I have a fear of the dentist like most people and I recently broke a tooth so I came in today before it got to bad and they were able to save the tooth and crown it which was amazing! The level of professionalism and excellent customer service have been outstanding and I highly recommend Mason Dental. They also have the latest technology and are able to make crowns onsite which means you can get it done all in a few hours. I was told that insurance would be verified and that they would submit everything for a coverage estimate prior to treatment. After my exam and X-rays, I was informed that I had periodontal disease and would need scaling and root planing. I was also told I had approximately nine cavities and was strongly encouraged to proceed with laser treatment that was not covered by insurance. At no point did I feel I was given clear, conservative options or a breakdown of urgency versus elective procedures. The initial visit resulted in a $200 charge, and I was quoted approximately $800 for the recommended deep cleaning. Because the diagnosis felt significant, I sought a second opinion as I've never had periodontal issues and receive regular cleanings (I worked in the dental industry for years). At another dental office, I was told that I do not have periodontal disease and do not need scaling and root planning cleanings. Their review of my X-rays showed no signs supporting that diagnosis, aside from two isolated pockets near areas where my wisdom teeth had previously been extracted. Then was informed I have two areas on my molars that needed very small fillings on the occlusal areas. They were shocked my Mason Dentals treatment plan! Based on this second opinion, I'm concerned about the difference in diagnoses and the treatment plan I was given. I would recommend getting a second opinion before proceeding with Mason Dental.

I was able to request an appointment and complete new patient paperwork online, which was extremely convenient for me. The office quickly called to confirm an appointment time, which happened to be within the next week. The day of my appointment I found the office location convenient with plenty of parking. The front office staff was very friendly. My experience with my hygienist and the doctor was everything I was hoping for. The dental practices in the area I came from were corporate and often pushed services that you didn't need so it was refreshing to feel like I was with a medical professional who was actually caring for my needs versus their pockets. My family who is still back in my home state has even considered switching to this dentist when they come to visit.

This year, leading up to my annual cleaning, the office called me multiple times throughout the week asking me to move my scheduled Saturday 12:30 PM appointment to an earlier time (around 10 AM). I clearly explained each time that I work long hours and that 12:30 PM was the earliest I could come. Despite this, they continued to pressure me to change my appointment. On the morning of my appointment, they called again and told me they needed me to come earlier because "the doctor did not want to wait two hours for my appointment." I was also told they "usually close early," which makes me question why they even offer later appointment times if they are unwilling to honor them. I was then told that I would need to reschedule, even though I was fully willing and able to attend my original appointment. I had already rearranged my schedule and stacked multiple medical appointments on my only day off that week specifically to accommodate this visit. Like many working adults, I have very limited flexibility during business hours, and I don't think it is unreasonable to expect a healthcare office to respect a time slot that they themselves scheduled. As someone who works in healthcare, I found this extremely unprofessional and not patient-centered at all. When I later decided to cancel because I no longer felt comfortable with the level of professionalism, the receptionist simply said, "Okay, I will cancel your appointment and inactivate your account. Goodbye." No apology, no attempt to address the issue, no basic courtesy. Patients should not be made to feel like their time is less valuable than a provider's convenience. The lack of respect, communication, and professionalism throughout this entire interaction was shocking. I will not be returning and would not recommend this office based on this experience.

I began looking for other professional opinions, one of which was by Dr. Gist. While he could've very easily just put me on a tighter cleaning regimen, he took the time to conduct a comprehensive, thorough exam, 360° sort of x-rays, etc. It was about a month of exams by him, his over-the-top experiences office staff, a periodontist, and an endodontist. The infection was obvious, and could not be denied, but he was also convinced that I had some other really big things going on under my crowns/veneers from said former dentist. And boy was he right. I've included pictures of what he uncovered (please keep in mind that I was going to see my former dentist every three months for cleanings, so it is not like I did not take care of my teeth), as well as a picture of my smile today. I am happy, healthy, and I love my new dental family. Thank you Dr. G and your wonderful staff!
