Al ( the plumber) and his apprentice Carson arrived right on time to connect my new grill to the dedicated gas line we had installed when we built this house. We opted not to get an outdoor kitchen ( which I do love) after having one catch fire in a brand new home we had built in Texas. FYI, the fire was all due to bad installation from the outdoor kitchen people , but it scarred me emotionally enough to only have a grill I can push into the back yard in case of emergency. After being told by first responders that my house would have exploded shortly, I knew we would be ever vigilant should we do this again. Al looked over the area and where the hook up valve was located and offered us sooooo many better options than where the builder had put it. He really knew his business and we were confident that for safety and aesthetics he was exactly the man for the job. And boy was he. He removed the old hook up valve which was poorly installed to start with( yes, this is a new home) and moved it to a much better location with all new hoses, connections and everything else needed for the job. Talk about a difference. He also had every tool for the job so there was no running back and forth to the store or back to the business. That was really nice. Carson, his apprentice was also incredibly helpful and found the wire needed in the grill to hook up to the starter. We were afraid that Lowe's wouldn't get there for the delivery in time and we would have to pay for another service call, but they made it just as they were finishing! A job WELL done!! 0/10 . Very disappointed in this company. They completely misdiagnosed my problem with my AC. We were told it was the fuse breaker switch and he did not have a part for it. I asked if everything else checked out. He told us yes. He had gone upstairs and outside to the unit with his diagnostic tools. We bought the part from Lowe's. That was not the problem . Turns out it was the compressor. In my opinion ,this person did not have the experience to know the problem or to diagnose the problem correctly. Also, I was not given a receipt just told it would be charged to my credit card, 574 dollars. Also, I had to give out my cc info over the phone to the guy before he would even drive to my house. I called the company and told them what happened and I was very disappointed in their company and would not be recommending them ever. I choose this company because it is a 3 rd generation family owned AC company and has excellent reviews and recommendations .Advertising 100 percent satisfaction guarantee with each service. That is not what I got. They may have been good at some point in history but not today.Do not use this company. read more

Messaged Smoak on their website for a service call estimate to check my broken HVAC. Someone called me quickly and we set up an appointment. They charge $94 for the service call, plus whatever the repair costs. They didn't indicate that $94 would go towards any repairs like a competitor did. The competitor charged $79 for service calls. Before Smoak came to check my HVAC, I got another company to come. Appeared my HVAC was toast. So instead I got Smoak to come for an estimate to replace the unit. Jay B. came and was very friendly and honest. He asked how much my other estimate was and said they would be a little higher; sounded like a little over $6K for a basic 14 seer unit. He said he'd still email me the estimate later that day just in case the other company didn't have any availability to install soon (told him I'd pay couple hundred more vs not having AC for couple weeks). Four days later, no estimate. That's my only knock against Smoak from a very limited experience, that and they seem to charge a little more for service calls and new installs. read more

Wow...We are enjoying our new Trane unit installed by Smoaks Comfort Control. We keep checking to see if it is working as it so quiet and efficient. The grinding of the 2 remaining condo units is quite a contrast. With hurricane season projected to be an active one.. we feel very confident that our new platform .. will withstand any storm . The installers were outstanding. They had to maneuver 31steps in an old home to the attic area.They went out of their way to make sure other condo owners HVAC units were not affected. Clean up was the best we have ever seen. As the owners of this condo unit .. we are 100% pleased. read more

Beware deceptive prices! Our heater went out just prior to a batch of cold weather coming through. I've had Smoak's out before and was happy with the service, so I called them again for this issue. On the phone I was told that there was a service fee of $119. Fine. The technician arrived and took a look at the unit. He gave me at least three very different reasons for why the heater wasn't working, ranging from a leak, to an electrical issue, to a bad compressor. Since he couldn't give me an exact answer to what the issue was, I declined to have him make any repairs or add any parts. After not fixing the heater or being able to diagnose the issue, he tried to charge me $381. He said it was because they charge an hourly rate, which had never been explained or quoted. I called the main line, and they said that they had a flat fee or $119 that doesn't change. When I asked why this employee was charging almost three times that, they changed and said that the $119 was a fee "just to come to the door." I've never heard of any company that charges a fee just to park in your driveway. After I said I wouldn't pay that, the technician eventually agree to just charge me $119, which I paid. The technician himself was condescending and short with me when I asked questions. Beware this company and their deceptive pricing and unprofessional employees. read more

Smoaks came to install an hvac and did not have the proper permits (nor did the owner who had them install it have proper condo association approval to move forward). We called the zoning commission when they arrived and the Charleston permit folks told Smoaks that needed a permit as installing a 7.5 platform in a flood zone for a new hvac and they only had a permit for the system replacement. Smoaks said they would get the permits and wait for approval-they did not. Now there is an illegal structure in my yard. Would not recommend if want things done legally. You can also see that the platform does not match the other platform nor have privacy fence which we have requested the condo owner to have Smoaks fix in the future. If you want things to look nice or legal-choose someone else. read more

Came right away to fix cast iron sewer pipe leak. Thought they might have to cut a hole in bathroom Sheetrock--would have made job more costly for me to repair in the end. I have been with Smoak's for many years for both my heating and air, as well as plumbing needs. Recently my HVAC system died and it was 13 years old. I chose to replace it. Jay came out and gave me a description of the options and answered all of my questions. James and Karl were the technicians who installed the new system. They arrived on time and worked very quickly throughout the day. When they were finished they explained everything, including how to use the new type of thermostat. Been using these folks for a decade for repairs & tune-ups, except when I had an HO warranty as they don't do HO warranty work. They only sell, maintain, & repair Trane A/C Heating units. They have a plumbing dept. as well. Prices are reasonable...maintainance agreements are available which gets you 15% off repairs and priority service. Staff &Technicians are professional, courteous, and dependable. Trane is number one according to Consumer Reports...take it from me ..my Trane unit continues to amaze people as it is 20 years old and I have only had 3 minor repairs. read more

Always easy to deal with. Remember that HVAC repairs can be costly. They charge fair prices and never "nickle and dime" you. Been using them for about four years for my home and my Mother's as well. My Fraternal Lodge does as well, never an issue. In fact, they installed two new systems at the Lodge in 2018. And their quote was by far the best for the Trane systems we wanted. No problems that was the result of failure due to materials or labor. Did have to repair when vent pipe cover damaged and debris fell in and caused internal unit damage. Fixed within four hours and did a courtesy check of the other unit and our gas stove. They always set up a time and then call when the technician is on the way. Tell you what is wrong when done and always ready to answer your questions before/at start/end of job. Never had a "baloney type" answer. Commercial or residential . . . they know what to do. We had an outside faucet that was leaking badly and after 4 attempts to contact a plumber, SMOAKS came to the rescue. Our technician, AL AHNER, arrived within 1/2 hour of my original phone call. We have been customers of Smoaks for a number of years and have purchased air conditioners and hot water heaters from them. We also have an air and heating agreement with them which is supposed to give us priority service in case of a problem. Last week our air went out. It took the technician 24 hours to get to our condo-certainly no priority service here. We were told that the part had to be ordered and that it could not be in Charleston until 5 days later. After the fact, we discovered that the part was in Charlotte. Unbelievable for a customer that has paid for a service contract that they could not find a way to expedite the part- my husband would have even driven to Charlotte to pick it up. Because of this poor customer service and lack of attention to detail, my husband had to stay in the heat with the temperature at 86 degrees! Smoak's really let us down so I would not recommend them to anyone. Buyer Beware! read more
