Just finished my second lunch this week here. Tuesday I enjoyed one of the best BBQ chicken plates that I've had in ages. Wednesday, I tried the Pork Rib Plate. Outstanding! One of my absolute favorite BBQ restaurants when I come through Jasper. The ribs are a must and fall right off the bone. I can eat a full rack of them. The homemade bread pudding is also a must for whoever comes through here. I could not recommend this place enough. read more

I popped in there today and I was very impressed. I got the chopped beef sandwich special with one side and a drink. The chopped beef sandwich was perfectly lean, the pinto beans were melt in the mouth goodness, and the homemade pickles a yummy treat. In addition to good, moist, smoked chicken and tasty sides, we appreciated the little extras that set this place apart. The BBQ sauce is tasty and the bottles are kept heated; the pickles (which were delicious) were chilled and crisp; the decor was charming and the music was fitting. After eating there I would not darken the doors ever. Beef greasy, pork dry, baked beans bland. If you want to impress people give them bigger veggies portions. Too long, didn't read: An inexpensive spot to beat BBQ cravings with a clean, cool dining area and friendly service. I want to preface this entire review by stating that this is not one of the Texas BBQ greats, and it doesn't claim to be. For instance, the price we paid for two "2 meat plates" with drinks was less than what a pound of brisket would cost as some higher quality BBQ places. It is not fair to review this restaurant compared to some others like those in Lockhart and Austin. With that in mind... The atmosphere was great, a nice cool retreat from the heat of an East Texas Summer. Dining room was well kept and very clean. The food is counter service, with meats and sides in warming trays. I got ribs and sausage, my dad got ribs and brisket. The ribs were good, slightly smokey, but it seemed like it was finished in an oven or perhaps had been in the warmer for too long. They were tender, pull off the bone and had good flavor. Sausage was good as well, but not outstanding. It had a very commercial make up, however, with a taste and consistency close to that of "country boy" brand links. The brisket was the worst part. For me, it was almost sad to call it brisket. It had been pre-sliced and was sitting in hot juices, turning grey. There wasn't much flavor to the meat itself. The sauce, thankfully brought it to life. It was a nice smokey concoction with a bit of sweetness and just the right amount of tanginess. For the price, it was good BBQ. Certainly better than some BBQ I have had other places. If I was measuring it against more premium and pricy BBQ places, it would get a much lower rating, but for what it is, it's great. read more

We ordered to go twice when we were camping in the area. I had the rib sandwich and it was phenomenal. Sauce is sweet and spicy. Potato salad was out of this world. Wife had the brisket sandwich, which was amazing and she had no complaints (amazing in itself). Second visit, we had loaded baked potatoes and my wife is picky about this particular item and she loved it and so did I. I highly recommend purchasing the strawberry preserves they sell....they won't last long, once you get them home. Consumed the whole quart jar in less than 2 weeks. I've reviewed this place more than once. When Smitty's first opened, the BBQ was good. You got a generous portion, too. They were a little pricey for this area, but still a good feed. Over the years, though, the prices have climbed (sliced beef sandwich from $4.75 to $5.95), the portions have shrunk (to about half what they were), and the food quality has taken a nosedive. The sliced beef sandwich has NO discernible flavor except for the store-bought sauce. And now they even charge you 20 cents for water with your sandwich. On a positive note, the side dishes are pretty decent ... if you don't mind paying $1.55 for a small scoop of potato salad. Hey, here's a thought: get your BBQ someplace else, and stop by Smitty's for the side dishes. read more

This was a charming place to eat lunch! We were passing through Jasper as part of a cross country bike ride. We felt inundated by the number of fast food places and were about to settle for one of those places until we passed this lovely little cottage. No really, it is cute little cabin building on the side of a larger parking lot. Entering inside the building you are greeted by such a warm and inviting atmosphere. First thing I noticed was the large menu. It was unlike many of the other BBQ joins we ate at further west, but the meat they served was just as good. We got their sliced brisket and smoked turkey. The meat of both were perfectly moist and tender. To be honest, not the best of the smoke meats we ate while passing through Texas, but it was delicious. The thing that the smoke house has over other BBQ joints is that their sides were wonderful. The dirty rice was awesome! Also they had the best pickles I have ever tasted. I know this sounds weird, but the house made pickles are one of the main reasons I gave this place four stars. They are slightly sweet, slightly dilly, slightly spicy and all around amazing. Luckily they were part of the accouterment bar because we about cleaned them out. What a great place to stop after a long day of biking. read more
