This place was a lot different than I expected based on the previous reviews.... Of course I was there for the 4th of July Parade in Sausalito, and the judging booth is directly outside... and the fact that the Cal Alumni Marching Band marches right on in to Smitty's playing Cal songs.... Perhaps just perhaps this made me real happy.... And Smittys is really cool to Cal... they put ply board on the pool tables so the band could lay down their instruments and in the back they provided free beer to the Bears... I thought it was a nice touch... Or was it that I was with my three best guy pals in the world.... or maybe it was because everyone was happy to be an American today at Smittys..... The Bloody Mary I had was just okay.... but it was just okay enough for me to have two of em.... The bartender we had who happened to be one of the owners was funny as hell.... I really enjoyed myself.... You can tell its a nice mix of people who are probably regulars most of the time. A real cross section of Marin. I'd go back again.... I hope to at the very least go back next year for the 4th. I forgot how much fun it was to watch a small town parade and be with like minded people on a very special holiday. One minor suggestion is "please put hooks under the bar for women to hang their purses and/or men and women to hang their jackets". So, went to Smitty's for a small after work happy hour. They have a decent selection of beers at a good price and 4 good pool tables as well as a fancy digital jukebox. The scene and hometown drunks is what brings this place down BUT if you come with a nice sized group and take over your own area its great plus you can get pizza delivered half price! It's a pretty cool bar with pool tables and a dart board. I've been going there for about twenty years. My biggest issue is that they don't allow my Basset Hound puppy or any leashed dog in there even if it's dead (the bar, not the dog). One would think that after Covid, they would reconsider as my friends and I who got new buddies during the pandemic lost our local watering hole. read more

Went there on fourth of July. Since I live in SF and am used to a multi-cultural bar experience being the norm- my rating may be a little skewed. I've never in my life felt a more clickier place in the world. I won't spend another dime at the place. The poor bartender lady was overworked- her attitude seemed stressed and she was definitely burnt out. It was so obvious if you weren't a "local" .....you were going to get looks. Don't try to talk to randoms- they'll think you are threatening them. I'm just used to a more open feel like in the city- and it's only 10 min away. The locals may need to try to get out of their comfort zone and try a new city. There is life outside sausalito. read more

If you're looking for a cold beer, an affordable cocktail and a chill atmosphere, Smitty's is where to go. It's one of the only bars worth going to in Southern Marin. The bar tenders are always quick and make a stiff drink. Not to mention the jukebox and pool tables make for a fun night out (or afternoon, depending on your mood). Plus, on game days, this place is PACKED! Local restaurants will bring in yummy free food for the patrons to eat. Smitty's isn't the flashiest bar in town, but it serves it's purpose. read more

Dive bar....diiiiiiive bar. This place is the black sheep of Sausalito. I enjoy the shufflepuck and pool tables....the beers on tap are okay. The cougars and helpless dudes trying to pick up the younger patrons are always good for entertainment. The bartender will kick your ass... This is a hole-in-the wall dive bar. Go in for a beer and a game, but don't expect anything more. Female bartender behind the bar on Labor Day was beyond rude; however, isn't that sort of to be expected at a dive bar? The place is dirty. It stinks like smoke even years after indoor smoking was banned in California, the men's restroom is disqusting, they have framed pics of dead patrons on the wall (CR-EEPY) and about 5 TVs going at once (many with the same game....). I'm giving Smitty's an A-Ok because I get the sense the business knows what it is - A dive bar with no aspirations of being anything else. There is something to be said for that. read more

If this is what a "dive" bar looks like in Marin County I'm all over it. We stopped in on a Sunday night to find a decent crowd playing games, drinking, chatting, and having a great time. I was shocked to see that the pool tables were free... as was the shuffleboard in the back! The beer selection was decent and the prices weren't too crazy (think ~$6 drinks) - after all it's Sausalito. While cheaper drinks would be great, the fact that you're not spending money on the games more than makes up for it. NOTE: If you like darts, they have a really nice quality board by the front window. read more

For some reason, Smitty's is considered the local's bar in Sausalito (while No Name is for tourists), but nothing about the crowd here oozes "Sausalito." Quite the contrary, everybody's a bit rough around the edges, like the cold-shouldered bartender and the guy who's always playing pool in pajama pants...but that's what gives Smitty's it's charm. My favorite part about Smitty's is that it's not just for drinking...lots of activities - pool, awesome people-watching, shuffleboard (people get INTENSE about this, amateurs beware!), jukebox, darts, video games (I challenge all you yelpers to beat my exotic photo hunt high score), and karaoke some nights. One time I even just sat a table and played paper football with my friends. Very low key, anything goes, always a good time. read more

What's great about this place it's very close by to home and people know who you are. All the locals come here to drink or relax after hard week! AHHHHHH, SMITTY'S! The beer is cold, the music is loud, and......wait, there are cougars here? Hell, who cares....it's Smitty's. I have really been coming here as a regular for 3 years, right after I started working in Sausalito. I play shuffleboard in a league (yes you heard me correctly). You can find us playing on Friday Nights. Unfortunately, "The Hurl" (us) has finished in 2nd place 2 years straight thanks to the still undefeated duo, "Potted Meat" Damn you Potted Meat, DAMN YOU! With or without the Shuffleboard Championship trophy, Smitty's is a great place to unwind with some coworkers after a rough week in Sausalito Only negative....even when slow, it can take 10 minutes to get a drink. A dank little place to play pool and shuffleboard, haven to the locals and mystery to tourists. I'm glad to have stepped in this place, as its color and history are as vibrant as any you'll find in the bay. It is hard to hate a bar that is exactly what it wants to be. This is the place that everyone goes for a night cap on a Wednesday, meeting-up with friends all night on Saturday, and stop by after work on a Monday. It is meant for locals... and you will always find them at Smitty's. The service is what you expect of a sailor-dive: that don't take shit from anyone. The atmosphere is a mixture of 'whatever' and sea-loyalty. My first time in (as an official Sausalito resident) was met with handshakes and a couple of drinks-on-the-house. A local walked in with her 3 month old baby and proceeded to sit her on the bar saying with a wink, "It's her first time dancing up here" - to which a guy near-by chimed in, "It ain't goin to be the last time". The drinks are strong, which makes sense because everyone stumbles home. Pool is friendly and the music is usually loud (depending on the bartender)... you'll always meet someone new with a great story at Smitty's. read more

Anyone who doesn't like Smitty's or rate it highly in the category of Dive Bars isn't entirely clear on the concept. I found Smitty's in 2006, after moving from the chilly inner Richmond to the warmth of Sausalito. Sausalito rocks, but we do roll up our sidewalks at night. Smitty's is great for those nights when you don't want to drive over the bridge. Here you have 4 pool tables, a long shuffleboard game, a juke box, the requisite TV showing some form of sports and a bar stocked with the basics. I'd compare Smitty's to the Bitter End on Clement Street, except the pool tables are better, the crowd friendlier, and no one smokes inside. This place comes complete with local characters, but they add color and are friendly to boot. Seriously... some yelpers described them like vagrants, but that's a bit overblown. What you have is a mix of yuppies, houseboat dwellers and ancient mariners, and the nautical types just weren't great about applying sunscreen over the years. If you're looking to quaff something in a martini glass while discussing the latest gallery opening or the Dow Jones Index, head across the street to Sushi Ran. If you'd like a shot and a beer over a game of pool, Smitty's is for you. read more

Stopped in Sunday morning about 1045 AM to catch some football. Unfortunately the place was DEAD. Yes, we had just experienced a major rain storm but we were surprised none the less. I think there were a total of 5 of us in the place. I'm a fan because of the Bloody Mary's. Spicy and spot on. Did not get the bartenders name but he engaged with us as we wanted. Talked some football, some live music, etc. Two drinks were $14.00 + for Ketel One. Not sure how that ranks on the price scale?? But they were worth it. Nothing special, but a weel rounded bar/tavern. Many pool tables, shuffle board, pinball, beers on tap, a decent sized bar that's well stocked. I enjoyed myself here for a few hours. I would give zeros stars if possible, I am a local in Sausalito and wanted to check out the this popular dive bar I've known since as a kid and now I'm an adult and wanted to check it out and ran into a racist ass patron. This was during the pandemic when they slightly lifted restrictions so I was eager to get out and once you walk in as expected it's a dive bar vibe which is cool but I walk into the bathroom and this white guy immediately walks in behind me and says " make sure you wash your hands" in a condescending tone and slams down hand sanitizer in front of me when there was already soap and sanitizer to begin with, gives me a dirty look and storms off. I am Asian and I took this as a aggressive action that was unnecessary, so really wanting a drink I go to the bar but the bartender completely ignores me talks away with regulars and at one point even makes eye contact with me but just talks away anyway, after this I just walked off, this place sucks read more

We were told by a local that this place is nicknamed "Shitties", but that it is a fun place to go. We tried it on our second night in town and loved it! I guess it is what you could call a dive bar, but it's a lot better than some of the "dive bars" that I've been to. The bartender was super friendly, happy to give suggestions AND small samples of their MANY beers if you are having trouble deciding. It's one of the only bars open past like 9PM(at least on a weeknight) in Sausalito, which is a plus. It was only my 2 friends and I besides one other VERY drunk couple in there. They were fun to watch. Very entertaining. Anyways, I definitely say to give it a try, at least to have a couple of beers. read more

The bartender turned her nose when I tipped her less than 15% on a card thinking I was just leaving that and no additional cash. She said she "didn't even want that" and was very rude after making me wait for her to serve the whole other half of the bar when I was ordering over 6 drinks for my friends birthday. Looking for an unpretentious bar in Sausalito? This is it. The no-name bar also fits the bill, but because of its location gets run in with tourists some times. This place is a little further tucked back, and because it's right off Locust you get nice access if you're houseboating it in the nearby marina. Nice beer selection, ever changing handles. Service when I was here was friendly and amiable. There's certainly a few locals, and it's nice to see a bar that takes care of regular patrons. They sell cigarettes at the bar, but of course you gotta smoke outside. read more

Smitty's rates highly in the dive bar category... my rating is based on this comparison/categorization, NOT how Smitty's ranks in the bar universe. With that said, Smitty's does not disappoint as a dive bar with lots of character... and characters. You probably won't be able to get your $13 Absolut Pear Lemon Drop here, and that's a good thing - this is a beer and whisky joint. There are always a few ancient anchor-out houseboat hippies hanging around, and it's a fun spot, with pool and shuffleboard and plenty of people-watching opportunities. read more

Monday late afternoon review. Driving back from a day of fun in San Francisco, my better half suggests we Yelp bars in Sausalito that won't get mad if we eat outside food in their establishment - this seemed like the best bet. The road to Smitty's, we go past some million dollars houses that make us feel like "no way is this leading to a dive bar!" Decided just to trust Waze (hey, the app lets us know where cops are, it probably knows where bars are, too) and we finally get to the bar and it looked so dark from outside, we were certain it was closed. About 4 other people in there at 4pm but as soon as we entered, the bartender greeted us like we were old friends. Strong cheap drinks, empty pool table, and nice people. Will be back. read more

Great for watching sports--you can bring in your own food, or you can wait until the staff magically sets out sandwiches or quesadillas. I have watched many a Giants, 49ers, and Warriors game here and then wandered home. Prices are fine, drinks are good, but keep in my that it's a local joint that has been around for decades, and people can be a little surly at times. Fabulous from what I remember each time. If you are on the piss this is the place. I managed to drop my blackberry in the loo having a jimmy riddle. 10 out 10 for dive's. My now wife was taken on a niight out and made a huge mistake in having red wine, I told her I"Il never tell you what to do, but that is a really bad idea". I mean, it's Smitty's! What can you say about a dive bar that hasn't been said? It's on Caledonia, so that's a plus, not a tourist trap bar that charges 15 for a foamy cocktail. I was dying for a beer after a huge walk coming from downtown and found this absolute gem. Nancy (not sure if she's the owner) was the sweetest. She had a spare ferry ticket which she gave me and another customer. She let us taste the beer, gave us chocolate to snack on and wonderful conversations. This is a really laid back place, with great pool tables and darts. So many beers to choose from also! I highly recommend. I'll be going back to Sausalito just to go back to this place and to see Nancy! read more
