Wow! What a surprising find tucked inside a brewery. We mainly wanted to grab a quick lunch while sampling some local beer. Instead we savored some of the best catfish tacos I've ever had and the husband refused to share any of his catfish and grits. Tucked away in West 6th brewery, you can get delicious fresh fish and seafood. Lexington has a shortage of places to get fresh seafood without a dining room experience and price tag. It's good to have an option that is more casual. Both my husband and I had Fish and Chips. The staff is wonderful and very helpful - probably the best part of this place and I'd rate them a 5/5! The food was okay. The wife and I both ordered the fried cod, the portions of the larger dinner is really to much for an average dinner, you could easily share part of it. The fish quality and sides was very fresh and had excellent taste. Smithtown has several choices of fried seafood available, their suppliers provide top quality items, as well as does the sister restaurants of Smithtown. An a big pus is, West Sixth micro brewery is of the business, so the brew choices are endless, An great. I had a Thai Basil brew with my meal, (a sour type) refreshing. It was a little confusing to get to since it is connected to a brewery and it didn't help that I'm from out of town. Found where to order and where to sit easily and waited for the food. I've had some really bad experiences with grits before but I decided to give it shot because of the reviews and man they did not let me down. I ordered the scallops and grits, the grits weren't dry and bland, they had so much flavor than I thought was possible. I'm torn between rating 3 stars or 4 stars, so I guess three and a half would be right on. I ordered the Oyster and Grits. The oysters were pan fried and served over grits with a serving of greens grouped to one side of the bowl. The oysters were tender and tasty. Very good. The grits were pretty good, but nothing exceptional. The greens were bitter and hard to eat without mixing them with the grits. I did not enjoy eating the greens by themselves. My wife ordered the Whitefish Platter. The platter included two pieces of fish, fries, Cole slaw and a couple hush puppies. The two pieces of fish were excellent and that's about all she liked. The fries were room temperature when served and limp. Neither of us could eat the fries. The hush puppies were small, dense and fairly tastless. I had previously sampled some food from Smithtown, but this was my first full meal. I had the Singapore Shrimp Wrap, and I was pleasantly surprised! It was quite flavorful and was served with fries that were tasty and crispy. The wrap was large and filling. It I was able to get all the ingredients and shrimp in one bite, it was even better! I was also impressed with the service. Our food was delivered to our seat in the bar at the brewery next door. They were very nice and asked if they could bring us anything else and I requested some hot sauce. The reason I say I was pleasantly surprised about my experience was that I previously had ordered a taco and it was about the smallest thing ever! Came here for lunch. After seeing the great reviews but almost got loss finding how to get inside since it is a Brewery as well. Once found it was a simple process to greatness. This is our second trip to Smithtown Seafood. The first trip was so good that when we made a trip to Knoxville the next time, we had to go out of our way to stop by again. My wife is a fish and chips kind of woman and I am a crab cake kind of guy. Last time we were there we had crab cakes and fish and chips. It seems as though this time they were out of crab cakes or they do not have them on the menu anymore. We both had their fish and chips and last time we ate at night. We didn't realize how dark the breading is, so my wife thought it was burned the second time around. When we showed the waitress l, she assured us it was not burned and said it was made with their Cocoa Bock Beer. I do not know what they do to make it so thick and juicy, but if you are a fish and chips lover, you have to make a special trip here. We have lived and visited all over the US and the fish here is leaps and bounds above any other fish and chips we have ever had. This could have been a 4 because there are a lot of good things. Love the concept, connected to the brewery. I didn't love my shrimp and grits because I like mine to have sausage, green peppers and a tomatoey sauce. The grits were thick and not remarkable and the shrimp to grits ratio was off. Grits won. The shrimp was ample but I am not a big fan of gulf shrimp, it's a bit wild tasting for me, but there was a good spice to the dish. Hubby had the crab cake and fries special. The crab cake was decent. Fries were good. Loved the homemade sauces. The harissa mayo....yaasss. Coleslaw was just right. So I would def visit again and try something else. read more

My friend and I were have a couple of beers at the West Sixth Brewing and was pretty hungry and wanted to get lunch. Smithtown Seafood is Lexington's newest farm-to-table restaurant, located in the Bread Box on West Sixth Street. So convenient that they are connected/next to the West Sixth Brewing. They make everything on the menu from scratch, with locally raised ingredients. It's that simple- you walk up and they take your order, give you a number and they bring you the food. I really liked their menu selection. At the time we came, they were also selling brunch. Make sure to look out for daily specials. They have fish sandwiches, burgers, hot dogs, fresh fish (fresh cod filet, U.S. Freshwater catfish filet, Oyster, Canaveral sprimp and Bay Scallops), Fish Baskets, tilapia specials, happy hour menu (from tacos to catfish nuggets, etc) kids menu, etc. I ended up getting the Fried Bay Scallops (1/4 lb for $7.95) . You can choose different sauces- I got the Ginger-Soy. As my side item hand cut french fries for $3.00. The staff was super friendly and very patient since I was having a hard time choosing my meal. Everything looked good! Went back to the bar and waited less than 15 minutes and the food was already out. WOW! Loved the Ginger-Soy with my Scallops. Great taste (and also fresh) and fries were hot with great flavor (did not need to put salt on my fries-seasoned). I would definately come back. We went here with local family who love the place. You order at a counter and then seat yourself in the brewery next door. Prices would be super fair if it was table service. A little high to order and have it brought out. About $60 for 4 adults. We got beers and waited in the brewery. West 6th amber was great. We could not find anywhere to sit. We hoped something would come available before our food came. Out comes or food on a tray...the waiter shrugs. We ask if we can keep the tray. We sit and wait with our food on a tray in the middle of the seating area for 10 mins. No one offers to help. We finally ask to squeeze at the end of a couple on a date's table. We all ate on top of each other. The table next to us, the girl gets up and goes to work behind the bar. Fish was excellent. I had the catfish and shrimp and was disappointed in the seared catfish and the shrimp. I love weisenburg grits and was super excited they had the local favorite. They lacked flavor and were an odd texture for a seafood dish. Fries were great. The others were super happy with their food. Next time I'll definitely go with the fish and chips! read more

As a recent transplant to Kentucky from California, one of the things I miss about the Golden State is the availability of fresh seafood. Smithtown Seafood may be small, may feel like an afterthought added onto West Sixth Brewing, and the menu may feel limited, but there is more here than meets the eye. Smithtown Seafood is a Ouita Michel restaurant, which means that the menu contains local ingredients and quality is paramount. You can get a basket of very tasty fish & chips (no mushy peas), or you can get a fresh salad (love the Singapore salad) and roasted fish (not limited to Tilapia). Chef Michel utilizes a fish monger in order to get fish that is freshly-caught and seasonal...I recently had Pompano from Florida that was quite delicious. There are also a variety of specials - the scallop tacos were fabulous. The first time I ate here, I thought it was a lot of work to figure out where to sit, what to get, how to order, what are the specials...it took a bit of time to read everything - in different locations - after navigating through the Brewery next door for a table. My biggest tip for dining at Smithtown Seafood is this: BE PREPARED. Sign up to receive their emails so you know all about the specials and the fresh fish available, as well as any upcoming special dinners. Also, have a look at the menu online before you go...don't end up with a basket of fried fish, french fries and hushpuppies unless that's what you want. Positives: I've had several items from here but the stand outs are the deep fried buffalo dog and most importantly- the fish & chips. The fish is so fresh and the batter is perfect, it's not too overpowering so you are still able to enjoy the natural clean fish flavor. Mayo based coleslaw is sooo creamy! The tarter sauce I believe is made in house and my husband swears by it. It's not too pickle-y. Service was friendly enough, gave a few suggestions even though it was right at 9pm and you could tell the staff was wore out and ready to head home. Negatives: Fries are a bit soggy, coleslaw could use a dash of salt. The Thai Nam sauce isn't as spicy as I would have liked and is very thin so it does really stick on much. The Vibe: Overall I haven't had enough to say everything is awesome or that it's the best fish place but I will say that they source locally which I love, from ice cream and cookies to fish and produce. My boyfriend and I had dinner here for the first time tonight. We got there around 5 and were grreeted by one of the friendly waitresses. We both had the cape codder with a side of fries. Neither one of us could get our mouths around this sandwich. The fish was lightly battered and amazing. I'm now spoiled by the tartar sauce they serve with it not to mention the pickles which had a kick at the end. And he thought they were just bread and butter pickles at first lol. A craving for the elusive soft shell crab led me to Smithtown. Although it was billed as a Po'boy, it wasn't served on a baguette, but a wonderful brioche bun. The crab was a fat, good-sized guy, perfectly fried, with legs sticking out on all sides of the bun. The sandwich was piled high with a fresh red tomato slice and a fried green tomato (nice touch), Romaine, thinly sliced red onion, pickles, and dressed with remoulade. Instead of fries, I asked to substitute slaw. The slaw was plebian for Ouita-World -- cabbage too heavily dressed with mayo and scant thinly sliced carrots and red onion. While the sandwich was delish, I'm not sure it was worth $14.00, unless you consider that Mother Nature only gives us these crabby delights for a short period of time, and they did have to travel a long way to land-locked Lexington. This is a nice unique spot since it is inside West Sixth brewery. The salads here are delicious and you can get some local healthy ingredients. I love adding fish to the salads as well. Usually the fish is really delicious and I recommend blackened. The portions are fairly small for the price so just keep that in consideration.
