Great n'hood seafood restaurant and oyster bar. Very packed and busy but staff made sure we didn't wait more than five minutes for a table. Very clean, organized and well run kitchen and dining room. Wait staff were friendly, warm and attentive. They call everyone boo, darling or honey...naturally New Orleans. At first I thoughts prices were high until I saw the portion sizes. HUGE! Big enough for two people to share. I went with two friends and one had the BBQ Shrimp pasta special ...absolutely divine and then my other friend had a half fried shrimp & half fried oyster plate. I had spicy boiled crawfish with some of the fixings (all served a la cart). The fixings were garlic heads, smoked sausage link, corn on the cob and mushrooms. Boiled crawfish was very hot & spicy but not overly hot. My only complaint was that it was too salty. That needs to be toned down. My lips & tongue were on fire and my nose was running big time. Smitty's is consistent but consistently okay. The food is good but nothing to write home about, and the service is (on the whole) pretty solid but nothing that makes the experience amazing. It's the place I can't think of any "omg experience" good or bad. The crawfish (and most of their seafood) is generally weak, both in terms of size and flavor, compared to other places in the area and the city. But it's still good. The entree portions are average comparatively as well. But they are still good. It's hard to be terribly specific here because it's just that kind of place that you know won't ever be a bad choice but won't necessarily give you what you need either. read more

We went here on a Monday night because it crawfish season and we had a flight delay at the airport. They were selling crawfish for $4 a pound which we thought was a great deal. There were four of us for dinner, we saw this crawfish, shrimp and crab combo called the hamper for 4 people which had everything, right next to it said $48. We definitely thought it was a good deal because it had everything. When it came out it looked really good, but the crawfish were tiny and it wasn't fresh at all. It was all previously frozen. We started digging in, but 5 min in we were all looking for our crab and couldn't find any. So we flagged down our waitress and asked her where our crab was, she said oh we didn't have any, that's why we gave you 2 pounds more crawfish. We thought she was being super Shady. Why didn't she tell us when she found out they didn't have crab and when they brought out the food she didn't even bother to mention it to us either??? We wouldn't have gotten that combo if there wasn't any crab. Everything was extremely salty on top of that, but we were starving. Then when the bill came "the hamper" was actually $78! They apparently put it next to the other $48 dish with no price on it... to make u believe that it was $48! What a rip off and we didn't even get our crab! Crab is the most expensive part of the whole "Hamper"! There was probably at most 6-7 pounds of food and you charged us $78 when each pound of crawfish was $4! How does that make any sense. The crawfish and shrimp were old and gross. Don't come to this restaurant. They are shady. I would have complained if I had more time, but we were going to be late for our flight. High prices for this small, hole in the wall place. Is this all Kenner has to offer in seafood?! Please update your employees on what kind of fried fish they are serving!! I asked three different employees if the fried fish was catfish because the menu just said fried fish. I was told yes, so I ordered it. It definitely wasn't catfish and didn't have any taste. Our state mandated that you can't call it catfish if it's not. That is why they only put fried fish on their menu. It is imported fish just like the butterflied shrimp & crawfish tails, which they did list as "imported" on the menu. If you can't handle small spaces do not go here. As a member of señorita sir and a true booty at heart going to a restaurant like this seemed a little painful at first but I was convinced by other people who want to go... Haven't had eaten at many iron Chef restaurants and Shane rated restaurants in my life I was so overwhelmed by the quality and personality of this charming restaurant that at face value as I walked in and had a good wave of the scent of the food and looking at the smiles of the almost entirely full restaurant it cheered me up. And then I met Chloe Chloe is not just exemplary human being she probably gives the best and final service I've ever experienced in my life and that's after having eaten at fine restaurants all around the world. The best testimony I can share is this: I went back a second time and plan to stop back there again before I head back home to Hawaii. I'm here as a volunteer disaster first responder helping the survivors of hurricane Ida. We were treated like royalty as all the customers were no different than anyone else. The food is exemplary and their sauces as was explain to me has been passed down by generations and even the water, let me call the broth, that they boil their seafood in has been seasoned exquisitely with perfect balance. The presentation is fun and exciting, the food is unique and delicious, and I'm sorry to say I have not even one negative thing to say or one bit of advice for this restaurant. I guess, other than to keep it the same and keep staying true to you. If you get to this restaurant and unable to get service from Chloe don't fret, the other staff we saw were just as friendly. I know I'm gonna go back there before I leave next Thursday and I can't wait to have some more artichoke hearts with their insanely delicious mums sauce, and I would not even dream of leaving without getting at least another small portion of their insanely delicious bread pudding with the rum sauce. Ordered 2 pounds of shrimp with sausage and corn; asked if they can make it super super spicy because so far we haven't had any good spicy seafood in NOLA. Food came, we got a little frightened because the shrimp looks old. By old means it's seems as if it's been boiled for one day or two. It smells awfully fishy. So we bit the corn, super soft. We then moved to the sausage, it looks good but then as soon as we bite into it, it was still cold in the inside. So we asked the waitress about it and she said she'll bring new one that's hot. After the sausage, we finally got into the shrimp. I took one shrimp, the shell was soft. The color was not fresh at all, it was pale and some of it even have grey spots on it. As soon as I tried to peel it, the shell already sticked to the meat. I bit into it and it tastes really salty and fishy, really not fresh. My fiancé and I were looking for some New Orlean's Seafood that was off the beaten path and not a tourist attraction. On New Year's Eve we found Smitty's and it did not disappoint. Service was great - our waitress (Chanel, I think) was very friendly and attentive. We thought prices were great too. I got the New Orleans BBQ shrimp which was a big portion and came with a side salad (iceberg), a side of your choice, and about a half loaf of baguette. I got the New Orleans Fried Potatoes and they were to die for! The shrimp were heads & tails on, which makes peeling a pain, but that's part of the fun! They lose a star here though because the shrimp were overcooked which made them extremely difficult to peel because its like the shells were glued on. I still managed to eat them all though and I know I would have easily paid double the price for a smaller portion if ordered at a restaurant downtown. My fiancé got a bowl of gumbo and it was fantastic and a big bowl. He also got a pound of crawfish and they were tasty as well. There's no sides with the crawfish, but they were pretty cheap per pound and I had plenty of food to share, so no big deal there. If we're ever in New Orleans again, we'll definitely stop here. read more

In the New Orleans metropolitan area, Kenner isn't really a bastion of good food. I think Smitty's, though, is worthy of being included in some of the best po'boy places in the area, New Orleans proper included. Everything that I've ever gotten here is great. The fried oyster po'boy is among the best I've ever had. The soft shell crab and fried crawfish tails po'boys are excellent too. Mac and cheese is maybe not something you'd typically get at a place like this, but it's definitely just as good as your grandma used to make. Service can be spotty. This place was one of my fave local places, but sadly we just had a awful experience that now this place is on my "do not go list"... We ordered some food to-go, ordered our usual fave that was roast beef poboys along with some hush puppies. The poboy meat was so dry that all of us had to stop eating them. We also ordered some peeled boil shrimp, and got unpeeled shrimp instead. The shrimp was unbelievable salty and mushy, overcooked, that couldn't be eaten. So we decided to call in and express our disappointment and complained to the manager (Tammy), who's response was: "I can't do anything for you, and you have to call tomorrow to talk to the owner to express your complain"...that's not the answer you want to hear when you just spent almost $80 on a to-go order. The manager didn't even apologize, and she didn't even try to remediate the issue. I asked what can she do to fix the problem, and she said: "Nothing, but she could offer us extra gravy"...that's when we all said we were done coming at Smittys. I can't believe a manager wouldn't listen and do anything to make paying customers happy. Don't waste your money here, go to Harbor Seafood or KENNER Seafood, just to mention a few, where they not only have better food, but better customer service. read more

All I can say is: wow, wow, WOW. The food here is NO JOKE real authentic New Orleans food, and honestly both my boyfriend and I were blown away by how good it actually was. We went out with a few friends because I was determined to get a po'boy and some good crawfish boil. We waited out in literally blistering cold since it was so busy, but it was entirely worth it. The place is definitely a hole in the wall and does not look at all like somewhere you'd expect to get good food from, but we were absolutely impressed with it. We got a pound of crawfish, hush puppies, fried crawfish tails and Cajun potatoes and two shrimp po'boys (one full, one half seers with gumbo). The crawfish is seasoned perfectly here! Not too spicy but still full of flavor. The hush puppies were also quite good though some of them tastes a little doughy in the middle. The po'boys here are HUGE. One full sizes sandwich could easily be split into two separate meals. They were packed with flavorful fried shrimp and the bread was nice and crusty with little filler. The fried crawfish tails were definitely a favorite and I could've easily eaten one whole plate of Cajun potatoes by myself lol. Great, great portion sizes although I do think some of the meals are just a tad overpriced. But honestly?? The quality more than enough deserves it and you still get amazing portions of food!! The gumbo was also really good but a cup of it is highly overpriced. You really don't get enough to even be considered a "starter". Probably wouldn't order it again. Our waitress was very friendly and quick. Even though it was extremely busy our food did not take too long at all. [Follow-up: I just received a phone call and was told that the gift card was mailed yesterday. It won't arrive in time to be used for my relative's birthday dinner as intended, but at least we know the status and I can let the recipient know it's on the way. Changed my rating based on years of good food and service, and because this one issue was resolved.] I've been satisfied with Smitty's Seafood over the years, but right now I'm not very happy with them. I live out of state and ordered a gift card by phone several days ago for a family member's birthday. I offered to have a relative pick it up, but was told they'd be happy to mail it directly to the recipient (who is local), so I agreed. It was ordered well in advance and my credit card was charged, but we have yet to see the gift card. The problem is not that they forgot to mail it or misplaced the order or whatever... that stuff happens. What is NOT ok is that I have called twice in the past three days to inquire about it and have gotten the runaround both times (we're busy right now, I'll have the owner call you, I wasn't working when you placed the order, etc.). It is still not resolved. Unlike the customers they were busy helping when they didn't have time to talk, I've paid already and am still waiting for what I paid for. Not good business, Smitty's.
