Smoke Tree Ranch is such a cool hidden property located in the desert I can admit I was fully unaware of its existence. I stumbled upon it due to purchasing tickets for a recent show that took place in their Disney hall room on the property. Reading up on the smoke tree ranch it's a property that has housed some legendary stars and celebrities over the years. The property consists of homes and a hotel with cottages that span the desert landscape. It appears this property is used to host private events and weddings overall. I didn't stay at the hotel/cottages but it looked very cute and off the grid in the sense that you just come to have some relaxation, hike, and to utilize their different sports facilities on site. The Disney hall was a small little venue but perfect for the event I came for. I liked that they had staff service with some small bites presented and they opened up a bar area in the lounge. Very cute area for hosting small gathering or talks. I really enjoyed this property and will keep my eyes open to see what other events may be held here in the future as the vibes were good and it was a very private, intimate setting. read more

Smoke Tree was very underwhelming. We went for a wedding and found the rooms need updating, improvement in the food area, and we found the location to be THE least accommodating I've experienced for guests for a larger event. The air vent in our room clicked every 20-30 minutes waking us up. Even though we were onsite for a wedding, we went and grabbed takeout for several meals because the location was not willing to accommodate dietary needs or meals for kids. Every request was made with a "there is a Ralph's down the street." !! The wedding was held outside in the heat, and it seems wild to me that coordinators wouldn't have recommended a different location on the property, moved tables to the shade, procured umbrellas, etc. I have to imagine their staff was warm as well. Overall, this is not somewhere I would return, and not what I would expect at this price point. read more

Ill start off by saying i haven't been on a horse in a loooong time and i was SUPER nervous about going on a 2hour trip. When we arrived the staff was amazing and super helpful and encouraging. we were given our horses and our guide Case began the trip. he could TOTALLY tell i was soo nervous but he just kept talking to us the entire way and after 5-10 min i almost forgot i was even nervous to begin with. this a a very professional friendly and CLEAN choice if you decide to (and you SHOULD) go horseback riding. Couple of recommendations wear sunscreen, choose the protective helmet, wear jeans with out back pocket flaps, and #1...LISTEN to your guide even of you are an "experienced" ride... Ok I fell In LOVE with this venue. It was hard for me to gauge since they really dont have a lot of up dated photos (Hint hint) on how my wedding would be here. the place is AMAZING. Beautiful desert dreams come true. We made an appointment today to tour the property for potential trips for 2 groups we are involved in leadership roles with, 50 couples of CEO coaches who meet around the country twice a year & my own group I lead of 12 CEO couples for our annual retreat. They had our names apparently at the front gate to let us onto the property. We drove around & were rather concerned at how dated the property looks, including wall air conditioners- in the desert! The front desk was beyond confused by our visit & had us wait 20 minutes for Lisa, the GM, to allegedly come tour us. She curtly questioned our appointment (despite the gate having both our names) & told us she couldn't show us a sample room (no reason given), despite an apparent occupancy rate of close to zero (based on few visible guest cars & few visible staff). Then she said no one else could show us a room (again no reason given), despite the 2 staffers standing at the front desk doing nothing. People (& properties) are constantly revealing themselves- believe them! We were also concerned at how few TA & Yelp reviews there are for a property that's been here awhile. So this is our fifth trip here. My first review of two stars was, in hindsight, charitable. We have since stayed in a couple of the older cottages. Well worn. And worn out. And in need of serious maintenance and updating. From broken down chairs to a toilet that runs and refills at all hours, to peeling paint and strange odors, to worn out carpet. I recently got married at Smoke Tree Ranch and my wedding couldn't have been more beautiful and simply perfect. STR is an amazing property, we had the ceremony on the grass, the cocktails at the pool, then the reception on the "back yard" of the ranch house. If you can "fill up" the rooms with your wedding party, the pool area is practically your own! A great place for all of your guests to mingle and get to know each other pre-wedding. The staff was so accomodating and nice. It's truly a lovely, tranquil place. My only complaint is the website, it's very out dated and does not do the ranch justice... Wow! I Sometimes forget you can still stay here, as a resort experience, or even host a fancy wedding! I was fortunate to spend many Winters and holidays at STR when my family were "colonists" and maintained a, modest by todays over-the-top standards, home here. I'm fortunate to still have "rock holding" friends here. Vedy, vedy low-key, and old, mid-West, corporate, coupon-clipping, money. A mature, yet fun, hard-drinking, bridge playing, Republican crowd. That old, silver-haired guy, on the corner, bought his '56 Thunderbird, NEW! The only film folk then, were the Walt Disneys'. Rumor has it he borrowed on his home here, to open Disneyland? The famous statue there, of him, with Mickey has him wearing a necktie with the STR brand-logo. A still-wonderful, old-time, vintage dude-ranch vibe, not the fanciest, or the flashiest but still the BEST! read more

This is one of those hidden gems in Palm Springs. The resort has every imaginable activity you can think of. From a magnificent pool and jacuzzi area, to tennis courts, beach volleyball, basket ball court, lawn bowling, fitness center, kids playgound, hiking trails, biking, etc., you can be busy every minute of the day. Or you can just decide to relax on a lazy lounge chair and enjoy the scenery. The rooms are spacious and luxurious. The staff are very friendly and helpful. The bonfires at night are dreamy and the food is very tasty for a buffet. We recently brought the whole family together for my dad's 80th birthday and we couldn't be happier. I would highly recommend the place. If you want to plan anything there, ask for Elizabeth. She's super friendly and very helpful. read more

This is a unique place to stay in the desert. Very private and more intimate than larger resorts. If you want all the modern facilities this is not the place to go. But if you want a tranquil location it is very special. The food quality and pricing is extraordinary. Dog friendly. The walls between the casita's need much more sound-proofing as you can really hear people in the side-by-side unit. read more

Be prepared to be treated like a second-class citizen if somehow you are not a regular. Arbitrary seating rules for the buffet mean multiple uncomfortable, inhospitable and unwelcome behaviors as well as mixed messaging by the host/managers. Hospitality 101 needs to be refreshed for the entire buffet and host team, including servers. Front desk is fine. Certain cottages feature a new tub but no running hot water. Try again. Will not be returning after spending an entire weekend there. read more

My boyfriend's grandma has a house here and we went just for one day this past weekend. I wish we were there longer!! We had such a great time in less than 24 hours. The weather was amazing and I really needed some sun. We began with lawn bowling by the pool and restaurant. A fun and casual game. It was nice that one of the men who worked there came over and taught us how to play and gave us some tips. After that we took the golf cart back to the house and went swimming at the private pool. We then took the convertible into the town and visited the huge Marilyn Monroe statue and walked around downtown. That night we had dinner at the Ranch House on the property and it was DELICIOUS lobster tail with tons of dessert. That night we laid by the pool and looked at the stars and it was a great mini-getaway. What a cool place!! read more

staying at smoke tree ranch was a simply lovely experience. i was here for a conference/retreat, so i didn't have to foot the bill, which made it even lovelier. i stayed in one of their studio cabins, which featured a cal. king bed layered with downy goodness and a plethora of pillows, a bathroom with a terrific full-figured shower head and a walk in shower to boot. plus, had i been up for some candle and wine time, the bath tub was absolutely inviting as well. room also came with a stocked fireplace, and the front porch area had a recliner and chairs for sitting and smoking (if you so desire, just saying, there was an ashtray waiting in readiness...). each morning i walked around the perimeter of the property (2.5) miles, taking in the desert sunrise. super beautiful. i didn't avail myself of the pool, jacuzzi, golfing, stables, lawn activities, but if that's what you like, it's all there for you. read more

This is a special, and unique location. STR is a resort for families, and provides a setting that steps back in time. It was established near the turn of the century, and is more old Los Angeles & Pasadena than the movie star scene. The place (about 60 acres) has been defending itself from the growth of Palm Springs. It is located adjacent to the mountains, and allows access to the mountains for hiking, horseback riding (an adjoining stable) or mountain bike riding. I climb mountains and walk to the Palmcanyons. My favorite (albeit eclectic) is the lawn bowling. My kids have taken to it, as it provides a social context with a bit of skill required -- this is the game where the bowls are weighted. You will not find a golf course on the grounds, and I support their choice as they beauty of the desert is rare compared to the proliferation of golf courses. They have tennis and a pool -- the tennis tradition is quite established. If you visit it is a bit of a nostalgic trip back in time. The food is well prepared, served in an American plan, and gushes over. On weekends they have breakfast rides to the local canyons. Not for all, but for those who would pick it, a great choice. read more

A friend of mine was visiting from New York and as part of the Palm Springs experience I planned was a horseback ride at Smoke Tree Stables. As we walked past western artifacts beneath shade trees we were greeted by the "ranch dog" who playfully walked with us to the stable where the morning chores were the background music to that special aroma of fresh hay,saddle leather and horses! We were greeted by friendly staff and after some paperwork we headed to our horses who were picked to match our experience. After some instruction and adjustments to our tack equipment we were given saddle bags to hold water,cell phones etc. A great Idea! Salvatore,our trail guide, was very informative pointing out local desert plants and other interesting facts. The ride started towards the Indian Canyons with a gentle rise in elevation with mountains as our back drop. I never experienced such clarity. It seemed as if we were in a painting. Once at the Indian Canyons we crossed a stream under the shaded canopy of Palm Trees. The silence was only broken by the horses sloushing through the water. We took the two hour ride which I didn't want to end! The experience was one that I will cherish forever. Happy Trails......... read more

Really great bartender-we were there for a wedding. The vibe was relaxed fancy for the event which was perfect. The venue as a whole is Palm Springs desert dude ranch. The hotel room was our own little cottage (which was pretty cool). Loved the big bed, wood burning fireplace and roomy bathtubs. The cottages are well-appointed for a relaxing time and I found the bed to be fairly comfortable despite my spinal challenges. The food was great! As a getaway wedding, the Smoke Tree Ranch was perfect. The venue was fantastic for accommodating out of town guests and allowed everyone to stay close by during the wedding weekend. On Nov. 17th (wedding day), the weather was slightly overcast and comfortable and remained so into the evening hours as the guests dined on tables set up outdoors on the patio and lawn areas. In addition, because of the sight overcast, everyone was able to take photos with their eyes wide open without needing to squint. Smoke Tree provided all the desserts for Welcome Party (night before the wedding) and the dinners for the reception. The food was excellent, fairly priced, and well presented. The staff, many of them being overseas exchange students in the hotel/hospitality field, were friendly and attentive. We couldn't be more pleased with the service. We had an open bar for the wedding reception. However, we were able to bring our own wine for the reception by paying a corkage fee. Since we were able to select our own wine and return any unopened bottles to Trader Joes, we saved by adopting this approach. We were able to have many of our guest stay with us on the Ranch. The room prices were a little pricey. However, the convenience of being on sight and using the facilities, i.e. pool, tennis courts, lawn bowling, and restaurant for breakfast, all together, made it worthwhile. The accommodations were great except that the original Classic Cottages could definitely use some modernizing. Our guest who brought their dogs especially loved the open spaces on the Ranch and that they didn't have to keep their dogs in a kennel while they were away at the wedding. read more

Very quiet, understanded, and definately took you to a quieter time and place; however, the service and staff was absolutely FIRST CLASS. My son's wedding was here and it was FABULOUS! It was a destination wedding with the cabins rented out to wedding guests and we all stayed the weekend. The ranch prepared a BBQ welcome dinner on Friday night, followed by Reception Saturday after the wedding and a Brunch on Sunday morning. Everything was done very well and the food (all of it) was great. The chef was very attentive and open to anything we needed. Highly recommend this venue and the family is voting for a future reunion in a couple of years. Very relaxing and fun! read more

This place is very over priced and extremely over rated. Let me some-up my experience with one word they have a rat problem related to near-by fruit trees. One my one and only visit - early in the morning I caught a grounds keeper pulling a drowned rat out of the pool! I speak spanish and was able to communicate with the man. He told me this is not the first time it has happened and the management has them check the pool very early on a daily basis for this sort of thing. I packed and left immediately. This place is the true desert ranch experience-- rustic, genteel, with perfectly maintained grounds. Great food in the ranch house for an excellent price. But I would not recommend the basic unit (Class Cottage for $330) because it is really small and almost claustrophobic and the furnishing are a little rundown (our room even smelled a bit musty). The Deluxe Cottage or better yet the Deluxe One Bedroom will make it the true resort experience. All are very expensive, but maybe this is because they really seem to cater to large groups and not to be interested in individual customers. We think this is the only place to stay in Palm Springs to get the true desert experience of solitude, so we were willing to pay the price for the better cottage. Great pool, lots of conversation areas with fireplaces at the ranch house, and worth renting the bikes for the day because there is lots of area to ride around the ranch.
