Great meal! Another bookmark checked off! I stopped in for a quick solo lunch while in NOLA. It was pretty busy for a weekday lunch and it seemed the bartender was the only one serving the restaurant full of folks. I posted up at the bar thinking it would be my fastest option. He was damn efficient I have to say. He got me taken care of and in and out in no time. He even took time to answer some of my questions about the menu. It's your typical New Orleans place on the inside. Lots of random art, some awards for Ron, and a bunch of signed dollar bills pasted on the wall. I got the Yumbo Mumbo Gumbo, that's the Gumbo with fried shrimp added. Holy hell it was good! I realize that blasphemous, and kind of an oxymoron as well. I don't care, it was fucking fantastic!!! I found this restaurant on Yelp and decided to give it a try based on the positive reviews. Unfortunately, my first experience was disappointing, and I will not be returning. I ordered the shrimp creole with white rice, but my meal arrived with brown rice instead but without anyone informing me that the order had been changed. When I asked whether a partial discount or adjustment could be made since the meal was not prepared as ordered, I was told that the entire meal had to be taken back and replaced. No other accommodation was offered. The restaurant removed the dish from my bill and took the food, but I felt the situation could have been handled more professionally. A reasonable alternative would have been to offer a partial discount and allow me to keep the meal, especially since the issue resulted from the kitchen changing the order without notice. The atmosphere was decent, but service and customer accommodation matter just as much as the food. I also want to acknowledge that I am an African-American woman, and the fact that I was dining alone and did not order a large meal or multiple items may have influenced how my concern was handled. I cannot say that for certain, but the interaction left me feeling uncomfortable and undervalued. The owner made the final decision regarding the situation, which ultimately contributed to my disappointment. I was looking for some good Cajun food near my hotel, and this place was literally a four-minute walk away. The staff was friendly, the atmosphere had a great vibe, and the beer was cold and inexpensive. The food was outstanding. I even had a chance to chat with the owner/chef, who came out of the kitchen and made a point of greeting customers. That says a lot about a place. The lady friend and I came for dinner on a random weekend night as she always wants to try different gumbos and well it's in the name so why not. The location isn't the greatest in a strip mall off the Causeway service road, and the parking lot was pretty full, so parking was a little difficult. They have at least made the strip mall look better in the last few years. Upon walking in, I set off some bell on the door that kept on dinging over and over. Completely my fault and for whatever reason my clumsy ass kept bumping into it. It seemed like some sort of bad skit in a Mr. Bean movie. The waitress who would end up being our server even chimed in about me making a racket. She had the personality of Flo from Mel's Diner and Squidward from SpongeBob's love child. We got seated and each ordered a chicken and sausage gumbo and an entree. My entree was a BBQ Shrimp Quesadilla. Both the gumbo and entree came out at the same time. This always is a pet peeve of mine. Which one am I supposed to let go cold? Anyway, the gumbo was delicious. Perfect. The BBQ shrimp quesadilla was too oily and hard to eat but the flavor was good. While eating, the table next to us asked the waitress what the size of the big bowl of gumbo was and she picked up mine and showed them while I was eating it. I'm no prude or anything but maybe just point at mine. Anyway, the gumbo is great, the service was....unique and the atmosphere was blah. Small local place that doesn't disappoint. Really fun inside with dollar bills signed on the walls. Chef Ron happened to be there was the nicest person friendly and talked with everyone. The fried chicken was outstanding, crispy, fresh, juicy. Takes sometime but it's worth it, the sides are as good, Mac n cheese and greens. We met up with a friend of ours who lives in Baton Rouge, while we drove in from Gulfport MS. This place is an experience. The waitress acted like she was our crazy aunt and we were in her kitchen. Some might call it rude, I call it entertaining and family friendly. As we looked at the menu, one of us (not me) asked, "so what is your specialty?" Our waitress got almost in his face and responded, "why don't you read what is on top of the menu!?" It's a little tricky getting into the Gumbo Stop given its location along Causeway near the I-10 intersection. Keep that in mind, especially if you're coming from the north. I went with the half oyster po-boy and gumbo combo. The sandwich turned out pretty well, with a good amount of fried oysters that were clearly cooked fresh rather than sitting for a while. Pretty good bread too. The gumbo was a disappointment though. I guess I've spent too much time on the bayou down through the years, because anytime a bowl of gumbo shows up without a scoop of potato salad in it I'm disappointed. Worse still, this gumbo was flavorless, bland and completely lacking of spice. Were it not for the dark color, I would have not been able to tell the difference between this and the sort of store-bought gumbo that comes from a can. The moment I walked in, I was greeted by a staff member and a unique, welcoming atmosphere. The walls were covered in countless one-dollar bills, each with its own individual message, which made for a fun and interesting place to sit. The boudin balls were a great appetizer, they had a nice spicy kick, and I was pleased with the generous serving of five balls. The main was the Mumbo Gumbo, did not disappoint. It's a flavorful filé gumbo loaded with chicken, shrimp, crab meat, okra, and tomato. The 20-ounce serving was very filling and packed with flavor. The side of potato salad was a perfect accompaniment, adding a cool, creamy contrast that complemented the warm dish. My only regret is not trying the sweet tea. Having only one day this trip in New Orleans I scouted out the best reviewed gumbo restaurant on yelp. This place did not disappoint! Chef Ron's Gumbo Shop is a must-visit when you're in New Orleans! The food was absolutely delicious and full of that authentic New Orleans flavor. The gumbo was rich, filled with sausage, chicken, okra and shrimp and sooo flavorful, you could really taste the care that went into every dish. The atmosphere was welcoming and relaxed, dollar bills with good wishes all over the walls. Top forty music playing, the whole experience felt like a true taste of New Orleans. We found Ron's randomly driving around our friends neighborhood and we are so lucky we did! So good we went back twice! The atmosphere is decorated with dollar bills from customers and classic New Orleans style, but the food is what's most important. First trip I had Gumbo and my love had Jambalaya. Both delicious, full of meat and rice and flavor. We took some gumbo home to our friends it was so delicious. They were extra cautious for us as our friend as a shell fish allergy! So we really appreciated that. Second time around , my love stayed with the Jambalaya and I had the catfish and Mac and cheese. While the catfish was delicious, the Mac wasn't my favorite. 2nd visit: Dominic was busy so we got a different server. The new server with long Ponytail dude was not very professional. He took off before we finished ordering the food. He ignored us everytime he walked past our table. We tried to tell him that we have a flight to catch, but he does not seemed to care, not until after my husband got upset. I'm from the Big Easy and have eaten more than my share of gumbo, however this was my first time to visit this restaurant. Chef Ron has nine varieties of gumbo, ranging from the classic seafood to the ultimate gumbo which is file' gumbo with chicken, shrimp, crawfish, sausage and topped with fried catfish and oysters. Sounds like a winner, but I stuck with the basic chicken and sausage gumbo with okra and tomato. This had a rich, dark roux and good flavor. To me, the gumbo needed 3 additions to warrant a 5 star rating: a little more chicken stock because this was thick thick, a lot more chicken and sausage. Hmmm, don't know if there was even 2 ounces of protein in my bowl. And lastly some heat-more than Tabasco. Perhaps a touch of cayenne or Tony's. The restaurant itself is inviting and comfortable. Found this place on Yelp. Was driving in from Jackson Mississippi to catch a flight but wanted to treat my mom to something before we flew out. I come to New Orleans often but never really too many places outside of French quarters. This was worth every bit of the stop. Met chef Ron personally and he is a really kind and polite guy. He walked up and started talking to me as if he knew me. Made us feel at home. The food was delicious and the price was unbelievably inexpensive. The portions were huge. The service was fast and the decor was nice with money all over the walls with little messages. Went here in Metairie after a tennis tournament with my mom and sister. Sad to say but I think this is the first time I ever had a true po-boy. Great environment here, I love the dollar bills decorated along all the walls here. All the unnecessary decorations really give it the heart that you want in a place like this. I got a roast beef po-boy and must say it was very good, wished it was a little juicier, meet was a little dry. Service itself was fine, nothing special, although I will say one of the managers came around a couple times and asked us how our food and time was, I appreciated that. I had to stop by here while visiting NOLA for the first time. They didn't have any savory veggie options for me but there were a few different desserts to choose from. I got the staple bread pudding since this is what NOLA is known for. Since I had to catch a flight in a few hours, the plan was to just sample and not eat the entire thing. However, it was amazing and I ate most of it :) There were peach slices in there, a nice added twist. The caramel sauce was my favorite and paired so nicely with the bread. The gentleman that waited on me made me a refreshing mocktail at the bar and also did a little dance while bringing out my dessert. Cute lil place right off the highway with a great, humble staff.
