Can you give less than one star? I've never been to a place and wanted an adult around so much. Employees sitting on the floor, behind the counter. Cashier did not acknowledge me (standing in front of her). While ordering, she continued her conversation with friends as well as commenting that "Jay" kept leaving. Had to ask for silverware, none was out. Cashiers stopped talking amongst one another so they could flirt with guy from phone store. He was obviously uncomfortable about being called "pretty" and being asked about giving them a discount. If you see "Jay" send him back. Maybe he's the grown up missing??? I feel bad for the owner. We do enjoy Smashburger's food BUT the customer service has been horrible the last 3 times we have been. 1. Not open bc not enough workers on a Sunday morning. This is fine, but let's put up a sign. I didn't know and the hours sign is faded off the glass. I knocked and was ignored. I called and they told me that's why they are closed and why they did not answer my knock. It was starting to snow and I had my 4 kiddos. 2. I came in at 9pm and they were cleaning which was fine. However, the girl getting my food in the bags and ready for me was complaining the entire time she wanted to go and can she go now. Her ride was there and she wanted to go. The lead person told her fine (finally) and that next time she will stay her entire shift. She never spoke to me or my family while preparing our food. 3. We came in again around 30 minutes to closing and placed our order. The cashier was not overly friendly but she did take care of us. The other girl locked one door. A customer came in and stood in line for about 6 minutes and then the girls told her sorry we are closed. It was not closing time. I felt bad for the lady. The doors were open and it was not time for them to be locked. She looked around and said, "seriously?!" They told her yes. She left. We like the food but the customer service needs to be stepped up. The low rating is not for the food or the service because the food was good once we finally received it and the 2 girls manning the front deserve medals. I took 2 stars because whoever the manager is is not doing a good job. The management at this place needs to step up. They either need to hire people that will actually show up for work or hire more. Those 2 girls were doing the work of 5 and it wasn't fair. They did great and handled everything as best they could. Poor Service - Poor Attitude This was our second visit to this restaurant. Never going back again! My food never came out! My wife and son's food came out. Mine sat on the counter for nearly 30 mins as the staff played with a baby her friends brought in. Only one person working, taking orders from a long line of customers. Spoke to the manager after I asked for a refund. They still offered me the food after it sat there cold for 30 mins! I went on a weekday around 2 pm and there were 2 other people eating. There was no line, which was good because this was my first visit and I needed to review the menu. I ordered a bacon cheeseburger (boring, I know!), sweet potato fries and an iced tea. My order came out quickly, the fries were great and burger fantastic. No complaints. The place was clean, plenty of places to sit inside and some seats outside as well. My only complaint is the unsweetened iced tea. They use Honest brand tea and I chose the one that was just tea but it had some sort of odd flavor in it. It wasn't sweetened it just had some herb or something in it. Not a fan. So I take off one star for that as those of you who read me reviews know that I am all about the unsweetened iced tea (and the bathrooms). Third and last time trying this place - the previous two times I had gotten chicken so this time I decided to try a burger since they are called SmashBURGER. Got the spicy jalapeño baja burger - as always seriously lacking in toppings and the burger was quite dry despite what their advertisements say. Also, the bun was horrifically dry. Got their smashfries which were terribly greasy and almost.... Stale...? Maybe freezer burnt? I don't know what was wrong with them but they were some of the worst fries I have ever had. 3 1/2 stars... This is another go to the counter and order and they bring your food to the table type restaurants. Very family friendly....they even had kids meals options which some of the other burger spots I like don't have...so that was bonus points for them! The good: Smashfries: Some garlic, some rosemary, skinny cut fries...made for some tasty fries. Onion Straws: Amazing! So good! Some of the best onions I have ever had. The Eh: The burger. So I asked if I could get it "green style" (wrapped in lettuce) like many other burger places are doing. He said they could. It took my plate to come out about five minutes past the others I was dining with on the same ticket and it was two itty bitty pieces of lettuce with my burger. Would have also loved one of those fancy Cola machines like other places are getting! I am not a big soda drinker, but I do love me a grape sprite. If they could improve the green style I would have been a much bigger fan of the restaurant. Check out Burgerfi as their greenstyle burger is one of the best and juicy burgers I have had. The best word to describe this place is Wow. We went on an idle Monday for lunch. We both got the Classic burger. We also tried both types of fries. My wife and I were pleasantly impressed. I honestly think the burgers are easier to eat and not nearly as messy as Five Guys. The burger had plenty of favor. The fries were also good, but they are the thin ones. Smashburger definitely makes a tasty burger. Of the ones I've indulged in, they are juicy and delicious! Especially the bacon cheeseburger. The bacon is usually forgotten on burgers. Most places serve it soggy and limp. But at Smashburger the bacon truly shines. It is always crisp, thick, and in the perfect amount. Unfortunately this is where my praise starts to wane. I've had the regular fries, the olive oil and Rosemary fries, and the sweet potato fries. All of them get an underwhelming "meh." I was really hoping for a burger place the fries would be awesome. The one high point is they are always hot and crisp. But other than that they are pretty blah. They have the typical range of sodas and iced tea, nothing interesting or special. The price is also an issue for me. It's unusually high for a burger place. I don't know if it's because of the location or the franchise. But that keeps me from going more. This place needs help!!! Food is good but not enough staff to take orders, make milkshakes, run the order, and bus tables. At one point all workers went to the back and no one on the floor for at least 5 minutes. Didn't seem to see any manager in charge who could handle the problems at this location. Hopefully the owners will read yelp reviews and address these problems. So.... Unfortunately it's gotten worse. Went in last week, two families were sitting down eating, about 2-3 people waiting for food and no one in line and we were told they were not taking any orders because the kitchen was backed up and they were short staffed. Front end staff on 9/10/2017 around 8pm looked like they didn't want to be there and it showed in their customer service . Employees seemed to be in slow motion . Wife and I walked in and stood at register for an extended time , were never greeted and had to ask if somebody would take our order. The employee that eventually took our order was the one prepping food on the side counter, so she could obviously see us standing at the register. She just didn't think it was important to let us know she would be right with us . I had to ask her do I order from the side or at the register . After ordering I over heard another customer complaining about his order that he made 30 mins prior . The restaurant was a mess , no napkins on the tables and bathrooms were disgusting. We also observed one employee behind the register drinking a milk shake and waisting time when it was obvious that other things needed to be done. The closing employees at this location need to be trained or replaced with people that want to work. Shereen has a bad attitude and it's not worth dealing with after paying over $40 for 2 burgers and a shake. Notice how many of the one star reviews has to do with the employees and lack of customer service? I can't figure out if this place needs new management or new employees. Please handle your employees better. I love Smashburger food. The locations in Fairfax & Tysons are GREAT. So I went to this Gainesville location and was totally let down. I've been here 3 times now. Every time, the place is dirty, tables aren't cleaned up, napkins are missing from the tables, etc. The staff stand around talking to each other or playing on their phones. I finally decided to write this review today because I felt so bad for the shift manager. I was there at 8pm 6/25/17 and the shift manager was trying so hard to provide good service. He kept asking the staff to do things and they either wouldn't or did it begrudgingly. A few random people (perhaps they're staff who weren't on the clock today?) walked back in the kitchen to talk with staff. The shift mgr had to tell them to get out. They walked to tables and sat down to eat. This girl (staff member) stood at the counter eating French fries as she put together food orders to hand to patrons. She was eating with her fingers and then handling food for patrons! Nasty. The same girl went to sweep and bus tables - came back and handled new food again without washing her hands. There needs to be some serious staff cleansing here. And proper training. Kudos to the shift manager there tonight - he deserves a store where management will actually hire decent staff and fire the worthless staff. I will go to the other smash burgers because I love the food, but I won't be back to this location again. Just awful. The only reason I ordered the onion haystack was because the fried onions came with ranch. I put a note with my order asking for extra ranch and guess what I got? No ranch at all. Awesome. The onion haystack was dry and cold and flavorless without it. I ate a couple pieces and tossed the rest into the trash. The burger was fine, I guess, but there was literally only one small piece of lettuce on it. Paid $2 to add bacon and same thing -- there was only one piece on it. Really, Smashburger? I got a regular smash burger and asked for it well done since I am preggers now, and they had a bit of trouble making it well done (I had to pull out some under cooked meat from the patty). Wife ordered the turkey burger and i had the crispy chicken. She said hers was ok, but my chicken was overcooked, dry and cut up the roof of my mouth pretty good, haha!
