Nice local smog station that is Star Certified if your vehicle requires it. Service is no nonsense and straight to the point. Prices are competitive and they offer to match competitor prices as well as accept competitor coupons. It's test only station so if you don't pass, you have a free retest within 30 days like other stations. Plenty of parking at this station so if you drive something nice, you don't have to worry too much about who or what park next to your vehicle. I'm not giving them 4 stars because my car passed, but because it failed and the tech at least offered some insight as to what might be the cause. This place really does try to get your vehicle to pass and not try to stiff you to make a buck. Some days, the staff is more friendly than other days, hence the 4-stars. read more

Excellent, fast service. Amazed at negative reviews because they would not honor a competitor's coupon. This is a small family business, not a national corporate chain. How disrespectful to even present a competitors coupon and expect a discount. How far some cheapskates will lower themselves always amazes me. Want to use a coupon? Go to the business that issued it instead of the business that's closer to your home that didn't. It's called character, integrity and self respect. I've taken a few of my cars to be done here. they are quick and easy. just walk up to the window and sign the paperwork 15 min later your car is done. its close to the "down town" part of castro valley so you can easily walk to food or shops. read more

I don't know if I agree with the negative reviews I see against Smog World. I ended up coming here because my usual smog place (Chabot Smog) was packed this Saturday morning. Smog World was right around the corner on Castro Valley Blvd with no line so I decided to give them a try. They came out a little cheaper than Chabot Smog even with Chabot Smog's Yelp Check-In discount applied and just as quick, if not quicker than them. I have another car to smog this year so I think I may bring that one to Smog World too. read more

Been to Smog World once before, fast and honored a competitor coupon. This time, my experience was worse. Clerk didn't want to take competitor coupon. Took a different one finally. I had a funny feeling, but OK....we're now on to the smog check. Car failed smog with 439 HC (PPM) and 13.26 CO%. Was pretty bummed and thought I had to junk the car. Car has 161K miles on it. Took a few days to think about it, tried calling State of California Consumer Assistance Program about retiring vehicle or assistance toward car repair. Program is closed until July 1. Called a couple of Pick and Pull type places and got quotes for $300 and $500 to junk it. As a final check, before I had them come pick it up, I decided to try another place, Hayward Smog Test Only. I call him before I come and he says something seems wrong. With numbers that high, I should see black smoke coming out of the car. So, I decide to bring it down to him to smog it, realizing it probably will fail big time also, but now I'll know for sure before I junk it. I am literally shocked when the numbers come back 24 instead of 439 and .17 instead of 13.26. Wow....these numbers are way off. Back I go to Smog World to get a refund. He says I waited four days and that I must have gotten the car fixed and now I want a refund. I say I did not get it fixed. He says maybe my car has intermittent problems and on the day I brought it to him, it was not running well, but running well the day I brought it to the other guy. I say that I could understand that if the numbers were a little off, but the numbers are 78 times higher? No way. He says I had a free retest, why bring to another guy? I say, why bring back if the numbers are so out of whack. After 15 minutes of back and forth arguing, he actually gives me a refund, without admitting guilt he emphasizes. So, I'll give him 1 1/2 stars for giving me the refund when he didn't trust my word. But it sure wasn't pleasant. It cost me a lot of time and effort and I think it could have been avoided if the technician double checked to make sure everything was hooked up correctly when the numbers came out so far out of whack. I almost junked the car unnecessarily. read more

Sadly I only can review on them not being to work on time. Says they open at 8am, well I got there at 7:55 am and no one showed. I stayed until 8:10, left and came next door, dropped the car off, walked to get coffee and they still wasn't open. When I came out it was 8:17 and they were opening up. Smh.... Bad for business. It's a smog place. So why 5 stars? These guys are fast and helpful. Price is standard. Wait is minimal. I've used them a number of times over the years for our cars. The last time I had a problem due to a code reset that occurred a few weeks before the car was brought in for smog. It failed. To make a long story short- I had to bring the car back 3 times until it passed. I went a week past their 30-day retest policy, but they were very accommodating and did not charge me again. read more

This place sucks. I've been going there for years but somewhere along the line, either man agent or staff changed. The new people working there are very smug. Took my car there and it was a nightmare, they failed it on visual although it passed emissions (never had problems in the past) Then had to deal with all the following BS with the state but every time I came to Smog World the attitude of the staff and the way they treat the costumers was very pathetic. Stay away from this place unless you appreciate unfriendly, not accommodating customer service. I've been here in the past and had a similar experience but thought I'd give it another try. I really hoped my first visit was just someone having a bad day. I had my fingers crossed about this place it being in MY community but boy was I wrong. I stood at the front counter as the receptionist Facebooked. After waiting about 40 seconds I said, "good morning". He did not respond. He just got up and walked to the counter. I gave him my paperwork and asked for a smog check. Once again no reply.I then asked if they had any specials today. He chuckled and said no. I told him that I will go somewhere else. They are a family run struggling company, inexpensive, accept others coupons, super nice and often have coupons in the Castro Valley Forum weekly paper. Take a coupon if you don't want to pay full price. They will always honor it and they are always nice. I usually go to a different one with each of my cars because I never found one that was just straight-forward. Finally one that will get the job done and be nice about it.
