The business is supposed to open at 9AM. I get here today at 9:15 and one guy is already waiting. The business is still not open. The waiting guy finally leaves at about 9:30. Now I'm thinking maybe they changed their opening time to 10AM? About 5 minutes later, the employee shows up to open. It's obvious he knows he's late by his driving and haste in opening the place. A Ford truck quickly pulls up and takes the first spot. The employee's English isn't the best and he writes me up for the usual $50 something dollar smog bill. I tell him I've been here three times now and I want $40 out the door. He quickly obliges. The test was short and I was told my car failed which shocked me. Through his not so good English he tells me to drive my car longer since I had just replaced the battery and one of the systems (catalyst) was not ready. I googled the failure and saw what I needed to do. I also happen to have an OBD-II device which I hooked up to let me know when the system was ready. When it was I drove back and passed. I called six smog check shops in Roseville and this one was $13 cheaper than the next one $28 cheaper than another one. Since I called he matched his coupon price from the Pennysaver and it was $40 total out the door (inspection and DMV certificate fee). The owner was friendly and professional. There is a waiting area and pubic toilet. The shop is located across from HP, at Albertsons Drive, at the end of the giant reddish Midas Auto Repair building. It is not difficult to find, but its coordinates are N 38.79146 W121.31236. It took less than 20 minutes and he was finishing somebody else's car when I arrived. If you want a snack while you wait, Mitsuko's Cafe & Deli is 150 feet away (and according to Yelp is very good and has free WiFi, beer, and wine). Smog 1 is open 6 days a week (possibly Sunday by appointment). Normal hours are 9-6, but on Saturday he might close at 4, so call first after then. It is currently a little confusing in Yelp, because there are several smog check businesses listed at this address (one of them listed as "Yelpers report this location has closed"). It is not closed, it just changed owners and names, and I truly believe it is the least expensive smog check in Roseville. read more

Very nice guy who leases the last two bays for his smog shop from Midas. It can be confusing where to go. If you are looking directly at the smog check bays on the left and Midas bays on the right. There is a desk in between the two bays for the smog check, to the left of the desk is a walk way with a black gate to a waiting room. Nothing fancy but gets the job done and me out of the cold even with a portable heater, very thoughtful. $49.75 for a smog and a 10-15 minute wait. Not much of a fan of this place. The gentleman seemed grumpy and not very personable. The location and setting is what you come to expect from a smog station. Typical industrial type, nothing cozy or welcoming. No real waiting area. That isn't really a deal breaker because most are like that. However, going back to my early sentiments about employee attitude was the highlight--or more like downfall of my low review for this place. The test seemed to lasts longer than other places. Seemingly scrutinizing every part of my vehicle. The BAR I'm sure loves this guy as he will catch anything that can make you fail, so keep that in mind to those who have any issues or modification with your vehicle. 2 stars because the price here is cheaper than most, but I know in a posh and boujie area like Roseville, people will pay an extra $10 for more personable empoyees, proper waiting area that is air conditioned (crucial in an area that often gets hot), free wifi and other amenities. read more

I have taken several vehicles here and always had a good experience. The waiting room leaves a bit to be desired, but it's a smog shop, not a doctor's office. One reviewer mentioned a vehicle being "too old" to smog and left a poor review ( he actually seems to be a serial smog shop hater based off of his other reviews), however I have taken vehicles here from the early 90's (pre OBDII) up to current model years with no issues. They wouldn't smog my jeep because it had a new exhaust manifold and a skid plate under the catalytic converter. it's a stock 1997 4 cy jeep, the new manifold is 100% OEM replacement. they guy was rude and wouldn't tell me what was wrong with the replacement manifold, he acted like i was trying to do something illegal. i replaced the manifold in 2020 and got the jeep smoged for the registration in 2021, it's not a modified jeep, it's completely stock. He was an ass and just kept saying if you changed it i can't smog it. read more

Ultimately I found a competent and quick smog shop. Unfortunately, it was not Smog 1. I regret having paid this shop about $60 for absolutely nothing. The gentleman who operates the shop seems nice and polite, however I am completely exasperated by my experience here. I cannot recommend this shop. Last Friday I brought my vehicle in to be smogged so I could complete my registration (moving from out of state). I explained to the inspector that this was 50 miles after having an auto shop turn off a check engine light (gas cap) and he proceeded with the test. When this was completed, he informed me that I had failed because 50 miles was not enough for my truck's computer to clear the code (more about this later), and I would need to drive 100-130 miles first. I certainly would have appreciated knowing that ahead of paying for the test. In fact, an ethical business would have shared this ahead of time and not taken my money/tested until after I had driven those miles. I came back Monday to a closed bay and a sign saying that the shop was closed: mechanical problem. When Tuesday morning rolled around I called ahead to be sure he was open. I came back and waited, then he called me over to fill out an invoice for the certificate fee. Great! Finally finished! Except not quite - his machine broke while testing my truck and he would need to wait for someone to fix it again. He assured me he would call me if it was repaired by 4pm, so I guess I was expected to just sit around until he could perform the only service his business offers. I really did not want to spend any more time trying to get this simple test done and I was beginning to regret coming to this shop. If I came back would the machine break again? The DMV only provides a limited number of days to complete this. I bit the bullet and drove to another place, paid the fee again, and everything went fine. I learned from this other shop that because my truck has Controlled Area Networking, there should have been no reason for me to fail to begin with. Most reasonable price for a smog inspection in the Roseville area. Glad that Yelp had this place listed as it's a little hard to find if you don't look up the address; even when you get there the signage is minimal...a real "bare-bones" setup. When I walked in I didn't find anyone so I followed the signs in the garage area to a "waiting room" which turned out to be very strange...solitary confinement room with no windows and just a plugged-in space heater. But that was okay as the service/smog inspection only took 35 minutes mid-day on a Monday. The owner/service person was polite and his "business desk" is a table in the garage. Nothing but regret. Came here with my mom's car to smog, it was about 5pm and dark. I was quoted $40 ($31.75 + $8.25) to smog the car. About ten minutes in, I remembered there was a check engine light on. I was confident he (owner/employee: Mohammad) was someone with integrity, and would abort the smog job and not charge me. Nope, that was not the case. Mohammad saw a chance to make money by charging me for test that was guaranteed to fail. He ended up charging around $60, with a "free" retest. I took my mom's car all over town to find someone that could work on it for a reasonable price. Once the car fails smog it is nearly impossible to find a shop that is qualified to fix it for an reasonable price. Conclusion: His greed for $60 has now put us in a situation where we cannot fix the car, and needless to say cannot get it re-tested for "free". I came back just before the 30 days to ask for an extension on the "free" retest. He declined! Then I asked for a refund, again he declined. Finally, I asked for referral to a shop that can help us, he smirked and said it was my problem, not his. Thanks a lot Mohammad for your business! You are an incompetent tech (knowledgable smog tech would inform you before starting work, if there is a check engine light)!
