This is an old school deli... Driven by hundreds of times but never stopped so today we fixed that. This is a serious old school delicious but it was a great experience. The staff was friendly and accommodating. The prices are great, and the food is really good. I had the Smiths sub with 2 sides and a cookie. The sub was good, the sides were homemade ( potatoe salad and pasta salad) and the cookies was delicious. Wifie had a salad which she really enjoyed. Some folks won't like the interior decor because it is dated but the food and service make that a mute point. I'm a little embarrassed that I've lived in Clintonville so long and haven't been to Smith's Deli before now. I don't even have a good reason why. But we went last night and we will likely return. The 3 of us all had the Big Cheese. For vegetarians, it's a solid choice and I will definitely get it again. I liked the toastiness and assortment of cheeses. I would have preferred more of a shredded version of lettuce and more of a vinegar than Italian dressing, but that's more about what I was craving than what they were offering. I ordered a few box lunches for a meeting and they were great! We each got a croissant sandwich of our choice and there were lots of choices, plus house made potato salad & cole slaw & a very good house made cookie. (With other options for sides & cookies) My sandwich has lots of good roast beef, Swiss cheese, lettuce, tomato & they even had horseradish as a condiment option. And they have DEVILED EGGS, 2/$1.00!!! They have old school padded booths & Formica tables & chairs but it's cute in a retro way. The place is a little bit of a dive on the inside, but I am true believer that Dives server the best food, but it was clean. It also SMELLED AMAZING inside. Smelled like fresh bread! We sauntered in on a lovely Fall evening - we had the sense this place had been around for a while. There was a friendly atmosphere, and the place was bustling with locals. We said hello to the kind couple next to us who recommended the veggie lasagna. We walked up front to order, and decided on the lasagne and a BLT. The BLT was pretty standard, but the lasagna was truly special. The warmth and flavor of the cascade of tomato sauce was akin to a hundred hugs from our little Sonny bear! What a cUUUUuUuUUUuUuUuuuuute littel deli! I placed a phone order for pickup here on a whim. My fiance wasn't feeling well and wanted some food brought home after work. Not knowing the area I did a quick Yelp search and VOILA! Prices were super fair and the establishment wasn't too far away from my way home, so I went ahead and gave them a call. The outside isn't anything special looking, kinda drab but not unkept. I was SUPER impressed once I walked in. The place is bigger on the inside that it looks from the outside, looks well organized and clean! I also LOVE the wall murals! SOooOoOoOo cute! It looks like a traditional NY family style deli on the inside! SO cute! I ordered a ruben sandwich and two sides of macaroni salad. Fiance devoured the sandwich so I assume it was a hit. :P The macaroni salad was SO affordable I couldn't pass it up! Could have used a bit more mayo but not a biggie. Had an eye on this forever, but it's out of my way and I never made an effort to get here. Mistake. Today I had time and was nearby, and stopped in. Cool little deli, lots of carryout going on at noon on a weekday, not too many tables full. Standard sandwich menu, a few other items. I got a Super Smith (loaded Italian sub) and devilled eggs, because I didn't have any at Thanksgiving and hey, you don't see them on menus too often. Those came out first- pretty basic but good. Two halves, a nice little app. The sub was excellent. Great bread, great meat and veggies, etc. A bit small, but that's normal nowadays and the price was competitive, for a really good sandwich. These come loaded with many toppings. It has many of the Italian favorites. There's stuff like the ham and cheese and the pastrami. Also has a few without meat. The last time here I got lunch and it was fast and friendly service. I ordered a Vegetable Sub to go. It's about $6 for a footlong and side. This comes loaded with banana peppers, black olives, green peppers, mushrooms, onions, and tomatoes. Chips come as your choice. There's also other things here like salads. It has a tight parking lot. Pretty hard to get out. This is the only annoying thing about visiting. read more

We only ordered 3 and the place had 3 tables of people there. One person had ordered before me. When we got them, the sandwiches were small and disappointing. A professor told me about this deli a little over a year ago but I was able to try this place out for lunch with a few friends recently. It was a Wednesday around 2:30 and there were two others finishing up their lunch. As we sat, two other groups came in to eat as well. They've got a small parking lot which was nice, but it's hard to back out and turn left out onto the street since it's located off of a busy road. I had to get the Reuben. Yummy! It was toasted perfectly and you could tell they made the 1000 island sauce themselves. I added chips since they don't come with it as a side. The chips are a generous amount in the bag! It's a little more than your personal-sized snack bag, so I shared it with my friends. One of my friends got the tuna sandwich. She enjoyed the freshness of it. My two other friends ordered the same thing. They both got the Stromboli. It was huge and came with a big 'ol bowl of marinara. One of the selling points to this place is that a lot of stuff is made in house and you can tell. Wow! That's talent! They sell cookies as well but they had ran out of the chocolate chip. My friend had been looking for recommendations for places in Cbus to check out and after listing on Facebook, there were a lot of people who called out Smiths. I told her I was intrigued so we set up time to go in for a Saturday dinner. When we first walked in, we got the old school family style feel. You can tell these guys have been in business for a long time! There were many tables and a few booths off to the side. We grabbed a booth and went up to the counter where they gave us some menus and told us to re approach the counter when we were ready. We actually ended up just sitting and chatting for an hour and before I knew it I was pretty damn hungry and the place had filled up! I had seen quite a few people come in to get to-go pizza so their pizza must be good! I personally was torn between the pasta choices and traditional deli options. The pasta looked delicious but I ultimately opted for a BLT with chips. I was a little disappointed that they didn't have fries (I LOVE fries) but I should have figured they wouldn't since most traditional delis serve chips. Their chip assortment though was great! You could get them by the bag. I got the baked Lays but they even had the honey BBQ Fritos twists, various flavors of Doritos. It was difficult to choose! When we went to put our order in the man was very nice, asked us where we were from, etc. He told us that he was the owner and that they've been in business since the 1960s. That definitely speaks for itself! My BLT was great! Classic toasted bread with crispy bacon. Yum! I kept thinking about it all day the next day, I almost went back! I also got a cookie which although it looked like it'd be average, it was great! Definitely get one if you are there. Honestly as I'm typing this, I am considering going back again tonight for takeout. Smiths is definitely worth a try. I'd like to test the pizza and the pasta as well. If you've been in business for 40+ years, it's for a reason. Smith's isn't a great restaurant, but it's not terrible or even bad. Smith's has lasted so long because they're consistently good. I know of no 'go to' or 'must have' item for which they're known. It's not a place with a 'defeat our ___ challenge' and they aren't pushing the culinary envelope. It's a cozy environment with its history displayed on the walls. I ordered the Club Croissant which consisted of turkey, ham, mayo, Swiss & Colby. It also comes with lettuce and tomato, which I omitted. You order at the counter and food is brought to you after you pay. My sandwich arrived quickly, but with a pickle spear... ******side note***** I'm a picky eater and really sensitive to items on my dish that was never stated in the menu. I know most people are delighted by pickles, but I am not among them. If you hate, pickles, you aren't going to be too happy about a pickle spear weeping pickle juice on the bread of your sandwich. ********************* The sandwich was good. The croissant tasted like the big sandwich croissants from Kroger, which I like. Big ups for using Colby cheese, which in my opinion, is the most underrated of cheeses. On the downside, the drink comes in a styrofoam cup, which isn't great for the environment. I'd love to see the old school waxed paper cups that say PEPSI or COKE or COLD on the side. Parking is limited, which for those living in Clintonville, within walking distance, isn't an issue. I'd love to see a greater selection of Ohio made chips like Shearers, Grippo's, or Mike Sell's instead of the Frito-Lay that dominates the space. This place is a destination that you need to eat at, if for no other reason, than to say you've been there. This is great for a simple lunch or a light meal if you want to hit multiple eateries during a stay or a foodie weekend. This place will continue to stay in business as long as people continue to show up... and I hope people do. We need places like Smith's in all neighborhoods. read more

With its unassuming blue awning, Smith's can be somewhat easy to miss on a street teeming with trendy restaurant choices. It took me several years to finally make it in for a meal and once I did, I was disappointed that I had waited so long to stop in. Smith's has so much heart, soul, and character that it makes me nostalgic for a simpler time. The restaurant has been family-owned and operated since 1960 and even though the decor definitely dates the place, that's what adds to its charm. Service has been warm and friendly every time I've dined in. Just what you'd expect from the local neighborhood deli/restaurant. The menu here is quite extensive and there seems to be something for everyone on the menu (but I'm not sure about the vegetarian/vegan situation). The last time I was in, I dug into a turkey sandwich which, given my extensive experience with turkey sandwiches, was pretty good. However, I have limited experience with the menu outside of trying a couple of different sandwich options. The food at Smith's is good, but that's not why you should go. You should go to support a local, family-owned restaurant that has now been operating in the Clintonville community for almost 60 years. A trip to Smith's is almost like taking a trip in a time machine back to a much less complicated time, all in the best ways possible. read more

The crust at Smith's is crispy and just the perfect thickness, with lots of toppings. Not only is the food fantastic, but the service is great. Even though you place your initial order at the counter, the servers deliver your food to the table and continue to check on your drinks and take additional orders. I can't tell you how many times I've passed by Smith's thinking it was just an old diner that would never really interest me. Thanks to a discussion on Italian subs I was having, I found out that's it's actually more of an Italian/deli/sandwich shop hybrid. CMH Gourmand had written up something the other day comparing other Clintonville subs to India Oak, so out of the four they had provided, I let the girlfriend choose which one we'd go to. Gatto's was out of the question, since they didn't open until 4 pm, so we ended up checking out Smith's. I grabbed a couple buddies as well, and the five of us headed up there. Parking out front is pretty limited, but we were able to get a spot. I assume you'd be able to park on the side streets as well if necessary. The inside decor is very casual, and you end up ordering at the counter and grabbing a seat wherever you like. Four of us were on a mission to try the Italian subs, so there wasn't a whole lot of variety there. My friend tried the Italian Wedding soup as well and said it was pretty good. It took about 10 minutes or so to get our food, and the subs looked really good. It looked like they used Auddino's bread, which apparently everyone uses now, and it wasn't crumbling apart like many subs I've had lately. Overall, three of us really enjoyed the sub. My girlfriend had added mayo to hers and wasn't a fan after that, and I will say it tasted a bit odd, so don't mess with the recipe! We also had an order of garlic bread, which was very simple yet extremely tasty. I could have eaten that all day. I'd make another sub out of it. Thanks for the idea, Smith's! Before I left, I had to grab the fresh cookies that I'd been eyeing all meal. Get these! The chocolate caramel pecan cookie was SO delicious. Wow. I want some more of those right now. This would definitely be a place I'd return to, especially if I was in the area. Once again, I received a good lesson in not judging a restaurant by its appearance.
