ground, the U-shaped prong is for the neutral, and the two straight blades are for the hot lines (L1 and L2) [1]. read more

I purchased my Nissan Leaf at the end of 2014, and was using the standard 120v charger that came with the car. I figured I wasn't driving more than about 25 miles a day (I'm lucky to have a very short commute to work!), and the level 1 charger would fit my needs. I received an email from Nissan telling me that they were going to give me a level 2 home charging station free of charge. I was super excited, all I would have to cover was the cost of the install. The dealership where I bought my car had given me Smart Charge Residentials card, and told me they specialized in this type of installation. They were the first place I called. I called to basically just ask a few questions, and Joseph said that he was in my area, and came over within an hour. Instead of talking on the phone, we were able to discuss face to face. He measured my garage, asked some questions to figure out what would best fit my needs, and within a few hours sent me an estimate. When they came out to do the install I could not have been more impressed. They were in an out in about an hour and a half, the price was exactly what I was quoted, and the work was amazing, I can't imagine how I was driving without the level 2 charger all that time. Smart Charge America installed my EV charger in June 2024. My original invoice clearly included a city permit as part of the installation. What I didn't realize at the time was that they never actually submitted the permit. Starting in June 2025, I contacted the company to get a copy of it for my records. For nearly two months I went back and forth with their representative, Dovie, trying to figure out what happened and requesting that they complete it. I followed up repeatedly and got nowhere. After getting tired of chasing them, I finally gave up. Then today, eight months later, I received a call from Dovie saying they made an "error," were working "backwards," and that I now need to pay an additional invoice in order for the permit to be processed. So a permit that was already listed on my original invoice was never handled, and now they want more money to fix their mistake. I've attached a photo of the installation as well so others can see the quality of work for themselves. The entire experience, from paperwork to communication, has been frustrating and unprofessional. If you're looking for a company to install an EV charger, I would stay FAR away from Smart Charge America. read more

I had a very rocky start with them. I have a brand new house that should have been easy with the wiring. However, I had spray foam installed everywhere and made it harder to feed the wires into the attic. What was supposed to take 2-3 hours took 12+ hours. Making matters worse, the technician accidentally stepped on the garage roof and it had to be patched. However, it wasn't there fault about the new construction, and they could have easily given up. They were professional and committed to getting the job done. Although they patched the ceiling, it wasn't to my standard of quality, so asked them to do it again. They sent a professional to come repair the ceiling and you can't tell there was ever an issue. I can guarantee they did not make money on me, but I found they were extremely reliable and stuck to their word. They definitely wanted to "make things right" no matter the cost, and I was actually very impressed by this. I could easily be writing a review about the horror story of an installation, but I actually think this speaks to their character and reliability much more. Every interaction was spot-on. I asked several electricians for quotes on installing a Tesla wall connector, but Smart Charge America was an easy pick. Their website was easy to navigate and request a quote without any delay. The quote I received had 3 options with the pros/cons of each clearly explained. The option I chose was exactly what I paid. They were flexible with I changed my mind the day before the installation! They sent me a reminder of the appointment -- I had taken time off work and that confirmation was key to my scheduling. The electrician who arrived was communicative so I knew when to expect him, he obviously knew what he was doing, and was prepared with the wall connector in stock and in his van. He even offered to leave the box or take it with him if I didn't want it. He told me they will relocate the charger for free in the event I move. Finally, they invoiced me online for the bill and payment was a breeze. I've been working with a lot of contractors lately for electrical, landscaping, and painting lately and I am super impressed with how Smart Charge handles their business and customers. read more

The Smart Charge America team installed a home electric car charging station (the ChargePoint Home 25 Hardwire) for our new Nissan LEAF. The entire team was fantastic. I was able to fill out a quote form online by taking a few pictures of my electric fuse box and the location where I wanted the EVSE (charger) installed. I got a reply within minutes, a quote with three charger options within a few hours and the Smart Charge America team had finished the installation within two days - even before we actually took delivery of the car! Plus, they handled the rebate forms for us to receive money back from our local electric utility. When we bought the car, no one at the Nissan dealership knew much of anything about a home charger. Thankfully, the Smart Charge team knew everything. Really organized crew. Can't recommend them enough. I wish the Nissan dealership had a tenth the knowledge of these guys. The charger itself works great. It connects to the internet and I use the same App to check my home charger as well as all the public charging stations around Austin. Really great system. I reached out to Smart Charge America (SMA) based on their presence on Tesla's site for recommended electricians. We are set to receive our Model 3 any day now (woo!) and contracted with SMA to install a NEMA 14-50R outlet in our rent home. The staff who answered my phone calls provided all the details needed and the online quote system was easy to use. I provided the details of our rent house and supplied the pictures needed for SMA to establish the quote. They turned around a quote the next day and called again to answer all my questions. Once we scheduled the install, the technician was very knowledgeable and friendly and did great work. Unfortunately, he discovered that our house we are currently renting had a very old breaker box in the garage that needed a new part. However, the technician was able to locate the part in town and picked it up and installed it all in the same day. We look forward to hiring SMA again in the future when we are able to purchase a home of our own. read more

I contacted several companies about installing a "level 2 home charging station" for my new electric car. Some didn't know what I was talking about, and some sounded like they didn't know what THEY were talking about. Joseph, at Smart Charge Residential, was the only person who knew exactly what I meant, and also helped me understand my options. I hired SCR to install the system. They were able to work me into their schedule so that the system would be up and running by the date I requested. I really appreciated that. I have used the charging station for about 2 months now. It works great--fully charges my car in about 3 hours. It looks nice. The installation was professional. The installation of the charger was completed to a good standard, and the work itself looks satisfactory. However, the experience with the finance department has been highly disappointing. They required an advance payment exceeding the actual installation cost, with the promise to refund the difference. Unfortunately, despite repeated follow-ups over the past month, the refund has not been processed, and I continue to receive vague and inconsistent explanations as to why it hasn't been resolved. Superb service! Professional, prompt, affordable and friendly. Cliff Black, an EV charger trained electrician, installed a 50 Amp protected NEMA 14-50R aka the "Dryer" outlet in my garage. This is not real electric company. You will be paying extra money for no reason. They will just hire random company/people in your area and pay them little money to do the job. I wish I hired local company instead for half price. Don't trust warranty stuff. Tesla website misleading with star rating. it looks like they have five star but when you click on it it takes you to yelp where you can read people having same issues.
