My A/C was blowing warm air. I put in a call to my home warranty company and Smartchoice was the company that would provide the service. I called the company at about 9a and spoke with Oscar. I was fortunately able to get same day service and given a window period of 10a-2p. You receive a text when the technician is close. Sergei arrived between 11:30 and noon. He quickly found the problem to be the "Run Capacitor". It was replaced, he ran the system and my home was cool again. I even received a follow-up call from Oscar checking to make sure all was well. Gerard was friendly and professional. He explained what repair was needed for our failing AC unit, and was able to accomplish the repair on site in a timely manner. The service call was through our home warranty with FAHW so the set price was fair. I would recommend Gerard at Smartchoice if you are using your home warranty. UPDATE: AC is fixed! Fan and motor were repaired. No box upgrade. 4/14 -FAHW's contractor relations dept told me they had spoken to SmartChoice & they were now claiming the upgrade was for my box being out of code. I had a claim specialist from FAHW on the phone who could not explain what was out of code with my box, only that my warranty will cover $250 of the upgrade per my contract re code violations, and I had to agree to pay $124 or else the fan repair could not be scheduled. 3-way-called SmartChoice and was eventually connected with supervisor Sophia after a back and forth with Oscar. Sophia was apologetic about my experience & explained the upgrade was recommended by the tech due to code concerns. I looked up code(NEC 440.10 and 440.14) and went down the list of criteria for acu disconnect boxes while I had both on the phone and she could not definitively say how my box was out of code and only that the upgrade was a recommendation they made to my warranty company, not a REQUIREMENT. She stated that FAHW insisted on classifying the upgrade as required, SmartChoice did not & that they were fine repairing just the condenser fan. She stated that before she could schedule the technician to return to complete the fan repair, I would need to remove my review. I told her I would not and asked if that means she would not schedule the repair? She stated that what I posted was untrue as they have tried to help move the repair along. I reiterated I would not and that I was careful to only include factual details in my review. I asked again, "so the repair will not be scheduled if I don't remove my review?" She said she would schedule it, but would appreciate my cooperation. (That'd be a violation of California Civil Code § 1670.8 if she didn't) Their tech, Gerard, was scheduled to return to my home on 4/15. He began replacing the condenser fan motor and explained the fan itself was rusted and he would need to return 4/16 to complete repair. I was able to meet Gerard on 4/16 and asked him why an upgrade to a fusible disconnect box was included in his report that was sent to my warranty company/FAHW. He said he did not recommend it be upgraded and that he might have noted the box is loose and missing screws. (The box is not loose nor is it missing screws from what I saw). I told him that I went on my roof to verify it was a fusible box and that it was up to code. He said there may have been miscommunication with what he reported because there was another call that day that had melted fuses in their box. $379 bc of a miscommunication is WILD. update to 2 stars since the repairs completed. read more

Thank God for sending over Sergei from Smartchoice -- I would have to say this is the Best, most honest & professional AC repair company ever! Sergei quickly diagnosed the problem within the first 2 minutes - he was very intelligent, efficient honest, efficient & knowledgeable! We were literally miserable in the humid/hot days & heat waves over the past 2.5 years, with only hot air blowing out of the AC. It was literally uninhabitable and I would work overtime at work (which has AC) to stay out of our sweaty & sweltering home because of this. Smartchoice was a breath of fresh air after the horrible experiences with prior unprofessional AC companies who sent really unqualified, unprofessional and unsavory "technicians" who lied about fixing things, tried to upsell and price gouge us, and were actually incompetent (and this is me describing it nicely). They came for my warranty claim on range hood. Usually it's a struggle to get warranty jobs done efficiently but I was very satisfied with Smartchoice. I wish I remember the technician's name so I can mention him specifically. He was able to diagnose the problem immediately and instead of going the bureaucratic way of going back and forth with my warranty company, he went ahead with fixing the problem on the spot. He was able to correctly diagnose that I didn't have a motor failure (which was told to me by a previous contractor) but a simple tightening of the motor housing would fix the problem. My range hood was custom made so it would have been a headache to try to get new matching motors. I'm so thankful for their genuine care and professionalism. It's hard to find contractors who actually cares nowadays. They deserve a great review. read more
