This review is more about the interactions with SmartRoof staff and the company's business model. It is not about the quality of workmanship, since I did not end up having them do any work. In short, SmartRoof employs a lot of young professionals that are motivated and can come across as somewhat pushy. The business model has these salesmen walk through neighborhoods and knock on doors. They'll ask for permission to give you a free roof inspection. Afterwards, they'll show you all kind of pictures highlighting hail damage and other supposed problems. They tell you that they will help file a claim with your insurance company, be at your house when the adjuster comes to inspect so they can help convince them of the need for a new roof, and in the end, all you need to do is cover the deductible. Basically, it's a model built on getting insurance companies to buy you a new roof. My problem is twofold: 1) they pretty much would not leave me alone until I got my ins. company to inspect the roof; and 2) once my ins. company sent a 3rd party (another roof company) to do an independent inspection that found minimal damage, I could not get my SmartRoof point of contact to return a text, answer a call, or return a voicemail. On the first point, my salesman (Luis) sent me impersonal text messages just about every other day telling me I needed to file a claim, schedule an appointment with the adjuster, and let communicate with him about the details. It was borderline irritating. Moreover, during that time, I had multiple other people from SmartRoof with no apparent knowledge of my dealings with Luis calling and knocking on my door as though I hadn't ever met anyone from SmartRoof before. The second point is self explanatory. Luis fell off the face of the Earth after he learned the independent 3rd party didn't agree with his assessment. I have a neighbor that had a very similar experience. I don't even really care that SmartRoof gave me a different opinion that the 3rd party. What I care about is the total lack of professionalism on the part of Luis and his colleagues. read more

Our experience with SmartRoof was simply phenomenal. They replaced our roof, siding, gutters and trim with fantastic results and top quality. They showed up on time, completed the work on schedule, and cleaned up thoroughly. Whenever I raised an issue with a foreman, they were always polite, respectful, and willing to address the issue. Periodically I would walk around the house and observe their work. They were extremely hard working even in extreme heat. Nik was outstanding with guiding us through the insurance process. He was always friendly, professional, and on time to every appointment. He explained everything competently and ensured all paperwork was submitted in a timely fashion. Peter was fantastic to work with as a project manager. He stayed in touch throughout the entire job. He was available on the weekends and evenings to discuss the project and our concerns. There were a few minor issues during the job, but he ensured everything was resolved quickly and to our satisfaction. His inspections were thorough and caught a pre-existing issue with rot in the soffit. Thanks to Peter our house is now in much better shape due to his proposed solutions. SmartRoof admits they are not the cheapest, though I will say they demonstrated some flexibility and a willingness to figure out what could work with our budget. When it comes to something as important as roofing/siding/gutters, you want quality workmanship that will last for decades. I would definitely choose SmartRoof again for their warranty, quality, aesthetics, price, responsiveness, customer support, attention to detail, and guidance throughout the process. Scammers! We were told repeatedly how much we would have to pay out of pocket. We agreed. We worked with our insurance company, and got a good portion of their work covered. However, when the smoke cleared, the remaining balance was almost $5,000 more than what we were told we would have to pay. Our insurance company has paid and so have we. And, of course, now I can't get in touch with the original salesperson, nor the project manager. Everyone just hands off to the next person and now we are being harassed by their accounts department for the balance. We are not giving them another dime! read more

We love our new roof with SmartRoof! Installation was only a day, the crew and office staff were always professional, and everyone was very knowledgeable about working with insurance. JJ and Kenny were particularly great at different parts of the process. You might have to wait a while - we had them check our roof for potential service in August, and we finally got our roof in March - but I have found that to be the case with most contractors during Covid. Our roof looks far better than other newer roofs in the neighborhood, and thanks to SmartRoof we paid less. Worth a call! read more

My experience with SmartRoof was exceptional in every regard from initial consultation to completion of a new roof for my 30-year-old single-family home. I chose SmartRoof because a trusted friend signed a contract for her new roof with the company and was especially impressed with how effectively the SmartRoof representative worked with her homeowners insurance to process the claim for hail damage. I had an identical experience - Laura successfully handled the entire claim process for me. The next step was an in-home meeting to review my options to choose the new roof materials - easy and informative. There were no hidden costs nor pressure to add what I didn't need or want for my new roof. Kenny Howard, the project manager, and Zach Swallow were both great to work with. Kenny checked in with me frequently, returned my calls promptly, dropped by for several site visits, and managed the skilled crew. The project took two days because I had additional work completed - replacement of rotten trim around the perimeter of the roof with aluminum cladding. Everything went smoothly, including take-down and re-install of my new gutter filter system and repair of a large hole in the roof that had caused water damage to the ceiling of my garage. It began with someone knocking on our door. They said that we had damage on our roof from a storm. They said that we needed a new roof. They said that we needed to call the insurance company. We did. We asked that the insurance company verify. The inspector from Smartroof said that we needed a total roof replacement and had extensive damage. The insurance company at first said that we did not have any roof damage. But later, came back and told us that there was some damage and that out of kindness we would be given a roof replacement. Thus, we scheduled with Smartroof. Mr. S from Smartroof came to explain the process to us and discuss the agreement. As we had just placed Gutter Helmet on our gutters, we were concerned about if they would be reinstalled properly. Mr. S assurred us that the Gutter Helmet would be reinstalled properly and that there would be no problem as Smartroofers are professional roofers. Well, towards the end of the visit with Mr. S. he took his computer and pointed it towards my husband and said he needed his signature. My husband pointed at the computer screen and asked to read the contract. Mr. S. pulled the computer back and said that it was just a standard contract. My husband's signature looks like a dot with a small line on the screen! In any case, we needed a roof and Mr. S continued to assure us that we would be fully satisfied with our roof and interior work. Mr. S told us we had to write a check as down payment for over $6000. We were assurred that one of two women from smartroof would contact us within the following week to coordinate the roof replacement, coordinate the design team to visit our home for paint samples and rebuilding of our shelf. Our insurance company paid money for room take down and reset and that was to be coordinated too! After several weeks from writing this check, not one person from Smart Roof contacted us. I began calling Smartroof and leaving messages, but no call back. Finally, I emailed that I was about to report this as fraud and file a complaint, and within an hour, Smartroof called me back. They apologized and said that our file had gotten lost in the shuffle and that communication would be much better in the future. But this did not happen. We spent hours and hours of trying to reach someone with assistance in scheduling the paint color team (which never was provided by Smartroof in the end), We had to do the leg work ourselves, during our vacation and holiday time with family! For the time I should have been credited back from Smartroof! Then, the roof was placed on late. Our shingles didn't arrive on time. We had caulking spilled onto the patio. We had nails, roof paper, cigarettes (we do not smoke), fast food packaging strewn about our property. Still finding nails and roofing paper and metal wrapping in my bushes and grass. The interior paint was not completed and we had to have the painters return to finish painting. They completely left areas unpainted. They left splash (like drips) of paint all over our fireplace insert and along the edges of the floor of the room and the wooden foot trim! The did fix the paint and remove the caulking. But, now when it rains, the rain spills over the gutter helmet and falls onto the window sills. I have notified Smartroof and will update this review depending upon how they respond. For now, my recommendation is DO NOT USE SMARTROOF. They claim superior service, but charge slightly more than other roofers. And communication is very poor. We will see how they respond to complaints. I am worried that the person sent (Mr. S) made false claims to us, but that will be determined when SmartRoof responds to my Gutter Helmet problem. They handled all aspects of working with the insurance company, and I am very pleased with the new roof and the quality of their products and craftsmanship. It is important to be at home during the work, as the roofers were not adequately informed on all of the various aspects of the contracted work. However, the company was very responsive and promptly addressed the miscommunication issues. He helped us identify hail damage to our roof and worked with a very reluctant insurance company to get approval for a roof replacement. This took some time, mainly due to the slow speed of the insurance company. Once approved, Adam Groves was very helful in helping us uderstand the timeline and possible upgrade requests. It then took a couple of weeks to secure materials and Project manager Richard Shanley was on point once the project was assigned a date. SmartRoof initially approached requesting to inspect my siding for possible replacement and insurance coverage. My initial thoughts were "I don't need this and ambulance chaser" but I let them do it. USAA verified the need for work so I hired them to replace all the siding on the home. To my surprise, they did a great job. They probably had 3-5 different supervisors/program managers on the job with a crew of about 8. They arrived and departed on schedule and cleaned up after each day's activity. The work was professionally done - including some repair work to window frames I needed. Their additional costs were reasonable and discussed with me upfront before conducting any new work. The entire process from initial meeting to the final day of installation does take time (several months) but the actual onsite work was smooth and complete. WOW! I spoke to an accounts receivable woman today in the Fairfax Office regarding my roof repair to clarify payment that I discussed with my project manager. She was very aggressive from the start and unprofessional. She ended the call with "I hope your roof falls through" and hung up the phone on me. We established a relationship immediately(and I am no push over, trust me) which gave me peace of mind that this team was legitimately trying to help me! Smartroof was instrumental in helping us to secure the best possible payment from our insurance company for a replacement roof due to hail damage. After determining that we had damage, they sent a representative back out to be present when our insurance company examined the roof. Following the insurance claim they filed a supplemental claim for items not included. The sales representative, Patrick, listened carefully to our needs and did not try to up-sell us. We were pleased when a team was available to install our roof ahead of the projected estimate. The crew cleaned up well after the job was completed. We had just a small damage to a window screen - our project manager, Thomas, handled the repair quickly and to our satisfaction. The entire process went well. My roof was being replaced as part of the sale of our home. Unfortunately SmartRoof moved at a snails pace and the work wasn't completed until I was in another state. Once the contract was signed, the level of communication from SmartRoof to me quickly diminished. While each person was pleasant when you spoke with them, there was negligible follow through and it was necessary for me to call them multiple times to obtain information. After taking my initial deposit, two weeks later they still hadn't scheduled a start date. After being told by multiple people the project would be expedited, I was then told it would be 3 months before they could take care of this one day project. This forced me to make numerous additional calls to get the project moved up. When I would call and/or text my project manager, more times than not I wouldn't receive a response. When I finally did, I was told someone else was the project manager and would reach out to me. This never happened. Not surprising, now that the project is complete, an accounting person reaches out to me each day for payment! Bottom line: poor communication and move at a snails pace. SmartRoof did an absolutely phenomenal job in every aspect! Charlie Price was an absolute wizard at working with our insurance company-- he knew all the right questions to ask, pictures to take and worked with our insurance company. The result was a roof that had been damaged by a hail storm was covered and nearly all the expenses paid. We used the opportunity to upgrade the roof (that was out of our pocket at a reasonable cost-- the baseline roof was 100% covered thanks to SmartRoof). Charlie was polite, professional and his follow through was terrific. Likewise, our Project Manager, Lucas Williams, did a terrific job with a seasoned installation crew. Lucas and his team dealt with a significant equipment failure quickly and professionally. The entire roof and gutter system was replaced in two days-- it looks fantastic and I feel really good about the gold level protection. I don't think I will ever have to worry about our roof again. I have already referred SmartRoof to two of my colleagues on the job, and to one of my neighbors. Two competitors tried to steal us away while the insurance paperwork was pending-- they were promising to do things that were unethical-- I sent them packing. The SmartRoof folks did everything above board and with absolute transparency. I am happy to refer them without hesitation for any roofing and gutter replacement job. SmartRoof was contacted by us to install a new roof. Because of the pitch of our roof, we're assuming the roof installation was done properly. We can't get into our attack to check for leaks. We have not seen any water damage inside our home. SmartRoof also replaced 2 existing skylights and added new wooden frames for them. During the removal of our old roofing materials, shingles and nails tore holes in 2 of our window screens, the screen of 1 sliding door and put multiple scratches on another glass sliding door. One of the window screens and the sliding door screen were replaced on site the day of the install. The 2nd window screen took over 2 weeks to be replaced. We were told somebody would be here on 11/28/2020 to apply a product to our scratched sliding door but nobody showed up. We were also informed that SmartRoof is not responsible for painting the 2 wooden frames of the new skylights. The frames are unsightly. They look like plain old lumber with knots in them. We now have to pay a contractor to paint these frames. SmartRoof's follow up work is not satisfactory in my opinion. read more

I selected SmartRoof to replace the shingles on my roof based on a recommendation from a friend and the good online reviews. I was pleased with my interaction with SmartRoof's project coordinator JJ. He answered all my questions and was professional throughout the process. I wish I could have given them a 5 star but selected a 3 for three main reasons. One, the work crew started the work on September 4th and worked well into the evening on both the 4th and 5th. I had no issues with them working till dusk but did not want them to continue to work when it is totally dark out, which they did. I ended up turning a spot light on outside so they could somewhat see. I question how good of a job one could do when you can barely see in front of you. My second issue was the poor cleanup. There ended up being quite a bit of debris left behind I cleaned up myself including old shingle pieces, roofing nails and tar paper around the house, on the deck and in the bushes by the house. The final issue that really bothered me was an email from SmartRoof I received over three weeks after the work was completed stating, "Within the next few days, our quality assurance representative Nick will be by for a final inspection. This will include a final review of the work, a thorough cleanup, photos and the finalizing of paperwork and payments. " Really? Three weeks after the work was completed you decide to do a walk through and cleanup? How about the day after the work was completed, not after I personally cleaned up everything myself. In a response to the email about the final inspection, I ask if the inspector Nick could call me. Needless to say I never heard from him. So in the end I was not as satisfy as I first had hoped and thus the 3 stars. read more

Watch out for this company's dishonest sales tactics to get you to sign up with them. Our roof was damaged (missing tiles) in multiples places from the recent storms and we were having a hard time getting roofing companies to come out to give us quotes for the repair because they are already way behind with their current committed work. But we did manage to get a quote that covers multiple damage areas on the roof but they won't commit to a repair date. Then came Eric the sales rep from Smart Roof at our door telling us how he inspected and saw that there is a lot of damage to our roof and we should file a claim with our insurance company, and he (Smart Roof) will help us work with the insurance company to make sure all of the damages will be covered and repair the correct way. He went on saying his company is started by ex-IT people and "they are white collar people working in a blue collar environment", and that they work professionally and will "over communicate". He continued to say in order for them to help us, it is essential that he or a Smart Roof person be present at the Insurance company inspection as they will help identify the damages they discovered and ensure the inspector will cover all of them. We were not thinking about filing a claim until Eric suggested that we should because of the amount of damages he saw on our roof. So we filed a claim and scheduled an inspection date where the insurance inspector, Smart Roof Rep. and I was home. Oliver from Smart Roof got to our house before the insurance inspector and he introduced himself saying he will be doing the inspection with the insurance inspector, and that he saw more damages than what Eric had documented. I told Oliver to go ahead and let me know what is the result of the inspection. The inspection took 40 minutes and here is where things go downhill. Oliver left without saying anything at all, then a couple of days later, we received the assessment from the insurance company where it only covers 3 replacement tiles in only one of the damaged areas. So I forwarded the insurance assessment to Smart Roof (Jake) and asked what happened during the inspection. At the same time, I also called the insurance inspector back asking why his assessment does not cover all of the damages, he told me Oliver (Smart Roof rep) agrees with his assessment. The insurance assessment was way below our deductible so the insurance company closed our claim and now we will lose our no claims discount. Meanwhile, no reply from Jake or anyone from Smart Roof so I called their office and got someone there, I told her I sent Jake the insurance assessment and she confirmed he is the correct person to send to. Then she told me Jake did not get back to me because their computer system is down. Then I asked to speak to Oliver, and it was clear that both Jake and Oliver were in the office but did not want to speak with me so the woman told me that they will talk and get back to me. So no reply again, my husband called Jake the next morning, again no reply from Jake but Eric did called back and told him "their best guy Oliver was with our Insurance Inspector and they did not find enough damages (so they reduced it to hardly anything??), that we should contact them if we do get major damage in the future". So what happened to all those damages that Eric and Oliver saw before the inspection ???????????? Eric must be on something when he thinks we will ever consider working with them again. BEWARE !!!!!! Just in case Smart Roof respond to this review saying the name of this post is not one of their customers, my husband is on record with them and this review is from both of us. read more
