Terrible he waited a whole year to tell us that my dog was aggressive so he's not gonna administer his shots. So we couldn't border the dog we lost our money on the deposit as well as our vacation The only reason why he did that was because we were still buying food from him he tried to say his assistant was injured so why did he wait a whole year to tell us this? This guy is no good and I urge everybody not to bring their animals there. Be careful he slick with his words in the office he said he's not going to see him anymore on paper. Horrible doctor. Two of my dogs died under his care at a very young age. He will not tell the whole truth about a diagnosis to keep you coming back and spending more and more money while your pup is suffering. My dog died gasping for air due to Congestive heart failure and pulmonary edema while all along he kept saying she had pneumonia! Cruel and inhumane person. Horribly disappointed by this callous approach to end of life care. The owner of the practice blamed it on COVID-19. We call several local vets who would allow to be with our Ryan at his passing. They took the money for years but wouldn't allow a compassionate ending. We took Ryan elsewhere to be euthanized. read more

Hey, Updated review: was just told by Dr Coiro in a phone conversation that "you can believe whatever you want" after I confronted him about the fact that my dog had developed a serious infection after prescription of two concurrent immunosuppressive medications for his allergic dermatitis. My dog has a history of dermatitis. He was put on apoquel and given a glucocorticoid topical medication. After a month of using both medications he developed an infection that took months to resolve. Please consider carefully the need for Apoquel for your dog. After reading and carefully assessing what it does, it makes sense that he developed such an unlikely infection, which presented itself with elevated liver enzymes and an enlarged liver. I not for once heard anything remotely compassionate in the words of the doctor. And this is after all the testing and time we had spent to treat the infection and undergone extensive tests. In the end, I was dismissed when expressed my thoughts on the treatment I was prescribed and what we went through. As someone, who is working in the medical industry and a medical applicant, I was appalled by such approach and attention final conversation which ended in the Dr basically telling me to go F off. To be more elaborate: My dog got a bad urinary infection. He was not able to urinate and we had to go to the emergency vet. After coming back to the clinic for additional evaluation, we did blood work and ultrasound. I was quickly told my dog has Cushings, for which we then did the test, and then I was told it was Addison for which I did another test. In between that, I was told to continue using topical steroids, for allergic dermatitis. Use of glucocorticoids, as I learned later, affected his endogenous cortisol level on the test making the Cushing test useless and causing the need for subsequent Addisons test. These are long procedures and require multiple blood draws. (In addition to cost and stress it causes to the pet) I really don't understand why was I continuously told to use glucocorticoids even thought we were testing for glucocorticoid hormone, cortisol? It was not supposed to be this way. Here, trying to be objective, but in my opinion, I should have been told explicitly to not use any steroids while we do hormone tests. Period. In conclusion: My dog is free of infection thankfully, but I had gone through emergency veterinary visit, multiple blood tests, ultrasound, multiple tests to asses cortisol levels, to finally conclude that this was a serious infection of the Urinary system that is very rare in male dogs, pointing to the fact that the dog was immune-suppressed. Reading apoquel studies, it became clear that my dog is not an exception, and infections of ears, urinary tract, and skin are common, as a result of immunosuppression that medication does. In addition, all of the studies explicitly state that use of glucocorticoids and other immunosuppressive medications such as cytopoint and cyclosporine, was stoped at least 6 weeks before study, due to possibility of combined effect as they are targeting the same issue. Pasting the link to just one many articles from The Journal of Veterinary Dermatology on Apoquel : https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/vde.12088 By itself it can cause issues. Combined with use of topical glucocorticoid, that pets can easily lick off their paws (as my dog likely did), these are not to be used together. Please, be cautious and critical of what your veterinarian prescribes. I would not want anyone else undergo what we had. As I unfortunately found, you will not find any compassion from the Doctor, and will be left on your own. My concerns were disregarded and I don't think there is anything I can do except warn others. Im going to keep this short and sweet. This animal hospital is beyond incredible, the doctors and staff are amazing. It was our first visit and our beloved cat Bruce had to be hospitalized and eventually euthanized. Dr Baldino spent so much time with us explaining our options and showed nothing but empathy and compassion. He made a truly devastating situation a little easier for us. I took my pets to Smithaven for years but something has changed there. They no longer actually have overnight medical services if your pet becomes truly ill, you have to go to ER. The services are basically the same level as the Vet at Petco. I suspect my cat was mistreated when he was separated from me during treatment. They separate you from your pet for the simplest treatment like a vaccination. Dr Corio wanted to charge me $110 and anesthetize my cat to cut his nails. They said this was necessary because of his behavior when they separated him from me. My cat has been treated by another vet and gone to a groomer for his nails without incident. I sent a message to Dr Corio and expressed a concern that my cat had been abused there when separated from me and he didn't even bother to respond. That is how little they care about you or your pet. This was after decades of brining several pets to this facility. Don't brI go your pet here. Find somewhere they won't separate you fr9m your pet unnecessarily and where they take mistreatment concerns seriously. read more

They gave me all the time I needed with her and didn't rush me even though I was the last patient for the day. They even sent a sympathy card signed by each staff member with a personal note. I highly recommend Smithaven Vet solely based on the work of Dr. Vincent Baldino. He is one of the kindest, most honest, caring vets I have ever had the pleasure of taking my pets to. I drive more than 20 miles from my home to reach his office, probably passing dozens of other vets on my way because of the quality of care and kindness provided by Dr. Baldino. My interaction with the other vet, Dr. Coiro, has been limited but he has always been cordial. However, among the support staff, an elderly blonde haired woman in particular has been rude, nasty, and far from helpful. My husband and I took our dog for a lepto vaccine and Dr. B. said he would need a follow up booster shot 2-3 weeks later. The doctor said no appointment was needed, we could just bring the dog in, and that there would be no additional charge at this subsequent visit on top of the fee we already paid. Knowing that we live 20+ miles away, he said that even though the follow up shot would be free at Smithaven, if we didn't want to take the drive, we could go to a local vet or petco and ask for the follow up booster which was not expensive. When I brought my dog in 3 weeks later for the follow up booster, I started explaining my circumstances to the receptionist. She cut me off as I began attempting to explain what Dr. B. had said. She very nastily yelled at me "Oh no! Dr. Baldino would NEVER have told you that the follow up booster was included. You have to pay, you are mistaken." I asked to speak to Dr. Baldino or any other available vet to clarify his statements in case I did in fact misunderstand or was "mistaken" as the woman said. My husband, who was with my at the initial appointment, also said that Dr. B. said the booster would be included in the initial visit price, there would be no additional charge, and that I did not misunderstand. If we had been wrong, if we had misunderstood, that would have been fine, but the way this woman handled it being so rude and nasty and not even giving me the chance to speak to a vet when I asked was inexcusable. It cost me more in time and travel than it would have to go to the local Petco for an inexpensive booster, I wanted to return to Smithaven Vet because of the quality of care Dr. Baldino provided. I was told flat out by this woman "NO, you can't speak to the vet." She then told me I had to pay BEFORE the service was rendered by a vet tech, which I have never had to do at any vet in my entire life. When I questioned why I was asked to pay in advance when that had never been the case before, the woman snapped "Some services have to be paid in advance, like if you need euthanasia services you have to pay upfront." Dumbfounded, I retorted "Thank you. I will keep that in mind if I ever need euthanasia services from you." This woman's nasty attitude and unprofessional behavior would have been enough to cause me to never return and take my business elsewhere if not for Dr. Baldino. Luckily, there are several other support staff members who have been kind and helpful. If you can avoid interaction this unpleasant rude woman you will have a 5 star experience at Smithaven Vet. read more

My boyfriend and I brought our 12 week old Cavalier King Charles to Dr. Coiro at Smithhaven Vet Hospital, and our experience was nothing less than fantastic. From the moment we walked in the door, all the women at the front desk were so welcoming and happy to see our little girl. They all gave her tons of love an attention, and she was wagging the entire time! We were taken in no time into the exam room, where Dr. Coiro met us. He was so enthusiastic, friendly, and professional. He handled Dottie so well, and she just adored him. He did a very thorough check-up for her, really taking his time to make sure she looked good in all areas. He was in no rush, and took his time answering many of our silly questions that I am sure he has to answer 20x a day. He gave us a great explanation on how to manage her upcoming vaccinations for her/our specific lifestyle, instead of pushing all vaccinations on her at once, which some vets do. He took a solid half hour to really be present and give us all the info we needed. When we were done, the bill was exactly what they said it would be, (no hidden charges-which happened at our last vet), and they provided us with a copy of her visit check up paperwork for our own records. Dr Coiro is a very dedicated and caring Doctor. My cat has IBD and although, he recommended we see a specialist, in the initial phase of his illness, he was so committed to helping us treat him. We went through a trial of different medicines and he was readily available by phone to get updates and make other suggestions. He also explains medical procedures and diagnoses in ways that are easy to understand. Dr. Coiro also never makes you feel rushed. The front desk still are also very helpful and kind. Lori has been very loving to our cat during his procedures and whenever we had to board him. This place is top notch in my opinion! Dr. Coiro has been the primary vet for my dog for a little under a year now. I switched to him after my dog was diagnosed with advanced heart failure that had been missed by her previous vet. He has been a wonderful provider for my dog and she is doing great under his care. He takes time to update me by phone regarding her lab results and answer all my (numerous and probably annoying) questions. The office staff is wonderful and treats my dog as if she were their own pet. I highly recommend this practice, and Dr. Coiro especially. read more
