Fries tasted like school lunch fries and pulled chicken was okey. Chicken tenders are big and a good bang for the buck.

Traveling from Virginia to Florida for lunch on a Sunday. First time visit to a Smithfield's, sorry to say it will be our last. The staff evidently had not received any customer service training at all. There was no help in describing menu items. When I got to a table with our drinks, the bottom fell out of the styrofoam cup and soda went all over the table and seat. There was no offer to help clean it up. I had to do it all myself, making several trips to the paper towel dispenser near the front counter. The only help was from one employee who held the trash can lid open for me on one of the trips with soaked paper towels. Also, someone had previously spilled sauce or something on the floor near our table. It lay there the whole time we were there with employees stepping over it - no attempts to clean it up. On top of everything not happening that should have been happening, the food was only mediocre ( chicken tenders and pulled pork sandwich). read more

Stopped by at 9:30 they close at 11pm. We ordered a large BBQ plate and a chicken snack pack plate. All of the plates were cold. Fries were at least a 1/2 hour old, they were tough to bite through they were so old and stale. The hush puppies were just as bad. The food on the BBQ platter ran together the potato salad and coleslaw were warm. Fried chicken was barely lukewarm. One employee compleyely ignored our request for plastic utensils, I walked up to the and got some from the counter. We complained to an employee about the food that that it was lukewarm and old. He asked if we wanted new fries. At this point we had enough and left, throwing our food away. We won't be back. read more

I was in Charleston for a Hip Hop convention and stopped at Smithfield's on my way home. It's very close to the exit on Rte 95. This was my introduction to Carolina barbecue and I loved it. I'm used to Canadian barbecue which is totally different. I had the barbecue sandwich which was pulled pork on a bun with cole slaw on top. The sandwich was great. On the way to the beach for Thanksgiving, we stopped for lunch because this place had been recommended to us by our daughter and son-in-law. Stopped in about 12:30 pm and the place was packed including a lot of cops, which is a good sign. Walked in and had to wait several minutes for a table to open up. Wife and I both got the chicken snack which is 2 pcs of chicken with one side. She got dark meat and I white. The chicken skin was light, crispy and not greasy at all, 'cause had it been we would not have eaten it. It also was seasoned just right. Much better than that 11 herbs and spices place! Chicken itself was hot, tender and really good. They had an eastern Carolina vinegar hot dip on the table that really complimented the chicken. For my side I got the brunswick stew which had plenty of vegetables and shredded chicken. Wife got baked beans which she said were very good. I thought it was just a tad pricey for lunch with 2 teas and tax comming in just shy of $17, but you get what you pay for and if you want an el cheapo lunch you can go eat off the dollar menu at the place with the clown. There is not a Smithfield's near our house but we would stop in again if we saw one while traveling. read more

Picture this, we are on our way back from Parris Island, SC driving north to Connecticut and love the Smithfield Chicken so much that we stopped in and got chicken and 4 gallons of sweet tea to go. That's right 4 gallons. Being from New England, sweet tea is rare up north. After I had got the tea to bring home, at least 4 workers gave us the recipe for Sweet Tea - - it just tea, water, and sugar. Super sweet and friendly workers. read more

Would give it a 3 1/2.... this place is basically a fast food barbecue spot. You order at the counter and then they bring the food out to your table. The food comes out very fast, and it is pretty good. Definitely not the best barbecue, but for a quick stop it does the trick. The coleslaw reminds me of KFC coleslaw (in a good way)... finely chopped and sweet. Potato salad was also quite good. Barbecue chicken was okay, but the fried chicken was quite good! The staff is very, very friendly, stopping by the table to offer refills, clear plates and make sure everything is okay. read more

Smithfields is very good bbq. Definitely authentic Carolina bbq (vinegar based). Their sweet tea is pretty delicious too. I prefer a Palmer but whatever floats your boat. Their sides are good and abundant and their fried chicken may be as good as any. I recommend this place! read more

We usually stop here when traveling I95, and we can always count on great quality NC BBQ (chain restaurant) with quick, courteous service. Today we stopped in, and it was the best overall experience we've had at a Smithfield's in 20 years. The pork, fried chicken, hush puppies, and sides were hot, fresh, and delicious; the service was exceptional despite the busy lunchtime hour. This restaurant was recently renovated, so it was a pleasure to take a break at this particular stop and have a tremendous lunch experience. I recommend stopping here if you are looking for great food at a great price with outstanding Southern hospitality. read more

My son and I ordered, he got large barbeque plate and I got the regular barbeque plate. You couldn't tell the difference, I brought it to server's attention and he brought a small cup of barbeque for us to take home. I discovered this place on driving trips down I-95 between Jacksonville, Fl., and Washington D.C., and it's hard to resist stopping every time we travel through. The pulled pork barbecue sandwich is topped with coleslaw. Every table has Texas Pete hot sauce and it's a perfect addition to the sandwich. This is my favorite fast-food barbecue sandwich on the planet. One time I called ahead to see if they sell Styrofoam coolers for bringing a bulk order of the barbecue and slaw home on ice for a 12-hour drive. They said yes but when I got there the employees had no idea about coolers being available. There's a Walmart nearby if you need a cooler. read more

My wife and I love stoping here on our way to the beach! The food is great, the sweet tea is amazing, and the customer service is southern hospitality at its best! As we were leaving tonight, there was a man on a motorcycle involved in an accident at the intersection. Two employees, not sure their name took ice and water out to the driver who appeared to be injured and assisted as they waited for EMT to arrive! Great job to those two employees! read more

Stopped here on our way back home. I am an NC girl so I am picky about my BBQ. So I had a bbq and coleslaw sand which and my husband had chicken tenders and fries. The bbq was good not the best I had but good. For those that are not native to NC it is typical vinegar based bbq. The coleslaw was awesome! Hushpuppies were really good too! Chicken tenders and fries were good. Stay away from the desert! I order banana pudding and it was basic and not very good. It was a banana flavored pudding with som vanilla wafers on top. Not a fan but I am use to homemade so I am a little biased. Overall good quick NC comfort food with a drive thru! I would return if I was on the road and needed a place to grab a quick bite. read more

On our way home to Raleigh from Charleston, SC, we decided to stop here for some fast bbq that we had never tried before via drive-thru. I ordered the shrimp platter, but did not receive any shrimp! The coleslaw tasted awful-- it is yellow and has pickled relish in it. They didn't provide any bbq sauce for the chicken tender plate or for the pulled pork. It was a greasy red sauce that was sickly sweet. I will never eat at a Smithfield's again. Cost 23 for a really disgusting and not even complete order of food. Wish we had just stopped into the Texas roadhouse. Lesson learned. read more

The first (and last) experience with this place was horrible. Admittedly, I am no BBQ expert from NC but the chicken was terrible. Soggy buns and when we asked for carryout BBQ sauce for the chicken sandwich we were told they don't have it. They have BBQ in their name and have 1 gallon jugs of the stuff on the counter! Complete waste of money. The sodas were excellent (way to go Coke!) and hush puppies were edible. Everything else went into the trash ($20 worth). NEVER AGAIN. read more

Not real impressed. The stew is not them most eye pleasing looked like something my cat threw up. I could not bring myself to try it. The chicken is ok. Potato salad is very wet to much tang. It stuck me as strange a person keeps coming to my table . Touching it .. ok to ask if we need anything not touch my area. Later its kept on and on. Forever interrupted from my conversation with my friend who was here a week. You lose your train of thought. Its a fast food that wants to be a mom and pop . No i ordered at the counter. It is basically a fast food joint with really dated interior and exterior. It has a drive through window, so very convenient for on the go food. I have only eaten the bar b q sandwhich, with and without coleslaw, and all I can say is that my mouth is watering as I type. Just a little bit of heat, ordinary bun but plenty juicy and tasty. I love it and wont bring myself to order anything else when I am there. read more

This is our favorite stop off I-95 for a quick bite. In the 10 plus years we've been coming to this restaurant we've always been satisfied with their food and service. My favorite is a BBQ sandwich with slaw and hush puppies. The combo chicken platter is also a good choice. We always bring home a gallon of sweet tea. My wife grew up in NC and so this is the place to go as far as she's concerned. read more
