I cannot say enough great things about this salon! I went there for my first time over the weekend for a haircut and highlights. Alicia cut my hair and she did a fabulous job. She was so sweet and was able to understand my incredibly vague instructions for a haircut perfectly. I had never gotten my hair highlighted before and this was possibly the best experience I could've had. Stevie did my highlights but I was nervous about putting color in my hair and kept emphasizing that I wanted them to look natural. They looked great but I realized I had a less conservative look in mind. I called them the next day and told Stevie that I wanted to amp up my color some. She immediately scheduled me to come back three days later and she would put more highlights in and lighten them up a bit. Stevie was beyond accommodating and ended up giving me the perfect color. She didn't charge me anything extra and wouldn't even let me tip her after my second coloring! This salon is truly fantastic. Everyone there is so incredibly nice and down to earth. I randomly stumbled upon Smith and Davis salon on Pinterest! As a cosmetology student, the picture I saw sparked my interest so I did some investigating. I was so happy when I realized they were in Chicago. I promptly made an appointment for a consultation. My hair was pretty butchered from being in cosmetology school and having 6 different people get their mitts on it (color and cut.) The consultation was complimentary, and Stevie did some test foils in my hair to make sure the integrity of my hair would stay in tact for the next appointment. (I wanted to go more blonde!) I had the talented Stevie do my color, and beautiful Alicia cut my hair. I brought both Stevie and Alicia pictures of what I wanted. My color came out better than expected, and the cut was exactly as I pictured it, considering my hair already had a lot of awful layers in it. Stevie took care of my extra damaged, thin hair and Alicia broke down the haircut for me so I could understand how it would and wouldn't work with my hair (considering the icky layers I came in with.) They are extremely attentive and really care about what you want and how you feel with your hair. The rest of the staff is sweet as pie, and the receptionist actually knew the product line they carried and was knowledgeable about which products did what and what would be a good fit for my hair, plus the iced tea they serve is magical If you have a hair disaster, or are in need of amazing work go to Smith and Davis salon. Love this salon! Michael is amazing. I found him by happenstance at his former salon, and am so glad I did. Like others have said, my hair looks great the day I get it cut, and still looks great months later. Michael's attention to detail is unparalleled. I am extremely critical of my cut (thanks to my salon owner aunt) and could not be more impressed with Michael's talent. Highly, highly recommended. Seriously. I was visiting friends in Chicago from out-of-town and found out about Alicia from reviews -- let me just start off by saying that all of the folklore is true! Alicia is a goddess at cutting a perfect pixie. She was super attentive to what I wanted, and had an amazing instinct of what would look great on me as far as new things to try. While I can appreciate the owner's attempt to cover her ..., the statements are simply dishonest, which speaks volumes. To add more detail to my initial review, I was running 15 min (not 30) late due to traffic coming from the Southwest Suburbs, and called on my way to let them know. I was informed she could not take me because I was late, so while I was bummed, I understood and certainly was not mad or "taking it personal". It was the blatantly sarcastic comments from the owner to me while I was getting my cut that completely turned me off. I was sincerely apologetic for being late, but it seemed it was the owner who took it personal. I was absolutely shocked at the immature and unprofessional attitude displayed. I've worked in sales and client account management for 15 years and never once thought to act that way towards a client, no matter what the situation. I prefer to do business with those who handle all engagements in a professional and genuinely courteous manner. read more

Anyone that tells you a good hairdresser is easy to find is either a. a liar, or b.has really bad hair. After experimenting with a number of salons in Chicago (one of which proceeded to burn significant chunks of my hair off- we're talking almost bald in some sections) i settled with Smith & Davis - and boy, was this an EXCELLENT decision. Firstly, let's talk about the color-goddess that is Stevie. I'm a super-fussy platinum blond, and with my newly burnt-off locks i knew it was going to be a journey to get me back to the color i wanted. Stevie was ultra patient, and worked with me over a number of months, making sure my damaged hair was properly repaired while we moved towards the color i wanted. Now, my color is perfect, best it's been in a very long time, and my hair is in fabulous condition (albeit still growing out). She's seriously talented, thoughtful and a proper sweetheart to boot. Secondly, the rest of the staff are delightful. Alicia cuts my hair (when i remember to make an appointment) and she always does a bang-up job, making me feel confident and shiny. This is long overdue! Alicia at Smith & Davis absolutely rocks. Every cut I got from her at the salon felt carefully crafted and it grew out beautifully. She always asked me in detail how I felt about my hair and if I wanted something specific. She pays great attention to detail and I got tons of compliments about my hair. BRIA has given me the best haircut I have ever had. EVER. Just moved here and had to say goodbye to a beloved hairdresser. I did a ton of research (maybe too much) and came across Bria and decided to pull the trigger. I am so so so happy with my experience at Smith & Davis Salon. I have fine/wavy hair but lots of it, so it has always been difficult for me to describe what I want and have the result that I hope. My brother's girlfriend is a wonderful stylist who cut my hair into a cute shaggy pixie in the Fall, but when I decided to keep growing it to an angled bob, she was living too far away for me to have her work her magic. So I asked her to help me pick a salon in Chicago, and she suggested Smith & Davis. I read everyone's bio on their website, and I felt like I would probably have a great experience with any of them, but I ended up booking an appointment with Alicia. Everything about the experience was lovely. It was pouring down rain when I arrived, and as soon as I stepped in, I was greeted by a friendly front of house staff who offered me coffee and told me where I could go dry off and get comfortable. I met with Alicia and described my ideal cut to her, showed her a Pintrest selection of photos, and showed her what my hair had grown out from before. She talked about what she liked about the photos, but also talked about what variation of the cut would work well with my face shape and hair texture. The result was wonderful. She even helped me learn how to use a straightener to get a more modern wave. This was also the first time a stylist has complimented the hair that I have, rather than try to get me to wish I had different hair - this sounds really simple, but in the past, I've lost confidence at hair salons and felt like my hair was difficult and I would be unable to have a style that I liked. She even told me that I have a great natural color, and when I told her I'm not really one to keep up with coloring my hair, she was supportive of that, rather than trying to push me to spend more money - again, very simple, but that meant a lot to me. However, if I ever did want to try some color, I'm sure the experience there would be great! It was also the first time I've left a salon and loved the way my hair was styled and didn't feel like re-doing it when I got home :) Also - great price. It's been about a week and a half since my appointment, and I am still so happy with my hair, and I will definitely be returning for my next hair cut! read more

I have been going to Chad, my hair stylist, and Abby, my colorist for years,when they were with Vidal Sassoon. When they moved to Smith&Davis, I moved with them. I'm so glad I did. The salon is lovely; unpretentious and comfortable. Chad cuts my difficult hair so well. And Abby is a gifted colorist. Plus, they are both wonderful people who I enjoy visiting with. I have long very curly hair so finding someone who actually knows how to navigate that and give a quality haircut is so hard- but not here! I've seen both Michael and Alicia and left very pleased both times. I live in the northwest suburbs so it's not exactly convenient for me but I make the trip anyway because I know I'm going to leave with a great haircut. Michael has been cutting my hair for 6 or 7 years. I found him around the time I moved to Chicago, and his expertise and precision are unparalleled. I have long, thick hair and his layering is like magic, as my style stays fresh for months. Even when I was sent to Washington D.C. for 6 months on a work project, I was sure to schedule my hair needs for when I was back in the Chicago office because I wouldn't trust anyone else with my hair. I recently moved to West Loop and opened a business, which has kept me insanely busy so I thought I'd try another stylist closer to me for convenience. Big mistake. Now that I know what a really good cut can do for your hair, my standards have been set too high. I just booked another appointment at Smith and Davis and will make the trip all the way back up to Lakeview because the quality you'll find in this salon is really worth the trip. I have lived in Chicago for three years and have gone to Smith & Davis twice for drastic hair cuts. The only reason I ended up going there was because I walked by it every day.Three years ago I got about 8 inches cut off by Michael and then grew it out again (this is a thing I do) this past January I got married and wanted my hair very long for the wedding and then the week after I went to Michael again and cut 10 inches off. Each time Michael has asked me when I wanted and did not want ( I came prepared with pictures of both because I had received a bad short hair cut from my previous salon.) Together we looked at pictures and talked for a long time before he started cutting and both times I have been very happy. Michael is also realistic-the hair cuts are not cheap and I am living off a teacher salary and he recommended that I see a cheaper salons for my trims and then go back to him when I needed a full hair cut again. I am going to go to Smith and Davis next week for a balayage. read more
