No matter what the Seattle Metro Online Trip Planner tells you... DO NOT take the 106 from the ID to get to Smarty Pants (channeling Chris Rock... "No matter what the stripper tells you...)! I should totally review the Metro Trip Planner for this experience... dropping me off on the opposite side of I-5 AND in the ghetto. But, this is a review of Smarty Pants. After my trip planning fiasco and a call to someone I knew would be in front of a computer so they could map it out, I found my way to Smarty Pants... my lunch destination for this afternoon. I've been here once before, but it was en route to pinball, so I didn't really take note of it. I had the Flipper, it was okay... that's all I remember. Today, I walked in a grabbed a seat at the bar. The barstools are secured to the floor, too far away from the bar itself for comfort. I thought several times of moving to a table. The girl greeted me right away, then went to clear some tables before getting me a menu. No big deal. I'd noticed that winter beers were $3 so when she finally asked if I wanted something to drink, I ordered a Cold Nose. She allowed me to have a sample first. Pretty tasty stuff. When I picked up the glass, it was still wet and slipped out of my hand, spilling behind the bar. She freaked out. I thought it'd spilled on some electronic gadgetry or something with the way she was flipping out, but it turns out it was onto a stack of napkins. Slightly overboard, I think, perhaps. I apologized, but there really wasn't anything else I could do. She seemed frustrated with me in taking my order, but warmed up a little bit later. I also wasn't offered another beer, even though mine was less than half full after the spill. I ordered a Troublemaker sandwich... without bacon. Consists of sliced grilled chicken, lettuce, tomato, monterrey jack cheese, and some spicy sauce on the most awesome, soft french bread. The sauce was VERY spicy, even for the Texan in me. I always seem to have bad luck with bread to insides ratios, though... and today was no different. There was a lot more bread than insides, and the insides kept falling out. Potato salad on the side was pretty yummy. I ended up taking more than half of the sandwich home. As I was almost finished with my less than half full beer, she brought me a replacement. It just seems strange that it wasn't immediately reconciled. I'm deducting a star for that. And one for the completely inappropriate freak out over spilt beer. Overall, an okay experience, I guess. I don't plan on going out of my way to come back here unless going to pinball again, with the peeps. read more

Ahh Smarty Pants, I regret not visiting you as much as I could have in the time I've been in Seattle. I apologize, as it was more of me not wanting to drive for a visit than forgetting about your existence. It had been over a year since our last get together, when dad was in town and I was dating that one guy, gosh I can't remember his name. Anyway, not important. What IS important is that I brought company with me this time too, and made him a fan at first bite. We decided to try brunch (all I have ever had was beer and sammiches). He ordered the Tex Hex and I ordered...I can't remember the name of the dish. His was scrambled eggs with homemade meat chili, and mine was scrambled eggs with tortilla chips and salsa all mixed in...and sour cream, glorious sour cream. Not having any meat in my dish, I decided to order up American's favorite - bacon. My food was delicious, I savored every bite. The eggs were scrambled perfectly and the slight soggy-crunch of the tortilla chips was a great compliment to texture to the eggs. The salsa in the eggs was very flavorful and fresh, and the bacon....next to The 5 Point, I think it's the best breakfast bacon in town. My fiance loved his meal. The scrambled eggs with the chili and then jalapenos (I wasn't so sure about it until I tried it, and it was amazing), he ate every bite of it. He was salivating over my bacon, so I gave him a few pieces (okay, he wasn't salivating, but he loves bacon just as much, if not more-so, than I do). The service was friendly and quick, the coffee hot and constantly refilled. I'm hoping to get brunch once more before I pack it up and leave this town. I have been here quite a few times, since I work walking distance away. I love their brunch! It's delicious... Vegetarian biscuits and gravy, tofu scramble, and last time I was there, in addition to mimosa's they had a lemonade cocktail. YUM! The taco salad is a good choice when I end up there for lunch or dinner. The salads are big and I have heard of people going there just for the meatloaf. Cool atmosphere too... Never judge a dive bar by its "divey-ness!" This hole in the wall serves wonderful food in a no-nonsense setting (ages 21 and over) in funky Georgetown. Before our dinner, we'd had a beer at the nearby Georgetown Brewing tasting room, so I ordered coffee at Smarty Pants. It was fresh and hot and the servers brought plenty of refills. But the real draw was the fact that Smarty Pants is owned by former Chicagoans and offers some classic Chicago-style sandwiches. Case in point: a Chicago-style Italian beef sandwich, served wet (with lots of juice), sweet peppers and spicy giardiniera. My photo of this sandwich doesn't do it justice. The generous portion of beef was seasoned just right and delightfully sloppy (thus, the fact that it was tightly wrapped in foil). Smarty Pants' version of giardiniera packed a serious punch. When I make Chicago-style Italian beef at home (I grew up in Chicago), I use the mild Marconi brand. So on a return trip to Smarty Pants, I'd ask if I could hold or decrease the giardiniera and get more of the sweet peppers. But other than that, this sandwich was superb. And kudos for including a big dill pickle, too. My side order of coleslaw, described on the menu as "cool and creamy," was actually bland and dry. But my husband raved about the housemade potato salad that came with his tuna sandwich. My son really liked his burrito with eggs and chorizo. I noticed that the menu here also includes a Taylor Street Italian sandwich (Taylor Street being the heart of Chicago's old Italian neighborhood). That could also be interesting the next time we're in Georgetown. read more

My friend from work and I ventured to Airport Way as usual to scope out the usual suspects, but decided to try out Smarty Pants, new to us. High ceilings, dark corners, and an industrial vibe fit right in with the character of Georgetown. Service was nice, but it took too long to get food. People-watching is actually pretty interesting here...you can tell they definitly have locals who come in here quite a bit, along with the requisite hipsters in tight clothing. A totally good choice for drinks, but I'm not sold on the food. read more

Fantastic sangwiches and very good potato salad my friends. The Troublemaker is about as good as it gets and everytime I have one, I wanna get another for the next day's breakfast. Very friendly folks that serve you and the only place in Georgetown with an outside patio (and a very good one at that. The tiny one at Stellar's doesn't count). Georgetown hipsters and/or bikers abound here after dark, during the day for lunch it's the typical Boeing/work crowd. read more

3.5 Stars There aren't many options in Georgetown and Smarty Pants is one of them. It's a decent spot, though I (perhaps arbitrarily) usually prefer 9 Lb Hammer. The patio is nice, in fact I don't think I've ever really hung out inside. It's covered and there's a fire pit of sorts so this is an all-season patio*. The menu is mostly sandwiches and a few salads and appetizers. The hummus appetizer is surprisingly tasty and enough food that I had it for dinner once. I wanted to show my boyfriend Georgetown on our last trip to Seattle so we had dinner and drinks at Smarty Pants. What prompted me to finally review this place was the somewhat strange experience we had with the waitress. My friend and I decided to split a sandwich. I asked if it was toasted, since I wanted to take the cheese off. My friend asked if the coleslaw (side option) was very mayo-y. The waitress told me that the sandwich was NOT toasted and she told my friend that that coleslaw was NOT very mayo-y. So we get our food and lo and behold, the sandwich was indeed toasted and the coleslaw sat in a puddle of mayonnaise. The sandwich wasn't too cheesy so I ate it anyways, and I personally thought the coleslaw was just fine. But, either the waitress wasn't familiar with the menu and made up answers, or she was familiar with the menu and lied to us. Either way, not the best service experience. I guess you should stick with drinks if you have any questions about the menu at Smarty Pants. Who knows what they'll tell you. *Boy do I miss Seattle. There's no such thing in MN, where I live now, and where you can literally use your porch as a second freezer during the winter. In fact, it will soon be much, much colder than a freezer. Seeing as I take the 1 to 5 star rating system EXTREMELY SERIOUSLY I will present a detailed breakdown of my last experience at Smartypants in order to present an unbiased and fully complete review of this establishment. Reviewing is serious business, people. The criteria analyzed in this review include ambiance, servers/service, food quality, beer selection, efficiency and price. Each of the aforementioned criteria will be analyzed separately, and will be weighted according to importance in the final restaurant valuation. Let me begin... AMBIANCE - 4 Stars. Unique motorcycle-theme bar/restaurant. SERVERS/SERVICE - 3 Stars. Seems like they hate their jobs, and aren't very attentive or friendly. But they're cute so it's not too important. FOOD QUALITY - 3 Stars. I find the sandwiches about average quality, but the potato salad and chips/salsa to be quite delectable. BEER SELECTION - 5 Stars. Georgetown Brewing. Enough said. PRICE - 3 Stars. A little high for what you get. There are better comparables in the Georgetown market for the same or cheaper price. Next, I will weight the criteria above by their importance in my overall restaurant evaluation, then calculate an adjusted star value based on each of the criteria's specific weighting. The sum of the adjusted star values with reveal my final star rating. AMBIANCE: 10% x 4 stars = 0.4 stars SERVERS/SERVICE: 10% x 3 stars = 0.3 stars QUALITY: 30% x 3 stars = 0.9 stars BEER SELECTION: 20% x 5 stars = 1 star PRICE: 30% x 3 stars = 0.9 stars The total of the adjusted star values equals 3.5 stars. Tonight we went the the haunted house at 9pm on Friday night. Stopped by the 9lb hammer for a drink. Then we went to Smarty Pants for a drink and food. After serving my wife a gin and tonic it was taken away after she had a sip. My wife then refused her sandwich because it had tomatoes on it and she is very allergic to tomatoes and they said they would call the police if she didn't pay for the food. We told them she was allergic to tomatoes and could not eat it and finally they agreed to go remake . I loved this place the half dozen times before but thatis was uncalled. The waitresses reasoning for refusing her was because she apparently put her head down. My wife had been up since 6am and was tired. Furthermore, we had a designated driver. This was was refused her second drink of the night at 10:30. WTF, Their (tattoo lady) reason is she laid her head on the table for a few seconds, OMFG, she has been up since 6am, we had been up all day working, it's 10:30pm she's tried, not drunk, not even close. We are done with Smarty Pants. Good Luck Did not receive an apology of any sort such as: I'm sorry you had a bad experience, we prefer to err on the side of caution. Please come back and try us again. It was extremely humiliating for my wife to be cutoff on her second drink (first at this bar) of that very young evening. Yes, we did love the sandwiches the many times in the past here but now they have left a sour taste. Justified and self-preserving respond received: "If a patron appears intoxicated it is our legal obligation to not serve them and/or to remove what has been served. There are many signs we look for and resting your head on the table is a big one. Even with a designated driver we can't serve any one we suspect has been over served. Liquor Control pays us a weekly visit, they go from table to table and check ID's (literally). If someone doesn't have their ID or appears intoxicated the bar tender and the business owner get fined, or worse. If there is an accident or DUI the business is held accountable. We take our responsibility for our patron's safety seriously. Just like someone in your profession, we in the hospitality industry have the full weight of the potential consequence . This is not a personal attack but a procedure designed to keep everyone safe including designated drivers." read more

BFF had been telling me about a "bacon martini"--and I decided I had to try it. One of my favorite places to get a beer and sandwich in Seattle. The Pit Boss is a must eat! Inside seating can be limited during busy times, but it is rarely a problem. During the summer there is ample outside seating. They always have a great selection of local beers on their rotating taps. I was most recently introduced to and fell in love with Trade Route Brewery's Sumatra Stout. The staff have always been awesome whether I have been sitting at the bar or at a table. I had what they claimed to be "the best French Dip you'll ever have". It wasn't (Houston's in Atlanta will ALWAYS hold that title), but this one was pretty good. The ambiance is unique (the owners are obsessed with motorcycles and even advertise viewings of the Moto Grand Prix races every Wednesday) and Georgetown is such a cool area. I had brunch at Smarty Pants this past sunday. It was fantastic!! We sat and watched the Sounders game enjoying a very tasty bloody mary! The food was suprisingly great! I had an omelet, made to order with Bacon, mushroom ( which were grilled , yumm!) , and jack cheese. This came with tasty hashbrowns(the real kind) and a side of BAKED BEANS WITH BACON. I am allergic to wheat and they were very accommodating, switched up my toast for tasty baked beans and made my bloody's with potato vodka! YUMMY! I highly recommend it. I don't like to think of myself as a 'hater' but I do kind of hate brunch in general. Until, of course, last weekend, when I had brunch at Smarty Pants. First impression, the employees were all super friendly (even let us in a few minutes early since we didn't realize it wasn't quite 9am yet). The music was awesome. The decor was cool. But it was the food that made me reconsider my lifelong hatred of brunch. They have awesome vegetarian options, not just some crap wilty vegetable option because the chefs can't understand people who don't eat bacon. No, here there were almost too many vegetarian options, all sounding delicious and all far more exciting that standard brunch fare. Fake chorizo was super tasty in my mondo humongous fantastically delicious burrito. Ingredients were hot, fresh, flavorful, and generally all around amazing. The server was super attentive and kept our coffees full. As much as I hate brunch, the only thing I hate more are people who take home brunch left overs. (Really? You can't scramble some eggs at home? You'd rather eat nasty day-old eggs? Gross.) Well, I took half my breakfast home. It was so big I couldn't possibly finish it (and for a super reasonable price, seriously, tons of stuff under $10) and it was so delicious, I couldn't dream of not having another bite the next day. We ate here last week while staying at a hotel nearby. My husband and I ate out on the patio. I had an iced tea and roast beef sandwich, he had a couple beers and the French dip special. The service was excellent, and fast. Food tasted great, the meat on the sandwiches was thick and plentiful. We go to Seattle every 2-3 months and if we find ourselves in Georgetown again, we will definitely eat here. read more

Take two of my favorite things, great sandwiches and a great beer selection and put them both in a very cool setting in an out of the way part of town and you have Smarty Pants. I have been there at least 15-20 times and have always left happy because of awesome food and awesome service, hell even my 85 year old Grandfather liked it!!
